In Situ Formation of WC/W2C Heterostructures on N-Doped Carbon for Deep Oxidative Desulfurization of Fuel Oil

Peng Zuo,Fuyan Zhao,Fanfan Liu,Jinpei Hei,Guozheng Lv,Xianzong Huang,Jun Zhang,Meng Zhang,Yefeng Liu,Tao Ma

A novel tungsten-based heterojunction nanocomposite material was developed for the efficient oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of fuel oil, enabling the production of low-sulfur fuel and a reduction in harmful SOxemissions. In this material, the WC/W2C heterojunction was uniformly immobilized on a porous nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) matrix structure through facile in situ pyrolysis of polyaniline–phosphotungstic acid (PANI/PTA) precursors. The resultant WC/W2C@NC catalyst demonstrated remarkable desulfurization performance, achieving 100% removal of 4000 ppm dibenzothiophene (DBT) in just 15 min at 60 °C in the presence of 0.03 g of WC/W2C@NC and a H2O2/S molar ratio of 2. This exceptional activity is attributed to the synergistic effects stemming from the accelerated electron transfer by the NC matrix, the intricate porous network, and the abundant WC/W2C heterojunction active sites. Moreover, the in situ formation of NC around WC/W2C mitigated active site leaching, ensuring remarkable stability, with a DBT removal rate of 97.2% maintained even after eight recycling cycles. This work provides a versatile and scalable approach for fabricating tungsten-based heterojunction catalysts and highlights the potential of WC/W2C@NC as a high-performance, durable ODS catalyst, paving the way for further advancements in sustainable desulfurization technologies.

Boosting electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution over a Mo2C–W2C heterostructure by interface-induced electron modulation

Lijuan Jiang,Ruijing Wang,Huimin Zhou,Guang-Feng Wei,Xuefeng Wang

Carbides have a high d-band electronic density of states at the Fermi level and hence characteristics resembling those of platinum. However, due to the strong adsorption of hydrogen intermediates on the surface of the carbides, the kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is severely limited. Here, we demonstrate a strategy to improve the HER kinetics of carbides by modulating the surface electronic structure. Mo2C–W2C ultrafine nanoparticles on reduced graphene oxide (Mo2C–W2C/RGO) with strong electron interaction are constructed to improve the HER activity. The interfacial interaction between Mo2C and W2C adjusts the electronic structure of the surface, and the favorable hydrogen desorption on this surface is proved by density functional theory calculations. Benefitting from the adjusted electronic structures on the Mo2C–W2C heterointerface, the hydrogen adsorption free energies on both the Mo and W sites of Mo2C–W2C are close to the ideal values (0 eV). As expected, the Mo2C–W2C/RGO exhibits a superior HER activity with ultra-low overpotentials of 81 mV and 87 mV at a current density of −10 mA cm−2 under acidic and alkaline conditions, respectively, as well as remarkable stability. This work reveals the modulating effect of the electronic structure of carbides on the HER activity, which has a profound guiding effect for the directional design of advanced electrocatalysts.

Steering charge kinetics in W2C@C/TiO2 heterojunction architecture: Efficient solar-light-driven hydrogen generation

Xin-Zheng Yue,Chuan-Qi Li,Zhong-Yi Liu,Sha-Sha Yi,De-Liang Chen,Feng Wang,Shuai-Hui Li

The constructing of functional materials with well-defined nanostructure , showing efficient charge separation and transportation properties, has been intensively and in depth investigated to fabricate catalysts for H 2 generation from solar-driven water reduction. Here we demonstrate that loading W 2 C@C structure in which each W 2 C nanoparticle (NP) is wrapped by carbon shell on surface of hollow TiO 2 microspheres (HTMs) can enhance the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs by building an internal electric field in W 2 C@C/HTMs composite structure and act as the reaction active sites for water reduction. As expected, the optimized W 2 C@C/HTMs construction exhibits the highest photocatalytic H 2 generation rate of 6.91 mmol h −1 g −1 under simulated solar light illumination, over 20 times larger than that of bare HTMs. The underlying mechanism has been investigated from the perspective of photochemistry and photophysics based on a series of characterization techniques, which suggests that W 2 C@C can effectively steer the charge kinetics, maximizing the charge carriers’ separation.

Construction of electrochemical sensor of Cu2O-CuO-W3O-W2C composite material for rapid and sensitive detection of vanillic acid

Na Li,Shixu Chen,Cong Zhang,Haiyan Zhao,Min Cui,Bao Sun

Vanillic acid is a phenolic compound which has antioxidant properties and plays an essential role in the prevention of several degenerative diseases, including cancer and atherosclerosis. This work reports the development and application of a electrochemical sensor for vanillic acid detection by a composite material (Cu 2 O-CuO-W 3 O-W 2 C) using polyoxometal-based metal–organic frameworks (POMOFs) as precursor through thermal decomposition. The synthesized Cu 2 O-CuO-W 3 O-W 2 C have high electrical conductivity and excellent electrocatalytic performance. The electrochemical sensor displays a linear response between the current density and concentration of vanillic acid (50–1100 μM) with a lowest detection limit of 1.439 μM under optimal conditions. The sensor was also demonstrated for the determination of vanillic acid in different real samples (fruit juice and fruit peel) and satisfactory results were obtained.

