Electron-assisted synthesis of g-C3N4/MoS2 composite with dual defects for enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalysis

Jingxuan Zheng,Bo Zhang,Zhao Wang

g-C3N4/MoS2 composites were successfully prepared by an electron-assisted strategy in one step. Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma as an electron source, which has low bulk temperature and high electron energy, can etch and modify the surface of g-C3N4/MoS2. The abundant N and S vacancies were introduced in the composites by plasma. The dual defects promoted the recombination and formation of heterojunctions of the g-C3N4/MoS2 composite. It exhibited stronger light harvesting ability and higher charge separation efficiency than that of pure g-C3N4 and MoS2. Compared with the sample by traditional calcination method, the plasma-sample showed better performance for degrading rhodamine B (RhB) and methyl orange. RhB is completely degraded within 2 hours on g-C3N4/MoS2 by plasma. A mechanism for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants via the composites was proposed. An electron-assisted strategy provides a green and effective platform to achieve catalysts with improved performance.

Enhanced synergistic performance of g-C3N4/MoS2 with hollow structure for tetracycline photocatalytic degradation in complex environments: Performance and mechanism

Junfei Liu,Yingbo Dong,Yue Zhang,Wei Liu,Jian Xu,Hai Lin

The toxicity of antibiotic and heavy metal combined pollutants is greater than single antibiotic, achieving its synergistic removal is the key. In this work, a novel g-C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 photocatalyst with hollow structure (CN/MS-V-3) was fabricated by one-step solvothermal method . As expected, CN/MS-V-3 showed an outstanding removal efficiency for tetracycline and Cu 2+ of 98.49% and 99.90%, respectively. The excellent photocatalytic degradation performance for tetracycline in compound wastewater mainly ascribed to the enhanced visible-light capture ability by hollow structure of CN/MS-V-3, formation 1 O 2 and ·OH, and the cycle of Cu 2+ /Cu + and Mo 2+ /Mo 4+ induced the fast electrons transport . The contamination of Cu 2+ in wastewater can play as an accelerator in the CN/MS-V-3 reaction system to improve the degradation performance of tetracycline. DFT results indicated that CN/MS-V-3 heterojunction was formed by combination of side surface MoS 2 –V and g-C 3 N 4 , and the Cu adsorption onto CN/MS-V-3 showed a potential formation of Cu–N and Cu–S bonds. In addition, the tetracycline degradation pathways and evaluation of toxicity of intermediates were also proposed. This work not only provides a promising technology for antibiotic and heavy metal combined contamination removal, but also a clever use of Cu variable valence to accelerate electron cycling to improve the removal performance of the CN/MS-V-3.

g-C3N4/MoS2 based floating solar still for clean water production by thermal/light activation of persulfate

Qimao Gan,Yangyi Xiao,Chenxing Li,Huan Peng,Tuqiao Zhang,Miaomiao Ye

Currently, seawater desalination based on air-water interface solar heating has triggered significant research interests because it effectively makes use of the solar energy and avoids fossil fuel consumption. However, to prevent the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from volatilizing with water vapor which later will liquefy and enter the condensed freshwater is still a challenge. In this work, a g-C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 based floating solar still (CM-FSS) combined with thermal/light activation of persulfate (PS) at air-water interface was applied for clean freshwater production for the first time. The CM-FSS was composed of a g-C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 top layer for solar absorption, simultaneous thermal/light activation of PS and then VOCs degradation at air-water interface, a floating layer of expandable polyethylene (EPE) foam for heat isolation, and a transport channel of air-laid paper (ALP) for seawater and PS solution delivery. The water evaporation rate of the CM-FSS was measured at 1.23 kg m −2 h −1 under 1 kW m −2 , which is 4.09 times higher than that of pure water without an evaporator. With the assistance of g-C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 photocatalytic degradation and thermal/light activation of PS at the air-water interface, a high removal efficiency of a selected model VOCs pollutant of nitrobenzene (NB) could reach to 98.2% in condensed freshwater. Finally, when real seawater samples were employed as source water for solar distillation, the typical water-quality indices such as salinity , turbidity , anions, cations and organics of the condensed freshwater were below the limit values of the Standards for Drinking Water Quality in WHO, US EPA and China.

