Amino-grafted MOF-based composite membranes for improving Li+/Mg2+ separation performance

Xiaolei Cui,Guodong Kong,Shengchao Wei,Yuchen Cui,Pengyao Yu,Zixi Kang,Hailing Guo

Advanced ion transportation channels aided by charge and suitable aperture play a crucial role in achieving precise separation of ions. Here, we report a MOF composite membrane with electropositive surface and sub-nanometer-sized ion transport channels for efficient Li + /Mg 2+ separation. The membranes were fabricated using MOF “porous monomers” and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) through interfacial polymerization, and subsequently modified with amino-functionalized polyethyleneimine (PEI). The abundant porosity of the MOFs composite membrane includes the inner and the intergranular pores of MOF provided a rapid transport channel for Li + ions, and a superior Li + permeation rate of 0.68 mol m −2 h −1 (a 10 times enhancement compared to the currently leading MOF membranes). Moreover, the improved positively charged surface (from −78 mV to + 4 mV at pH = 7) and reduced mean pore diameter (from 1.13 nm to 0.8 nm) of the membrane caused a remarkable selectivity of 13.2 for Li + /Mg 2+ . The design concept of the above MOFs based membrane provides a novel approach for developing high-quality MOF composite membranes for improving Li + /Mg 2+ separation performance.

Engineered NanoAlum from aluminum turns cold tumor hot for potentiating cancer metalloimmunotherapy

Yingbo Jia,Jing Hu,Chaojie Zhu,Zijing Li,Xinyu Yang,Ruitian Liu,Linghui Zeng,Lingxiao Zhang

The poor cancer immunotherapy outcome has been closely related to immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME), which usually inactivates the antitumor immune cells and leads to immune tolerance. Metalloimmunotherapy by supplementing nutritional metal ions into TME has emerged as a potential strategy to activate the tumor-resident immune cells. Herein, we engineered a magnesium-contained nano-aluminum adjuvant (NanoAlum) through hydrolyzing a mixture of Mg(OH) 2 and Al(OH) 3 , which has highly similar components to commercial Imject Alum. Peritumoral injection of NanoAlum effectively neutralized the acidic TME while releasing Mg 2+ to activate the tumor-resident T cells . Meanwhile, NanoAlum also blocked the autophagy pathway in tumor cells and subsequently induced cell apoptosis . The in vivo studies showed that merely peritumoral injection of NanoAlum successfully inhibited the growth of solid tumors in mice. On this basis, NanoAlum combined with chemical drug methotrexate or immunomodulatory adjuvant CpG further induced potent antigen-specific antitumor immunity. Overall, our study first provides a rational design for engineering tumor-targeted nanomodulator from clinical adjuvants to achieve effective cancer metalloimmunotherapy against solid tumors.

Sustainable and exceptional Li+ /Mg2+selectivity through electrocoagulation enhanced triamino guanidine modified membrane

Bin Liu,Xinyue Cui,Xiaozhen Lu,Xuewu Zhu,Lin Wang,Junyong Zhu

Positively charged polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes with sub-nanopores show promise for lithium extraction from salt-lake brines with high Mg 2+ /Li + ratios. This study introduces the use of triamino guanidine (TG), a highly positively charged molecule, to regulate grafting on monolayer PA membranes, resulting in dual-layer (PEI-TMC-TG) NF membranes. The monolayer PA membranes were created via spin-coating assisted interfacial polymerization between polyethyleneimine (PEI) and tricarbonyl chloride (TMC). The PEI/TMC-TG NF membranes exhibited several advantages over unmodified PEI-TMC NF membranes, including higher positive charge density, narrower pore size distribution, excellent hydrophilicity, and a more porous separation layer microstructure. Experimental results indicated that enhanced Donnan effect, size sieving, and dielectric repulsion within the sub-nanopores contributed to exceptional Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity during filtration of East Taijiner brine (S Li + /Mg 2+  = 64.5). Furthermore, the TG hydrophilic layer significantly improved water permeability (15.4 LMH/bar) and long-term stability. To reduce membrane fouling in the charge-positive NF process by removing organic matter from complex salt lake brine, we explored electrocoagulation as a pre-treatment method and identified optimal conditions for the EC-NF process. This strategy maximizes sustainable lithium recovery from brine in an economically viable green manner while enhancing the efficiency of NF membranes for lithium extraction from salt lakes.

