High mannose is overexpressed on the cell surface during carcinogenesis; however, there are currently no efficient techniques for its detection. Herein, we propose an assay called RADAR ( r emote high m a nnose d etection on cell surf a ce with C R ISPR) for the quantification of high mannose, leveraging the integration of high mannose-binding aptamer and CRISPR technique. The high mannose-binding aptamer is hybridized with a locker, which is released upon specific binding to high mannose. The released locker then activates CRISPR/Cas12a to produce a fluorescence signal. The "remote" concept in RADAR refers to the recognition of high mannose occurring on the cell surface, while signal generation takes place in a solution separate from the target. This feature makes RADAR suitable for the detection of suspended bio-samples without the need for sophisticated imaging. RADAR can detect high mannose Man 9 with a limit of detection of 2.5 nM, distinguish cancer cells from non-cancerous cells, and profile high mannose level in human serum for potential non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) diagnosis. This work represents the first attempt to integrate CRISPR technology into the aptasensing of high mannose, which may serve as a synthetic biology-enabled tool in glycochemistry and glycobiology.

The transparency of modern battlefields, dominated by multispectral surveillance, demands adaptive camouflage that can dynamically evade both infrared and radar detection. However, the fundamental conflict between the high electromagnetic loss required for radar stealth and the low emissivity essential for infrared stealth has long impeded progress toward such intelligent and compatible systems. Herein, we break this limitation through superelastic magnetic nanofiber aerogels (MNFAs) featuring a semi-honeycomb cellular architecture. Such a design enables on-demand, synchronous switching between “on” and “off” states for dual-band stealth, while maintaining outstanding mechanical robustness, as evidenced by stable performance over 500 compression cycles at 50% strain. In the released state, the MNFAs exhibit exceptional radar wave absorption (reflection loss of –42 dB) and outstanding thermal insulation (the thermal conductivity of 51 mW m −1 K −1 ), providing simultaneous stealth against both spectra. Upon 70% compressive strain, the effective absorption bandwidth vanishes while the surface temperature rises dramatically, simultaneously disabling both the radar and infrared stealth functions. This study elucidates the mechanism of mechanically driven multispectral synergistic intelligent regulation through multi-scale analysis, providing a new paradigm for the design of next-generation adaptive camouflage materials.

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is traditionally applied to smooth surfaces in which the assumption of half-space is an adequate approximation that does not deviate much from reality. Nonetheless, using GPR for internal structure characterization of tree trunks requires measurements on an irregularly shaped closed curve. A typical hyperbola fitting has no physical meaning in this new context since the reflection patterns are strongly associated with the shape of the tree trunk. Instead of a clinical hyperbola, the reflections give rise to complex-shaped patterns that are difficult to be analyzed even in the absence of clutter. In this paper, a novel processing scheme is described which can interpret complex reflection patterns assuming a circular target subject to any arbitrary shaped surface. The proposed methodology can be applied using commercial hand-held antennas in real time, avoiding computationally costly tomographic approaches that require the usage of custom-made bespoke antenna arrays. The validity of the current approach is illustrated both with numerical and real experiments.

The vacuum-sintering technology was adopted to prepared Si3N4-SiC composite ceramic, a type of Radar Wave-Absorbing materials (RAW). The mechanical performances of the composite materials were tested and the influences of SiC powers on the mechanics performances and microstructure of Si3N4 ceramics were investigated. The results show that the sintering density, the content of size ofβ-Si3N4 and the strength of Si3N4-SiC all decrease along with the increase of SiC powers in sample, compared with the pure matrix Si3N4 .Meanwhile, Relationship between SiC content and relative permittivity of Si3N4-SiC within the frequency range of 8.2–12.4 GHz (X-band) was studied. The average of relative permittivityεof Si3N4-SiC increased from 7.878 to 13.88 and the average of dielectric loss tanδincreased from 5.6×10-3 to 0.7869 when the content of SiC increased from 0 to 15 wt.%. The excellent microwave absorbing abilities of Si3N4–SiC ceramic were attributed to the interfacial polarization at interface between Si3N4 and SiC and at grain boundary between SiC nanocrystals.

