NiFeP nanosheets for efficient and durable hydrazine-assisted electrolytic hydrogen production

Jinxing Hou,Kaifeng Mei,Tongtong Jiang,Xinxin Yu,Mingzai Wu

Hydrazine-assisted electrochemical water splitting is an important avenue toward low cost and sustainable hydrogen production, which can significantly reduce the voltage of electrochemical water splitting. Herein, we took a simple approach to fabricate NiFeP nanosheet arrays on nickel foam (NiFeP/NF), which exhibit superior electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR). Our investigations revealed that the excellent electrocatalytic activity of NiFeP/NF mainly arises from the bimetallic synergistic effect, abundant electrocatalytically active sites facilitated by the porous nanosheet morphology, high intrinsic conductivity of NiFeP/NF and strong NiFeP–NF adhesion. We assembled a hydrazine-boosted electrochemical water splitting cell using NiFeP/NF as a bifunctional catalyst for both electrodes, and the overall hydrazine splitting (OHzS) exhibits a considerably low overpotential (100 mV at 10 mA cm−2), and is stable for 40 h continuous electrolysis in a 1 M KOH + 0.5 M N2H4 electrolyte. When it is applied to hydrogen production by seawater electrolysis, its catalytic activity shows strong tolerance. This work provides a promising approach for low cost, high-efficiency and stable hydrogen production based on hydrazine-assisted electrolytic seawater splitting for future applications.

Directly preparing well-dispersed ultra-hydrophilic NiFeP nanoparticle/Mxene complexes from spent electroless Ni plating solution as efficient hydrogen evolution catalysts

Yue Hou,Zhangfu Yuan,Xiangtao Yu,Bowen Ma,Linfei Zhao,Dong Kong

A novel approach is proposed to prepare well-dispersed ultra-hydrophilic NiFeP nanoparticle/Mxene complex by recovering Ni, P, and organic acid from spent electroless Ni-plating solution. The mechanism of NiP-based nanoparticle formation and size regulation during the hydrothermal process is analyzed. Ni 2+ chelated with sodium citrate in the electroless Ni plating effluent anchors on the Ti 3 C 2 surface with -OH functional groups by chemical reaction and charge adsorption owing to Mxene surface negativity. The as-prepared ultrafine NiFeP nanodots are connected with alkali-induced Ti 3 C 2 Mxene nanosheets , which possess ultra-hydrophilic performance and rapid H 2 bubble desorption behavior. The introduction of alkali-induced Ti 3 C 2 MXene as a substrate controls particle agglomeration in the hydrothermal crystallization process and achieves perfect dispersed distribution of NiFeP nanoparticles to further increase the specific surface area of catalyst. Consequently, the NiFeP/Ti 3 C 2 nanohybrid catalyst exhibits outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst performance as a result, with an overpotential of 122 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , quick reaction kinetics of 68 mV dec −1 , and strong long-term stability over 24 h in 1 M KOH. This research develops a strategy for directly preparing high-value catalyst materialization from spent electroless Ni-plating solution.

Ruimei Yue,Zunli Mo,Chao Shuai,Simin He,Wentong Liu,Guigui Liu,Yongxin Du,Qibing Dong,Junxia Ding,Xiaolun Zhu,Nijuan Liu,Ruibin Guo

The design and preparation of high-efficiency and durable non-precious metal electrocatalysts are critical to the realization of large-scale water splitting. In this work, nano cubic clusters of Ni and Fe bimetallic phosphides (NiFeP@NC/NF) grown on NF substrates were synthesized through a simple secondary hydrothermal reaction and low-temperature phosphating. By exploring the phosphating temperature, the optimized NiFeP@NC/NF material shows excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) properties in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. It has a small initial overpotential of 286 and 242 mV and low Tafel slope of 69 and 126 mV dec −1 at current density of 20 mA cm −2 , which is attributed to the synergistic effect of NC@ NiFeP nanocubic clusters and NF framework, NiFeP@NC nanocubic clusters not only provide more active specific surface area but also the interlaced structure is more stable. The introduction of miscellaneous elements can accelerate the mass transfer in the reaction. The results show that NiFeP@NC/NF is an excellent dual-function electrocatalyst for water splitting and a promising candidate for electrocatalytic water splitting.

