Constructing superhydrophobic ZIF-8 layer with bud-like surface morphology on PDMS composite membrane for highly efficient ethanol/water separation

Yong Pan,Tengyang Zhu,Qing Xia,Xi Yu,Yan Wang

Emerging pervaporation technology is very promising to realize clean and renewable bioethanol recovery from biomass fermentation broth. The huge challenge of this technology is the need for a pervaporation membrane with high separation performance. Based on the solution-diffusion mechanism, pervaporation membrane for ethanol recovery should possess hydrophobic selective layer to improve sorption ability toward ethanol molecules, thereby enhancing the separation performance. In this study, a superhydrophobic zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) layer with a nano-level bud-like surface morphology was grown on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite membrane via ZIF-8 particle dip-casting, secondary seeded growth, and hydrophobic modification by n-octadecylphosphonic acid for highly efficient ethanol/water separation. The mole ratio of 2-methylimidazole and zinc nitrate (Hmim/Zn 2+ ) in the process of ZIF-8 secondary growth was systematically studied to construct appropriate micro-nano structure on PDMS composite membrane. The resultant optimal composite membrane exhibited a water contact angle of about 163° and an ethanol contact angle of 0°. In addition, it also displayed an outstanding separation factor of 17.4 corresponding to a total flux of 0.64 kg/m 2 h with 5 wt% ethanol aqueous solution at 30 ℃, and thus the superior pervaporation performance to most other reported PDMS-based mixed matrix membranes. The strategy of constructing superhydrophobic layer on PDMS composite membrane may provide a meaningful guidance for preparing high-performance pervaporation membrane for organic recovery from aqueous solution.

Pervaporation separation of levulinic acid aqueous solution by ZSM-5/PDMS composite membrane

Zongqi Zhang,Yuanfeng Wu,Lijing Gao,Guomin Xiao

This work aims at investigating the special application of ZSM-5/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane being used for pervaporation separation of levulinic acid aqueous solutions. The effects of temperature, downstream pressure, feed concentration, and raw material ratio on the separation performance are investigated by self-made flat-sheet films. When the flow rate of feed pump remained at 0.4 ml/min (10 wt% levulinic acid), a levulinic acid permeation flux of 334.13 g/(m 2 h) and a separation factor of 2.382 at 75°C are observed over the composite membrane doped with 10 wt% ZSM-5. In addition, the acid resistance is enhanced after the PDMS membranes are doped with ZSM-5. Besides, the functionalized process also makes the membranes increase in its hydrophobicity. The results demonstrate that the ZSM-5/PDMS-based membranes show profound prospects for separating levulinic acid aqueous solution.

Hydrophobic sandwich-like PVDF/rGO/PDMS composite membrane with fast electrothermal/photothermal response for crude oil removal

Jiale Zhou,Kunquan Li,Zhuohan Chen,Xiaojing Su,Huali Xie,Lei Yao,Yunhui Wu,Xiaofan Zhang,Lu Chen,Xuting Wu,Wenjian Wu

Functional membranes with electrothermal/photothermal effects are considered an effective method for separating water/viscous crude oil mixtures. However, the loading of photothermal and electrothermal particles in polymeric membranes with poor compatibility will deteriorate the membrane performance, leading to the unstable photothermal/electrothermal effects. Therefore, we prepared a hydrophobic sandwich structure polyvinylidene fluoride/reduced graphene oxide/polydimethylsiloxane (PVDF/rGO/PDMS) composite membrane using a two-step electrospinning process, which improved the binding force between the photothermal/electrothermal particles and the matrix with the composite membrane exhibiting super fast electric heating and photothermal effect. The temperature of the composite membrane surface rapidly reached to 162.5 °C within 30 s at 25 V. In addition, the addition of graphene (GO) improved the mechanical properties of the composite membrane. Meantime, the composite membrane possessed stable hydrophobicity and lipophilicity, which was beneficial for separating water/viscous crude oil mixtures. Owing to the controllable pore structure and special wetting behavior, the water-in-oil emulsion was successfully separated. Importantly, the separation rates of the water/crude oil mixtures under the electrothermal effect was 2340 kg·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 . Thus, this study provides a new method for preparing hydrophobic sandwich-like PVDF/rGO/PDMS composite membrane with electrothermal/photothermal effects, which has significant potential for engineering applications in high-viscosity crude oil removal and water-in-oil emulsion separation.