Ash dieback, acute oak decline (AOD), and Xylella Fastidiosa are emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) that have spread rapidly in European forests during the last decade. Quarantine measurements have mostly failed to repress the outbreaks and millions of trees have already been infected. Identifying infected trees in a nondestructive manner is of high importance for monitoring, managing, and preventing EIDs. The aim of this article is to examine the capabilities of ground penetrating radar (GPR) on evaluating the internal structure of tree trunks and detecting tree decay associated with EIDs. Traditionally used processing schemes tuned for GPR line acquisitions are modified accordingly to be compatible with the new measurement configurations. In particular, a detection framework is presented based on a modified Kirchhoff and a reverse-time migration. Both of the aforementioned methodologies are compatible with measurements taken along closed irregular curves assuming a homogeneous permittivity distribution. To that extent, prior to migration, a novel focal criterion is used that estimates the bulk permittivity of the host medium from the measured B-scans. The suggested detection scheme is successfully tested on both numerical and laboratory measurements, indicating that GPR has the potential to become a coherent and practical tool for detecting tree decay associated with EIDs.

Among all the forensic applications in which it has become an important exploration tool, ground penetrating radar (GPR) methodology is being increasingly adopted for buried landmine localisation, a framework in which it is expected to improve the operations efficiency, given the high resolution imaging capability and the possibility of detecting both metallic and non-metallic landmines. In this context, this study presents landmine detection equipment based on multi-polarisation: a ground coupled GPR platform, which ensures suitable penetration/resolution performance without affecting the safety of surveys, thanks to the inclusion of a flexible ballistic shielding for supporting eventual blasts. The experimental results have shown that not only can the blanket absorb blast-induced flying fragments impacts, but that it also allows for the acquisition of data with the accuracy required to generate a correct 3D reconstruction of the subsurface. The produced GPR volume is then processed through an automated learning scheme based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) capable of detecting buried objects with a high degree of accuracy.

The rapid development of multispectral
detection technology
has
severely restricted single-band stealth materials, driving the demand
for radar–infrared-compatible multispectral stealth. However,
conflicts between the stealth mechanisms of these two bands pose significant
challenges. Herein, a lightweight and highly elastic composite aerogel
composed of 0D Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, 1D bacterial
cellulose (BC), and 2D MXene nanosheets is fabricated via self-assembly
and bidirectional freeze-drying. The porous structure and component
optimization effectively prevent MXene nanosheet stacking and improve
impedance mismatch. Benefiting from excellent dielectric–magnetic
coupling, the aerogel achieves a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −76 dB at 1.52 mm, the absorption efficiency per unit
thickness reaches an excellent value of −50 dB/mm, an effective
absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.12 GHz at 1.54 mm, and a maximum radar
cross-sectional (RCS) reduction of 30 dB·m 2 , demonstrating
outstanding radar stealth. Moreover, it exhibits excellent thermal
insulation (thermal conductivity of 0.049 W/m·K) and a low infrared
emissivity of 0.666 (8–14 μm), enabling remarkable infrared
camouflage. This work provides a simple and efficient strategy for
developing high-performance radar–infrared-compatible stealth
materials.

Highway bridges are primarily reinforced concrete structures. They have multilayer steel mesh sheets, corrugated pipes, and steel strands inside. As a result, detecting defects in bridge concrete structures requires high technical expertise and can be challenging. This article presents a new device of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) designed specifically for highway bridge inspection. It employs antenna array technology, multichannel radar control technology, and real-time 3-D data acquisition and display technology to achieve reliable detection of various concrete structures commonly found in bridges. Using a 1.3 GHz central frequency antenna array and a multichannel control unit, the system enables simultaneous surveying along five lines, the detection depth can exceed 600 mm in concrete. This significantly enhances detection efficiency. By employing specialized software processing, the detection results are presented in a specific and visually comprehensive 3-D format. Moreover, the system provides 3-D slice images from any position and direction, facilitating the interpretation of detection results for various targets, including reinforcement layout, protective layer thickness, corrugated pipes, steel strands, and other quality defects. It provides advanced and reliable technical means for construction quality control and bridge health monitoring of highway bridges. The results indicate that the device performs well not only in controlled experimental environments, but also in real-world bridge structure environments.

Thanks to recent technological advances, a new generation of low-cost, small, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is available. Small UAVs, often called drones, are enabling unprecedented applications but, at the same time, new threats are arising linked to their possible misuse (e.g., drug smuggling, terrorist attacks, espionage). In this paper, the main challenges related to the problem of drone identification are discussed, which include detection, possible verification, and classification. An overview of the most relevant technologies is provided, which in modern surveillance systems are composed into a network of spatially-distributed sensors to ensure full coverage of the monitored area. More specifically, the main focus is on the frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar sensor, which is a key technology also due to its low cost and capability to work at relatively long distances, as well as strong robustness to illumination and weather conditions. This paper provides a review of the existing literature on the most promising approaches adopted in the different phases of the identification process, i.e., detection of the possible presence of drones, target verification, and classification.