0D-2D Interaction: Pt quantum dots trigger the strain effect of S-NiFeP nanosheet to achieve ampere-level current density overall water splitting performance of Pt@S-NiFeP/NF electrode

Xiao Chen,Yating Hou,Jinghan Xu,Ningyuan Song,Xinru Wei,Yanru Liu,Kang Liu,Yunmei Du,Lei Wang

Nowadays, the electrocatalytic regulation mechanism of quantum dots (QDs)-supported materials is limited to strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) and electron-metal-support interaction (EMSI). However, the lattice strain of the carrier induced by QDs is neglected, which is not conducive to the directional design of the QDs-supported electrode and the establishment of its structure-performance correlation. Given these, the size and distribution of Pt QDs controlled by electrodeposition effectively regulate the strain degree on S-NiFeP nanosheets. DFT results reveal that Pt@S-NiFeP/NF complies with a Fe-Pt dual active sites mechanism for alkaline HER, and a Fe active site mechanism for OER. Interestingly, the compressive strain in the S-NiFeP substrate effectively promotes the d‐band center shift and the energy barrier reduction, thereby optimizing the alkaline HER and OER kinetics. As expected, Pt@S-NiFeP/NF with appropriate strain owns alkaline HER and OER performance at 1 A cm −2 that exceeds the commercial Pt/C and RuO 2 . Overall, this work has guided the structural design of the 'noble metal QDs@carrier' model and laid a foundation for its application at ampere-level current densities.

Design of hierarchical core–shell NiFeP@NMO heterostructures facilitating interfacial electron transfer and oxygen vacancy formation for efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen production

Ke Liu,Yan Shen,Haoyuan Guan,Xue Yang,Chengxiang Zhang,Jiangqin Wang,Meisong Xu,Sibudjing Kawi,Wanliang Yang,Yan An

Designing low-cost and high-performance electrocatalysts to replace noble metals for the electrocatalytic hydrogen production endures a noteworthy bottleneck in an environmentally benign hydrogen generation approach. Herein, we present a hierarchical NiFeP@NiMoO 4 core–shell heterostructure (NiFeP@NMO/NF) synthesized via hydrothermal growth and electrodeposition on nickel foam, followed by phosphidation. The core–shell heterostructure optimizes active site exposure, while the heterointerface between NiFeP and NiMoO 4 facilitates rapid charge transfer and modulates electronic configurations via interfacial synergies and oxygen vacancies. The as-synthesized NiFeP@NMO/NF showed an overpotential of 41 mV for 10 mA cm −2 to actuate HER in alkaline electrolytes along with superior stability. Comprehensive characterization reveals that the core–shell structure enhances structural stability, while oxygen vacancies and interfacial electronic coupling optimize hydrogen adsorption kinetics. Density functional theory calculations reveal that NiFeP@NMO/NF superior activity from enhanced interfacial electron concentration, accelerated electron transfer, and reduced free-energy barriers for the hydrogen evolution reaction. This work underscores the pivotal role of interface engineering in designing efficient non-precious electrocatalysts, offering a viable pathway for scalable green hydrogen generation.