Synergistic effect from Lewis acid and the Ni–W2C/AC catalyst for highly active and selective hydrogenation of aryl nitro to aryl amine

Zhongkui Zhao,Hongling Yang,Yu Li

This work presents a facile approach for clean and chemoselective synthesis of various functionalized arylamines from their corresponding substituted nitroarenes through the unexpected synergistic effect of a Lewis acid and the Ni–W2C/AC catalyst, affording almost 100% arylamine yield. The results challenge the long-held axiom that the combination of Lewis acid and hydrogenation catalyst mainly enhances the transformation of nitrobenzene (NB) to p-aminophenol via Bamberger rearrangement of the formed intermediate phenylhydroxylamine (PHA) under catalytic hydrogenation conditions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and FT-IR spectroscopy were employed to reveal the relationship between catalyst nature and catalytic performance, and a plausible reaction mechanism is also proposed. Reaction results demonstrate that the FeCl3–Ni–W2C/AC catalytic system shows comparable catalytic performance towards precious metals for chemoselective reduction of various aromatic nitro compounds, affording 100% yield for all substrates involved in this work (99.5% of isolated yield for model substrate). Moreover, it can be found that the catalyst could be easily recovered by filtration and recycled without visible loss of its catalytic activity. Therefore, the developed FeCl3–Ni–W2C/AC catalytic system in this work can be considered as a practical candidate for clean and highly-efficient synthesis of diverse functionalized arylamines. We believe this approach can be extended to the other hydrogenation reactions.

Ultrafine cable-like WC/W2C heterojunction nanowires covered by graphitic carbon towards highly efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Lu-Nan Zhang,Yuan-Yuan Ma,Zhong-Ling Lang,Yong-Hui Wang,Shifa Ullah Khan,Gang Yan,Hua-Qiao Tan,Hong-Ying Zang,Yang-guang Li

Developing highly active, durable and economical noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) plays a crucial role in the future hydrogen economy. Herein, ultrafine cable-like WC/W2C heterojunction nanowires (NWs) covered by few-layer N-doped graphite-like carbon (labeled WC/W2C@C NWs) have been firstly accomplished via a simple two-step pyrolysis treatment of W18O49 NWs precursor, exhibiting tunable phase composition, excellent HER activity, fast kinetic metrics and remarkable stability along the entire pH range. With the optimized phase composition, WC/W2C@C NWs (WC : W2C ≈ 1 : 1.3) display the low overpotentials of 69 mV and 56 mV at the cathodic current density of 10 mA cm−2 and small Tafel slopes of 52 and 59 mV dec−1 in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1 M KOH, respectively. DFT calculations and experimental results demonstrate that such prominent performance towards the HER was mainly attributed to abundant interfaces between WC and W2C phases in the cable-like heterojunction nanowires which may exert both the high HER activity of W2C and the excellent electrochemical stability and conductivity of WC. Furthermore, the one-dimensional (1D) nanowire morphology and graphite-like carbon shells also promote the conductivity of the whole electrocatalytic material. This work presents a new route to accomplish the morphology control, composition and electronic regulation so as to boost the HER performance of tungsten-carbide-based electrocatalysts, providing new guidance for exploring efficient noble-metal-free electrocatalysts.

Evaluating and optimizing pretreatment technique for catalytic hydrogenolysis conversion of corn stalk into polyol

Yong Gang Sun,Yulong Ma,Zheng Wang,Junkang Yao

A combinative pretreatment technology of steam explosion (SE) and alkali was applied to enhance hydrogenolysis conversion of corn stalk into polyol with Ni–W 2 C or Fe–Mn–K catalyst. The results showed that treatments corn stalk with 0.4   MPa SE and alkali removed 84.16   wt% of hemicellulose and 71.83   wt% of lignin and thereby increased the cellulose content from 31.54 to 80.41   wt%. But the glucose loss was insignificant during pretreatment. Data from catalytic hydrogenolysis showed that pretreatment corn stalk with 0.4   MPa SE and alkali improved the yield of polyol, and about 20.38   wt% of ethylene glycol and 52.36   wt% of glycerol were produced after catalysis with Ni–W 2 C/(coconut shell activated carbon, CSAC). Based on the yield of polyol, the catalytic performance of Ni–W 2 C/CSAC was significantly better than those of Ni–W 2 C/(coal-based activated carbon) and Fe-Mn-K/(amorphous carbon).

