Direct conversion of cellulose into levulinic acid and furfural in sulfolane media with the aid of water and H 2 SO 4 was performed at 140–220 °C under the pressures of 0–1.5 MPa. This approach could obtain 72.5 mol% levulinic acid and 11.5 mol% furfural formation under an optimal condition in which the mass ratio of sulfolane, water and H 2 SO 4 was 90:10:1. It was found that the decrease of water content led to an increasing yield of furfural and that the maximum furfural yield (51.1 mol%) could be obtained in the absence of water. The synergism of sulfolane and water in the selective liquefied system was demonstrated to be responsible for not only reinforced effect of optimizing and isolating the target products but also for reducing re-polymerization and side reactions. Furthermore, sulfolane in our case could be recycled and re-used for the conversion of cellulose with the same yield, which shed light on the remarkable potential for future industrial application.

Generally, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is used as feedstock to produce 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). Whereas, its poor stability in alkaline environment results in low yield of FDCA. By contrast, 5-[(formyloxy)methyl]furfural (FMF), a novel platform compound derived from HMF, with higher thermal and alkaline stability than HMF, is more promising to replace HMF as substrate for the production of FDCA. In this study, FMF was successfully converted into FDCA over MoCuO x by using NaClO as oxidant, undergoing 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) and 5-hydroxymethylfuran-2-carboxylic acid (HMFCA) as intermediates. Under optimization condition (30 min, 40 °C), 100% yield of FDCA was obtained. Furthermore, it was also demonstrated that the yield of FDCA up to 90% was gained in 5 wt % FMF concentration. Higher oxygen species mobility and lattice oxygen ratio endowed MoCuO x excellent catalytic activity. The synergy of Mo and Cu species in MoCuO x ensured an efficient conversion of HMF to FDCA through synergistic redox couple of Mo 6+ /Mo 5+ and Cu 2+ /Cu + .

The production of amine intermediates from biomass is capturing increasing attention. Herein, an efficient conversion of furfural to furfural amine over RuCo/AC catalyst under hydrothermal conditions has been investigated. The effects of different carriers, bimetals, and reaction conditions were systematically investigated in green solvents (water). Fully conversion of furfural and high furfural amine yield (92.13%) at 80 ℃ for 1 h over 4Ru1Co/AC. The excellent catalytic performance of 4Ru1Co/AC was attributed to its high acidity and good hydrogenation ability, as well as the synergistic effect between Ru-Co alloy formations and the activated carbon. Importantly, the highly selective preparation of furfural to furfural amine is a promising way to high-value utilization of cellulosic biomass in green solvents.

The efficient and sustainable transformation of biomass-derived furfural into value-added chemicals is a key challenge in green chemistry. In this study, a series of Pt/CeO 2 catalysts with varying Pt loadings (0.1–2.0 wt%) were synthesized via a carbonization–reduction method and applied for the selective conversion of furfural to 2-furfural diethanol in ethanol under mild conditions. Comprehensive characterization using XRD, XPS, EPR, TEM, and Py-FTIR revealed that the 1.0 wt% Pt/CeO 2 catalyst exhibited optimal properties, including high dispersion of metallic Pt⁰, abundant oxygen vacancies, enriched Ce 3+ species, and dominant Lewis acid sites. Catalytic tests demonstrated that under mild conditions (20 °C, 4 MPa N 2 ), the 1.0 wt% Pt/CeO 2 catalyst achieved the highest yield (92.17 %) and furfural conversion (95.41 %). Mechanistic studies suggest a proposed redox-driven tandem hydrogenation–condensation pathway, where the synergistic effect between Pt⁰ sites and oxygen vacancies facilitates furfural activation, hydrogen transfer, and product formation. This work provides a mechanistic understanding of furfural upgrading over Pt/metal oxide interfaces and offers a promising strategy for the rational design of high-performance catalysts for biomass valorization.

Five biomass-based materials: sesame straw (SS), corn cobs (CC), bamboo powder (BP), wheat straw (WS), and furfural residue (FR), were sulfonated using sulfuric acid, as well as some commercial sulfonated catalysts, like Amberlyst, Nafion were compared for the production of ethyl levulinate (EL) from furfuryl alcohol (FAL). Remarkably, under optimum conditions (50 mg of 8% SO3H-FR at 170 °C for 5 h), 100% FAL conversion and 90% EL yield were achieved, along with stable recyclability in continuous flow. Dynamic evolution of GC in the function of reaction time under different temperatures was performed, indicating that FAL conversion to ethoxymethylfuran (EMF) occurs under a lower temperature (150 °C) and short time (45 min). On the contrary, the intermediates 5, 6, and 7 required a higher temperature for EL formation with the concomitant release of diethyl ether (DEE). Comprehensive characterizations demonstrated significant changes in the chemical composition of sulfur- or nitrogen-containing functional groups after sulfonation. In particular, the −S–O types (especially −SO3H) play a more critical role in EL production than the sulfur content alone. The adsorption energies and charge density differences of FAL (Eads) on pristine FR and the sites of −SO3H, −SO4, pyrrolic N, pyridinic N, and their complexes were compared. The FAL adsorption energy followed the order: Eads (complex) > Eads (−SO4) > Eads (−SO3H) > Eads (pyrrolic N) > Eads (pyridinic N)>Eads (pristine), indicating a synergistic adsorption effect among these functional groups in FR. Additionally, the electron transfer capacity was significantly enhanced after −SO3H doping.

