In this work, the binding interaction of an artificial sweetener, acesulfame (ACS) with human serum albumin (HSA) are investigated at the molecular level by using spectral methods and molecular modeling. ACS has the ability to induce static quenching of the intrinsic fluorescence of HSA by a complex formed between HSA and ACS through weak multi-noncovalent forces including hydrophobic, hydrogen bond and van der Waals forces . ACS enters subdomain IIA of HSA to induce the tertiary structure changes of HSA and decreased the hydrophobicity of protein. In addition, ACS binding does not obviously alter the secondary structure of HSA. This study is hoped to provide some crucial information for further investigations of the biosafety of sweetener.

Artificial sweeteners (ASWs), a class of emerging contaminants with good water solubility, have attracted much attention recently because of their wide use and negative impact on the aquatic environment and drinking water. Efficient technologies for removing ASWs are in urgent need. This study investigated degradation of typical ASW acesulfame by ozone-activated peroxymonosulfate process (O3/PMS) in prepared and real waters. O3/PMS can degrade >90% acesulfame in prepared water within 15 min at a low dosage of O3(60 ± 5 µg∙min−1) and PMS (0.4 mM). Ozone, hydroxyl radical (HO•), and sulfate radical (SO4•−) were identified as contributors for ACE degradation and their contribution proportion was 27.1%, 25.4%, and 47.5% respectively. O3/PMS showed the best degradation performance at neutral pH and were sensitive to constituents such as chloride and natural organic matters. The qualitative analysis of degradation products confirmed the involvement of hydroxyl radical and sulfate radical and figured out that the active sites of ACE were the C=C bond, ether bond, and C-N bond. The electrical energy per order ACE degradation were calculated to be 4.6 kWh/m3. Our findings indicate that O3is an efficient PMS activator and O3/PMS is promising due to its characteristic of tunable O3−HO• SO4•−ternary oxidant involving. Keywords:ozone;peroxymonosulfate;acesulfame;advanced oxidation;sulfate radical

Artificial sweeteners, as a type of food additive, have vibration frequencies mostly concentrated in the terahertz (THz) band, which enables us to utilize THz technology to deeply analyze their molecular properties. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the features of artificial sweeteners, this study specifically chose aspartame and acesulfame as representatives. Initially, we employed PXRD and Raman spectroscopy techniques to carry out a thorough examination and verification of the crystalline structure as well as the purity levels of these two synthetic sweeteners. Then, with the aid of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) technology and terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) system, the spectral characteristics of aspartame and acesulfame were precisely measured. Moreover, the crystal configurations of these two artificial sweeteners were simulated using solid-state density functional theory (DFT), and the simulation results were in good agreement with the experimental results, further validating the effectiveness of our research methods. Finally, using microfluidic chip technology, the THz spectral characteristics of aspartame and acesulfame in solution were determined, and were compared with their spectra in solid state. We found that the THz spectra of the two artificial sweeteners in solid and solution states have significant correlations. In addition, the research further elucidated that the THz spectrum of a substance dissolved in a solution exhibits a close correlation with its concentration within that solution. These findings provide new perspectives and value for our in-depth research on artificial sweeteners.

Activated coke (ACO) has proven effective in treating secondary effluent. In this study, fluidized ACO was utilized as particle microelectrode to catalyze peroxydisulfate (PDS) in a three-dimensional (3D) electrochemical oxidation (EO) process, referred to as 3D EO/ACO-PDS process, for the treatment of sweetener acesulfame. The pseudo-first-order constant for the EO/ACO-PDS process was found to be 4.08 times that of the total of EO-PDS and ACO processes, indicating a significant synergy between ACO and EO-PDS process. The optimized operational parameters through response surface methodology were ACO dosage of 1.21 g/L, PDS concentration of 0.734 mM, and initial solution pH 3.19, resulting in 99.9 % ACE removal efficiency experimentally. Coexisting chloride and natural organic matter slightly enhanced ACE degradation while NO 3 − evidently inhibited it. It was found that bulk •OH, interface •OH and SO 4 • − , O 2 − •, 1 O 2 and h + played crucial roles in acesulfame degradation. The introduction of fluidized ACO shifted the oxidation mechanism from being primarily •OH-based in the EO process to a more complex radical and non-radical mechanism in the EO/ACO-PDS process. Our study shows that the 3D EO/ACO-PDS technology offers a promising solution for industrial wastewater treatment applications.