High-Gain Millimeter-Wave Stretchable Array Antenna Based on Electrospun-BaTiO3/PDMS Composite Membrane Substrate

Luyang Sun,Rui Wang,Buyun Yu,Lu Ju,Tongshuai Sun,Zehui Chen,Xiaoli Peng,Hao Chen,Yunqian Dai,Weibing Lu

Recent developments in wearable wireless communication systems have significantly increased the demand for stretchable antennas. The substrate, which is a critical component for antennas, has a great impact on the antenna’s electromagnetic performance and mechanical properties, particularly at millimeter-wave frequencies. However, conventional methods of incorporating low-loss ceramics into stretchable polymers cannot achieve an equilibrium between low dielectric loss and optimal stretchability. To resolve this issue, we present a novel approach that synergistically integrates electrospun barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanofibers with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), achieving a composite membrane substrate with ultralow dielectric loss and exceptional stretchability. Based on this advanced substrate, we develop a wearable array antenna that demonstrates stretchability and remarkable radiation characteristics, effectively addressing the constraints associated with conventional PDMS-based antennas. This proposed antenna is expected to be an excellent candidate for next-generation wearable and stretchable millimeter-wave 5G wireless communication.

High-flux corrugated PDMS composite membrane fabricated by using nanofiber substrate

Jiahui Li,Yang Pan,Wenqi Ji,Haipeng Zhu,Gongping Liu,Guangru Zhang,Wanqin Jin

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a benchmarked membrane material for pervaporation , gas separation, and nanofiltration , remaining challenges in achieving high-flux membrane. Herein, we proposed a high-flux PDMS membrane with corrugated morphology realized by simply coating PDMS solution on nanofiber substrate. It was demonstrated that the electrospun nanofiber substrate with highly interconnected and porous structures could generate a corrugated PDMS membrane layer with highly increased surface area and meanwhile remarkably reduce transport resistance of the membrane. By optimizing the pore structure of nanofiber substrate and reducing the membrane thickness to sub-micrometer, the corrugated PDMS membrane exhibited up to one order of magnitude higher permeation flux compared with state-of-the-arts PDMS membranes for pervaporation separation of ethanol/water mixtures. Specifically, using a 5 wt% ethanol/water mixture as feed at 60 °C, a total flux of 8.7 kg m −2 h −1 and a separation factor of 7.2 were obtained. This work provides a facile approach to develop nanostructured membranes with highly enhanced transport properties.

Preparation and characterization of Silicalite-1/PDMS surface sieving pervaporation membrane for separation of ethanol/water mixture

Xiangyan Liu,Deng Hu,Meng Li,Jianming Zhang,Zhigao Zhu,Gaofeng Zeng,Yanfeng Zhang,Yuhan Sun

To improve the pervaporation performance of Silicalite-1/PDMS composite membrane by adding a small amount of Silicalite-1 zeolite, novel Silicalite-1/PDMS surface sieving membranes (SSMs) were prepared by attaching Silicalite-1 particles on the PDMS membrane surface. The obtained membranes and traditional mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) were characterized by SEM, XRD, TGA, FT-IR, and pervaporation separation of ethanol–water mixture. Effects of Silicalite-1 particles content, feed temperatures, and feed compositions on the separation performance were discussed. From the cross-section view SEM images of SSMs, a two-layer structure was observed. The thickness of the Silicalite-1 layer was about 300 nm to 2 μm. The TGA analysis indicates that the zeolite concentration in 3 wt % SSM is lower than 10 wt % MMMs. In the ethanol/water pervaporation experiment, the separation factor of Silicalite-1/PDMS SSMs increased considerably compared with pure PDMS membrane. When the suspensions concentrations of Silicalite-1 particles reached 3 wt %, the separation factor was about 217% increase over pure PDMS membrane and 52.9% increase over 10 wt % Silicalite-1/PDMS MMMs. As the ethanol concentration in the feed increases, the separation factor of SSMs increases, whereas permeation flux decreases. At the same time, with increasing operating temperature, the permeation flux of SSMs increased. The stability of SSMs at high temperature is better than the traditional MMMs. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132 , 42460.

