3D-Printed Kirigami-Inspired Asymmetric Dressings: Custom Elasticity and Self-Pumping for Enhanced Wound Healing

Zhen Gu,Siyang Cheng,Zhe Huang,Heng An,liping zhou,Yongqiang Wen

Preventing infections and managing excessive exudate in dynamic joints are vital for effective wound treatment. Accurately fitting dressings to wound shapes remains a significant challenge, which can adversely affect both healing and patient comfort. This study introduces a self-pumping dressing with tailored shape and tensile properties. This dressing channels excessive wound fluid in a unidirectional manner, achieved by electrospinning hydrophobic nanofibers embedded with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) onto a hydrophilic 3D-printed patch featuring a kirigami structure. By systematically adjusting parameters-cutting length l, horizontal spacing d, and vertical spacing ℎ, we enabled the elongation of the 3D-printed patch to range from 26% to 244%. Our personalized self-pumping dressings demonstrated effective antibacterial activity, unidirectional fluid transmission, and biocompatibility, thereby accelerating wound healing. This research establishes a promising pathway for personalized and precise local wound care.

Efficient Water Mist Collector with Both a Kirigami Structure and Chemical Modification

Xiaobo Wang,Zhiguang Guo,Weimin Liu

The shortage of freshwater resources is a common problem faced by people all over the world. Water mist collection provides a feasible solution to this problem. In this paper, three kinds of foggers with a kirigami structure and chemical modification were prepared. Their fog collection efficiencies were 3.04, 3.17, and 3.54 g·h–1·cm–2, respectively, which were 1.57, 1.63, and 1.82 times that of the original zinc sheet. Then, the fog collector of sample 3 with the highest fogging efficiency was analyzed and discussed. In order to evaluate the practical application of the sample, durability and ultraviolet (UV) resistance tests of the sample were carried out. The experimental results show that the surface of sample 3 has better durability and excellent UV resistance. In addition, the fog collector design incorporating readily available materials and a straightforward preparation process showcases outstanding efficiency. As such, it presents a novel approach for the development of high-performance fog collection systems in the future.

Stretchable 3D kirigami-structured textiles for high-performance wearable energy harvesting and self-powered sensing

Yitong Wang,Yuanyuan Gao,Di Tan,Fungchi Nip,Hong Fu,Bingang Xu

Bio-mechanical energy from human motion is considered as one of the most ubiquitous, free, and sustainable resources, which has led to the development of wearable energy harvesting devices such as triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). However, generating excellent energy outputs while achieving high wearing comfort for wearable TENGs has long been a major challenge. In this study, we introduce a novel stretchable kirigami-structured textile-based triboelectric nanogenerator (SKS-TENG) that adopts a simple and economical kirigami approach. Owing to its special kirigami structure, the contact-separation efficiency of the surface is significantly improved, which can generate more charging output. The SKS-TENG has a unique repetitively stretchable structure and achieves amazing electrical performance with a power density of 3380 mW m −2 , which are several times higher than most existing textile-based TENGs. Even after twenty cycles of washing, it can still maintain stable electrical performance and has an impressive durability that can withstand more than 10,000 cycles. In addition, SKS-TENG is also assembled with clothing, which can power small electronic devices and light up 1636 LEDs on clothing. The excellent power generation performance of SKS-TENG demonstrates its great potential for future development in human motion energy harvesting, wearable electronic devices and smart textile applications.

Engineering Tough Metallosupramolecular Hydrogel Films with Kirigami Structures for Compliant Soft Electronics

Hai Chao Yu,Xing Peng Hao,Chuan Wei Zhang,Si Yu Zheng,Miao Du,Songmiao Liang,Zi Liang Wu,Qiang Zheng

A simple and effective approach is demonstrated to fabricate tough metallosupramolecular hydrogel films of poly(acrylic acid) by one-pot photopolymerization of the precursor solution in the presence of Zr 4+ ions that form coordination complexes with the carboxyl groups and serve as the physical crosslinks of the matrix. Both as-prepared and equilibrated hydrogel films are transparent, tough, and stable over a wide range of temperature, ionic strength, and pH. The thickness of the films can be easily tailored with minimum value of ≈7 μm. Owing to the fast polymerization and gelation process, kirigami structures can be facilely encoded to the gel films by photolithographic polymerization, affording versatile functions such as additional stretchability and better compliance of the planar films to encapsulate objects with sophisticated geometries that are important for the design of soft electronics. By stencil printing of liquid metal on the hydrogel film with a kirigami structure, the integrated soft electronics shows good compliance to cover curved surfaces and high sensitivity to monitor human motions. Furthermore, this strategy is applied to diverse natural and synthetic macromolecules containing carboxyl groups to develop tough hydrogel films, which will open opportunities for the applications of hydrogel films in biomedical and engineering fields.

