The combination of 3D printing , polymer derived ceramics, and electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption metamaterials is particularly useful for spacecraft stealth in extreme environments and is gradually gaining significant interest. While the 3D printing of SiOC has been extensively researched, the high temperature stability and mechanical performance of SiOC are not as favorable as SiCN. However, it remains challenging to prepare SiCN metamaterials with both high mechanical and microwave absorption properties by 3D printing. Herein, we demonstrate a SiCN EMW absorption metamaterial with high mechanical properties using digital light processing 3D printing, which achieves a minimum reflection loss of −31.01 dB (99.9 % absorption), and the widest effective absorption bandwidth covers the entire X-band from 8.2 to 12.4 GHz. And the EMW absorption performance can be adjusted based on the size of the unit structure.

Metamaterials, which consist of artificial meta-atoms with subwavelength feature size, offer strong capability for manipulating the multiple degrees of freedom of electromagnetic waves. However, their practical applications are usually constrained by the limitations of specific manufacturing processes, including the optical responses of materials, interface compatibility, lithography resolution, and so on. Here, we propose a monolithic integration manufacturing approach of 3D metamaterials by using low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology. In the concept proof experiment, we design and fabricate the 3D chiral metamaterials that exhibit strong circular dichroism in the millimeter wave regime. It is achieved by embedding spatially variant silver meta-atoms into a low-loss LTCC matrix through screen-printing and low-temperature co-firing processes. This monolithic integration strategy opens new avenues for making 3D metamaterials working in the millimeter wave and even THz spectral region, and may have great potentials in developing ultra-compact electromagnetic systems for sensing, communications, computing, and imaging applications.

Chiral metamaterials (CMs) based on the Born–Kuhn (BK) model enable giant chiroptical responses but face fabrication complexity, structural limitations, and insufficient theoretical optimization. Here, ultrathin 2.5D BK-based metamaterials is developed using shadow sphere lithography (SSL), overcoming traditional electron beam lithography constraints and costly alignment. The three-layer rotated hole-array (3RHA) structures, comprising rotated Ag/SiO 2 /Au stacks (<100 nm thickness), achieve enhanced chiroptical performance ( g -factor = 0.6, CD/ t = 67°/µm) via optimized plasmon hybridization. Machine learning-assisted parametric analyses identify optimal geometric parameters, validated experimentally. The 3RHAs showcase high sensitivity robustness in detecting chiral thalidomide enantiomers, facilitated by a second-order norm ( L 2 norm) signal processing method. This scalable and precise approach significantly advances BK-model CMs, providing a practical platform for ultrathin, high-performance chiral photonic and sensing devices.

Metamaterials are electromagnetic materials with engineered sub-wavelength structures, which can be coupled with the incident electromagnetic wave to produced peculiar physical properties. Currently, many studies are being conducted to the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) due to their unique structures and novel physical properties. Here, we produced honeycomb nanostructure with various sizes on few-layer PtS 2 through a well-developed nanosphere lithography technology. In this way, the unique properties of PtS 2 metamaterials can be tuned to explore more exotic physical characteristics. The honeycomb surface morphology of PtS 2 metamaterials has been demonstrated using the scanning electron microscope and the atomic force microscope. The optical absorption spectra of Pt and PtS 2 metamaterials were investigated and the results show that the absorption spectra can be modulated by changing the size of the nanostructure . In addition, the optical anisotropic properties of Pt and PtS 2 metamaterials were characterized through the angle-resolved absorption spectra. Raman spectroscopy shows the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) effect of Pt metamaterials. The simulation exhibits the electric field distribution of PtS 2 metamaterials at different wavelengths. The results offer a new approach to develop novel optoelectronic devices based on the meta-structure of TMDs.

