Engineering ligand-free AgNPs for enhanced electrocatalytic detection of iodide via a dual-signal strategy

Zhenyu Xie,Yaxi Shu,Yujie Xiao,Xiaoyuan Xu,Jiaquan Zhang,Huiyong Wang,Yan Zhao,Juan Du,Baozhan Zheng,Yong Guo

Due to the potential risks to human health posed by radioactive or abnormal levels of iodine, developing portable iodine sensors has received considerable attention. Herein, a novel dual-signal electrochemical sensor is constructed using ligand-free silver nanoparticles (lf-AgNPs) for portable iodide (I − ) detection. After effective removal of ligands, the obtained lf-AgNPs exhibit a significantly enhanced electrochemical response toward I − , with an 8.9-fold higher sensitivity compared to silver nanoparticles/carbon dots (AgNPs/CDs) over a wide concentration range of 0.9 μM to 1.4 mM and a limit of detection of 50 nM. The improvement is attributed to the accelerated electron transfer and increased active sites after ligand removal. Notably, a linear relationship between potential and the logarithm of I − concentration was established, enabling a complementary potentiometric sensing mode and forming the dual-signal strategy for I − detection. Mechanistic studies reveal that the increased active sites of Ag + on AgNPs can facilitate the catalytic oxidation of I − and lower the operating potential, thereby improving the anti-interference ability of the sensor, which can even be used for I − detection in saturated Cl − solution. Furthermore, the practicality of the sensor was demonstrated using screen-printed electrodes modified with lf-AgNPs, which enabled the effective and on-site I − detection in complex real samples (urine, river water, simulated seawater) with high reliability, reproducibility and stability. This work presents a low-cost ligand-removal strategy for constructing I − dual-signal electrochemical sensors with enhanced sensitivity and selectivity.

Positively-charged glycopolymer@AgNPs nanocomposites with exceptionally narrow size distribution and boosted performance against fungi

Hanchen Wei,Rui Xie,Shaoxiong Zhu,Feihu Bi,Linna Pan,Qiao Ye,Dalong Ren,Qingqing Wang,Yulong Wang,Bo Huang,Guang Yang

BACKGROUND Fungal diseases caused by Colletotrichum spp . severely threaten global agricultural productivity. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) offer potent antifungal activity, but their practical use is limited by instability, aggregation, and potential toxicity. This study aims to develop a safe, stable, and highly effective antifungal agent of carbohydrate-derived positively-charged glycopolymer-stabilized AgNPs (PGM@AgNPs) nanocomposites. RESULTS PGM@AgNPs exhibited an exceptionally narrow size distribution (7.41 ± 4.27 nm). The nanocomposite with the highest positive charge density ( m/n = 2:1) achieved almost 100% inhibition of Colletotrichum fructicola spore germination at 8 μg mL −1 , significantly outperforming naked AgNPs in inhibiting mycelial growth and cicada wing penetration. On pears, mangoes, and kiwifruits, PGM@AgNPs reduced anthracnose lesion sizes by 46–70%. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that the antifungal mechanism involves inducing oxidative stress, disrupting cellular integrity, and triggering autophagic cell death. Moreover, PGM@AgNPs showed negligible hemolysis and low cytotoxicity toward L929 cells and zebrafish. CONCLUSION The carbohydrate-derived PGM@AgNPs combine superior stability, enhanced antifungal efficacy, and favorable preliminary biocompatibility. By effectively alleviating anthracnose symptoms in postharvest fruits, these nanocomposites represent a promising, environmentally friendly alternative to chemical pesticides for sustainable agricultural disease management. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.