Stretchable and Sensitive Strain Sensors Based on CB/MWCNTs–TPU for Human Motion Capture and Health Monitoring

Jianfang Xia,Lei He,Zhilai Lu,Linpeng Liu,Jianan Song,Siyu Chen,Qingshan Wang,Farid A. Hammad,Yanling Tian

Flexible strain sensors have attracted significant attention in the wearable electronic device field, owing to their exceptional ductility, sensitivity, and durability compared to rigid strain sensors. However, the limited strain detection range or sensitivity has hindered their widespread application. In this study, a flexible strain sensor is fabricated by screen-printing a conductive carbon black ink layer on a conductive flexible composite layer made of thermoplastic polyurethane and multiwalled carbon nanotubes. Both kirigami-patterned and fingerprint-patterned structures are introduced to the architecture of sensors; while the former is designed for the improvement of strain sensing range, the latter serves for the enhancement of sensitivity and interfacial adhesion. It is demonstrated that the sensor achieves high sensitivity with a gauge factor of up to 5705.53 and has a wide strain sensing range from 0 to 150%. Besides, the sensor also shows good durability (6000 stretching–releasing cycles) and a fast response time of ∼220 ms. The excellent sensor performance of the flexible strain sensor suggests promising applications in human–computer interaction, medical health monitoring, and motion capture.

Active W-VO2-based Kirigami-structured films with digital control for energy efficient smart window

Zhengjie Chen,Chengchen Feng,Lin Jiang,Yujie Ke,Xiaoxue Han,Xinghai Liu

Smart window promises to enhance the building energy efficiency by dynamically controlling the indoor solar irradiation. In this study, a new thermochromic smart films for smart window applications were proposed. This film is based on polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-coated tungsten-doped VO 2 (W-VO 2 ) and polyurethane acrylate (PUA). It is demonstrated that the PVP-coating technique plays a vital role in improving the optical properties of the film and the dispersion of W-VO 2 in PUA. The optimized 3D-printed Kirigami-structured films exhibit favorable tensile properties and improved optical properties. Furthermore, an innovative device has been developed to enable automatic adjustment of the film stretch rate in response to the angle of sunlight, ensuring the smart window's dynamic response to sunlight. The film's solar transmittance varies between 48.50 % and 78.56 % during stretching, accompanied by a solar modulation up to 30.05 %. In the indoor and outdoor demo experiments, the temperature drops by 5.2 °C and 4.8 °C, respectively, compared to a PUA film window. The work developed a new film for energy-efficient smart windows and provides a systematic technological route from materials synthesis, structural optimization, system digital control, to practical demo assessment, which promises to facilitate the development of VO 2 -based materials and energy-efficient windows.

Stretchable Liquid Metal E-Skin for Soft Robot Proprioceptive Vibration Sensing

Zihan Wang,Kai-Chong Lei,Huaze Tang,Yang Luo,Hongfa Zhao,Peisheng He,Wenbo Ding,Liwei Lin

Vibration perception can help robots recognize their dynamic states to explore the surrounding environment. However, the intrinsic stretchability of soft robots poses challenges to integrating vibration sensors. This study introduces an innovative stretchable electronic skin (e-skin) that facilitates vibration proprioception in soft robots. Constructed with a thickness of approximately 0.1 mm, this ultrathin e-skin is produced using a screen-printing technique with liquid metal particles (LMPs), incorporating a kirigami design for seamless integration. The e-skin works by the triboelectric nanogenerator-based sensing mechanism, which transduces mechanical vibration into an electrical signal without an external power source. By analyzing the vibration signals generated by the dynamic motions of soft robots, the e-skin shows a wide range of applications. From the vibration signal of the soft robotic finger’s sliding motion, 17 different textures can be distinguished with 99% accuracy. Furthermore, analysis of the vibration signal from a soft robotic gripper’s swinging motion enables the estimation of both the type and weight of grains inside the container it grips, achieving accuracies of 97.7% and 95.3%, respectively. As such, this work presents a new approach to realizing the vibration proprioception of soft robots, thereby broadening the applications of dynamic proprioception in soft robotics.