Mild depolymerization of the sinocalamus oldhami alkali lignin to phenolic monomer with base and activated carbon supported nickel-tungsten carbide catalyst composite system

Xiuhua Lin,Lihui Chen,Heyu Li,Yuancai Lv,Yifan Liu,Xuebin Lu,Minghua Liu

In this study, the sinocalamus oldhami alkali lignin was depolymerized into phenolic products in a combined system by using the composite alkali and Ni-W 2 C/activated carbon (AC) as catalysts. FT-IR, GPC, TG, 2D-HSQC and GC–MS were used to analyze the composition, structure and distribution of degradation products, and the synergistic effect of metal and alkali catalysts on the depolymerization of lignin was also studied. The results showed that Ni-W 2 C/AC and composite alkali could effectively improve the catalytic degradation efficiency of lignin under mild conditions, 94.4% of lignin was converted and 17.18% of phenolic monomers were obtained under 260 °C for 5 h. In this composite system, the synergism of the basic sites, the metal active sites and the Lewis acid sites could promote the cleavage of C–O bonds in the lignin molecule and lower the char formation during the base-catalyzed solvolysis. Phenolic monomers were mainly composed of phenol, 2-methyl-phenol and p -cresol etc.

Xiao-Chun Deng,He-Qiang Chang,Guo-Hua Zhang

Tungsten carbides (W 2 C and WC) materials, as promising non-precious electrocatalysts , possess highly efficient activity for HER . Herein, N-doped graphene supported tungsten carbide (N–W 2 C/WC) nanocomposite is synthesized by spray drying process followed with a two-step pyrolysis treatment , which exhibits a remarkable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and excellent stability in acidic solution and alkaline solution. N–W 2 C/WC displays low overpotentials of 166 mV and 125 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and small Tafel slopes of 60.97 and 62.66 mV dec −1 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1.0 M KOH, respectively. After 1000 cycles, the electrocatalytic activity of N–W 2 C/WC is almost no change in acidic media but slightly decreases in alkaline media . This work might provide a new way to explore high comprehensive performance tungsten-based electrocatalyst for HER.

Microwave-pulse sugar-blowing assisted synthesis of 2D transition metal carbides for sustainable hydrogen evolution

Rong Hu,Huiyu Jiang,Jinglin Xian,Shiyun Mi,Liyun Wei,Guangyu Fang,Jiayue Guo,Siqi Xu,Ziyang Liu,Huanyu Jin,Weilin Xu,Jun Wan

Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial to clean fuel production. Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides (TMCs) are promising HER electrocatalysts by their excellent intrinsic catalytic activity. However, the synthesis of 2D TMCs requires prolonged high-temperature conditions or rigorous etching processes. Here we achieved an ultra-fast and facile synthesis of ultra-thin carbon-terminated 2D TMCs via a microwave-pulse sugar-blowing method. A series of 2D TMCs are obtained rapidly within 3 min. This method accurately adjusts carbon-layer thickness and facilitates the formation of 2D structures. Accordingly, the electrocatalytic HER activity and stability of TMCs are significantly improved. The 2D W 2 C with 1 nm carbon-layer thickness shows high HER activity and ultra-long durability (100 h) in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes. Furthermore, this microwave-pulse method is a generic synthesis strategy that is demonstrated by the successful preparation of 2D WC, Mo 2 C and MoC.

Engineering Cu-W2C heterostructures via rapid solid-phase hot-pressing-pyrolysis for efficient hydrogen evolution

Tong Zeng,Hui Cheng,Jingmei Zhang,Shuai Xiong,Enxin Dong,Dongchao He,XiangMin Zhao,Qin Guo

The development of highly efficient catalysts for hydrogen production via water electrolysis is crucial for advancing hydrogen energy applications. This study successfully synthesized a Cu-W 2 C heterostructure supported on carbon nanofibers (Cu-W 2 C /CNFs) using a combined solid-phase hot-pressing and pyrolysis strategy. The prepared Cu-W 2 C/CNFs catalyst exhibits outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction performance, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline pure water and simulated seawater with overpotentials of only 89 and 102 mV, respectively. The catalyst maintains good stability after 100 h of continuous operation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Cu-W 2 C heterostructure effectively optimizes the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption. Strong synergistic interactions at the heterointerface induce significant interfacial charge redistribution, thereby enhancing HER catalytic activity. This study provides guidance for synthesizing non-precious metal/carbon electrocatalysts via solid-phase hot-pressing technology.

Oxidative desulfurization of liquid fuels catalyzed by W2C@C derived from metallophthalocyanine/phosphotungstic acid composites

Fei Wang,Yefeng Liu,Ying Lv,Jun Ren,Ruixin Wang,Weizhou Jiao

Herein, the tungsten carbide (W 2 C) coated with the ultrathin carbon layer (W 2 C@C) was firstly exploited as an efficient and stable oxidative desulfurization (ODS) catalyst, which was prepared via annealing metallophthalocyanine/phosphotungstic acid composites at 800 °C under N 2 atmosphere. The Zn element in precursor markedly promoted the formation of the pure-phase W 2 C during annealing process. W 2 C@C showed a remarkable ODS performance with H 2 O 2 as oxidant under mild conditions. Dibenzothiophene (DBT) was100% removed by W 2 C@C within 40 min at 50 °C. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with the radical scavenging experiments suggest that the ODS over W 2 C@C follows a non-radical mechanism that involves the facile formation of surface active oxygen species. Moreover, the W 2 C@C catalyst could be easily regenerated by solvent washing and recycled with no obvious loss of performance. Therefore, W 2 C could be firstly suggested as a promising catalyst for the ODS of liquid fuels.