Facile fabrication of high-strength biocomposite through Mg2+-enhanced bonding in bamboo fiber

Shengbo Ge,Guiyang Zheng,Yang Shi,Zhongfeng Zhang,Abdullatif Jazzar,Ximin He,Saddick Donkor,Zhanhu Guo,Ding Wang,Ben Bin Xu

The emerging interests in high-performance biocomposites grows significantly driven by their superior environmental sustainability. This study proposes a unique biocomposite strategy by implementing an acetic and ball-milled treatment to disrupt the bamboo cell wall structure, thereby facilitating further processing by effectively increasing the active sites and specific surface area in the bamboo fiber. The fibers are subsequently carboxymethylated to introduce carboxyl groups which facilitate physical bonding between the fibers and Mg 2+ ions that are added to the system. These ions form metal-coordination bonds with the carboxyl groups, acting as ion bridges that significantly strengthen the inter-fiber bonding. The resulted biocomposite exhibits impressive mechanical properties, including a high tensile strength (94.24 MPa) and flexural strength (104.14 MPa), not only that, changes in elastic modulus also highlight changes in fiber bonding, the flexural modulus is 21.29 GPa and the tensile modulus is 7.01 GPa. Moreover, it maintains a low water uptake capacity of only 6.8 % despite being submerged for 12 h. The thermal conductivity and fire retardancy have also been improved. The synergic bonding ability between the cellulose and lignin in the fibers, coupled with the glue-free thermoforming process, enhances the material performance and renders it fully recyclable, thus reducing environmental pollution and providing cost-effective engineering materials to society.

Fluorine-Free Ion-Selective Membrane with Enhanced Mg2+ Transport for Mg-Organic Batteries

Wen Ren,Migo Szeman Ng,Ye Zhang,Alae Eddine Lakraychi,Yanliang Liang,Dawei Feng,Michelle Lehmann,Guang Yang,Judith Jeevarajan,Wan Si Tang,Yan Yao

Magnesium batteries offer a safer alternative for next-generation battery technology due to their insusceptibility to dendrite deposition. Selective membranes tailored for magnesium-ion conduction will unlock further technological advancement. Herein, we demonstrate fluorine-free magnesiated sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (Mg-SPEEK) selective membranes capable of facilitating magnesium-ion conduction while effectively rejecting soluble organic species. These membranes demonstrate a reversible Mg plating and stripping Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 85.4% and an ionic conductivity of 3.3 × 10–4 S cm–1 at room temperature, surpassing those for a Mg-Nafion selective membrane. Theoretical density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that SPEEK possesses more localized charge centers along its backbone compared with Nafion, potentially facilitating enhanced ion conduction. Full cells assembled with Mg-SPEEK coupled with the organic cathode pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (PTO) and Mg metal demonstrated significantly improved capacity retention as compared to those assembled with conventional nonselective separators.

Swelling-thermal crosslinking engineered polyamide nanofiltration membranes for high-performance Mg2+/Li+ separation

Yu Tang,Shengde Dong,Ping Li,Ying Cheng,Wenjie Liu,Chuanjiang Cheng,Yanxia Sun,Qi Xu,Chunxi Hai,Yuan Zhou

Lithium extraction from hypersaline brines is increasingly important for sustainable energy technologies. Nanofiltration membranes leverage synergistic size exclusion and Donnan effects for Mg 2+ /Li⁺ separation under high-salinity conditions. However, a persistent flux-selectivity dilemma remains, because the highly crosslinked and compact polyamide selective layers required for high Mg 2+ rejection often introduce substantial mass-transfer resistance and limit water flux. Here, we develop a methanol swelling followed by thermal curing strategy to regulate the polyamide network architecture. Swelling promotes structural relaxation and pathway opening, whereas post-curing stabilizes the reconfigured network and narrows the pore-size distribution to strengthen size-sieving. The resulting membrane (PEI-TMC-M h ) delivers a permeation flux of 56.65 L·m −2 ·h −1 in 2000 ppm MgCl 2 while maintaining Mg 2+ rejection above 98%. In simulated brine with Mg 2+ /Li + = 50, a separation factor (S Li/Mg ) of 34.03 is achieved. Two-stage nanofiltration of real salt-lake brine (Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio 55) yields a Li + -enriched solution containing 26.9 mg·L −1 Li + with a reduced Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio of 0.65. This work provides a simple post-treatment route to improve the flux–selectivity balance for brine-based lithium extraction.