Microwave transmission-infrared stealth compatible materials are critical for radomes and strategic vehicles, but existing solutions fail to balance performance well. MXene shows promise for dual-band applications, yet its continuous films suffer from high radar reflectivity and low transmittance. Herein, MXene-patterned flexible frequency selective surface (FSS) structures were fabricated via screen printing, with systematic control of the parameters of arrays to tailor electromagnetic properties, enabled by tailoring the equivalent inductor-capacitor circuit of the FSS to achieve impedance matching in the radar band. As gap width of arrays increases from 120 to 360 μm, radar transmittance reaches 78% (over 10⁴ higher than that of continuous MXene films) and the reflectivity is significantly reduced from 90% to 16%, while maintaining approximately 80% infrared reflectivity (8∼14 μm, corresponding to an emissivity of 0.2) is retained. This achieves efficient radar-infrared dual-band compatibility, with radar transmittance differing by only approximately 1.01 dB from that of MXene-free structures. The low-cost method provides a feasible pathway for high-performance regulation of dual-band devices, advancing multispectral functional materials and meeting demands in aerospace, stealth protection, and next-gen communications.

Radar absorbing materials (RAMs) for electromagnetic wave attenuation and EMI mitigation are increasingly required to exhibit broadband microwave absorption and low density. However, pure graphite suffers from poor impedance matching, lack of magnetic loss (resulting in weak low-frequency absorption), and excessive thickness requirements, while pure Fe 3 O 4 has limited broadband absorption capability. To address these issues, Fe 3 O 4 /graphite composites with mass ratios ranging from 5:0 to 5:8 were prepared via an in-situ solvothermal method, integrating magnetic loss from Fe 3 O 4 and dielectric loss from graphite to achieve synergistic microwave absorption. XRD, SEM–EDS, VSM, and vector network analyzer measurements were carried out. Results showed that Fe 3 O 4 formed a pure cubic spinel phase, with nanoparticles uniformly dispersed on graphite sheets, creating layered mixed interfaces. As the graphite content increased, saturation magnetization decreased steadily, consistent with the magnetic phase dilution model. The microwave absorption originated from the synergistic effect of Fe 3 O 4 ’s natural resonance (magnetic loss) and graphite’s dielectric loss (via multiple scattering and interface polarization). Among the samples, the 5:4 ratio composite exhibited a minimum reflection loss of –62.48 dB at 4.88 GHz with a thickness of 4.5 mm, attributed to near-optimal impedance matching and a high attenuation constant. The 5:2 ratio composite achieved the widest effective absorption bandwidth of 4.48 GHz (13.28–17.76 GHz) at 1.5 mm thickness. These Fe 3 O 4 /graphite composites demonstrate promising microwave absorption performance with low density, making them strong candidates for lightweight radar-absorbing structures, where broadband effectiveness and mass efficiency are critical design considerations.

Forests are vital components of the ecosystem of the Earth, regulating climate, conserving soil and water, and fostering biodiversity. Sustainable forest management offers crucial long-term benefits, but challenges such as disease threaten tree health. Disease-infected trees in both forests and urban areas pose risks to safety, property, and culture, leading to economic losses. Traditional inspection methods, such as resistance drilling, are invasive and laborious, while nondestructive techniques such as ground penetrating radar (GPR), offer promising alternatives. Although GPR shows potential, complexities such as tree structure and electromagnetic properties hinder accurate disease detection. In order to address these challenges, a new approach integrates structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry with GPR measurement, and a novel holographic radar tomography processing approach has been proposed in this article. These methodologies accurately reconstruct tree trunks in 3-D, enabling precise GPR positioning and the obtaining of trunk permittivity. An arc-shaped Kirchhoff migration algorithm, moreover, helps mitigate irregular trunk shapes, enhancing data accuracy. The proposed framework demonstrates efficacy in real-tree measurement, offering high-precision disease monitoring. This innovation not only aids in preserving biodiversity but also enhances ecosystem services by promoting sustainable forest management. Effective disease monitoring ensures timely intervention, safeguarding valuable old trees and ecosystems while minimizing economic and cultural losses.