Recyclable detection of gefitinib in clinical sample mediated by multifunctional Ag-anchored g-C3N4/MoS2 composite substrate

Tao Xu,Rongyan Wang,Chenjie Gu,Tao Jiang

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology enables to satisfy the increasing demand of clinical drug monitoring due to the superiority of fingerprint recognition, real-time response, and nondestructive collection. Here, a novel graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 )/ molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 )/Ag composite substrate with a 3D surface structure was successfully developed for the recyclable detection of gefitinib in serum. Attributed to the uniform and dense “hotspots” on the shrubby active surfaces in conjunction with the potential synergistic chemical enhancement of g-C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 heterosystem, a remarkable SERS sensitivity with an attractive enhancement factor value of 3.3 × 10 7 was demonstrated. Meanwhile, a type-II heterojunction between g-C 3 N 4 and MoS 2 enabled more efficient diffusion of photogenerated e − -h + pairs assisted by the localized surface plasmon resonance of Ag NPs, which contributed to the reliable recyclable detection of gefitinib. The ultra-low limit of detection at 10 −5 mg/mL and high recycling rates of gefitinib beyond 90% in serum were successfully realized. The results demonstrated the as-prepared SERS substrate has tremendous potential to be untilized for in-situ drug diagnostics.

Mingmin Jia,Wenhao Cao,Qiuxia Chen,Zhiyi Xia,Shuo Shi,Mingzhi Zheng,Hengyang Mao,Meisheng Li,Yijiang Zhao,Dingliang Dai,Jianhao Qiu

In this study, a g-C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 composite membrane was successfully fabricated via electrostatic interactions and vacuum-assisted self-assembly. The established heterojunction markedly enhanced charge separation, yielding superior visible-light photocatalytic activity with 95.5% methylene blue degradation in 150   min. The membrane also demonstrated efficient dye separation (70.8% rejection for carmine red; 66.7% for malachite green) and notable antifouling properties, achieving a 74.9% flux recovery after visible-light cleaning. This work presents a synergistic strategy for simultaneous photocatalytic degradation and membrane separation in advanced water treatment.

3D flower-shaped g-C3N4/MoS2 composite with structure defect for synergistic degradation of dyes

Haixia Lyu,Wenzhang Zhu,Kaixuan Chen,Jun Gao,Zenghong Xie

Three dimensions (3D) flower-shaped g-C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 composite was prepared by immobilizing molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) on carbon nitride (C 3 N 4 ) with structural defects by in-situ hydrothermal assay. The morphological structure and photochemical properties of the obtained catalysts were characterized by SEM, TEM , EDS, FTIR , XRD and XPS. Using methylene blue (MB) as the target pollutant, the photocatalytic performance cyclic stability of g-C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 composite were studied under simulated sunlight. The results showed that the prepared catalyst could remove 98 % of MB within 60 min and still reached 96.4 % after 5 cycles with good stability and regeneration. Its apparent rate constant was 0.0523 min −1 , which was 11.5, 8.2 and 13.9 times higher than those of g-C 3 N 4 (0.00453 min −1 ), C 3 N 4 with structural defects (0.00635 min −1 ) and MoS 2 (0.00377 min −1 ), indicating that the synergistic effect of structural defects, heterojunctions and 3D structure has achieved efficient degradation of MB. Furthermore, the photocatalytic mechanism of g-C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 composite was proposed by combining free radical capture experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and the results showed that that ·OH and ·O 2 - played a primary role in the catalytic degradation.