Furfural-tolerant and hydrogen-producing microbial consortia were enriched from soil, with hydrogen production of 259.84 mL/g-xylose under 1 g/L furfural stress. The consortia could degrade 2.5 g/L furfural within 24 h in the xylose system, more efficient than in the sugar-free system. Despite degradation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol, the release of reactive oxygen species and lactate dehydrogenase was also detected, suggesting that furfuryl alcohol is also a potential inhibitor of hydrogen production. The butyrate/acetate ratio was observed to decrease with increasing furfural concentration, leading to decreased hydrogen production. Furthermore, microbial community analysis suggested that dominated Clostridium butyricum was responsible for furfural degradation, while Clostridium beijerinckii reduction led to hydrogen production decrease. Overall, the enriched consortia in this study could efficiently degrade furfural and produce hydrogen, providing new insights into hydrogen-producing microbial consortia with furfural tolerance.

Photocatalytic hydrogenation of furfural offers an ideal method for selective biomass upgrading into value-added chemicals or fuel additives under mild conditions. However, it is still challenging to control the product selectivity due to side reactions of functional groups and reactive radical intermediates. Herein, photocatalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural was studied using the TiO 2 -based photocatalysts with alcohols as both the solvent and hydrogen donor. Ultralow loading metal supported on TiO 2 , together with adding a small amount of water in the system, were demonstrated to greatly increase the selectivity of furfuryl alcohol product. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis) and photoluminescence (PL) measurements gave evidence that ultralow loading Pt or Pd on TiO 2 increase the oxygen vacancy concentration and the photogenerated charge separation efficiency, which accelerates the photocatalytic reduction of furfural. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and mechanistic studies confirmed that photogenerated holes and electrons are active species, with dissociatively adsorbed methanol being directly oxidized by holes, furfural hydrogenated by protons and electrons and H 2 O modifying the intermediate diffusion which contributes to high selectivity of furfuryl alcohol. This work demonstrates a simple approach to design photocatalysts and tune product selectivity in biomass valorization.

UiO-66-derived H 2 N-UiO-66-SO 3 H with acid-base active sites was used for the co-production of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (5-HMF) and furfural (FUR) in the direct conversion of holocellulose composed of cellulose and hemicellulose. The prepared catalyst was further characterized by various techniques, confirming its formation, structure, and composition. H 2 N-UiO-66-SO 3 H displayed excellent performance for the selective conversion of holocellulose to 5-HMF and FUR, achieving yields of 39.1 % and 28.2 %, respectively. The reusability of the catalyst was also investigated by direct use after recycling without any pretreatment. The results indicated that H 2 N-UiO-66-SO 3 H had good stability, and after four cycles, the yields of 5-HMF and FUR decreased only slightly to 37.2 % and 27.1 %, respectively. The recyclable catalyst H 2 N-UiO-66-SO 3 H for the effective conversion of holocellulose to 5-HMF and FUR demonstrated application potential for the utilization of lignocellulosic biomass.