Highly Sensitive Metronidazole Sensor Based on AgNPs/MWCNTs-Modified Acupuncture Needle Electrode with Molecular Imprinting

Yingjie Liu,Hongying Liu,Yinghui Li,Xiangxiang Peng,Lihua Li,Lingao Yi

In this study, a novel molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor was constructed using an acupuncture needle as the work electrode, enabling highly sensitive quantification of metronidazole. Through electrodeposition, silver nanoparticles and carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes were immobilized onto the acupuncture needle surface, which markedly improved both the electrical conductivity and the electroactive surface area. Subsequently, a molecularly imprinted polymer layer for metronidazole was prepared on the modified electrode surface by cyclic voltammetry electropolymerization using aniline as the functional monomer. The key parameters governing the sensor assembly were systematically tuned to maximize its analytical performance. Electrode morphology and properties were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and electrochemical techniques. In optimal conditions, the sensor demonstrated a linear detection range of 0.05 to 1000 μM, showing a detection limit of 0.019 μM for metronidazole. The sensor exhibited satisfactory selectivity, successfully eliminating interference from routine inorganic ions and analogous compounds. Moreover, it delivered outstanding repeatability (RSD = 1.77%) and reproducibility (RSD = 3.58%). Practical applicability was validated by detecting MNZ in spiked milk and urine samples, achieving recoveries between 96.10% and 106.23% with RSD below 6.30%. This work presents a rapid and sensitive approach for MNZ monitoring, holding promise for food safety inspection and clinical analysis.

Low-Surface Resistance, High-Sensitivity IPMC Sensors Enabled by Physical Deposition of AgNPs@Au Electrodes

Shu Yu,Zhao Chun,Tang Gangqiang,Zhao Xin,Jiang Mingfei,Zhang Weiwei,Wang Yanjie

Ionic polymer–metal composite (IPMC) integrates ionic conductivity and flexibility, exhibiting great application potential in wearable devices, bionic robots, microfluidic chips and other fields. Although the thickness of the electrode layer of IPMC fabricated by traditional physical methods is controllable, it fails to achieve high compactness, strong adhesion and low sheet resistance, resulting in performance far inferior to that of IPMCs prepared by chemical methods. To address the above issues, this work proposes a new strategy with controllable electrode layer thickness based on spraying silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and electroplating (EP), which effectively enables the rapid construction and performance enhancement of the electrode layer. Compared with IPMCs prepared by other processes, the IPMC with sprayed AgNPs@Au electrodes shows advantages of low sheet resistance (∼0.115 Ω/□) and high sensitivity (∼8.475 mV/cm –1 ). Meanwhile, it maintains high stability after 1000 cyclic bends or immersion in HCl for corrosion, further demonstrating the potential application of IPMCs prepared by this process in flexible wearable sensors.

Robust PI composites with high-connected AgNPs for multifunctional electromagnetic interference shielding in harsh environment

Xiaoyuan Zhang,Yuqi Yang,Gui Yang,Fengmei Su,Youxin Ji,Chuntai Liu

Durable and multifunctional electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials have garnered significant attention due to their growing application demands. However, achieving optimal EMI shielding performance remains challenging, primarily due to the inherent interfacial resistance among conductive fillers. In this study, a novel polyimide@silver-sintered (PI@Ag–S) nanofiber composite was developed through in situ anchoring and low-temperature sintering of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) on electrospun PI nanofibers. The sintering process created a highly interconnected AgNPs layer, significantly reducing the electrical resistance and enhancing the electrical conductivity from 49 S/cm to an exceptional 154 S/cm. The resulting PI@Ag–S nanofiber composite demonstrated outstanding EMI shielding effectiveness (86.7 dB), and a remarkable SSE/t value of 14985 dB cm 2  g −1 , alongside excellent in-plane thermal conductivity (2.6011 W/(m⋅K)). Additionally, the composite showcased superior electrical heating performance, enabling effective defogging and de-icing operations at a low voltage of 1.5 V. Notably, the composite, protected by an ultrathin 8 μm PI coating, exhibited exceptional durability, including resistance to extreme temperatures, strong acid and alkali corrosion, and flame-retardant properties. These attributes make the flexible PI@Ag–S nanofiber composite a promising candidate for advanced EMI shielding and thermal management applications, particularly in harsh environments.

