Fumigant Activity of Sweet Orange Essential Oil Fractions Against Red Imported Fire Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Hu Wei,Zhang Ning,Chen Hongli,Zhong Balian,Yang Aixue,Kuang Fan,Ouyang Zhigang,Chun Jiong

Sweet orange oil fractions were prepared by molecular distillation of cold-pressed orange oil from sample A (Citrus sinensis (L.) ‘Hamlin’ from America) and sample B (Citrus sinensis Osbeck ‘Newhall’ from China) respectively, and their fumigant activities against medium workers of red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta Buren) were investigated. The volatile composition of the orange oil fractions was identified and quantified using GC–MS. Fractions from sample A (A1, A2, and A3) contained 23, 37, and 48 chemical constituents, and fractions from sample B (B1, B2, and B3) contained 18, 29, and 26 chemical constituents, respectively. Monoterpenes were the most abundant components, accounting for 73.56% to 94.86% of total orange oil fractions, among which D-limonene (65.28–80.18%), β-pinene (1.71–5.58%), 3-carene (0.41–4.01%), β-phellandrene (0.58–2.10%), and linalool (0.31–2.20%) were major constituents. Fumigant bioassay indicated that all orange oil fractions exerted good fumigant toxicity against workers of fire ants at 3, 5, 10, and 20 mg/centrifuge tubes, and B1 had the strongest insecticidal potential, followed by A1, B2, A2, B3, and A3. The fractions composed of more high volatile molecules (A1 and B1) showed greater fumigant effects than others. Compounds linalool and D-limonene, which were the constituents of the orange oil, exhibited excellent fumigant toxicity against red imported fire ant workers. Linalool killed red imported fire ant workers completely at 5, 10, and 20 mg/tube after 8 h of treatment, and D-limonene induced >86% mortality at 8 h of exposure.

Using essential oils from Citrus paradisi as a fumigant for Solenopsis invicta workers and evaluating the oils’ effect on worker behavior

Zhang Ning,Liao Yihong,Xie Lianjie,Zhang Zhixiang,Hu Wei

The red imported fire ant is one of the world’s most devastating invasive species, adversely affecting humans, wildlife, crops, and livestock. To control infestations, chemical pesticides are deployed extensively around the world. However, their extensive use has led to negative effects on the environment and human health. Essential oils, which are safe and ecofriendly, can potentially be used as alternatives to chemical pesticides. In this study, grapefruit essential oils were used as fumigant agents to control red imported fire ants. The crude grapefruit oil (GO1) contained 28 compounds, and the concentrated grapefruit oil (GO2), which was refined from GO1 by vacuum distillation, contained 20 compounds. D-Limonene was the dominant constituent in both GO1 (70.1%) and GO2 (73.96%), and other important constituents included β-pinene, α-pinene, β-phellandrene, octanal, d-carvone, α-terpineol, and linalool. Both the essential oils and their individual constituents (α-pinene, α-terpineol, β-phellandrene, octanal, and d-carvone) showed strong lethal fumigant effects against workers. Workers were more susceptible to GO2 than GO1, and octanal was more toxic to workers as compared with the other four constituents. When antennas of workers were treated with the two oils or the five constituents, their walking and gripping abilities were significantly suppressed, and there was an obvious bending or breaking phenomenon on the sensilla of the antennas. Fumigant activity by grapefruit essential oils and their main compounds were associated with their effects on the walking and gripping behavior of workers, and this confirmed that grapefruit essential oil is a promising, ecofriendly, and safe fumigant for the control of red imported fire ants.

Role in Preventing Alcoholic Liver Disease Progression: A Comparative Study of Whole-Component Finger Citron Essential Oil and Its Major Component D-Limonene

Jingxin Chen,Genghua Ou,Wenting Gu,Jian Shi,Ruiying Lyu,Xueping Wu,Junming Wang,Chunhong Liu

