Air and water pollution poses a serious threat to public health and the ecological environment worldwide. Particulate matter (PM) is the major air pollutant, and its primary sources are processes that require high temperatures, such as fossil fuel combustion and vehicle exhaust. PM0.3 can penetrate and seriously harm the bronchi of the lungs, but it is difficult to remove PM0.3 due to its small size. Therefore, PM0.3 air filters that are highly efficient and resistant to high temperatures must be developed. Polyimide (PI) is an excellent polymer with a high temperature resistance and a good mechanical property. Air filters made from PI nanofibers have a high PM removal efficiency and a low air flow resistance. Herein, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) was used to modify PI nanofibers to fabricate air filters with a high specific surface area and filtration efficiency. Compared with traditional PI membranes, the ZIF-8/PI multifunction nanofiber membranes achieved super-high filtration efficiency for ultrafine particles (PM0.3, 100%), and the pressure drop was only 63 Pa. The filtration mechanism of performance improvement caused by the introduction of ZIF-8/PI nanofiber membrane is explored. Moreover, the ZIF-8/PI nanofiber membranes exhibited excellent thermal stability (300 C) and efficient water–oil separation ability (99.85%).

Polyimide (PI) nanofiber materials have garnered attention in the field of high-temperature filtration due to their exceptional thermal stability. Enhancing their filtration efficiency for fine particulate matter (PM2.5–0.3) and exploring their performance limits under high-temperature conditions are crucial for high-temperature filtration applications. In this study, a metal wire-based needle-free electrospinning technique was employed to electrospin polyimide (PI) material, successfully fabricating nanofiber membranes with an average fiber diameter of 122 nm within just 10 min at an elevated electrospinning voltage of 80 kV (electric field:333.33 kV/m). The Fine-diameter PI nanofiber membrane achieved a filtration efficiency of 99.99 % for PM0.3 and operated at a low resistance of 189.18 Pa. After continuous treatment at a high temperature of 390 °C for one hour, the Fine-diameter PI nanofiber membrane still maintained a filtration efficiency of 99.96 % for PM0.3 and was capable of completely filtering PM2.5. This demonstrates the excellent stability and reliability of the Fine-diameter PI nanofiber membrane under extreme temperature conditions. Additionally, the membrane exhibited outstanding hydrophobic properties, with a static contact angle of 130 ± 3°, aiding in maintaining its filtration performance in humid environments. The Fine-diameter PI nanofiber membrane developed in this study offers a novel fabrication strategy for PM filtration in high-temperature environments and provides new insights into its limit performance.

With the escalating issue of air pollution, the development of air filtration materials that can efficiently remove particulate pollutants, particularly nanosized particles, from air has attracted more and more research attention in recent years. Electrospun nanofiber membranes with a nanoscale pore structure have been widely used as air filtration materials. Along these lines, in this work, polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropyle (PVDF-HFP) nanofiber membranes with a multihierarchical gradient structure were fabricated by varying the sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) concentration. The proposed multihierarchical gradient structure was composed of upper, middle, and lower nanofiber layers, which could effectively filter PM0.3. The decreased nanofiber diameter by increasing the SDS concentration was attributed to the low surface tension and high charge balance. Compared with the single- and double-hierarchical PVDF-HFP nanofiber membranes, the triple-hierarchical PVDF-HFP nanofiber membranes demonstrated excellent air filtration performance. Among them, F014 yielded optimal air filtration performance, exhibiting a high filtration efficiency of 99.50%, a low pressure drop of 71.4 Pa, and a quality factor of 0.0878 Pa–1. Furthermore, the filtration efficiency was maintained above 99% and the pressure drop just increased by 27.4% over a 40 min air filtration test, which indicated that F014 showcased exceptional durability, owing to the multihierarchical gradient structure. Our work paves the way for the fabrication of electrospun nanofiber membranes with a multihierarchical gradient structure using a straightforward method, highlighting their potential as an alternative to traditional air filter materials for various practical applications.

In the background of air pollution and regular COVID-19 prevention, personal protective masks are necessary for our daily life. However, protective masks with high PM0.3 filtration usually have poor air permeability and are mostly disposable, leading to a heavy burden on the environment. In this work, a reusable membrane based on piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] nanofibers embedded with BaTiO3 nanoparticles (BTO NPs) was developed. The P(VDF-TrFE)/BTO composite nanofibers not only have enhanced piezoelectricity and surface polarity but also have reduced diameters that could be beneficial for electrostatic adhesion, pole–polar interactions, and mechanical sieving to increase the PM0.3 capture capacity. Moreover, the BTO NPs also improved the charge storage capacity of the composite membrane, which could further enhance the PM0.3 filtration efficiency after corona treatment. The piezoelectric mask based on P(VDF-TrFE)/BTO composite nanofibers has high filtration efficiencies of 96% for PM0.3 and 98% for bacteria, while the pressure drop was only 182 Pa, which is lower than the commercial N95 standard of 343.2 Pa. Furthermore, the piezoelectric mask has a long and stable filtration performance after 5 cycles of 75% alcohol disinfection, demonstrating that the P(VDF-TrFE)/BTO composite membrane has a potential application in personal protective masks with comfortable and reusable properties.