Electromagnetic (EM) metamaterial is a composite material with EM stealth properties, which is constructed by artificially reverse engineering metal split resonance rings (SRR). However, the greatest limitation of EM metamaterials is that they can only stealth at a fixed and lower frequency of EM waves, and modern processing techniques still cannot meet the accuracy requirements to fabric nano-size structural unit. Nano-sized and even ultra-small SRR at molecular level are promising arrays to realize the ability of EM stealth function at a higher frequency, although it has proven challenging to synthesize long, straight, connected molecular SRR, and also difficult to arrange those molecular SRR into a strict array. Here, the study overcomes this challenge and demonstrates that the fabric of polypyrrole molecular SRR achieves an ultra-small inner diameter of 2.49 Å and realizes the arrays arrangement at molecular level. Furthermore, the study exploits the EM stealth function and verifies that such arrays of molecular SRR with 2.49 Å have the ability to reach high-performance EM stealth in the range of 10 6 –10 16 Hz. This design concept opens a pathway for developing new metamaterials with broadband EM wave stealth and also serves the wider range of new applications.

Objects can be identified based on their distinctive scattering signatures in multiple physical areas such as optics, electromagnetics, and thermotics. To ensure comprehensive stealth and camouflage capabilities, antisense devices with multiphysical field coupling are highly desired. Herein, a multifunctional antisense metadevice that achieves stealth in the microwave band while also generating multiple camouflage images from the original object's position during the heat conduction process is proposed and demonstrated. The metadevice combines both antimicrowave detection and camouflage infrared imaging capabilities, resulting in broadband electromagnetic stealth and thermal camouflage effect. Experimental and simulation results confirm the metadevice's ability to achieve these multifunctional capabilities in temperature-dependent cases. The development of such multifunctional devices that span physical fields provides new avenues for the design and preparation of multifunctional structures.

Piezoresistive metamaterials fabricated via 3D printing have gained increasing attention due to their high flexibility and stability, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. However, conventional isotropic and planar designs of these metamaterials restrict their sensing capabilities to uniaxial detection, significantly limiting practical utility. In this study, a 3D piezoresistive metamaterial inspired by the 3D structure of dendrites beneath human skin, achieving multidirectional and multifunctional sensing capabilities is presented by controlling the distribution of different lattice micro cell types. These anisotropic piezoresistive metamaterials can be successfully fabricated by one-step digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. When integrated with augmented reality (AR) systems, these customizable metamaterials enable seamless object interaction workflows encompassing 3D spatial localization, capture, and recognition through real-time virtual feedback. Furthermore, a digital twin system is implemented to enhance real-time visual feedback in AR and deliver an immersive operating experience for the user. This synergistic combination of anisotropic design and one-step 3D printing establishes a novel paradigm for developing metamaterials with multifunctional, multiregional, and multidirectional sensing capabilities.

Chiral metamaterials were a typical metamaterial configuration, which had broad application prospects in vibration isolation, energy absorption and other fields. Although 4D-printed chiral metamaterials have been investigated by introducing stimulus-responsive materials to achieve programmable properties of metamaterials, chiral metamaterials are mostly fabricated by single materials, which limits the adjustable domains of the mechanical properties and the design freedom of metamaterials. In this work, inspired by the configuration of collagen fibers of biological tissues, the bio-inspired chiral metamaterials with wave ligaments were developed. The bi-phase (TPE@PLA-SMP) composite chiral metamaterials were fabricated by combining active phase (shape memory polylactic acid, PLA-SMP) with passive phase (thermoplastic elastomer, TPE). The influences of geometric parameters, ligament gradient forms, and TPE distribution modes on the mechanical properties of the developed metamaterials were characterized. When the TPE was distributed at 0° and 45°, the deformation of the mechanical metamaterials occurred mainly in the TPE cells, resulting in the J -shaped displacement-force curve. The programmable and reconfigurable properties of the metamaterials (including configuration, and energy absorption performance) under thermal stimulation were demonstrated. The specific energy absorption (SEA) of the metamaterial 2 θ = π /2 was realized to transform between 0.92 kJ/kg and 0.38 kJ/kg by shape memory programming. Flexible sensors based on TPE@PLA-SMP composite metamaterials were developed by filling CNC-CNT@PVA composite hydrogels (minimum resistivity 8.1 Ω m), which enabled stable output of electrical signals under repeated loads. A motion state monitor was developed and realized to monitor the wearer's movement such as running, demonstrating its potential application prospects in fields such as flexible electronics.

