Fe-MXene catalyst featuring Ti/O dual vacancies and multiple active sites was directional designed and synthesized via Molten Salt Self-Assemble, which could realize 96.73% degradation and 77.45% mineralization to 20 mg/L benzotriazole (BTA) within 20 min with amendment of 0.5 g/L Fe-MXene and 15 mg/L O 3 at pH 7.0. The degradation rate attained 0.1836 min −1 with 2.6 times enhancement compared to single O 3 . This highly efficient degradation was ascribed to synergetic effects from 55.92% hydroxyl radicals (•OH), 28.3% superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ), and 9.24% singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). These approximately fivefold •OH and threefold •O 2 − active species generation were attributed to superior catalytic activity from Fe-MXene with multivalent redox couples (Fe (II)/Fe (III), Ti (III)/Ti (IV)) and Ti O double vacancies, which enhanced O 3 and electron transport. Fe-Mxene catalyst efficiency maintained over 96% after 5 recycle. This efficient and stable degradation mechanism is mainly driven by Ti O double vacancies, which accelerated direct adsorption O 3 conversion to •O 2 − and indirect chemical generation •OH driven by Fe/Ti electron transfer acceleration. This generation of multiple oxidizing active species accelerated three types of ring-opening behaviors for BTA from hydroxy substitution on benzene ring, oxidation ring-opening of triazole ring, and assistive double bond rupture driven by non-radical pathway. This rapid benzene ring-open induced ecotoxicity reduction, while triazole ring degradation triggered ecotoxicity increase. The extensive application of Fe-MXene catalyst demonstrated that the highly efficient and selective characteristics to refractory coal chemical wastewater containing toxic benzene rings and azole rings.

The chemical activation method has been widely applied for the in-situ generation of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), enabling effective facilitate environmental remediation and pollution control. However, developing self-Fenton catalysts with both high catalytic activity and good stability still poses significant challenges. In this study, a ternary ZVI-Mn/La 100 catalyst featuring a core-shell chain architecture was synthesized by a one-step method, and an environmentally friendly self-Fenton system was constructed for the efficient degradation of enrofloxacin (ENR). Compared with the ZVI-Mn catalyst, the removal efficiency of ENR by the ZVI-Mn/La 100 catalyst increases by 20.8%. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) analyses indicate that La doping significantly promotes the cyclic regeneration of low-valent manganese and induces the formation of oxygen vacancies. Continuous flow experiments show that the catalyst maintains a high ENR removal efficiency of 88.1% over an 8 h operation, demonstrating its excellent stability and promising engineering application prospects. This work presents a novel strategy for designing highly efficient and stable self-Fenton catalysts, offering significant implications for reducing wastewater treatment costs and improving overall treatment efficiency.

Designing and constructing heterojunctions has emerged as a pivotal strategy for improving the photocatalytic efficiency of semiconductors. In this study, we report the controlled synthesis of an Au/Zn3In2S6Schottky junction through a combination of hydrothermal and in situ photodeposition methods. The structural, morphological, and photoelectrochemical properties of the catalyst were meticulously characterized using a suite of techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoelectrochemical (PEC) measurements, and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The optimized 3% Au/Zn3In2S6composite exhibited a remarkable enhancement in both photocatalytic activity and stability, achieving a 90.4% removal of bisphenol A (BPA) under UV–visible light irradiation within 100 min. The corresponding first-order reaction rate constant was approximately 1.366 h−1, nearly 4.37 times greater than that of the pristine Zn3In2S6. This substantial improvement can be attributed to several key factors, including increased BPA adsorption, enhanced light absorption, and the efficient charge separation facilitated by the Au/Zn3In2S6heterojunction. Photogenerated holes, superoxide radicals, and hydroxyl radicals were identified as the primary reactive species responsible for the BPA degradation. This work highlights the potential of metal-modified semiconductors for advanced photocatalytic applications, offering insights into the design of highly efficient materials for environmental remediation.