Roles of the self-reconstruction layer in the catalytic stability of a NiFeP catalyst during the oxygen evolution reaction

Fuzhen Zhao,Xinyu Mao,Xin Zheng,Huicong Liu,Liqun Zhu,Weiping Li,Ze Wang,Haining Chen

The roles of the self-reconstruction NiFe–OOH–P layer in the catalytic stability of the NiFeP catalyst during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), especially in terms of the atomic dissolution and the adsorption behavior of formed bubbles, are seldom studied. Herein, through a systematic study on crystalline (Ni1−xFex)3P, a NiFeP catalyst, it was revealed that although Fe & P dissolve rapidly from the self-reconstruction layer, the self-reconstruction layer could suppress Fe & P dissolution from (Ni1−xFex)3P, tending to form a stable (Ni1−xFex)3P–O/NiOOH heterostructure. DFT simulations demonstrate that the synergistic effect between Fe–O of (Ni1−xFex)3P–O and NiOOH could still efficiently catalyze the OER. Thus, atomic dissolution does not obviously lower the activity. However, the self-reconstruction layer would change the original interface and increase the surface adsorbed bubbles, which determines the degradation of OER performance. Eventually, a superaerophobic heterostructure of (Ni1−xFex)3P/NiFe–OH–P is prepared by changing reconstruction conditions. The catalyst not only exhibits excellent activity with an overpotential of 233 mV at 10 mA cm−2, but also obtains dramatically enhanced stability with a decrease in current density from 120 to 100 mA cm−2 after a 120 h potentiostatic test.

Electron directed migration cooperated with thermodynamic regulation over bimetallic NiFeP/g-C3N4 for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Qiaohong Zhu,Bocheng Qiu,Huan Duan,Yeteng Gong,Zengwei Qin,Bin Shen,Mingyang Xing,Jinlong Zhang

Bimetallic phosphides have attracted considerable attention in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), owing to its thermodynamic feasibility. Most reports attributed the HER activity to the reduction of free energy of protonation (ΔG H* ), however, few revealed the whereabouts of the photo-induced electrons, which makes the mechanism of HER not very clear. Herein, nickel-iron bimetallic phosphide (NiFeP) is designed onto graphitic carbon nitride (NiFeP/g-C 3 N 4 ) for the photocatalytic HER, which exhibits a high hydrogen production of 3.549 mmol g −1  h −1 . It is found that the co-catalyst of NiFeP can not only reduce the ΔG H* , but also make the photogenerated electrons transfer directionally, which play a synergistic role in enhancing the activity of HER. The reduction of ΔG H2O and ΔG H* over NiFeP in HER can be well demonstrated by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, the localized distribution of electrons on the surface of NiFeP is verified by measuring the lifetime of photo-generated carriers combined with the REDOX experiment. The shortened lifetime τ, decreased τ1 and τ2 of NiFeP/g-C 3 N 4 indicate that the photoexcited electrons of g-C 3 N 4 are directly transferred to the co-catalyst surface, contributing to the worse delocalization capacity of electrons on the ca-catalyst and its easier reactions with protons trapped on the co-catalyst surface. Furthermore, the degradation with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) confirms the photogenerated holes over 5NiFeP/g-C 3 N 4 are mainly concentrated on the surface of g-C 3 N 4 to decompose H 2 O for the generation of OH, while the photogenerated electrons are directed to the NiFeP to react with the neighboring PMS or protons to form SO 4 − or H 2 . Besides, the density of state intensity (DOS) also confirms the photogenerated electron migration pathway at the metal-semiconductor (NiFeP-g-C 3 N 4 ) interface. Our research clarifies the mechanism of bimetallic phosphides co-catalytic HER system, which will provide theoretical guidance for the design and preparation of multi-metallic center photocatalytic system with a higher HER activity in the future.

Improving the performance of water splitting electrodes by composite plating with nano-SiO2

Hao Yang,Fusheng Li,Xiujuan Wu,Peili Zhang,Wenlong Li,Suyan Cao,Yu Shan,Licheng Sun

The electrochemical splitting of water requires efficient functional electrodes. Herein, we report the fabrication of electrocatalyst consisted of an electrodeposited NiFeP alloy film which was composite plated with nano-SiO 2 on nickel foam. The structure and morphology of the film were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that the surface area of this NiFeP -SiO 2 co-deposition alloy film can be significantly increased after electrochemical etching in a KOH solution. The water splitting properties of the alloy film were evaluated using electrochemistry . By using the NiFeP -SiO 2 / NF (Etched) as a bifunctional electrode, total water splitting has been demonstrated in a two-electrode cell with a current density of 10 mA cm −2  at an applied voltage of 1.57 V, which exhibited enhanced water splitting activity in comparison to the analogue cell using the pristine NiFeP / NF electrode.