Background/Objectives: Chronic alcohol overconsumption triggers alcohol liver injury, and therapeutic strategies targeting alcohol-triggered oxidative stress and hepatic inflammatory responses represent potential approaches to ameliorating alcohol-related hepatotoxicity. This study aimed to determine the hepatoprotective activity of finger citron essential oil (FCEO) in alcoholic liver disease (ALD)-afflicted rats and explore its underlying mechanisms. In order to identify the effective components, we compared the effects of FCEO and D-limonene.Methods: The regulatory effects of FCEO on metabolic enzymes were systematically evaluated through in vitro experiments. In vivo studies were conducted to investigate and compare the hepatoprotective effects of FCEO and D-limonene. Staining methods, assay kits, and Western Blot were used to determine the roles of FCEO and D-limonene in the ALD rats. Results: We found that FCEO downregulated phase I metabolic enzymes and upregulated phase II metabolic enzymes in Buffalo Rat Liver-3A (BRL-3A) cells. FCEO and/or D-limonene intervention reduced transaminase levels in ALD rats and effectively alleviated inflammatory cell infiltration and lipid droplet accumulation in their liver tissue. Additionally, FCEO and D-limonene played a regulatory role in oxidative stress and inflammation-related pathways such as the MAPK/Nrf2 and NF-κB/AMPK pathways. FCEO was superior to D-limonene as an antioxidant in alleviating alcoholic liver injury. Conclusions: This study revealed the alleviative effects and mechanisms of FCEO on alcoholic liver injury, demonstrating better efficacy compared to its monomer, thus providing a strategy for the development and utilization of finger citron resources.

Formation and Stability of d-Limonene Organogel-Based Nanoemulsion Prepared by a High-Pressure Homogenizer

Mohamed Reda Zahi,Pingyu Wan,Hao Liang,Qipeng Yuan

d-Limonene organogel-based nanoemulsion was prepared by high-pressure homogenization technology. The organogelator type had a major role on the formation of the formulations, in which stearic acid has given nanoemulsions with the smallest droplet size. The surfactant type and concentration also had an appreciable effect on droplet formation, with Tween 80 giving a mean droplet diameter (d ≈ 112 nm) among a range of non-ionic surfactants (Tween 20, 40, 60, 80, and 85). In addition, high-pressure homogenization conditions played a key role in the nanoemulsion preparation. The stability of d-limonene organogel-based nanoemulsion was also investigated under two different temperatures (4 and 28 °C) through 2 weeks of storage. Results showed a good stability of the formulations, which is maybe due to the incorporation of d-limonene into the organogel prior to homogenization. This study may have a valuable contribution for the design and use of organogel-based nanoemulsion as a delivery system in food.

Improving the antimicrobial activity of d-limonene using a novel organogel-based nanoemulsion

Mohamed Reda Zahi,Hao Liang,Qipeng Yuan

The purpose of this research was to develop a novel antimicrobial delivery system by encapsulating d -limonene into an organogel-based nanoemulsion and investigating its antimicrobial activity. The d -limonene organogel-based nanoemulsion was prepared by high pressure homogenization method. The surfactant concentration had a major impact on the droplets' formation and distribution. At the optimal condition (10% w/w Tween 80, 100 Mpa, and 10 Cycles) the smallest droplet size ( d  ≈ 36 nm) could be obtained, which has shown a narrow structure and good stability. Results from the antimicrobial activity have shown the encapsulation of d -limonene (4% w/w) into the organogel-based nanoemulsion contributed to the increase of its antimicrobial activity. In addition, the mechanism of d -limonene organogel-based nanoemulsion against the tested microorganisms was studied by the electronic microscope observation and the cell constituent release. This research would have an important implication for the design of more efficient antimicrobial systems for food preservation and production.

High hydrostatic pressure (HHP) reinforces solid encapsulation of d-limonene into V-type starch and its application in strawberry storage

Yanan Sun,Xiangze Jia,Chin Ping Tan,Bin Zhang,Xiong Fu,Qiang Huang

The formation of inclusion complexes (ICs) between V-type starch and flavors is traditionally conducted in an aqueous system. In this study, limonene was solid encapsulated into V6-starch under ambient pressure (AP) and high hydrostatic pressure (HHP). The maximum loading capacity reached 639.0 mg/g after HHP treatment, and the highest encapsulation efficiency was 79.9 %. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) results showed that the ordered structure of V6-starch was ameliorated with limonene, which avoided the reduction of the space between adjacent helices within V6-starch generated by HHP treatment. Notably, HHP treatment may force molecular permeation of limonene from amorphous regions into inter-crystalline amorphous regions and crystalline regions as the Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) patterns indicated, leading to better controlled-release behavior. Thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) revealed that the solid encapsulation of V-type starch improved the thermal stability of limonene. Further, the release kinetics study showed that a complex prepared with a mass ratio of 2:1 under HHP treatment sustainably released limonene over 96 h and exhibited a preferable antimicrobial effect, which could extend the shelf life of strawberries.