Cellulose Acetate Membranes with a Low COF Loading for Efficient Li+/Mg2+ Separation

Daojiang Zhu,Shuhong Zhao,Chen Yang,Zheng Liu,Yifan Li,Chang Huang,Yuan Xia,Tingting Xu,Xingya Li,Tongwen Xu

Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) incorporating covalent organic frameworks (COFs) offer a promising strategy to overcome the permeability-selectivity trade-off effect in conventional polymer membranes for ion separation. However, agglomeration of COF fillers often leads to structural defects and performance degradation in MMMs. Herein, we report in situ synthesized CA@COF MMMs by integrating fibrous COF (TpPaCOOH) with cellulose acetate (CA) at a low loading of 1.63 wt%, achieving hydrogen bond-enhanced interfacial compatibility and uniform filler dispersion. In the binary-ion system for Li + /Mg 2+ separation, despite this minimal COF content, the resulting CA@TpPaCOOH membrane exhibits 21-fold and 16-fold enhancements in Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity compared with pristine CA and COF membranes, respectively, reaching a selectivity of ∼51 and a Li + flux of ∼0.3 mol m -2 h -1 . Moreover, the CA@TpPaCOOH membranes demonstrate a scalability with consistent performance across batch-to-batch synthesis and retention of >83.2% selectivity in pilot-scale (900 cm 2 ) preparations. This highly reproducible, low-dosage strategy provides a transformative pathway for efficient lithium recovery from brine.

Crown ether-functionalized nanofiltration membranes with high ions selectivity for Li+/Mg2+ separation

Chi Jiang,Shibo Bai,Jiawang Li,Ming Wang,Yan Zhou,Yingfei Hou

ABSTRACT Extraction of lithium resources from salt lake brines is an effective method to solve the shortage of lithium resources nowadays. However, magnesium-lithium separation has become a critical issue for lithium extraction from salt lakes with high Mg 2+ /Li + ratio, due to the similar ionic characteristics of Li + (0.38 nm), and Mg 2+ (0.43 nm). Herein, a amine monomer containing crown ether group (4'-aminobenzo-15-crown-5-ether (NH 2 -B15C5)) was introduced into the interfacial polymerization (IP) process of piperazine (PIP) and homotrimethylene tricarbonyl chloride (TMC) to prepare polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes with Li + selective transport channels. NH 2 -B15C5 shows good compatibility and selective complexation to Li + , which acts as Li + selective transport channels effectively retaining Mg 2+ and allowing Li + to cross the membrane smoothly, therefore solving the problem of poor lithium-magnesium separation performance of most of the NF membranes currently. Molecular dynamics simulations (MD) also confirmed that NH 2 -B15C5 has a stronger affinity for Li + than for Mg 2+ . The NH 2 -B15C5/PIP-TMC membrane exhibited excellent separation performance and water permeance in simulated salt lake brine (2000 ppm, W Mg/Li =100), where the S Li, Mg and water permeance were 32.2 and 8.22 L·m -2 ·h -1 ·bar -1 . Importantly, the crown ether is introduced into the PA separator layer in the form of covalent bonds, hence showing excellent stability. Overall, an NF membrane with high lithium-magnesium separation performance was designed for the extraction of lithium resources from high Mg 2+ /Li + ratio salt lake brine.

Dual-controlled release of Mg2+/Zn2+ cage system promotes osteointegration in interbody fusion

Shaorong Li,Han Wu,Weijian Wang,Jianshi Song,Liangwei Zhao,Xiuqi Shan,Qiang Yang,Xiaona Du,Wei Zhang

Interbody fusion is a primary surgical procedure for conditions associated with intervertebral disc degeneration and nucleus pulposus herniation. However, osteointegration at the bone-implant interface is often hindered by the limited vascularization within the intervertebral space and the low biological activity of traditional cages. To address this limitation, we developed a composite cage system (Alg-Zn/Lap/Ta) by incorporating laponite (Lap) and alginate (Alg-Zn) with a tantalum (Ta) cage. The results of our experiments demonstrate that the Alg-Zn/Lap/Ta cage exhibits suitable physicochemical properties and excellent biocompatibility. In vitro, it effectively promoted the osteogenic differentiation of rabbit bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) without showing any significant toxic effects on their adhesion and morphology. After implantation into the lumbar intervertebral space of rabbits, the composite cage significantly promoted new bone formation and achieved superior osteointegration at the interface. Therefore, this composite cage system, possessing excellent biocompatibility and a high capacity for osteointegration, represents a promising strategy for the treatment of spinal degenerative diseases.