A mesoporous N-doped carbon bearing atomically dispersed Fe (Fe 1 -N-Cv) was created that uniquely couples carbon-vacancy and pore engineering to switch the electron spin state of highly accessible Fe sites from low-spin (t 2 g 5 e g 0 ) to high-spin (t 2g 3 e g 2 ), thereby unlocking superior Fenton-like activity. The material was synthesized by pyrolyzing Fe-encapsulated ZIFs under negative pressure, whereby the built-in pressure gradient simultaneously enlarged pores and generated carbon vacancies. Fe 1 -N-Cv degrades pollutants 3.89-fold faster than conventional Fe 1 -N-C, maintains > 99 % tetracycline removal and > 95 % mineralization during 240 min of continuous flow operation, operates over a pH range of 3.0–9.0, and shows stable recyclability and strong resistance to coexisting matrix constituents. Mechanistic analysis identifies a non-radical regime dominated by singlet oxygen, assisted by high-valent Fe-oxo and electron-transfer pathways, while DFT calculations show that carbon defects accelerate interfacial charge transfer and lower the free-energy barrier for PMS activation. Synergistic engineering of carbon vacancies and pores thus emerges as a powerful lever to modulate both the geometric accessibility and electronic spin state of single-atom Fe centers, directly translating into markedly enhanced Fenton-like performance. This strategy offers a promising approach for boosting single-atom-catalyst activity and robustness, advancing their practical deployment in continuous environmental remediation technologies.

Bisphenol A (BPA), a widespread endocrine-disrupting compound, necessitates efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for its degradation. Conventional carbon-based catalysts frequently exhibit limited efficiency, poor stability, and potential environmental risks. Bamboo-derived porous carbon material (BCM) and bamboo-derived porous carbon material loaded with Fe (BCM-Fe) serve as effective catalysts for activating PMS to degrade BPA. The BCM/PMS system achieved a BPA removal efficiency of 94.44 % within 150 minutes, while the BCM-Fe/PMS system attained 97.8 %. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis identified non-radical singlet oxygen (¹O₂) as the dominant reactive species. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that atomically dispersed Fe species on BCM-Fe significantly enhanced PMS adsorption energy and activation kinetics compared to BCM. Both catalysts exhibited excellent reusability, confirming their potential as practical and sustainable catalysts. This study provides fundamental insights for designing efficient, environmentally benign carbon-based catalysts for advanced oxidation processes.

Metal-free carbon-based nanomaterials hold great potential for imaging-guided cancer therapy. In this work, we synthesized carbon quantum dots embedded graphitic carbon nitride nanofibers (GCN-CQD) via a facile one-pot solvothermal approach for fluorescent imaging and combined cancer therapy. Embedded CQDs impact excitation-dependent-tunable and upconverted fluorescence to the nanofibers, establishing them as robust optical contrast agents suitable for multicolor confocal imaging. Within the tumor microenvironment (TME), GCN-CQD could catalyze hydrogen peroxide decomposition to generate hydroxyl radical (·OH) enabling chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Furthermore, GCN-CQD efficiently adsorb near-infrared (NIR) light, converting it locally into heat for photothermal therapy (PTT) while simultaneously generating singlet oxygen (1O2) to drive photodynamic therapy (PDT), collectively inducing cells death. This work offers novel perspectives for developing multimodal combination therapy approaches utilizing metal-free carbon-based nanoplatforms.

Pyroptosis resulted from photodynamic therapy (PDT) plays a crucial role in triggering photoimmunotherapy (PIT). However, visible light-triggered PDT may rise phototoxicity, with low penetration into biological tissues. Crucially, the efficacy of PDT in eliciting pyroptosis remains suboptimal. To address these formidable challenges, we developed a O 2 -supplementing photosensitizer AuNCs@TAT that could efficiently induce pyroptosis upon irradiation with second near-infrared (NIR-II) light in hypoxic tumor microenvironment (TME). Replacing GSH with TAT resulted in a gold nanocluster AuNCs@TAT. The ratio of Au (I) to Au (0) shifted from 1: 0.26 in pristine AuNCs to 1: 1.21 in AuNCs@TAT, which contributed to enhanced catalytic activity of AuNCs@TAT. The superior catalase-like activity of AuNCs@TAT produced 1.9-fold higher O 2 than AuNCs. This O 2 self-supplying capability of AuNCs@TAT not only relieved hypoxic condition in TME but also significantly enhanced the efficiency of AuNCs@TAT to induce pyroptosis upon 1064 nm light irradiation. Western blotting indicated both remarkable upregulation of cleft Caspase-3 and GSDME-N, suggesting GSDME mediated pyroptosis. Further, release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) triggered a strong systematic immune response and reprogrammed the immunosuppressive microenvironment into an immunostimulatory state, which led to a significant suppress of tumor metastasis in mice. Overall, this work sets the stage for future advancements in the design of NIR-II photosensitizer with O 2 -supplementing capability and therefore offers an innovative framework and solid foundation for tumor PIT.

