Comparative metabolic profiling of root, leaf, fruit, and stem tissues of Panax notoginseng

Rui Shi,Bingjie Xiong,Shu He,Can Liu,Jiftah Ben-Asher,Abraham Rami Horowitz,Shu Wang,Xiahong He

Panax notoginseng is highly used in traditional Chinese medicine, and its root is valued for ginsenoside contents. However, evidence suggests that other plant parts such as fruit, leaves, and stem are also potential sources of bioactive compounds. Therefore, this study aimed at providing insight into the differential accumulation of metabolites in fruit, leaf, root, and stem tissues collected from P. notoginseng. A total of 808 metabolites from 11 major metabolite classes were identified. Furthermore, 32 Ginsenosides with six conserved Ginsenosides Rg1, Rf, St-3, R1, Ro, Rc, and five conserved notoginsenosides R1, K, M, E, Rb1, were identified with differential accumulation in fruit, leaf, stem, and root tissues. Several other metabolites known for their potential roles in human health were also identified as differentially accumulated in the tissues. Furthermore, the accumulation pattern of ginsenosides in different tissues is highly suggestive of utilizing fruit, leaf, and stem tissues along with roots for value addition of P. notoginseng.

Surface-Modified CeO2-Octahedron-Supported Pt Nanoparticles as Ethylene Scavengers for Fruit Preservation

Haiying Wei,Licheng Li,Tingwei Zhang,Farzad Seidi,Qiang Chen,Huining Xiao

Catalytic oxidation of ethylene associated with the preservation of fruits and vegetables (F&V) at low temperatures remains challenging. To address this issue, CeO2-octahedron-supported Pt catalysts were synthesized and modified by capacitively coupled plasma for efficient catalytic oxidation of C2H4. After the plasma treatment, CeO2 with rich oxygen vacancies was created, which acted as a support to facilitate the regulation of the size and dispersion of Pt nanoparticles. Compared with Pt/pristine CeO2, the Pt/plasma-modified CeO2 catalyst (Pt/CeO2-P) showed significantly higher reactivity. More than 99.9% of ethylene conversion induced by Pt/CeO2-P could be sustained longer than 50 h at 25 °C, and 30 min even at 0 °C. Thus, Pt/CeO2 interface engineering by plasma modification technology is particularly promising for low-temperature catalytic oxidation of ethylene. Moreover, a comprehensive characterization was conducted to elucidate the reaction pathway and oxidation mechanism. From the preservation test using bananas as fruit samples, it was found that Pt/CeO2-P delayed postharvest deterioration and ripening of bananas due to the excellent ethylene scavenging effect created by the catalyst, thus demonstrating the great potential applications in F&V preservation.

Nitric oxide is involved in melatonin-induced cold tolerance in postharvest litchi fruit

Jialiang Liu,Wanli Zhang,Meijiao Hu,Yonggui Pan,Yueming Jiang,Zhengke Zhang,Guoxiang Jiang

Previous studies indicate that melatonin , as an important bioactive molecule, appreciably improves cold tolerance in postharvest litchi fruit. However, whether other signaling molecules are involved in melatonin-induced cold tolerance in litchi fruit has not been clarified. In this study, the effect of the interplay between melatonin and nitric oxide (NO) on chilling stress tolerance in relation to redox homeostasis in litchi fruit was investigated. In the first experiment, exogenous applications of melatonin and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) showed similar efficacy in decelerating the development of chilling injury (CI), as indicated by lower CI index and higher retention of pericarp redness in litchi fruit during refrigeration, whereas the opposite effect was found with NO scavenger 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)− 4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (cPTIO). The ameliorating effect of melatonin on CI was evidently impaired under cotreatment with melatonin and cPTIO (melatonin + cPTIO). In the second experiment, the biochemical response of litchi fruit to melatonin and melatonin + cPTIO during cold storage was analyzed. The results exhibited that melatonin triggered NO accumulation by activating nitrate reductase (NR) and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in refrigerated litchi fruit. Melatonin-induced NO accumulation was reduced under treatment with melatonin + cPTIO, but this combined treatment did not affect the NR and NOS activities when compared to melatonin alone. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) in melatonin-treated fruit were markedly quenched by activating antioxidant enzymes and increasing antioxidant metabolite contents, thus alleviating membrane lipid peroxidation and maintaining membrane integrity. Melatonin also led to increased expression of oxidized protein repair-related genes, including LcMsrA1, LcMsrA2 , LcMsrB1 , LcMsB2 , LcTrx2 and LcNTR1. Moreover, an enhanced level of protein S -nitrosylation was observed in fruit upon melatonin treatment. However, the above physiological effect associated with improved fruit cold tolerance afforded by melatonin was partially counteracted by cPTIO. The results suggest that endogenous NO could mediate melatonin-induced cold tolerance in litchi fruit via regulation of redox status.