High-performance AgNPs/ITO SERS platform for in-situ trace Thiram monitoring in agricultural products

Yingying Wang,Jianyun Zhang,Xinglong Zhang,Yingxuan Liu,Xiaoshan Huang,Zhaolei Ba,Naiqiang Yin,Jing Yu,Chundong Liu

The detection of trace thiram is critically important due to its environmental persistence and biotoxicity. Conventional pesticide residue analysis faces fundamental limitations in sensitivity and accuracy due to low analyte recovery efficiency during sampling, making surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy an ideal solution for trace thiram monitoring. In this study, we developed a high-performance SERS substrate based on in-situ synthesized silver nanoparticle-decorated indium tin oxide (AgNPs/ITO) glass, fabricated via cyclic voltammetry electrochemical deposition. The substrate demonstrated exceptional sensitivity for standard probe molecules such as R6G, achieving an enhancement factor (EF) of up to 8.62 × 10 6 with excellent signal uniformity and universality. For pesticide detection, the substrate exhibited a remarkably low LOD of 0.55 μg/L for thiram and enabled effective in-situ identification of thiram residues on vegetable leaf surfaces, demonstrating robust capability for practical pesticide residue analysis.

Selective SERS detection of dopamine in human urine using catechol oxidase-mimicking AgNPs@MOF-818

Shuojiang Liu,Gongke Li,Yuling Hu

The integration of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and nanozymes has proven to be a highly effective strategy in bioanalytical applications, owing to its superior capabilities in signal transduction and amplification. Nevertheless, clinical applications still face obstacles, particularly in achieving sufficient selectivity. In this work, we have presented a SERS strategy for the selective detection of dopamine in human urine with MOF-818 which exhibits selective catechol oxidase-like activities. AgNPs@MOF-818 catalyze the oxidation of o -phenylenediamine (OPD) to diaminobenzazine (DAP) molecules, when dopamine (DA) is present, the oxidation of OPD is inhibited while DA is catalyzed into o -quinones, thereby suppressing the SERS signal intensity. An indirect SERS detection strategy of dopamine with high sensitivity and selectivity was established. The catechol oxidase-like activity of MOF-818 provides ideal selectivity to dopamine, while the OPD-dopamine catalytic system induces significant changes in SERS intensity. The detection protocol was subsequently optimized to achieve high sensitivity for dopamine, yielding a linear response range of 0.1–30 μmol/L and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.04 μmol/L. The method was successfully applied to the quantitative analysis of dopamine in human urine samples, demonstrating excellent recovery rates and minimal relative error in comparison with results obtained by commercial dopamine ELISA kit. This strategy presents a cost-effective, efficient, and accurate approach for dopamine detection while delivering insights into the integration of selective multifunctional nanozymes with sensitive SERS technique.

An electrochemical aptasensor for detection of Helicobacter pylori based on AuNPs and AgNPs-GO nanoparticles

Xiaojuan You,Mingyi Shao,Huadong Wang,Rui Zhu,Xinwei Liu,Lei Dong,Yuesheng Gong,Yongwei Li

Helicobacter pylori is one of the main causes of gastritis and gastric ulcer. Early detection of H. pylori is of great significance for the prevention of gastric cancer. Herein, a sensitive electrochemical aptasensor using AgNPs-GO as redox probes was established for the specific detection of H. pylori in blood serum and stool samples. Firstly, AgNPs-GO nanocomposites were obtained by in-situ reduction of AgNPs on graphene oxide (GO) surface with glucose as reducing agent, in which AgNPs showed good biocompatibility and chemical stability, as well as redox property, and GO provided a large surface area to assemble a large number of AgNPs. Subsequently, the electrodeposition of AuNPs further improved the conductivity of the aptasensor. Additionally, the streptavidin was introduced into the aptasensor to effectively bind the biotin-modified aptamers. In this way, aptamers could be tethered to the surface through SA-biotin linkage, and H. pylori was selectivly binded by the aptamers subsequently. Under optimal conditions, the aptasensor could detect H. pylori in a wide concentration range (101 CFU mL−1–108 CFU mL−1) with a low detection limit of 3 CFU mL−1. What’s more, the developed method showed excellent performance in practical application, which provided a promising possibility for the detection of other pathogens in clinical diagnosis.