Positive microporous polymer nanofiber interlayer tailored polyamide nanofiltration membranes for Li+/Mg2+ separation

Jia-Chen Zhang,Bing-Xin Gu,Hui-Qian Huo,Yue Shen,Ming-Jie Yin,Quan-Fu An

Construction of positively charged nanofiltration membranes is essential for extracting lithium ions from salt-lake brine to meet the growing demand of the new energy industry. However, conventional membranes suffer from low water permeability due to the large thickness of the fabricated positive-charged polyamide (PA) layer, which increases transport resistance. To address this challenge, a porous interlayer was introduced to regulate the formation of the PA layer and accelerate water transport. Specifically, water-dispersible conjugated microporous polymer (CMP) fibers were synthesized and blended with positively charged polyethyleneimine (PEI) to form a porous, positively charged interlayer. The PEI in this interlayer further participated in the interfacial polymerization process, tailoring the PA morphology and converting the originally negative surface charge to positive. As a result, a dual positively charged membrane was obtained, featuring an enlarged surface area in the PA top layer and a porous structure in the interlayer. Benefiting from the synergistic effects of the Donnan exclusion and reduced transport resistance, the membrane exhibited outstanding separation performance in purifying lithium from a Mg 2+ /Li + mixed solution (mass ratio 20), achieving a water permeance of 11.3 L m −2  h −1 ⋅bar −1 and a separation factor of 43.8. Furthermore, the membrane maintained stable performance during a 10-day continuous operation, demonstrating strong promise for practical applications.

Xi Chen,Hulin Zhang,Mengqiang Wu,Haoran Lai,Xiang Zhang,Yao Li

Electrochromic(EC) device offer a viable and efficient solution for optimizing building energy consumption, as they possess the ability to actively regulate the transmission of solar energy and visible light through voltage control. In this study, we endeavor to construct and investigate quasi-solid-state EC devices utilizing Mg 2+ electrolytes. The MgCl 2 /PEG solid-state electrolyte is deposited through knife coating and applied in EC devices. The devices exhibit the ΔT exceeding 35% across a wavelength range of 540 to 1100 nm, with a maximum value of 44% at 660 nm. Additionally, the devices demonstrate the swift switching times and a high coloration efficiency. This work not only confirms the potential of MgCl 2 /PEG electrolytes as promising candidates for next-generation EC devices but also opens up new avenues for the preparation of high-performance quasi-solid-state EC smart windows.

Sulfurized-Pyrolyzed Polyacrylonitrile Cathode for Magnesium-Sulfur Batteries Containing Mg2+/Li+ Hybrid Electrolytes

Shuxin Zhang,Wen Ren,Yanna NuLi,Baofeng Wang,Jun Yang,Jiulin Wang

Magnesium-sulfur (Mg-S) batteries are an alternative electrochemical energy-storage system with higher safety as well as large theoretical volumetric energy density than lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Herein, we further research sulfurized-pyrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (S@pPAN) composite containing 47.3 wt% sulfur as cathode of Mg-S batteries with nucleophilic (PhMgCl) 2 -AlCl 3  + LiCl/THF electrolyte. Except a significant restraint of the reaction between the nucleophilic electrolyte and the electrophilic sulfur, polysulfide dissolution and shuttle are effectively suppressed. Electrochemical performance is further enhanced using MBA-(MgCl 2 ) 2 -(AlCl 3 ) 2  + LiCl/THF non-nucleophilic electrolyte with 677.9 mAh g −1 specific capacity and 75.9% cycling stability after 85 cycles at 0.1C. More effective CEI layers formed on the cathode with a lower electrode/electrolyte internal resistance play a key effect on the enhanced electrochemical performance. This work will attract extensive study on Mg-S batteries containing easily prepared electrolytes with a combination of S@pPAN cathode.