Pectin-rich dragon fruit peel extracts: An environmentally friendly emulsifier of natural origin

Yiyan Liu,Hongru Chen,Shufan Chen,Yuehan Zhang,Jingkai Zhang,Xiaoqi Zhu,Wenxuan Li,Jialu Liu,Yang Jiang,Dapeng Li

Pectin extraction is generally an energy-intensive industrial process, while on the other hand their extraction methods vary from different sources. Starting with that perspective, pectin (WSP) containing ultra-low degree of methylation (31.08 ± 1.27%) from dragon fruit peel (DFP) was extracted by using pure water at room temperature. WSP, dominant in DFP (17.13 ± 1.01%), showed both a high molecular weight and a wide molecular weight distribution, while the yield of the rest acid-soluble pectin (HAP) from DFP residue was only 5.22 ± 0.76%. Furthermore, WSP can stabilize emulsions over a wide range of concentrations and oil phases, especially HIPE. Therefore, the hypothesis was verified that the pectin-rich extract from dragon fruit peel with excellent emulsifying properties could be simply extracted by pure water. This environmentally-friendly and energy-saving extraction method provides a new insight to increase the additional value of dragon fruit peel produced in food processing.

Gelatin/carboxymethylcellulose composite film combined with photodynamic antibacterial: New prospect for fruit preservation

Yingbin Lv,Peiyuan Li,Lei Cen,Fangzhou Wen,Rixiang Su,Jinyun Cai,Jingdi Chen,Wei Su

Plastic packaging causes environmental pollution, and the development of simple and effective biodegradable active packaging remains a challenge. In this study, gelatin (G) and sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) were used as film materials, with the addition of curcumin (Cur), a photosensitive substance, to investigate the changes in the physical and chemical properties of the film and its application in fruit preservation. The results demonstrated that Cur was compatible with the film. With the addition of Cur, the thickness of the film increased up to 1.3 times, while the moisture content was reduced to 12.10 %. The tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (EAB) of the film can reach 8.84 MPa and 19.33 %, respectively. The photodynamic antibacterial experiment revealed that the film containing 0.5 % Cur exhibited the highest antibacterial rate, reaching 99.99 % against Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and 95 % against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). During storage, the grapes remained unspoiled for up to 9 days after being phototreated with the film and the microbial content of the skin was much lower than that of the control group. In addition, Cur provided antioxidant activity for the film, with a scavenging activity of 39.54 % against the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrind radical (DPPH). Bananas exposed to the film-forming solution for a short period of time remained fresh for up to 6 days. During preservation, the weight of the treated bananas decreased more slowly than that of the control group. In addition, the activity of SOD on the 7th day was approximately 20 U/g higher than that of the control group, which helped to reduce oxidative stress during banana preservation. In summary, G-CMC/Cur film is an optional fruit-cling film that can be used in food packaging.

Self-powered round-the-clock spectral sensing towards in-situ evaluation of fruit quality

Ruihua Zhang,Yuhan Gong,Maoyuan Yin,Xujun Chen,Longgang Ma,Zhiqiang Zhu,Xinqing Xiao