The occurrence of acesulfame (ACE) in two full-scale drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) in Zhejiang Province, China, was investigated. The results showed that ACE was commonly detected in the raw water of the DWTPs at ND–0.125 and ND–0.093 μg/L, respectively. The maximum ACE removal efficiencies in the DWTP with traditional processes were less than 10%, whereas those in the DWTP with advanced ozonation treatment were 36.70–79.59%. Consequently, ACE degradation by ozone and the key influencing factors were examined. Laboratory-scale experiments were performed and revealed that ACE degradation followed a pseudo first-order kinetics pattern under all reaction conditions. The decomposition rate relied heavily on applied ozone dosage rate, pH, reaction temperature, and the presence of water matrix constituents. Higher ozone input, alkaline conditions, and higher temperatures favored ACE removal. Among four anions tested, CO32- exhibited a greater inhibitory effect on ACE decomposition than the other three, namely Cl−, HCO3−, and SO42-, did. Scavenging tests confirmed that direct ozonation accounted for ACE degradation under acidic conditions, whereas the hydroxyl radicals produced by ozone under alkaline conditions gradually promoted ACE degradation with increasing pH. These findings demonstrated that ozonation is a technically viable technology for eliminating ACE from drinking water sources.

Artificial sweeteners (ASs) are ubiquitously detected in the global water system, among which acesulfame (ACE) is an emerging contaminant for its chemical and biological stability and unsatisfying removal by conventional or advanced treatment technologies. Phytoremediation is an effective and sustainable in-situ remediation technology that this study is the first to explore ACE removal by aquatic plants. The emergent plants, Scirpus Validus ( S . validus ), Phyllostachys heteroclada Oliver ( P . heteroclada ) and Acorus tatarinowii ( A . tatarinowii ) showed superior removal capability than eleven floating plants, and demonstrated high phytoremediation efficiencies (PEs) of up to 75 % after 28 d domestication. ACE removal by the three emergent plants increased during domestication, as the PEs after 28 d domestication were 5.6–6.5 times of 7 d domestication. Notably, the half-life of ACE was decreased from 20.0 to 33.1 d to 1.1–3.4 d in the plant-hydroponic system, compared with 481.0–1152.4 d in control water without plants. Moreover, A . tatarinowii demonstrated the highest removal capacity for ACE with 0.37 mg/g fresh biomass weight (FW), higher than S . validus (0.27 mg/g FW) and P . heteroclada (0.20 mg/g FW). It is worth noting that a mass balance analysis demonstrated that plant transpiration and plant uptake account for about 6.72 %–18.54 % and 9.69 %–21.67 % ACE removal, while hydrolysis only accounted for about 4 % and photolysis was negligible. The rest ACE may be used as a carbon source by endophytic bacteria and root microorganisms of plants. In addition, increased temperature, pH, and illumination intensity had a significant effect on phytoremediation. In the selected experimental range, the increase of temperature from 15 °C to 35 °C, illumination intensity from 1500 lx to 6000 lx, and pH from 5 to 9 generally accelerated the PEs of ACE during the domestication process. Though the mechanism still requires further investigation, the results provide scientific and feasible data for removal of ACE from water by diverse plants for the first time, and also revealed insights for in-situ treatment of ACE.

Secondary effluents are regarded as both sources and sinks of emerging contaminants. Adsorption by activated coke (ACO) is successfully being applied in the advanced treatment of secondary effluent from the wastewater treatment plant of China. However, ACO proved ineffective in removing the sweetener acesulfame (ACE). Herein, both mesoporous ACO and microporous activated carbon (AC) were comparatively used for the innovative confinement of Mn oxides within their porous structures by impregnation/calcination to enhance ACE adsorption. The optimal synthesis conditions were determined to be a MnSO 4 ·H 2 O/ACO mass ratio of 1.0% and a calcination temperature of 600°C (Mn-ACO600). Mn-ACO600 exhibited superior ACE adsorption compared to Mn-modified AC. Stable adsorption performance was observed within the neutral pH range, which favors practical applications. The pseudo-second-order model best described the adsorption kinetics, indicating a possible chemisorption mechanism. Both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models could effectively simulate ACE adsorption, with a q max of 299.6 mg/g at 298 K. Thermodynamic analysis indicated a spontaneous and exothermic process (Δ H 0 = −68.51 kJ/mol) with entropy reduction (Δ S 0 = −218.56 J mol −1 ·K −1 ). Both coexisting inorganic anions and natural organic matter had insignificant influences. Furthermore, the recycled Mn-ACO600 retained an acceptable adsorption capability. Three-dimensional fluorescence excitation-emission matrix analysis demonstrated that Mn-ACO600 adsorption effectively removed organic matter from real secondary effluent.