Mechanical metamaterials are complicated artificial materials composed of periodically interconnected microstructures, exhibiting extraordinary mechanical properties not available in natural materials. However, the periodically interconnected design model results in most current metamaterials suffering from following limitations: i ) lack of modularity and repairability, ii ) damage transmittability, iii ) weak scalable fabrication and limited fabrication dimensions, and iv ) single functionality. Inspired by the connection mechanism of mortise-tenon structures and the configuration of brick–mortar structures, 4D printed mortise-tenon mechanical-electromagnetic multifunctional pixel metamaterials (MPMs) are developed in this work. The innovative binding constraint, derived from the Hanfu silk ribbon, has been proposed, achieving reliable connection of the MPM while suppressing damage transmission. The modular structure design strategy of the PMM enables large-scale and scalable manufacturing, while also achieving repairability. The developed mechanical-electromagnetic MPMs have multifunctional properties, including lightweight, energy absorption, electromagnetic wave absorption (RL min –32.84 dB) and reconfigurability, which have a wide range of application prospects in the field of electromagnetic stealth equipment.

Fast, simple, and label-free detections and distinctions are desirable in cell biology analysis and diagnosis. Here, a biosensor based on terahertz metamaterial has luxuriant gaps, which can excite dipole resonance is designed. Filling the gaps with various analytes can change the biosensor’s capacitance resulting in electromagnetic properties changing. The idea is verified by simulations and experiments. The theoretical sensitivity of the biosensor approaches 290 GHz/RIU, and the experimental concentration sensitivity of the biosensor is ≥ 275 kHz mL/cell. Candida Albicans, Escherichia Coli, and Shigella Dysenteriae were selected as analytes, and the measurement frequency shift is 270 GHz, 290 GHz, and 310 GHz, respectively, which indicates that the biosensor can detect and distinguish these bacteria. Successfully detection of low-concentration glioblastoma (200 cells/mL), showing great potential for the early diagnosis of glioblastoma of the biosensor. This biosensor supplies a new horizon for cell detection, which will significantly benefit cell biology investigation.

Metamaterials display many electromagnetic properties, such as the manipulation of electromagnetic waves through the arrangement of small discrete structures. However, complex designs of mechanically or electrically patterned structures are required to modify these properties. We report on the use of rare earth orthoferrites to tune transmitted waves by engineering the thickness, composition, and temperature using terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy. The modeling of the process of manipulating the transmitted waves helps to elucidate the manipulated amplitude, transmittance, peak height, and frequency. The effectiveness of thickness engineering in tuning the transmitted waves, which conformed to the Beer–Lambert law, was demonstrated. The transmitted waves were also strongly affected by doping. In addition, a thermal anisotropic energy manipulation approach to tuning transmitted waves was developed by lowering the temperature. Rare earth orthoferrites are a kind of effective medium in the THz range and exhibit the signature of natural metamaterials.

Design of mechanical metamaterials with a negative Poisson's ratio (NPR), known as auxetics, is of great importance in the development of flexible electronics and tissue engineering. However, the mechanical performance of conventional auxetic metamaterials is largely hindered by the high porosity and lack of tunability, which restricts their practical engineering applications. Here, this study presents a programmable approach for designing integrated two-phase auxetic composite metamaterials with pore-free structure, robust interfaces, and customized mechanical properties by substituting the vacancy of the auxetic lattices (frame phase) with hydrogel-based soft fillers (matrix phase). Manipulated by two-phase stiffness contrast, integrated composite metamaterials exhibit a functional transition between auxetic and non-auxetic behaviors. Rationally designing Young's modulus ratios in spatial domains endows the programming of composite metamaterials with the desired spatial heterogeneity. Furthermore, the incorporation of temperature-responsive hydrogels to auxetic frames also enbles the development of dynamic programmable composites with the thermo-driven adaptability. As a practical application demonstration, designed programmable composites are used to dynamically tune the phononic bandgaps. The design strategy of integrated two-phase composite metamaterials paves the way for the development of advanced auxetic engineering materials with programmable mechanical properties, providing opportunity for conformal electronic patches, bio-scaffolds, and smart functionality applications.