Silica hollow spheres-based superhydrophobic PDMS composite membrane for enhanced acetone permselective pervaporation

Yue Sun,Huhu Zhao,Heng Mao,Mengxue Duan,Kun Wang,Nanbin Bao,Zhi-Ping Zhao,Huanjun Li

Superhydrophobic mixed matrix membranes (SMMMs) are very desirable for efficient separation of biofuel recovery from the fermentation broth via pervaporation. In this work, hydrophobic silica hollow spheres (SHSs) were elaborately prepared by template method and subsequent silane modification. The resulting SHSs were incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix to construct superhydrophobic SHSs/PDMS MMMs. The superhydrophobic composite membrane with 15 wt% SHS contents showed a water contact angle of up to 160°, with low sliding angle of less than 5°. As a result, for the permselective pervaporation of 1 wt% acetone aqueous solution at 35 °C, the optimized composite membrane with separation factor of 46 increased by 256%, and maintained a comparable total flux compared with the pure PDMS membrane. The slight decrease of the total flux was mainly attributed to the reduced water partial flux resulting from water repellency of the superhydrophobic membrane surface. Thus, our proposed strategy of constructing superhydrophobic composite membranes may provide new insights into the development of high-performance pervaporation membrane for biofuel recovery.

Pervaporation recovery of aromatic compounds from lemon oil wastewater using a uniform zeolitic imidazolate framework/polydimethylsiloxane composite membrane

Dongyi Yang,Cheng Chen,Jiqing Xie,Yuanqing Ye,Zhi Zhou,Huiyun Liao,Zhong Yao

The application of pervaporation technology in the recovery of aromatic compounds from water faces the challenge of low performance. In this paper, a uniform zeolitic imidazolate framework/polydimethyl-siloxane (ZIF-8/PDMS) composite membrane was fabricated by means of contra-diffusion crystallization and a casting method in sequence. The diffusion time was optimized to be 24 h. ZIF-8/PDMS showed improving performance to pure PDMS . The permeation flux of linalool, neral, and geranial in ZIF-8/PDMS increased by 73.3%, 110.9%, and 106.0%, respectively; and the separation factors were also improved. The separation effect of neral (cis-citral) was much better than that of geranial (trans-citral), suggesting the potential enantioselectivity. In ternary model system, the separation of citral (neral and geranial) was competitively restrained by the presence of linalool. ZIF-8/PDMS also showed good performance in real lemon oil. After treatment for 9 h, the recovery rates of linalool, neral and geranial were 97.20%, 96.15%, and 92.56%, respectively.

E-Skin Based on the Microspinous MXene/PDMS Composite Film for Sensing Pressure and Electrophysiological Signals

Qiaoqiao Bai,Xin Liu,Xiaohu Shi,Ziwei Wang,Ziyi Wu,Qizhi Dong,Nan Liu,Tang Liu,Song Liu

With the rapid development of technologies, such as the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence, the flexible electronic skin (e-skin) that bridges the material and the physical world presents vast market potential. However, the development of cost-effective, multifunctional e-skin remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a dual-functional e-skin based on a microspinous MXene/PDMS composite film is prepared by using a low-cost natural template method. The e-skin has good performance, making it suitable for detecting small pressures and joint movements as well as high-quality electromyogram and electrocardiogram signals. The e-skin can monitor a variety of human motions and electrophysiological signals, positioning it as a promising tool in the areas of motion detection and health monitoring.

ZIF-8/PDMS mixed matrix membranes for propane/nitrogen mixture separation: Experimental result and permeation model validation

Manquan Fang,Chilung Wu,Zhengjin Yang,Tao Wang,Yang Xia,Jiding Li

In this contribution, zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were prepared for hydrocarbon recovery using propane/nitrogen mixture as a model feed gas pair. All MMMs obtained a homogeneous particle dispersion and intimate interface interaction, which were confirmed by high resolution scanning electric microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) mapping. Gas permeation test shows that ZIF-8/PDMS MMMs demonstrate an enhanced separation performance with improved separation selectivity (38% higher than that of pure PDMS membranes) and propane permeance over 100   GPU. However, it is worth noting that the enhanced selectivity and decreased permeance of MMMs contradict the prediction by Maxwell model, which suggests the existence of pore blockage and inhibited chain mobility at polymer-particle interface. The inhibited chain mobility is further confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis. Based on these observations, a new modified Maxwell model is proposed taking non-ideal interface morphology and particle agglomeration into consideration. Both the selectivity and gas permeance predicted by the proposed model are in good agreement with experimental data, which thereby extends the application scope of original Maxwell model.