Abstract Air pollution caused by the rapid development of industry has always been a great issue to the environment and human being’s health. However, the efficient and persistent filtration to PM 0.3 remains a great challenge. Herein, a self-powered filter with micro–nano composite structure composed of polybutanediol succinate (PBS) nanofiber membrane and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber/polystyrene (PS) microfiber hybrid mats was prepared by electrospinning. The balance between pressure drop and filtration efficiency was achieved through the combination of PAN and PS. In addition, an arched TENG structure was created using the PAN nanofiber/PS microfiber composite mat and PBS fiber membrane. Driven by respiration, the two fiber membranes with large difference in electronegativity achieved contact friction charging cycles. The open-circuit voltage of the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) can reach to about 8 V, and thus the high filtration efficiency for particles was achieved by the electrostatic capturing. After contact charging, the filtration efficiency of the fiber membrane for PM 0.3 can reach more than 98% in harsh environments with a PM 2.5 mass concentration of 23,000 µg/m 3 , and the pressure drop is about 50 Pa, which doesn’t affect people’s normal breathing. Meanwhile, the TENG can realize self-powered supply by continuously contacting and separating the fiber membrane driven by respiration, which can ensure the long-term stability of filtration efficiency. The filter mask can maintain a high filtration efficiency (99.4%) of PM 0.3 for 48 consecutive hours in daily environments. Graphical abstract

This study addresses the need for high-performance and sustainable air filters by developing a bio-based, high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. Current HEPA filters often rely on non-biodegradable materials, creating environmental burdens. In this paper, we presented a HEPA filter fabricated from natural basalt fiber (BF) and nanocellulose fiber. The developed filter featured a sandwich structure with electrospun nanocellulose fiber deposited onto a base BF layer, followed by a second BF layer and heat treatment. Various techniques were employed to characterize the obtained sample, and the results showed that the nonwoven BF fabric significantly reduced the pressure drop of the filter by up to 60 %. The nanocellulose fiber played a crucial role in achieving a remarkable filtration efficiency of 99.99 % for PM 0.3 . BF-based filter demonstrated exceptional fire resistance, hydrophobia, durability, and ease of cleaning, maintaining its effectiveness at temperatures up to 150 °C. Notably, it exhibited significantly better biodegradability than commercially available HEPA filters. By employing a hierarchical structure of sustainable basalt and cellulose fibers, this study paved the way for the development of next-generation hazardous particulate matter filters with exceptional performance in harsh conditions and reduced environmental impact.

Air particulate pollution from increasing industrialization poses an enormous threat to public health. It is therefore of particular importance to develop air filters with excellent filtration properties and antimicrobial properties. Here we design a novel air filter for outdoor personal protection. The air filter’s composite nanofibrous materials are prepared by electrospinning method using polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as the base polymer, silica dioxide (SiO 2 ) as the electret r and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the antimicrobial agent. Fourier-infrared spectroscopy, surface potential, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization reveal the successful incorporation of SiO 2 and CTAB into PAN . The air filtration test shows that the composite nanofibrous membrane has outstanding PM 0.3 filtration efficiency (98.5%) and lower pressure drop (76 Pa) at 32 L/min flow rate. Moreover, the durability tests show that the composite nanofibrous membranes have a long lifetime in terms of filtration performance. The filtration efficiency is reduced by only 2% after 48 h. In addition, the antimicrobial properties were tested by implementing both E. coli and S. aureus with up to a 99% bacteriostasis rate. Thus, this work improves the application potential of high-performance air filters for the removal of particulate pollution and may provide useful insights into the design of next-generation air filters suitable for applications in high antibacterial applications.

Biomass materials have been widely used in various industries to achieve a carbon-neutral and sustainable society. Here, we show a heterogeneous corn-based precursor strategy that transforms low-value agricultural waste into structural air filters composed of alternating microfibers (2.61 ± 1.11 µm) with grooved surface and nanofibers (0.29 ± 0.18 µm). Utilizing a green solute-solvent system of zein derived from corn and cellulose extracted from corn straw, the process ensures sustainability across raw material sources, fabrication, filtration, and end-of-life degradation. By tailoring relative humidity and incorporating cellulose, an incomplete nonsolvent-induced phase separation is triggered, leading to a corn-based dual-network filter with high filtration performance (>99.99% PM 0.3 removal) and low pressure drop (45 Pa). The life cycle assessment demonstrates that the corn-based filter results in lower carbon emissions and environmental impacts than petroleum-based filters. This work provides a promising pathway toward the development of sustainable and disposable filtration materials.