Synergistic construction of g-C3N4/MoS2/rGO ternary nanocomposite for enhanced photocatalytic degradation under visible light

Lei Ying,Bao Qijing,Lin Feng,Zhang Jian,Zhang Yanji,Wu Yuechao,Lv Liang,Ding Liyong

Graphite carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) has emerged as a promising photocatalyst for visible-light-driven applications due to its suitable band structure. However, the rapid recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs in bulk g-C 3 N 4 significantly hinders its photocatalytic efficiency. In this study, we report the fabrication of a ternary g-C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 /rGO (CMG) nanocomposite via in situ photoreduction-induced exfoliation. The introduction of MoS 2 and rGO not only facilitates the exfoliation of g-C 3 N 4 into ultrathin nanosheet, thereby exposing more active sites, but also enables the formation of tightly coupled heterojunctions that promote charge separation and transfer. Photoluminescence (PL) analyses confirm the suppressed recombination of charge carriers, indicative of enhanced charge dynamics within the heterojunction between MoS 2 , rGO and g-C 3 N 4 . Among the synthesized materials, the optimized CMG-175 composite exhibits remarkable photocatalytic activity, achieving a 95.7% degradation rate of Rhodamine B (RhB) within 30 min under visible light irradiation, which is 23.6-fold enhancement compared to pristine g-C 3 N 4 . Mechanistic studies reveal that photogenerated holes and superoxide radicals are the predominant reactive species driving the degradation process. This work highlights a rational design strategy for constructing high-performance g-C 3 N 4 -based heterojunction photocatalysts and provides valuable insight into the synergistic interactions among MoS 2 , rGO, and g-C 3 N 4 for efficient organic pollutant removal.

Novel 2D/2D/2D heterojunction of ZnIn2S4/g-C3N4/MoS2 for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

Yunqi Ning,Daqi Lv,Qi Tang,Hanbing Wang,Xiaowan Hu,Yuming Cao,Shansheng Yu,Hongwei Tian

Photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) have widely been explored but fine-tuning and engineering multiphase photocatalyst components are still challenging. Among catalysts, ZnIn 2 S 4 has shown promise but maximizing the use of ZnIn 2 S 4 -photogenerated carriers and enhancing quantum yield still require further investigation. One way to achieve this is by enhancing the photon utilization and reducing the recombination of shallow carriers in ZnIn 2 S 4 . Accordingly, novel ZnIn 2 S 4 /g-C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 type-II heterojunction composites with 2D/2D/2D structures (abbreviated ZIS/CN/MS) were synthesized in the present work by simple thermal condensation-solvothermal method. The optimized ZIS/CN/MS exhibited a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 13.6 mmol g −1  h −1 under visible light (λ ≥ 420 nm) irradiation, a value much higher than those of pure-phases ZIS and CN, as well as the binary composite of ZIS/CN. The apparent quantum efficiency of the optimized ZIS/CN/MS at a wavelength of 420 nm reached 27.0 % coupled with excellent cycling stability. The significantly improved photocatalytic performance and the excellent stability can mainly be attributed to the unique 2D/2D/2D arrangement of the ternary components of ZIS, CN, and MS in ZIS/CN/MS photocatalyst, providing a large number of close interfacial contacts between the components for shortened migration distance of photogenerated charges and more pathways for electron separation and transport in type-II heterostructures. Overall, the proposed methodology and ZIS/CN/MS composites with type-II heterojunction and 2D/2D/2D structures have great potential for use in solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion and can be extended to the preparation of other photocatalysts.

Construction of 2D g-C3N4/MoS2 heterojunction photocatalyst for enhanced degradation of pollution under visible light

Zijun Zhong,Ruopeng Xu,Huijuan He,Qiuna Zhuang,Langhuan Huang

ABSTRACT A novel g-C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 heterojunction photocatalyst with high efficient visible-light-region was fabricated by a facile calcination method. The composite with various weight ratios of g-C 3 N 4 and MoS 2 was synthesized and characterized. The results showed that MoS 2 was uniformly distributed on the surface of g-C 3 N 4 , resulting in the formation of heterostructure. The photocatalyst showed excellent photocatalytic activity in the photodegradation of organic pollutants. The optimized g-C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 sample (10-CNM) exhibited 94% (Methylene Blue) degradation efficiency after being irradiated for 2 h under visible light. At last, the possible mechanism of the enhanced photocatalytic activity was discussed.