Organic dye pollutants have posed a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ), as a metal-free photocatalyst with broad application potential, has been widely explored for the degradation of environmental pollutants. However, its practical efficiency is severely limited by a low specific surface area and a high recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Furthermore, its performance is highly sensitive to synthesis parameters such as method, temperature, and precursor ratio. To address this, this study developed a multilayer perceptron-artificial neural network (MLP-ANN) model to quantify parameter impacts on Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation rate, integrating four synthesis methods (template-free, soft/hard/self-template), material characterization, and mechanistic analysis. MLP-ANN (R 2 =0.9774, outperforming random forest R 2 =0.563) identified melamine (FI=0.33), urea (FI=0.19), and silica template (FI=0.11) as key factors (for porous structure) and catalyst concentration (FI=0.17, increasing active sites) as dominant in reactions. Guided by the model, self-template g-C 3 N 4 (g-C 3 N 4 -SeT) showed optimal performance: k= 0.0613 min −1 , ∼100 % RhB degradation (43.8 times better than template-free g-C 3 N 4 -TF). SEM/TEM confirmed uniform porosity in g-C 3 N 4 -SeT, while UV-Vis DRS and PL showed the enhanced visible-light absorption and suppressed carrier recombination. Superoxide radicals (•O 2 - ) were proved as the main active species. Efficient separation of electron-hole pairs by g-C 3 N 4 -SeT promotes the generation of •O 2 - , thereby accelerating RhB degradation. This work demonstrates the successful integration of machine learning with experimental characterization to optimize both the synthesis strategy and photocatalytic performance of g-C 3 N 4 , establishing a data-driven framework for the rational design of advanced functional catalysts.

Regulating the microenvironment of single-atom catalysts (SACs) is critical for steering ozone (O 3 ) activation toward selective on-demand reactive species generation. While first-shell coordination engineering modulates the center metal activity, it often disrupts the robust Mn-N 4 symmetry and thus compromises structural stability. Here, we developed atomically dispersed Mn-N 4 -S sites (S-MnN 4 ) that feature sulfur doping in the second coordination shell for catalytic ozonation and water pollutant degradation. Second-shell sulfur incorporation subtly elevated the d -band center and increased the spin state of Mn from low to intermediate, enhancing O 3 adsorption, dissociation and the preferred generation of high-valent Mn(IV)=O species. Consequently, S-MnN 4 achieved a 2.7-fold higher ozone utilization efficiency and double the turnover frequency versus pristine MnN 4 which catalyzed O 3 to primarily yield singlet oxygen. A continuous-flow system using a S-MnN 4 -packed column reactor demonstrated efficient chemical oxygen demand removal and exceptional durability over 170 h for the treatment of real-world wastewater. This work highlights second-shell coordination engineering as a feasible approach to overcome SAC activity-stability trade-off, advancing rational SAC design toward a sustainable environmental remediation.