This work demonstrates a round-the-clock self-powered flexible spectral sensing device(FSSD) enabling in-situ fruit quality monitoring by resolving orchard energy supply limitations through synergistic photovoltaic power and moist-electric generation. This system integrates flexible solar patch (FSP) and flexible moisture-electric generator (FMEG) for hybrid energy harvesting, ensuring continuous operation through the compensation of photovoltaic power by moist-electric generation. The FMEG fabricated using the LiCl concentration-gradient design strategy to construct an ionic hydrogel film in a sandwich configuration which delivers the short-circuit current (Isc) of 0.73 V and short-circuit current density of 67.89 mA cm −2 at 80 % relative humidity. The FSP demonstrates excellent linear current response to illumination intensity from 5 k to 30 k lux, with short-circuit current (Isc) increasing from 12.81 mA to 115.21 mA, while delivering a stabilized Voc of 1.75 V at 30 k lux. The FSSD, which integrates spectral sensors and low-power control chip via flexible electronics technology and is powered by the hybrid energy supply, enables in-situ collection and wireless transmission of spectral data. Furthermore, through embedded partial least squares regression (PLSR) and support vector machine (SVM) machine learning models, it can realize real-time and continuous prediction of fruit quality parameters and evaluation of their ripeness levels. This easily manufacturable, scalable, and cost-effective system integrates autonomous energy harvesting with quality monitoring to construct a closed-loop digital decision-making framework for preharvest monitoring and post-harvest grading, which enables precision harvesting, reduces post-harvest losses, and advances technologies for precision agriculture and agricultural product traceability.

Chitosan-based film with enhanced gas permeability and antimicrobial property for fresh fruit preservation

Nan Cui,Yiyi Li,Haiyu Du,Liwen Liang,Yongqiang Wen,Zhu Zhu

The shelf-life of fruits and vegetables is significantly affected by atmospheric conditions and the microbial contaminations. The use of porous materials for packaging can help regulate the internal atmosphere within packaging. In this study, a chitosan-based film with enhanced gas permeability and antimicrobial properties was developed through the incorporation of polyethyleneimine (PEI)-modified mesoporous silica SBA-15. The mesoporous structure of SBA-15 enhances gas exchange, leading to superior permeability for oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor compared to neat chitosan films. Additionally, the addition of polyethyleneimine (PEI) endows the composite film with remarkable antimicrobial efficacy, effectively inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus and Botrytis cinerea . The composite film also exhibited good transparency, UV-blocking capabilities, and mechanical strength. Preservation tests conducted on mangoes indicated that composite film was capable of regulating the internal atmosphere and delaying the deterioration of the fruit. Furthermore, the films exhibited excellent biodegradability and biocompatibility. Therefore, this composite film with enhanced gas transmission rate and antimicrobial properties presents considerable potential for the preservation of fresh produce.

Sprayable ultra-stable chitosan-based water-in-water emulsion gels for enhanced fruit preservation

Feilin Lin,Wenqi Qin,Kaidi Guo,Jianzhong Jiang

Aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) is widely used in biotechnology owing to their excellent permeability, affinity partitioning, biocompatibility, and mild all-aqueous conditions. However, their extremely low interfacial tension renders them vulnerable to droplet collisions and prone to stratification, resulting in poor stability and low utilization efficiency. Herein, we report an ultra-stable water-in-water ( W /W) emulsion gels derived from an ATPS, using dextran/poly(ethylene glycol) as the template and chitosan (CS) as the emulsifier. The CS molecules were conjugated with 2-furaldehyde (FAL) via imine bonds, enabling the formation of emulsion gels within 2 min. The W /W emulsion gels exhibited no macroscopic phase separation for up to 6 months, and withstood low/high temperatures (−18 °C/70 °C) as well as centrifugation (6000 rpm, for 40 min). They also showed sprayability and excellent physicochemical properties, which effectively alleviated retention and coverage issues by reducing fragmentation and enhancing local pinning and wetting processes. With mangoes used as a model system, microbial proliferation on mango surfaces was significantly inhibited after spraying with the W /W emulsion gels, achieving a 99.8 % antibacterial inhibition rate and reducing mango decay by 46.0 %. This work presents a promising strategy for developing scalable, low-cost, biodegradable, and eco-friendly antibacterial preservation systems.

Chemical Composition and Antifungal Activity of Zanthoxylum armatum Fruit Essential Oil against Phytophthora capsici

Jingjing Yang,Qizhi Wang,Linwei Li,Pirui Li,Min Yin,Shu Xu,Yu Chen,Xu Feng,Bi Wang