Bei Gao,Yulong Chen,Mingwei Zhang,Yujuan Xu,Siyi Pan

The chemical composition, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity ofPericarpium Citri Reticulatae(PCR) essential oil obtained using an improved Clevenger type apparatus were studied. Among the five differentPCRs examined the highest yield of essential oil was found in Chachi 2004 (harvested and stored in 2004) and the lowest in Chachi 2008 (harvested and stored in 2008). Fifty three different volatile compounds were determined, including terpenic hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones and esters. D-limonene, one of terpenes, was the major constituent inPCR. The antioxidant capacity ofPCRessential oil varied considerably with the duration of storage time, and the oil from Chachi 1994 has the strongest ferric-reducing antioxidant power. In addition, the essential oil possessed varying degrees of antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus,Bacillus subtilis,Bacillus cereus), exceptStreptococcus faecalis, while had no effect on Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli,Enterobacter cloacae). Keywords:Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae;Chachi;chemical composition;antioxidant activity;antimicrobial activity

D-Limonene Is the Active Olfactory Attractant in Orange Juice for Bactrocera dorsalis (Insecta: Diptera: Tephritidae)

Leyuan Liu,Lang Yang,Jinxi Yuan,Jie Zhang,Chenhao Liu,Hongxu Zhou,Wei Liu,Guirong Wang

The oriental fruit fly,Bactrocera dorsalis(Hendel), poses a significant threat to the global fruit industry, causing damage to diverse fruits like citrus, mango, and guava. Chemical pesticides have limited effectiveness, and pesticide residues and pesticide resistance are pressing issues. Therefore, it is essential to develop environmentally friendly pest control methods to address this problem. Behavior-modifying chemicals, including male attractants and intersex protein baits, play a critical role in the control ofB. dorsalis. The mature host fruit serves as both an oviposition site and food source under natural conditions, making it a potential attraction source for oriental fruit flies. Orange,Citrus sinensis, is a main host ofB. dorsalis, and commercial orange juice is a common attractant for the egg laying ofB. dorsalis. Although it can both attract and elicit oviposition behaviors inB. dorsalisadults, its active components are still unclear. This study utilized analytical chemistry, behavioral tests, and electrophysiology to identify the active components of commercial orange juice that attractB. dorsalis, with the aim of providing a reference for the development of behavior-modifying chemical-based techniques to controlB. dorsalis.Five compounds with a high abundance were identified via a GC-MS, including D-Limonene, butanoic acid ethyl ester, β-myrcene, linalool, and α-terpineol. Behavioral and electrophysiological experiments uncovered that D-Limonene was the active substance that was the main attractant in the mixture of these five substances, evoking a strong electrophysiological response in adultB. dorsalis. D-Limonene strongly attracts adultB. dorsalisonly when they are sexually mature, and the attraction is not rhythmic. Olfaction plays a leading role in the attraction of D-Limonene to adultB. dorsalis, andOrco−/−mediates the perception of D-Limonene byB. dorsalis. Overall, D-Limonene is one of the key attractant compounds forB. dorsalisin the volatile compounds of commercial orange juice, offering possible support for the development of behavior-modifying chemical-based technology to controlB. dorsalisin the future.

Kinetic study of d-limonene release from finger citron essential oil loaded nanoemulsions during simulated digestion in vitro

Ze-hua Li,Ming Cai,Kai Yang,Pei-long Sun

Nanoemulsion loading finger citron essential oil (FCEO) can maintain bioactivities of FCEO and increase its water solubility. In this study, stability of FCEO nanoemulsions during digestion in vitro were evaluated and the release kinetics of d-limonene (the main component in the oil) were developed. Compared with free oil released to maximum for 6 min, all nanoemulsions kept sustainably releasing for 300 min or longer. Droplet size of the nanoemulsions increased from 10–18 nm of initial to 105–1106 nm after digestion, indicating coalescence or aggregation occurred. Zero-order, Hixcon-Crowell, Higuchi, Ritger-Peppas and Niebergull models were used to describe the release kinetics. The results showed zero-order and Ritger-Peppas models were the best fit models at mouth and intestinal stage, respectively. Both zero-order and Higuchi models were appropriate at gastric stage. This study could demonstrate the digestion mechanisms of FCEO loaded nanoemulsion and facilitate the design of hydrophobic nutraceuticals delivery systems in food industry.