Preparation of modified MFI-type/PDMS composite membranes for the separation of dichlorobenzene isomers via pervaporation

Qiu-Ping He,Ying-Ying Wang,Peng-Fei Wang,Xiao-Ming Dou

Zeolite–polymer composite membranes have become promising and effective materials for the pervaporative separation of liquids, especially for isomeric mixtures. In this paper, silicalite-1/PDMS composite membranes have been used to investigate the separation of dichlorobenzene (DCB) isomers via pervaporation for the first time. Silicalite-1 zeolites modified by the silane coupling agent, NH3–C3H6–Si(OC2H5)3, have been incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Then, the silicalite-1/PDMS composite membranes have been successfully prepared on porous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) supports. The morphology and structure of the silicalite-1 zeolites and silicalite-1/PDMS composite membranes have been characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM and BET techniques. The results show that the modified silicalite-1 zeolite particles have smaller pore sizes dispersed more uniformly in the active layers of the silicalite-1/PDMS composite membranes and present fewer aggregation and pinholes formed by the accumulation of zeolite particles. The silicalite-1/PDMS composite membranes are all dense and continuous with good homogeneity. To evaluate the pervaporative separation performance of the DCB isomers, the unmodified and modified silicalite-1/PDMS composite membranes have been further tested in single-isomer and binary-isomer systems at 60 °C. The modified silicalite-1/PDMS composite membranes present higher DCB isomer separation factors. The separation factors of the modified silicalite-1/PDMS composite membranes in the binary-isomer systems for p-/o-DCB and p-/m-DCB are 3.53 and 5.63, respectively. The permeate flux of p-DCB through the modified silicalite-1/PDMS composite membranes in the p-/o-DCB binary-isomer system is 116.7 g m−2 h−1 and in the p-/m-DCB binary-isomer system, it is 93.5 g m−2 h−1. The result provides a new approach towards the pervaporative separation of DCB isomers from their mixture for future industrialization applications.

Silver-Hydrogel/PDMS film with high mechanical strength for anti-interference strain sensor

Ning Kang,Sheng Zhang,Fu Tang,Jie Wang,Lidong Li

Hydrogels have recently emerged as promising candidates for wearable strain sensors. However, their poor mechanical stability and fragility limited their applications in many fields. Inspired by the skins, we developed a double-layer structured silver-Hydrogel/PDMS composite film (Ag-Hydrogel/PDMS) by chemically bonding the PDMS with a conductive Ag-Hydrogel layer. After assembled with the zinc, air electrodes and a fixed resistor, a self-powered Ag-Hydrogel/PDMS strain sensor was obtained. The mechanical properties of the Ag-Hydrogel/PDMS strain sensor was significantly enhanced due to the chemically bonded PDMS film. Compared to PDMS and Ag-Hydrogel alone, the tensile stress of Ag-Hydrogel/PDMS composite film increased by 3.4 and 58.1 times, respectively. The prepared Ag-Hydrogel/PDMS composite film could easily lift a 1050 g item without obviously interfacial failure. And it could output different voltage signals upon various finger motions without any external power supplies. Interestingly, the inert nature of PDMS also greatly improved the anti-interference property of the Ag-Hydrogel/PDMS strain sensor, as it protected the Ag-Hydrogel from the complicated environments. Moreover, excellent antibacterial activity of the Ag-Hydrogel/PDMS strain sensor against both of the E. coli and S. aureus bacteria was observed, which could be ascribed to the distribution of Ag nanocubes in the hydrogel matrix. The hydrophobic property of the PDMS layer further entitled the Ag-Hydrogel/PDMS strain sensor with a good bacterial anti-adhesion property. These characteristics guarantee the self-powered Ag-Hydrogel/PDMS strain sensor with potential application as wearable and portable electronic devices in complicated environments.
