Liquid-phase sintering (LPS) is an effective pathway to assist the densification of ceramics. However, it has seldom been used to densify glass–ceramics. In the present study, a multielement co-doping strategy has been utilized to achieve LPS of a ZrO 2 –SiO 2 nanocrystalline glass–ceramic. Compared with undoped samples densified by solid-state sintering, doping of equimolar Al, Y, and Ca promoted the densification of the glass–ceramic at lower temperatures with a faster densification rate. Ternary doping enhanced coarsening of ZrO 2 nanocrystallites during sintering and annealing. The distribution of dopants was carefully observed with X-ray energy-dispersive spectrometry technique in scanning electron transmission microscopy mode. Results showed that the three dopants showed different distribution behaviors. After sintering, Y dopants were predominately distributed in ZrO 2 nanocrystallites, whereas parts of Al and Ca dopants were distributed in ZrO 2 nanocrystallites and part of them co-segregated at the ZrO 2 /SiO 2 heterointerfaces. Meanwhile, the segregation of Ca dopant at some intergranular films among ZrO 2 nanocrystallites was observed. Redistribution of dopants did not occur during annealing.

Yttrium hydride (YH x ) has attracted significant research attention in fields such as solid-state moderators for advanced nuclear energy systems, owing to its superior hydrogen storage density. However, traditional preparation processes struggle to overcome the intrinsic contradiction between the requirement for high densification and severe high-temperature dehydrogenation. Therefore, this study prepared YH x monoliths using a hot-pressing sintering process and systematically investigated the densification mechanism and micro-defect evolution under a strong thermo-mechanical coupling field. The results indicate that 750∼775 °C is the optimal sintering temperature window for balancing optimal processing window balancing near-full densification with controlled hydrogen retention. Its densification mechanism is fundamentally governed by the evolution of deformation-stored energy. In the initial stage of hot-pressing consolidation, the mechanical compaction dominated by external axial stress injects a high density of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) and deformation stored energy into the matrix. As the temperature rises, ample thermal energy effectively activates the dynamic recovery and recrystallization processes of the matrix, releasing the lattice distortion energy through significant structural relaxation and large-scale dislocation annihilation. These findings provide an important reference for fabricating high-performance YH x components for advanced nuclear applications.

Herein, we report the densification behavior of a typical electric ceramic, barium titanate (BaTiO 3 ), and highlight the role of oxygen vacancies in rapid densification of BaTiO 3 during flash sintering. The activation energies of flash- and conventional-densification processes are compared to reveal that the initiation of flash sintering is triggered by the accumulation of generated oxygen vacancies under the electric field. Furthermore, the densification kinetics of BaTiO 3 and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of flash-sintered BaTiO 3 infer that the ultrafast densification during the flash-sintering stage is dominated by the migration of electric field-generated defects coupled with defect-annihilation by take-in oxygen from the environment.

SrZn 0.8 Mg 0.2 Si 3 O 8 ceramics capable of rapid densification under atmospheric pressure, while maintaining excellent microwave dielectric properties were investigated. In-situ scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy confirm the formation of a liquid phase during sintering and clarify its chemical composition. Rapid densification originates from intrinsic generation of this liquid phase in SrZn 0.8 Mg 0.2 Si 3 O 8 during the sintering process. Because the liquid phase is produced internally, most of it spontaneously crystallizes into the parent phase during cooling. Therefore, the final microstructure consists predominantly of the SrZn 0.8 Mg 0.2 Si 3 O 8 phase with only a small residual amorphous phase. SrZn 0.8 Mg 0.2 Si 3 O 8 ceramics thus exhibit excellent microwave dielectric properties ( ε r = 6.07 ± 0.02, Q×f = 69,350 ± 650 GHz ( f = 16.37 GHz), τ f = −27.6 ± 1.4×10 –6 °C –1 , holding time( H.T. ) = 1 min), which are superior to those of conventional composite ceramics that rely on added low-melting-point oxides to induce liquid-phase sintering. In addition, rapid densification enables grain refinement while maintaining high relative density. This microstructural feature improves mechanical strength and electrical breakdown strength and suppresses long range ionic diffusion during heterogeneous cofiring integration.