Cellulose stabilized palm oil emulsions as 3D printing inks: Controlled release of d-limonene

Yanping Liu,Ying Zou,Hong Hu,Hongxia Gao,Yuan Yuan,Mianhong Chen,Ruyi Li,Yaping Dai,Xiaobing Huang,Chenghui Zhang,Jihua Li,Wei Zhou

Natural essential oils, such as d -limonene, are frequently used as flavoring agents and fragrances in the food industry. However, their susceptibility to volatilization and chemical degradation poses challenges for widespread application. In this study, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were used to stabilize palm oils (POs) with different melting points to prepare Pickering emulsions (PEs) for the encapsulation of d -limonene. The physicochemical properties, environmental stability, 3D printing performance, and retention of d -limonene were explored. It results indicated that CNFs stabilized PO emulsions exhibit a stronger gel network structure, particularly pronounced in high melting point PO. CNF-stabilized emulsions enhanced stability to pH changes, salt ion, and storage conditions, due to a greater gel structure. Notably, it should be noted that CNCs and CNFs slowed down the release of d -limonene in both fresh and heat-treated emulsions. Furthermore, CNCs and CNFs emulsions as 3D printing inks, ensure accurate and stable formation of target shapes. The volatilization of d -limonene during the process was effectively suppressed (<9 %). The lower release of d -limonene in CNF emulsions (<2.8 %) could be linked to the tight distribution of CNF particles between the oil/water interface and the droplets, which makes the emulsion more resistant to extrusion. This study provides valuable insights into the use of PEs for encapsulating flavor components in 3D printing applications.

Pore size effect of zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks for encapsulation and release of volatile monoterpenes

Yuhang Liu,Yuanjiang Zhao,Zhuxian Zhou,Youqing Shen,Liming Jiang

In this work the sorption properties of three isoreticular Zr-based MOFs , viz., UiO-66, UiO-67, and UiO-68 as adsorbents of active organics were examined and especially the pore size effects are discussed using d -limonene, myrcene, α-terpinene, and α-pinene as probe molecules. Results indicated that the terpene uptake and release are highly dependent on both the MOF pore size and the geometric feature of guest molecules themselves. The shape selective property of UiO-66 holds for the tested terpenes, where the adsorption capacity of d -limonene, myrcene, and α-terpinene in equilibrium with the liquid phase (0.43–0.46 g g −1 ) was approximately 5-times larger than that of α-pinene with 0.56 nm kinetic diameter (0.09 g g −1 ). The narrow triangular apertures of UiO-66 act as the permeation-limiting barrier for guest molecules with the dimension close to the pore size. Except for α-pinene, the loading fraction for other terpenes decreased with an increase in the MOF pore diameter. For example, the uptake of UiO-66, UiO-67, and UiO-68 for myrcene reached up to 90 %, 81 %, and 76 % of their theoretical maximum loading, respectively. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed that the melting point of both d -limonene and α-terpinene confined in the 0.71 nm pores of UiO-67 shifts to a higher temperature relative to that in the bulk phase. In contrast, no obvious phase transition was observed for the terpene composites with either UiO-66 or UiO-68 (0.94 nm pore size) under identical conditions. Consistent with the thermal analysis results, the monoterpenes entrapped in the UiO-67 showed a much lower release rate than their counterparts in the other two frameworks.

Molecularly imprinted polymers-based piezoelectric coupling sensor for the rapid and nondestructive detection of infested citrus

Tao Wen,Qiyi Nie,Longbo Han,Zhongliang Gong,Dapeng Li,Qiang Ma,Zhiyu Wang,Weitao He,Liang Wen,Hailong Peng

D- limonene is the main volatile gas in citrus, and its content changes significantly after the citrus becomes infected, thus making it possible to use gas-derived information to identify pest-infested citrus. In this study, a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor based on a molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) coating was used to identify the citrus infested with Bactrocera dorsalis . The experimental results show that within the concentration range of 300–2100 mg m −3 , the sensor’s response to the concentration follows a linear trend, and its sensitivity was 0.078 Hz (mg m −3 ) −1 ; the detection limit was 41.40 mg m −3 . The sensor’s reproducibility and repeatability were both higher than 95%, and the one-month frequency drop deviation was less than 5%. The results confirmed that the MIPs-QCM sensor can rapid detection and nondestructive of infested citrus.
