Effects of different phosphorus sources on the adsorption of U(Ⅵ) by Zr(Ⅳ) organophosphate hybrids

Lei Chen,Huan Wang,Xiaohong Cao,Yue Feng,Zhibing Zhang,Youqun Wang,Yunhai Liu

A simple hydrothermal method was adopted to synthesize different inorganic-organic hybrid materials (Zr -x ), including zirconium ethylenediamine tetramethylene phosphine (Zr-EDTMP), 2-phosphobutane-1,2,4-zirconium tricarboxylate (Zr-PBTC), odium creatine phosphate zirconium phosphate (Zr-CP), and creatinol zirconium phosphate (Zr–COP). Various characterizations were utilized to explore the physical and chemical properties of materials. The applications of Zr -x in removing U(Ⅵ) were studied comprehensively. The effects of solution's pH value, contact time, initial concentration of U(Ⅵ), and temperature on adsorption were examined. Besides, the desorption, reusability, as well as adsorptive selectivity were investigated. The present study revealed that the U(Ⅵ) adsorption on Zr-EDTMP was in accordance with Sips isothermal model with the greatest adsorption capacity (317.4 mg/g) and the superior adsorptive selectivity for U(Ⅵ). Zr-EDTMP is a potentially high-efficient adsorbent for extracting U(Ⅵ) from radioactive wastewater .

U(Ⅵ) sorption by porous sodium zirconium phosphate pellets from aqueous solution

Cheng Wang,Bingtao Gui,Tianjie Li,Ruiyang Chang,Junxiang Shu,Xiaoqin Deng,Li Chen,Maodan Luo,Bing Jiang,Su Xu,Juan Zhai,Jun Liu,Changsong Zhao

Zirconium phosphate is the first artificially produced layered phosphate that can sorb a variety of nuclides from solutions. Sodium zirconium phosphate (NZP) was a type of α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP). The porous sodium zirconium phosphate pellets (p-NZP-P) with a diameter of more than ∼3 mm were prepared and used for uranium sorption. The p-NZP-P could be immersed in solutions for more than 5 days without dissolving and structurally collapsing. The sorption properties of U(Ⅵ) on p-NZP-P in solutions were investigated by both static and dynamic sorption tests. Synthetic p-NZP-P was analyzed in detail using various characterizations to investigate their character and structural changes. In the static sorption experiment, the equilibrium sorption capacity reached the 77.5 ± 1.5 mg·g −1 when the initial concentration of U(Ⅵ) was 100 mg/L, pH initial  = 4.5, T  = 25 ℃. Uranium sorption increased by ∼69 % and ∼215 %, respectively, when the initial uranium concentration was increased from 100 to 300 mg·L −1 and the temperature was increased from 15 to 55 °C. Furthermore, uranium sorption increased by ∼541 % when the initial pH increased from 2.5 to 4.5, while it decreased by ∼39 % when the initial pH increased from 4.5 to 7.0. The sorption data corresponded to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, as well as the theoretically predicted value of sorption capacity (∼199.9 mg·g −1 ). The results of the dynamic sorption experiment showed that decreasing the quality, increasing the flow rate and the initial U(Ⅵ) concentration would shorten the breakthrough time. The dynamic sorption data agreed well with the Thomas model. The characterization confirmed the porous properties, while the U(Ⅵ) sorption mechanisms relate to –OH coordination and ion exchange. A radioactive rare earth wastewater treatment test suggested that p-NZP-P could be the potential uranium sorbent due to its good stability and efficiency. This paper opened opportunities for the development of practical materials for treating radioactive wastewater in the application of actual scenarios.

Kinetic and equilibrium of U(Ⅵ) adsorption onto magnetic amidoxime-functionalized chitosan beads

Shuting Zhuang,Rong Cheng,Mi Kang,Jianlong Wang

Uranium is used to make nuclear fuels for power generation . Uranium-containing wastewater is produced from fuel fabrication, fuel reprocessing , which resulted in the soil and water pollution . In this study, a cleaner and environmental friendly adsorption material, chitosan, was used to remove uranium from aqueous solution. Magnetic amidoxime functionalized chitosan beads were synthesized, characterized and applied for adsorption of uranium. The adsorption capacity of 117.65 mg/g was achieved at pH = 6, mainly due to coordination ability of amidoxime groups. With an Ms of 21.7 emu/g, the magnetic adsorbents could be fast separated from aqueous solution by the magnetic field. Additionally, the results showed that the adsorption process could be well described by the pseudo-second order kinetic (R 2  = 0.9842) and Langmuir models (R 2  = 0.9995). Finally, an adsorption mechanism was tentatively proposed to explain the adsorption process.