Electrochemical Biosensor Based on Ultrathin 2D CN-rGO@AgNPs for ROS Detection in Leukemia Cells

Mingxuan Huang,Huafeng Wang,Shicong Gui,Chujia Xu,Yi Chen,Shaohua Hu,Yubo Li

Accurate monitoring of ROS levels is essential for oxidative stress (OS) management, but their low concentration and instability pose significant detection challenges. Here, we developed a highly sensitive and selective electrochemical biosensor for real-time, micro-volume ROS detection in leukemia cells. The sensor was fabricated using ultrathin g-C₃N₄-rGO (CN-rGO) nanosheet synthesized through a calcination and hydrothermal approach. These nanosheets were deposited onto a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPE) and further modified with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to construct a CN-rGO@AgNPs/SPE biosensor. The porous nanostructure significantly enhanced the catalytic surface area and electron transfer efficiency, achieving high sensitivities towards H₂O₂ and O₂·⁻ detection. Using a window titration platform, the sensor detected ROS in 0.1 mL lysates of leukemia cell lines (U-937, THP-1, and MOLM-13) with concentrations of 7.38 ± 4.81 μM, 11.74 ± 0.985 μM, 19.84 ± 3.73 μM, respectively. Furthermore, the platform allowed precise monitoring of doxorubicin (DOX)-induced OS, providing valuable insights for guiding leukemia chemotherapy. Additionally, Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation experiments demonstrated the sensor's exceptional real-time performance, enabling dynamic detection of H₂O₂ release kinetics and ROS generation rates at the cellular level. Combining high sensitivity, low detection limits, and micro-volume analysis capabilities, this sensor holds great potential for clinical auxiliary diagnosis and drug efficacy assessment in leukemia research.

An Integrated Anti-Fouling and Anti-Corrosion Coating Enabled by rGO/AgNPs and Amphiphilic Networks

Shu Tian,Jinli Zhang,Shuan Liu,Jingyu Li,Jibin Pu,Yugang Hao,Guobing Ying,Qunji Xue,Guangming Lu

Marine corrosion and biofouling are challenges that affect marine industrial equipment, and protecting equipment with functional coatings is a simple and effective approach. However, it is extremely difficult to combine anti-corrosion and anti-fouling properties in a single coating. In this work, we combine reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with a hydrophilic polymer in a bio-based silicone–epoxy resin to create a coating with both anti-fouling and anti-corrosion properties. The excellent anti-fouling performance of the coating results from a ternary synergistic mechanism involving fouling release, contact inhibition, and a hydration effect, while the outstanding anti-corrosion performance is provided by a ternary synergistic anti-corrosion mechanism that includes a dense interpenetrating network (IPN) structure, a barrier effect, and passivation. The results show that the obtained coating possesses superior anti-fouling activity against protein, bacteria, algae, and other marine organisms, as well as excellent anti-corrosion and certain self-healing properties due to its dynamic cross-linked network of rGO/AgNPs and the hydrophilic polymer. This work provides an anti-corrosion and anti-fouling integrated coating for marine industrial equipment.

AgNPs-immobilized carbon sphere from thiol-modified cellulose nanocrystal for enhancing antibacterial property of paper

Yanan Huang,Jihai Cai,Zhengguo Wu,Yuxuan Kuang,Jiwen Luo

Although silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have the effective antibacterial property, its application was limited by the accumulated toxicity. It was necessary to develop a carrier material to immobilize AgNPs. In this study, for the first time, thiol-modified carbon spheres (TMCS) were synthesized by hydrothermal method, which was used to immobilize AgNPs. It effectively solved the problem of cumulative toxicity. Thiol-modified carbon spheres loaded with silver nanoparticles (TMCS@Ag) were then blended with pulp fibers to prepare antimicrobial composite paper. The addition of TMCS@Ag changes the internal microstructure of the paper, improves its mechanical properties and thermal stability, and at the same time reduces solubility and swelling, which is conducive to use and preservation. It is worth noting that due to the immobilization of TMCS and the wrapping effect of paper fibers, the cumulative release of Ag + in the composite paper reached only 5.15 % on the 14th day, and the cell survival rate was >95 % after co-culture, which proves that the release rate was controlled and the cumulative toxicity of AgNPs was effectively reduced. Nevertheless, the composite paper still has good antimicrobial properties against E. coli and S. aureus . Therefore, this study provides a new strategy for the safe application of antibacterial paper in food preservation, medical and health fields.