Waste furfural residue is converted into high-performance CO 2 adsorbent. • The adsorbent delivers 4.78 mmol/g CO 2 uptake with 99% cyclic stability. • The integrated system cuts CO 2 emissions while generating extra adsorbent output. • Techno-economic and life cycle analyses evaluate adsorbent use for flue gas CO 2 adsorption. Agricultural residues such as corn stover and oat husks are promising renewable feedstocks for the sustainable and cost-effective production of furfural, which is a widely recognized platform chemical derived from biomass. However, the production of furfural produces large amounts of furfural residue (FR). Its lower carbon and higher ash content relative to the original biomass pose significant disposal challenges. In this study, we propose a strategy that upcycles FR into porous carbon adsorbents and apply them in the furfural production system to simultaneously address the low-value utilization of FR and the flue-gas treatment challenges in furfural plants. Hydrothermal pretreatment combined with synergistic activation using potassium oxalate monohydrate and urea was employed to produce porous carbon materials. A post-combustion CO 2 capture system incorporating the porous carbon into a furfural plant was established, and the process was evaluated through techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA). The results indicate that the CO 2 adsorption capacity reached 4.78 mmol/g at 0 °C with 99% capacity retention after 10 cycles. TEA and LCA further showed that, compared with the conventional process, the system produces an additional 221 kg of adsorbent per ton of furfural and reduces CO 2 emissions by 5180 kg. Compared with the conventional system, the integrated system with flue gas CO 2 adsorption reduced both global warming potential and primary energy demand. In addition, the integrated system exhibits improved environmental performance. The global warming potential (GWP) decreases from 2.61 kg CO 2 -eq to a significantly negative value in the integrated system, indicating net CO 2 capture benefits enabled by the introduction of the flue gas adsorption unit. The acidification potential (AP) is also reduced compared with the conventional system, suggesting lower emissions of acidifying gases such as SO 2 and NO x . Overall, this work demonstrates a feasible circular strategy for sustainable furfural production by upcycling FR into porous carbon adsorbents for flue-gas CO 2 capture, supported by a multi-scale evaluation integrating material performance, process simulation, and life-cycle impacts. Upgrading of furanic aldehydes to their corresponding furancarboxylic acids has received considerable interest recently. Herein we reported selective oxidation of furfural (FAL) to furoic acid (FA) with quantitative yield using whole-cells of Pseudomonas putida KT2440. The biocatalytic capacity could be substantially promoted through adding 5-hydroxymethylfurfural into media at the middle exponential growth phase. The reaction pH and cell dosage had notable impacts on both FA titer and selectivity. Based on the validation of key factors for FAL conversion, the capacity of P. putida KT2440 to produce FAL was substantially improved. In batch bioconversion, 170 mM FA was produced with selectivity nearly 100% in 2 h, whereas 204 mM FA was produced with selectivity above 97% in 3 h in fed-batch bioconversion. Particularly, the role of molybdate transporter in oxidation of FAL and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural was demonstrated for the first time. The furancarboxylic acids synthesis was repressed markedly by destroying molybdate transporter, which implied Mo-dependent enzyme/molybdoenzyme played pivotal role in such oxidation reactions. This research further highlights the potential of P. putida KT2440 as next generation industrial workhorse and provides a novel understanding of molybdoenzyme in oxidation of furanic aldehydes.

Biomass energy stands at the forefront of remedial strategies for the current energy deficit and has garnered considerable attention. The deployment of highly efficient catalysts is pivotal to the success of this energy form. Prevailing literature established that high-valent metal presence contributed significantly to the hydrogenation of furfural to prepare 2-methylfuran. In this study, we elucidated the efficacy of a monometallic catalyst consisting solely of cobalt and its oxides, denoted as Co/CoOx, in the catalytic transformation of furfural derived from lignocellulosic biomass into 2-methylfuran. Leveraging the economical Co/CoOx catalyst, in conjunction with minimal addition of hydroquinone, we accomplished the selective hydrodeoxygenation of furfural, culminating in an augmented yield of 2-MF up to 73%. This investigation is the inaugural confirmation that minuscule quantities of hydroquinone can efficaciously mitigate side reactions such as the polymerization of furfural within the selective hydrodeoxygenation process. The Co/CoOx catalyst was characterized through an array of analytical techniques, including XRD, H2-TPR and N2-adsorption. These characterization studies unveiled that the optimal selectivity for 2-methylfuran was achieved when the ratio of Co0 : Co2+ in the catalyst approached approximately 95%.

Furfural (FF) is an important bio-based platform compound derived from lignocellulose. It can be converted into many industrially valuable chemicals, a typical one being methyl-2-furoate (MF). At present, MF production depends largely on vigorous one-step chemical catalysis (oxidative esterification), in which expensive catalysts (precious metals) and a high temperature (60–120 °C) are required. To reduce the costs of this procedure, a mild, green, and cheap chemoenzymatic process is proposed where FF is initially chemically oxidized to furoic acid (FA), and then FA is enzymatically esterified to MF. Neither step requires an expensive catalyst, and both occur at low temperatures (30–50 °C). For the chemical oxidation process, the optimized FA yield of 83.7% was obtained at 40 °C with an FF/BTIC (1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) imidazolium chloride) molar ratio of 0.18, 10 mL N -methyl pyrrolidone, and 0.1 MPa oxygen pressure. For the enzymatic esterification, the optimized MF yield reached 80.6% at 50 °C with 50 mg•mL −1 enzyme loading and an alcohol/acid ratio of 7:1. Kinetic studies demonstrated the oxidation to be a sixth-order reaction, and the esterification to be an endothermic reaction. For both oxidation and esterification reactions, the relationship between the rate constant and temperature agreed well with the Arrhenius equation. For esterification, the relationship between the equilibrium constant and the temperature also agreed with the Van't Hoff equation. A 67.5% MF yield was obtained when sequential oxidation and esterification were initiated from FF. The development of chemoenzymatic processes for MF production from FF is effective and has potential value in decreasing the production cost of MF. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