Synthesis and applications of phase-change recyclable microgels with ultrafast adsorbing performance towards U(Ⅵ)

Peiyan He,Xianshuang Zhu,Danqing Shen,Yue Ma,Xue Bai,Jianming Pan

Rapid treatment of uranium in seawater is an important topic that needs to be addressed urgently. Microgel materials are considered ideal for rapid adsorption due to their ability to absorb water quickly. In a seawater environment, amidoxime materials exhibit superior selectivity for uranium enrichment. However, the modification of amidoxime groups onto microgels must be conducted in organic solvents. These solvents are unable to sufficiently swell and dissolve common microgels, leading to shrinkage that nearly blocks all modification reactions. Here, the thermo-responsive N'N -diethylpropionamide (DEA) was chose as the skeleton monomer to synthesize microgels, which showed both good hydrophilicity and oleophilicity properties The difference between the particle size of synthesized microgels in water and ethanol was not obvious. Due to the integration of microgels and kairamidoxime materials, the AO-Microgels demonstrate a maximum adsorption capacity of 79.29% within just 3 min. Additionally, their selective adsorption capacity for uranium in simulated seawater is remarkable. Furthermore, it simplifies the recycling process because of its intelligent temperature responsiveness.

Carbon dots-mesoporous silica composites for efficient U(Ⅵ) adsorption and in situ fluorescence monitoring

Yanan Ren,Menghan Tang,Ke Li,Yaorui Li

The development of functional materials capable of simultaneous U(Ⅵ) detection and adsorption remains a critical challenge in nuclear waste management. Herein, we present carbon dots (CDs)-functionalized MCM-41 composites (CA@MCM-41 and AA@MCM-41) that synergistically integrate fluorescent sensing and selective adsorption capabilities. Through hydrothermal synthesis of CDs derived from citric acid (CA) and L-aspartic acid (AA), the composites exhibit U(Ⅵ) adsorption selectivity while preserving ordered mesoporosity. The AA@MCM-41 demonstrates higher adsorption capability for U(Ⅵ) under acidic conditions (pH 1–4) leveraging protonated amine-carboxyl synergy. The CA@MCM-41 exhibits better adsorption capacity in pH 5–6. Crucially, the composites exhibit intrinsic fluorescence-U(Ⅵ) adsorption coupling, where uranyl coordination triggers concentration-dependent quenching. The correlation between fluorescence quenching and U(Ⅵ) adsorption is quantitatively analyzed using the Stern-Volmer-type relationship. The excellent linear fits strongly support a static quenching mechanism dominated by the stable complex formation between the anchored CDs and U(Ⅵ). The demonstrated integration of optical feedback positions these composites as transformative solutions for smart nuclear wastewater treatment systems.

Effects of γ-ray irradiation on the stability and U(Ⅵ) adsorption performance of bentonite colloids

Jianfeng Cheng,Ju Wang,Qiao Jiang,Jingli Xie,Shengfei Cao,Qi Zhang,Runqiu Gu

During the long-term deep geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste , buffer materials, such as bentonite , in the waste repositories are irradiated with gamma (γ) rays, affecting their structural stability. Furthermore, bentonite colloids are formed owing to the erosion of bentonite particles by groundwater. However, the effects of prolonged irradiation on the stability of bentonite colloids and their interaction with radionuclides , which can affect the migration of the radionuclides , are yet to be elucidated. Herein, we investigated the stability of colloid prepared from irradiated bentonite with varying doses of γ rays and conducted static adsorption batch experiments to examine their U(VI) adsorption behavior. The results showed that the stability of bentonite colloids was affected by their concentration, storage time, pH, and temperature. An investigation into their polymerization kinetics revealed that the critical coagulation concentration of bentonite colloids decreased with increasing irradiation dose, indicating that the colloids formed from unirradiated bentonite were stable. Furthermore, the U(VI) adsorption capacity of bentonite colloids decreased with increasing irradiation dose. This study provides new insights into the formation and stability of colloids of buffer materials after their irradiation and is expected to contribute significantly to the study of the migration behavior of nuclides by colloidal carriers.

Hydroxyl-based donor-acceptor covalent triazine frameworks as efficient platforms for in-situ photocatalytic U(Ⅵ) reduction

Ruoxuan Guo,Yingzhong Huo,Liping Song,Yang Liu,Tao Wen,Sai Zhang,Yuejie Ai

Developing stable and efficient catalysts for artificial photoreduction of soluble hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) into less mobile complexes is of considerable value to U enrichment and environmental sustainability. However, the pursuit of high-performance U(VI) photoreduction is greatly plagued by inferior charge separation and utilization for semiconductors. Herein, the multipolar donor-acceptor (D-A) interface and hydroxyl groups are rationally integrated into covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) for enhancing U(VI) photoreduction without sacrificial agents. Once incorporating phenolic hydroxyl (Ph-OH) groups as electron donors, the targeted CTF-HUST-OH displays high efficiency (∼100 %) for U(VI) removal with a brilliant enrichment capacity (681.15 mg·g −1 ) under visible light irradiation, superior to most reported metal-free catalysts. Experimental and density functional theory (DFT) results validate that the polarized internal micro-electric field is formed in CTF-HUST-OH with an oriented charge transfer from Ph-OH to triazine units, thus achieving efficient electron separation and utilization. Impressively, the introduced -OH groups promote U(VI) adsorption via increase of pore hydrophilicity, and create reaction sites towards H 2 O 2 production, thereby facilitating in-situ generation of UO 2 O 2 ·4H 2 O(s). This study highlights a new strategy on the molecular-level design of D-A type CTF photocatalysts for efficient uranyl removal and extraction from uranium-bearing aqueous environments.