Compared with homogeneous glasses, glass-ceramics with heterogeneous microstructures enable multiscale architecture control to optimize their performance. In this work, we attempt to regulate the mechanical properties of ZrO 2 –SiO 2 glass-ceramics through hot compression-induced densification. The refractory glass-ceramic is first synthesized through aerodynamic levitation (containerless) melting, with the inherent immiscibility between zirconia and silica yielding a heterogeneous microstructure upon quenching, comprising a continuous silica-rich glass matrix embedded with discrete ZrO 2 crystalline phases. Upon subsequent hot compression, the overall microstructure is largely retained, but hardness displays a non-monotonic dependence on pressure, that is, decreasing at an intermediate pressure (1 GPa) and increasing at a higher pressure (2 GPa). This behavior contrasts with the monotonic hardness increase typically observed in pressure-treated oxide glasses. We attribute this distinct hardness–densification relationship to pressure-dependent interfacial binding between the glass and crystalline phases. This involves a volume contraction of the ZrO 2 phase due to the monoclinic-to-tetragonal phase transition and densification of the glass matrix phase, collectively determining the interfacial binding strength and thus hardness. Overall, this work demonstrates an alternative approach for tailoring the mechanical properties of glass-ceramics beyond conventional approaches that focus on modifying crystal phase morphology, size, or composition.

High-pressure sintering (HPS) is a promising technique for producing nanocrystalline ceramics with unique properties. However, the densification mechanisms of HPS for nanocrystalline ceramics at different sintering stages remain controversial. This study focuses on Gd 2 Zr 2 O 7 (GZO) nanocrystalline ceramics, investigating their microstructure evolution and densification behavior under varying pressures, temperatures, and dwelling times. The HPS process involves distinct stages: cold compaction, hot compaction, and isothermal progression. During cold compaction, densification is driven by the breakdown of aggregates, particle rearrangement, and local plastic deformation , resulting in a relative density of 84.8 %. The intermediate stage achieves an increase to ∼93.7 % in relative density by grain boundary-mediated plastic deformation mechanism . The final isothermal stage, held at 500 °C/5 GPa, achieves nearly full density (∼99.2 %) through diffusion creep , eliminating microstructural defects. This comprehensive understanding of HPS densification mechanisms, exemplified by GZO ceramics, contributes to advancing nanocrystalline ceramic applications .

Tissue densification, as a hallmark of development, injury, and fibrosis, alters the mechanical and structural properties of the extracellular matrix (ECM). However, its specific effects on neural cell behavior remain poorly understood. To address this, we developed a 3D in vitro microtissue model composed of collagen and Matrigel, incorporating co-cultures of N2A neuroblastoma and 3T3 fibroblast cells. By modulating fibroblast-driven contraction through scaffold-guided constraint, we generated microtissues with distinct levels of densification with Young's moduli ranging from approximately 0.5 to 1 kPa. Our results demonstrated that increased microtissue densification significantly enhanced N2A migration and aggregate formation, indicating that mechanical compaction facilitates neuronal clustering. Furthermore, higher densification promoted N2A cell proliferation, while apoptosis remained at relatively low baseline levels, suggesting that dense environments support cell expansion without affecting overall viability. Additionally, higher densification suppressed the proportion of neurite-bearing cells without affecting neurite length, implying impaired initiation of neuronal differentiation but not morphological maturation. Together, these findings reveal that ECM densification serves as a critical mechanical cue shaping multiple aspects of neural cell behavior. Compared to conventional hydrogel systems, our collagen-based microtissue model provides a more physiologically relevant in vitro platform for studying neurodevelopmental mechanobiology and guiding biomaterial design for neural tissue engineering.

Gd 2 Zr 2 O 7 nanoceramics were fabricated using pressureless sintering method, in which the nanopowders were synthesized via solvothermal approach. The effects of starting powders on grain growth and densification during sintering of ceramics were revealed. Two distinct pressureless sintering methods were investigated, including conventional and two-step sintering. The sample grain size increases abruptly as sintering temperature increases during conventional sintering. In contrast, in two-step sintering, abnormal or discontinuous grain growth was suppressed in the second step, leading to Gd 2 Zr 2 O 7 nanoceramics formation (average grain size 83 nm, relative density ∼93%). Such distinct behaviors may originate from the interplay between kinetic factors such as grain boundary migration and diffusion. Moreover, suppression of grain growth and promotion of densification in the two-step sintering are mainly due to dominant role of grain boundary diffusion during the second-step sintering process.