Ultra-stable trimetallic phosphide heterostructure with regulated electronic structure for overall water splitting at high current densities

Daorui Wang,Xinruo Luo,Yuxiang Shang,Yuanyuan Wang,Haonan Zhang,Shuo Wang,Chenmeng Cui,Sungsik Lee,Shijie Hao,Ying Yang

Developing ultra-stable electrocatalysts for highly efficient overall water splitting at high current density (HCD) is critical for renewable hydrogen/oxygen production in the industry. However, the most active electrocatalysts for large current-driven water splitting are seriously handicapped by insufficient electrical contact kinetics due to the intensive bubble overflow. Herein, we demonstrate the ultra-stable trimetallic phosphides of NiFeP/NiCoP catalysts on a hydrophilic Ni foam skeleton via a corrosion-hydrothermal-phosphating strategy. The optimized NiFeP/NiCoP catalyst stabilizes for 600 h at −1 A cm −2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline solution, and it only needs low overpotentials of 237 and 314 mV to drive HER and OER at 1 A cm −2 , respectively. As expected, the optimized NiFeP/NiCoP electrode maintains 1000 h at 0.5 A cm −2 for water splitting, ranking among the top performers among reported catalysts. Such excellent performance could be attributed to the fast electron transfer for electrochemical reactions , the electron-deficient Fe/Ni sites contribute to forming robust metal oxyhydroxide during OER, and electron-rich Co sites facilitate H adsorption during HER. The findings present a highly promising candidate for ultra-stable non-noble metal electrocatalysts , offering a viable option for hydrogen/oxygen supply for fuel cells and metal-air batteries .

Jianwu Wen,Shuangqin Chen,Mingjie Zhou,Bei Xu,Hao Chen,Yanping Zhang,He Zhu,Si Lan,Tao Feng

Electrocatalytic water splitting is a promising method for producing green hydrogen, but hinder by sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process. It is urgent to develop highly efficient OER electrodes. Amorphous alloys are novel promising catalysts for various fields, especially amorphous alloys composites with nanocrystals exhibit superior performances in HER and OER. However, the effect of the proportion of amorphous structure versus nanocrystals on catalytic performances remain unknown. Herein, a batch of non-precious metal NiFeP composites composed by dual phase of nanostructured metallic glass and nanocrystal with various proportions were fabricated by electrodeposition facilely. Experimentally, an ultra-low OER overpotential of 248   mV at current density of 50   mA/cm 2 was achieved for NiFeP-1.4   V. This work not only provides an excellent catalyst, but also a novel method to produce amorphous-nanocrystalline composites with superior catalytic performance.

Durable high-current-density seawater oxidation enabled by amorphous NiFeP via F doping

Liang Dong,Jinghan Zhang,Qifeng Han,Yujie Feng,Shengjun Sun,Yongchao Yao,Mohamed S. Hamdy,Changliang Liu,Xuping Sun

Seawater electrolysis holds great promise for green hydrogen production, yet chloride ions in seawater can trigger competing chlorine chemistry, generating corrosive substances that degrade anodic performance. In this work, we report an amorphous F-doped NiFeP catalyst grown in situ on nickel foam (F-NiFeP/NF) for durable alkaline seawater oxidation. F-NiFeP/NF requires an overpotential of only 353 mV to achieve a current density of 1000 mA cm −2 and operates stably for 1000 h in alkaline seawater. F doping not only accelerates catalyst surface reconstruction processes but also favors the selective adsorption of OH − on the anode surface. Furthermore, an anion exchange membrane electrolyzer assembled with F-NiFeP/NF as the anode and Pt/C/NF as the cathode runs stably at 500 mA cm −2 for 450 h, demonstrating its potential for practical seawater electrolysis.