The widespread use of additives introduces emerging contaminants, including acesulfame (ACE) and p-arsanilic acid (p-ASA), into agricultural systems, where their co-occurrence may affect crop development. This study investigated the individual and combined effects of ACE and p-ASA on rice during early growth. Rice seeds were exposed under controlled conditions to ACE (0.5–50 μM) and p-ASA (10 μM), either individually or in combination. Germination was assessed after 4 and 7 d, whereas biomass and physiological and biochemical responses, including α-amylase, β-amylase, soluble protein, superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and malondialdehyde (MDA), were evaluated after 14 d. After 4 d, ACE alone caused small, non-significant reductions in germination, whereas only the highest combined exposure (50 μM ACE + 10 μM p-ASA) significantly reduced germination relative to the control. After 7 d, germination rates ranged from 97.22 ± 3.90% to 99.44 ± 1.36%, with no significant differences among treatments, indicating that the initial co-exposure effect was transient. In contrast, seedling biomass was inhibited by up to 22.05% after 14 d, with inhibition increasing with ACE concentration. ACE alone generally increased enzyme activities and MDA levels while reducing soluble protein content. Co-exposure to p-ASA reduced α-amylase, β-amylase, and POD activities below control levels while increasing SOD activity and MDA accumulation. A higher-than-additive increase in MDA was observed only at the highest combined exposure, indicating enhanced lipid peroxidation, whereas lower ACE concentrations produced additive effects. Overall, ACE and p-ASA had limited and transient effects on germination but impaired seedling growth and altered enzymatic and oxidative-stress responses. These findings demonstrate that the effects of contaminant mixtures are strongly concentration dependent and cannot be inferred solely from the responses to the individual compounds.

Mn oxides are confined within the porous structure of activated coke (ACO) via impregnation followed by calcination treatment. The Mn-ACO sample calcined at 600°C (Mn-ACO600) demonstrated superior performance despite containing only a minute atomic ratio of 0.11% Mn on its surface. This treatment led to a slight increase in the specific surface area and pore volume of ACO, with a significant enhancement in the proportion of micropores, rising from 54.2% in ACO to 71.8% in Mn-ACO600. Raman spectroscopy indicated additional defects in Mn-ACO, while XPS analysis confirmed the coexistence of Mn(II), Mn(III), and Mn(IV) oxides. Although ACO adsorption alone was ineffective in removing acesulfame (ACE), Mn-ACO600 achieved a removal rate of 19.0%. The introduction of peroxydisulfate (PDS) further boosted the degradation of Mn-ACO600, with a K app value that was 2.28 times of that of the combined Mn-ACO600 adsorption and PDS oxidation process, indicating a remarkable synergistic effect. To optimize the experimental conditions, a response surface methodology design analysis was conducted, revealing that solution pH and the dosage of Mn-ACO600 were crucial factors. Furthermore, the study confirmed non-radical oxidizing species, such as 1 O 2 and h + , played a predominant role in the process, with relatively minor contributions from radical oxidizing species.

Acesulfame potassium (ACE), an artificial sweetener, is extensively used worldwide and is ubiquitous in aquatic environments in several countries. As an emerging contaminant, ACE may pose a risk to aquatic and water-dependent plant species. This study investigated the physiological and biochemical responses of rice ( Oryza sativa L.) to constant ACE exposure during its key growth stages. The results revealed that ACE exposure had no significant inhibitory effect on the final seed germination rate but significantly impeded early seedling growth, particularly radicle elongation. Biochemical analyses indicated that ACE induced oxidative stress, as evidenced by the altered activities of key antioxidant enzymes and a marked, dose- and time-dependent increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) content, which indicates lipid peroxidation. Specifically, low concentrations of ACE (2.5 μM) enhanced chlorophyll a ( Chla ) synthesis in leaves during specific growth stages, whereas higher concentrations (50 and 100 μM) ultimately inhibited it, leading to the disruption of the photosynthetic apparatus. Furthermore, rice exhibited a significant capacity for ACE uptake and translocation, with accumulation in the following order: roots > stems > leaves. Uptake efficiency increased with plant development and peaked during the booting stage of plant growth. Crucially, sustained exposure led to a progressive decline in soluble protein content, particularly during later growth stages. Collectively, these novel findings demonstrate that ACE imposes substantial physiological stress on rice, primarily through the induction of oxidative damage, disruption of key metabolic pathways, and previously uncharacterized pollutant bioaccumulation and translocation, highlighting the potential risk to rice productivity and underscoring the urgent need for field validation studies.