Titanium hydride (TiH 2 ) ceramics have become key high-performance hydrogen storage materials . However, the sintering of TiH 2 faces significant challenges due to the low temperature of dehydrogenation reaction (300–800 °C). In this study, high-pressure spark plasma sintering (HPSPS) technique was employed to successfully realize low-temperature high-density preparation by suppressing dehydrogenation and regulating densification kinetics under a high pressure (200 MPa). Under the optimized conditions (750 °C, 200 MPa, and 10 min), a fully dense single face-centered cubic (FCC) δ-Ti(H) phase bulk material was fabricated. The initial dehydrogenation temperature of samples fabricated by high-pressure spark plasma sintering (HPSPS) was higher than the dehydrogenation temperature of powder. Mechanistic analyses showed that high pressure inhibited hydrogen escape by compressing pores while promoting particle plastic flow and interfacial bonding. Increasing holding time from 5 to 10 min enhanced diffusion-dominated densification but exacerbated dehydrogenation-induced porosity under low-pressure conditions. The study shows that high pressure compaction can alleviate the contradiction between traditional high temperature densification and low temperature decomposition of TiH 2 , and offers a new strategy for the efficient densification of materials for low temperature decomposition.

Al 2 O 3 –B 4 C ceramics had poor densification, due to the formation of Al 18 B 4 O 33 phase by reaction between Al 2 O 3 and B 2 O 3 on the surface of B 4 C. In the present work, Y 2 O 3 or Ti additive together with ZrO 2 from milling media were introduced into Al 2 O 3 –B 4 C ceramics. Results showed that Y 2 O 3 reacted with B 2 O 3 to produce YBO 3 phase, and removed Al 18 B 4 O 33 phase, resulting in the improved densification and the coarse microstructure. However, Ti and ZrO 2 reacted with B 2 O 3 to produce hard TiB 2 and ZrB 2 phases, removed the most of Al 18 B 4 O 33 phase, refined microstructure by pinning effect of hard particles, and improved densification and mechanical properties .

Solvent-triggered dissolution–gelation enables adhesive-free lignocellulosic bonding. • Multiscale densification achieved via localized cellulose–lignin reconfiguration. • Densified biocomposites exhibit tensile strength surpassing metal alloys. • Versatile and scalable route for sustainable, high-performance biomass-based material Lignocellulosic biomass is an abundant and sustainable resource for structural materials; however, achieving high mechanical performance without chemical treatments or synthetic adhesives remains a significant challenge. In this study, we present a solvent-triggered dissolution–gelation strategy that enables the in situ bonding of lignocellulosic strips into adhesive-free, structurally integrated biocomposites with hierarchical densification. This method induces the localized dissolution and gelation of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin under mild solvent conditions, promoting the reconfiguration of hydrogen bonding networks and transformation of crystalline structures, while simultaneously filling micro- and nanoscale voids. This results in multiscale structural densification from the molecular to the micro- and macro-scales. The resulting densified biocomposites exhibit a specific tensile strength of 823.0 MPa·cm 3 ·g −1 , significantly higher than that of conventional alloys and surpassing values reported for similar materials. In addition, the shear adhesion strength reaches approximately 20 MPa, greatly outperforming conventional adhesive-bonded laminates. Importantly, this strategy preserves the natural lignocellulosic composition, eliminating the need for selective component removal and thus minimizing chemical waste and environmental impact. Moreover, the approach shows potential versatility across several representative lignocellulosic feedstocks, including bamboo, sugarcane bagasse, pulpboard, red oak, and pine, and can be implemented under ambient conditions. This method provides a scalable, environmentally sustainable pathway for producing high-strength, lightweight materials from natural biomass, offering a promising alternative to petroleum-based composites in sustainable materials engineering.