The photocatalytic coupling of selective phenylcarbinol oxidation with hydrogen evolution has attracted considerable attention as a promising dual-functional reaction system. Herein, a lattice-matched 2D/3D NiS/CdIn 2 S 4 (NiS/CIS) Schottky heterojunction is rationally designed for efficient dual-functional photocatalysis under visible light. Structural analyses confirm the uniform deposition of NiS nanosheets on octahedral CIS with a lattice mismatch below 5%, ensuring coherent interfacial contact. The optimal 3% NiS/CIS composite exhibits exceptional hydrogen and benzaldehyde production rates of 2636.4 and 2717.6 μmol g −1 h −1 , respectively—representing enhancements of 39.7 and 38.0 times over pristine CIS. The catalyst also demonstrates remarkable stability, retaining over >99.0% activity after six cycles. Mechanistic studies reveal that the Schottky junction facilitates spatial separation of photogenerated carriers: electrons migrate to NiS, prolonging charge carrier lifetimes and lowering the hydrogen evolution overpotential, while holes accumulate on CIS that facilitated phenylcarbinol adsorption to drive selective phenylcarbinol oxidation via a carbon-radical pathway. This work provides a viable approach for designing efficient bifunctional photocatalysts through lattice-matched interface engineering.

Electron transfer coupled to molecular O 2 activation drives ROS formation and underpins pollutant removal processes. Yet in heterogeneous matrices electron transfer is typically confined to nano-micrometer distances, which limits ROS efficacy. Here, we show that black carbon (BC) can bridge spatial gaps between electron source and O 2 , enabling centimeter-scale ROS generation. Using a solidified agarose reactor that mimics restricted transport, BC mediated electron transfer from zero-valent iron (ZVI) to distal zones, producing hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) up to 18 mm from the ZVI source within 30-day experimental period; H 2 O 2 reached 28.6 ± 3.6 µM and • OH reached 103.3 ± 3.2 nM with rice-straw BC (300 °C) at 3 mm and then plateaued beyond 12 mm. Mechanistic analyses revealed that surface redox-active functionalities, rather than the polyaromatic conductive backbone, control BC’s electron-shuttling performance. Consistent with this mechanism, low-temperature BCs (≤500 °C), which retain more oxygenated surface moieties, gave up to 61.0-fold higher ROS yields than high-temperature (900 °C) samples. Furthermore, chemical oxidation of high-temperature BC reinstated these oxygenated groups and increased its electron-accepting and -donating capacities (to as high as 2.81 mmol e⁻ g -1 and 1.59 mmol e⁻ g -1 ), producing corresponding rises in ROS output. Because ROS were generated over an expanded spatial region, BC/ZVI composites accelerated degradation rates of phenol, bisphenol A, and diuron by 5.4–9.8-fold. Overall, BC functions as an effective electron shuttle that extends interfacial redox reactivity across centimeter scales, offering a sustainable approach to overcome electron-transport limitations in environmental remediation.

Ferrate (Fe(VI)) activation by Mn(II) has been proven as a powerful technology due to the high catalytic activity of Mn(II) and the generation of multiple intermediates. However, the reactivity and stability of these intermediates greatly differ, thus necessitating the precise regulation of redox pathways towards the generation of the most desirable intermediates. In this study, we utilized ligand engineering to finely tune the redox pathways between Fe(VI) and Mn(II). Mn(II) complexing with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and nitrotriacetic acid (NTA) switched the redox pathways from generating Mn(IV) to more robust intermediates and enhanced the decontamination ability of Fe(VI). Ligand-to-metal charge transfer promoted the electron migration from Mn(II) complexes to Fe(VI), generating Fe(V) and Mn(III) intermediates. Then, complexing regulated the transformation of Mn(III) to generate different reactive species. Specifically, Mn(II)-EDTA activated Fe(VI) through Fe(IV)/Fe(V) and Mn(V), whereas the Fe(VI)-Mn(II)-NTA system relied on Mn(VII). Owing to the weaker chelating effect of NTA, unstable Mn(III)-NTA was successively oxidized via Mn(V) to Mn(VII). In contrast, the stronger stability of EDTA suppressed the excessive oxidation of Mn(V)-EDTA, boosting pollutant interception of reactive species. Accordingly, the Fe(VI)-Mn(II)-EDTA process delivered stronger activation and wider applicability, diminishing contaminant toxicity and resisting background interference. This study provides valuable insights into Fe(VI) activation induced by transition metal complexes and serves as a reference for selecting efficient strategies to avoid excessive consumption of oxidative capacity.