Pathogenic plant oomycetes cause devastating damage to fruits and vegetables worldwide. Plant essential oils (EOs) are known to be promising candidates for the development of fungicides. In this study, we isolated twelve EOs fromTetradium ruticarpum,Tetradium daniellii,Tetradium fraxinifolium,Zanthoxylum armatum,Ruta graveolens, andCitrus medicaleaves and fruits. We then investigated their chemical composition and antifungal activity against phytopathogenic oomycetes. Our results demonstrated thatZ. armatumfruit essential oil (ZFO) in particular substantially inhibited the mycelial growth ofPhytophthora capsici. Similarly, ZFO also strongly suppressed spore production and germination ofP. capsici, and the application of ZFO significantly reduced disease symptoms caused byP. capsiciin pepper. Furthermore, results from microscopic and biochemical studies indicated that ZFO damaged the ultrastructure and destroyed the membrane integrity ofP. capsici, leading to the leakage of the cellular contents and ultimately causing cell death. It was concluded that ZFO could enhance the activities of defense-related enzymes in pepper fruits, which may also be responsible for the inhibition of phytophthora disease. Moreover, linalool andD-limonene were proven to be the primary effective components of ZFO. Our results collectively indicate that ZFO could be a potential candidate for the management of disease caused byP. capsici. Keywords:Phytophthora capsici;antifungal activity;Zanthoxylum armatumfruit essential oil;action mechanism

Glucose oxidase-mediated sodium alginate gelation: Equipment-Free detection of glucose in fruit samples

Hao Zhang,Xiuzhu Li,Zheng-Ming Qian,Shengpeng Wang,Feng-Qing Yang

In this study, a paper-based sensor, combined with a visual distance-readout method, was developed to determine glucose in fruit samples based on the glucose oxidase-mediated sodium alginate gelation. The type of filter paper, the concentration of sodium alginate and the enzymatic reaction conditions were systematically investigated. Under optimal conditions, the increase in diffusion diameter showed a good linear relationship with glucose concentration between 1.4–7.0 mM, and the limit of quantification was 1.4 mM. Finally, the applicability of the proposed strategy was successfully verified by measuring glucose concentrations in fruit samples. The results generated by the developed paper-based sensor were in good agreement with the results obtained from a glucose assay kit. The recoveries were 91.8%–99.1%. In short, the present study developed a simple, low-cost and efficient method for assessing fruit quality and for guiding fruit intake for diabetic patients, especially in remote or resource-limited regions.

Melatonin treatment reduces ethylene production and maintains fruit quality in apple during postharvest storage

Jakaria Chowdhury Onik,Su Chit Wai,Ang Li,Qiong Lin,Qianqian Sun,Zhidong Wang,Yuquan Duan

The effects of treatment with melatonin on ripening of ‘Fuji’ apples during storage at 1 °C for 56 d were investigated. The apples were harvested at the commercial ripening stage and treated with 1 mmol L −1 melatonin. Compared with the control, melatonin treated apples had significant reduced ethylene production (28 d–56 d) and weight loss (14 d–56 d) during storage (p < 0.05). Also, the melatonin treatment maintained better apple skin structure throughout storage. The reduced ethylene production was regulated by the decreased expressions of MdACO1, MdACS1, MdAP2.4 and MdERF109 , based on RNA-Seq analysis, which was validated using qRT-PCR analysis. Moreover, the activity of 3 enzymes, including peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), were significantly increased in melatonin treated fruit (p < 0.05). Taken together, this study highlights the inhibitory effects of melatonin in ethylene biosynthesis and factors influencing postharvest quality in apple.

Sustainable gelatin–carbon dot hydrogel coatings for fruit preservation: integrating antioxidant and antibacterial activities

Panyong Wang,Mingna Hu,Huimin Miao,Minghui Zan,Qiannan You,Li Li

To address key challenges in postharvest fruit preservation—namely microbial spoilage, moisture loss, and oxidative degradation—a multifunctional composite coating based on gelatin hydrogel embedded with carbon dots (Gel/CDs) was developed. In this system, the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of CDs were integrated into a hydrophilic and biocompatible hydrogel matrix, forming a protective layer with enhanced surface adhesion and interfacial compatibility. Under ambient storage conditions, the coating significantly delayed spoilage of strawberries and cherry tomatoes, prolonging their shelf life from 4 to 10 days. By integrating antimicrobial activity with intrinsic antioxidant capacity, the Gel/CDs coating demonstrates potential relevance for fruit preservation, including effective microbial control and retention of over 70% of the initial fruit weight. Its edibility and low toxicity confirm the coating's safety and suitability for food preservation, offering a residue-free alternative to chemical preservatives with strong potential for large-scale postharvest application.