Enhanced photocatalytic performance of protonated graphite carbon nitride/molybdenum sulphide heterojunction for degradation of methyl orange dye

Yusong Pan,Minyuan Yin,Hongjun Fang,Linfeng Xu,Hanxian Yan,Chengling Pan

Protonated g-C3N4/MoS2 heterojunction with enhanced photocatalytic activity was prepared by treating g-C3N4/MoS2 with formic acid and using a hydrothermal method. The microstructure and morphology of the heterojunctions were analysed by XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM, and XPS technology, respectively. The photodegradation experiment results verified that the formic acid treatment has a positive effect on the photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4/MoS2 heterojunctions. The as-prepared protonated g-C3N4/MoS2 composite with 5 wt% of MoS2 exhibited the highest photodegradation rate and photodegradation kinetic constant (k) for degradation of methyl orange (MO) dye. The activated species trapping experiment revealed that the superoxide radical (·O2−) plays an important role for degradation of MO dye. Furthermore, the investigation on the photocatalytic mechanism inferred that the enhanced photocatalytic property of protonated g-C3N4/MoS2 composite could be attributed to the Z-scheme electron migration mechanism in composite and the improved photo-induced electron-hole separation.

Homogeneous detection of 5-hydroxymethylcytosine based on electrochemiluminescence quenching of g-C3N4/MoS2 nanosheets by ferrocenedicarboxylic acid polymer

Chengji Sui,Qian Wang,Yunlei Zhou,Dingding Zhang,Huanshun Yin,Shiyun Ai

A sensitively homogeneous electrochemiluminescence (ECL) method was developed for 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) detection using TiO 2 /MoS 2 /g-C 3 N 4 /GCE as substrate electrode, where g-C 3 N 4 was employed as the ECL active material, the MoS 2 nanosheets were used as co-catalyst, and TiO 2 was adopted as phosphate group capture reagent. To achieve the specific recognition and capture of 5hmC, the covalent reaction between –CH 2 OH and –SH was employed under the catalysis of HhaI methyltransferase, in which, –SH functionalized ferrocenedicarboxylic acid polymer (PFc-SH) was prepared as 5hmC capture reagent and ECL signal quencher. Then, based on the interaction between TiO 2 and phosphate group of 5hmC, the target was recognized and captured on electrode, resulting in a decreased ECL response due to the quenching effect of PFc-SH. Under optimal conditions, the biosensor presented the linear range from 0.01 to 500 nM with the detection limit of 3.21 pM (S/N = 3). The steric effect on electrode surface is a bottle-neck issue restricting devised biosensors advancement. In this work, the reaction between 5hmC and PFc was carried out in the solution, which can avoid steric effect on electrode surface to keep the high activity of enzyme. In addition, the biosensor was successfully applied to detect 5hmC in genomic DNA of chicken embryo fibroblast cells and different tissues of rice seedlings.

Fabrication of interlayer β-CD/g-C3N4@MoS2 for highly enhanced photodegradation of glyphosate under simulated sunlight irradiation

Xiufang He,Zhansheng Wu,Yongtao Xue,Zhenzhen Gao,Xia Yang

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has been considered to be a promising metal-free photocatalyst, although the high recombination rate of charge carriers and poor absorption of visible light have limited its applications. In order to overcome these problems, an interlayer composite photocatalyst that comprised β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), oxygen-doped C3N4 (O-C3N4) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) was successfully constructed for the highly enhanced photodegradation of glyphosate in this study. The structure and morphology, optical properties, and photoelectrochemical properties of the prepared photocatalyst were characterized via a series of characterization techniques. The average fluorescence lifetime of the composite photocatalyst was extended from 6.67 ns to 7.30 ns in comparison with that of g-C3N4, which indicated that the composite photocatalyst enhanced the absorption of visible light and also inhibited the recombination of electron–hole pairs. The mass ratio of MoS2 that corresponded to O-C3N4/MoS2-5 enabled the highest removal rate under simulated sunlight irradiation, which was almost twice that achieved using pure g-C3N4. Relative species scavenging experiments revealed that ·O2− was the main species during the process of photodegradation. Besides, a toxicity test indicated that glyphosate became less toxic or non-toxic after photodegradation. This study provided an effective, feasible and stable photocatalyst driven by simulated sunlight irradiation for the highly enhanced photodegradation of glyphosate.
