What’s the difference between firefly and beetle luciferin?

· Firefly Luciferin:

o Derived specifically from Photinus pyralis and related firefly species.

o It is the prototypical luciferin used in most studies and applications.

· Beetle Luciferin:

o A broader category that includes luciferins from various non-firefly beetles (e.g., click beetles, railroad worms).

o These species belong to different genera but use structurally similar luciferins. Note: Firefly luciferin is a type of beetle luciferin, but in common scientific usage, "beetle luciferin" often refers to non-firefly beetle variants.

Both firefly and beetle luciferins share a core benzothiazole structure.

Scientists may want to know the species from which our Luciferin is derived from. In general there are two kinds of Luciferin that are sold and they are referred to as Synthetic Firefly Luciferin or Synthetic Beetle Luciferin. These molecules are identical and we believe that the primary reason for the apparent distinction is simply for marketing purposes. The structures of these molecules, derived from the manufacturer's literature, are shown below:

Molecular structure of Firefly Potassium Luciferin. (For the Sodium salt of Luciferin, substitute Na for K.)

Molecular structure of Beetle Potassium Luciferin. (For the Sodium salt of Luciferin, substitute Na for K.)
