Desirable microwave absorption performance of ZnFe2O4@ZnO@rGO nanocomposites based on controllable permittivity and permeability

Fei Li,Li Zhuang,Wenwei Zhan,Manxi Zhou,Gang Sui,Aosong Zhou,Gang Bai,Wei Xiao,Xiaoping Yang

ZnO decorated ZnFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles were synthesized and combined with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to form ZnFe 2 O 4 @ZnO@rGO ternary hierarchical nanocomposites by a controllable method. The microstructure, morphology, and microwave absorption performance of the ZnFe 2 O 4 @ZnO@rGO nanocomposites were investigated in detail. The permittivity and permeability of the composites can be effectively regulated by controlling the content of ZnO and rGO to achieve a good impedance matching. Due to the synergistic effect of dielectric loss and magnetic loss, the ZnFe 2 O 4 @ZnO@rGO nanocomposites exhibited strong wave absorption and wide absorption bandwidth. The optimal reflection loss (RL) of the ZnFe 2 O 4 @ZnO@rGO nanocomposites reached −35.2 dB at 12.0 GHz with a thickness of 2.0 mm and the effective absorption bandwidth was 3.7 dB. The ZnFe 2 O 4 @ZnO@rGO hierarchical architecture produced lots of heterogeneous interfaces which made a significant contribution to the wave absorption performance. The combination of interfacial polarization, dipole polarization, and eddy current loss enhanced the microwave absorption capacity of the ZnFe 2 O 4 @ZnO@rGO system. This work provides a feasible approach for the design and preparation of wave absorption materials with tunable permittivity and permeability.

Microwave-assisted preparation of ZnFe2O4-Ag/rGO nanocomposites for amplification signal detection of alpha-fetoprotein

Mei Wu,Yuxiao Yang,Kaihang Cao,Chulei Zhao,Xiuwen Qiao,Chenglin Hong

In this study, a novel signal-amplified immunosensor was designed by using a microwave-assisted self-assembly method to synthesize ZnFe 2 O 4 -Ag/rGO nanocomposites. The conductivity of ZnFe 2 O 4 -rGO nanocomposites was significantly improved due to the effective inhibition of rGO accumulation by the insertion of ZnFe 2 O 4 and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) into graphene sheets. Excellent sensitivity and reproducibility were achieved through the microwave-assisted preparation of ZnFe 2 O 4 -Ag/rGO nanocomposites as a substrate, with the Ag NPs enhancing the signal because of the effective conductive matrix. The layer assembly process of the immunosensor was verified by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Under optimal conditions, the fabricated immunosensor showed good linearity over a wide concentration range from 1 pg mL −1 to 200 ng mL −1 with a low detection limit of 0.98 pg mL −1 , and exhibited excellent specificity, good stability, and reproducibility. These qualities can contribute to the successful application of a label-free immunosensor in the detection of AFP in human serum.

Wenqi Li,Jing Zhang,Wenli Zhu,Peige Qin,Qian Zhou,Minghua Lu,Xuebin Zhang,Wuduo Zhao,Shusheng Zhang,Zongwei Cai

Reduced graphene oxide/ZnFe 2 O 4 (rGO/ZnFe 2 O 4 ) nanocomposite was facile prepared and applied as magnetic sorbent for the extraction of estrogens including 17β-estradiol, 17α-estradiol, estrone and hexestrol from water, soil, and fish samples prior to HPLC analysis. The rGO/ZnFe 2 O 4 nanocomposite was characterized by scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and vibrating sample magnetometer. The experimental parameters affecting the efficiency of magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) including the amount of material, extraction time, pH, temperature, desorption solvents, desorption time, and desorption solvent volume were investigated respectively. With the developed method, good linearity was observed in the range of 0.05–500 ng/mL with the correlation coefficients (R 2 ) between 0.9978 and 0.9993. The limits of detection (S/N = 3) and limits of quantification (S/N = 10) were achieved at 0.01–0.02 ng/mL and 0.05 ng/mL, respectively. The enrichment factors were calculated as the range of 241–288. Using rGO/ZnFe 2 O 4 nanocomposite as the sorbent, the developed MSPE followed by HPLC analysis, was applied to analysis of estrogens in river water, soil and fish samples. The method has the potential application in the extraction and preconcentration ultra trace compounds in complex matrices, such as environmental and biological samples.

Novel ZnFe2O4/BC/ZnO photocatalyst for high-efficiency degradation of tetracycline under visible light irradiation

Jinhua Luo,Yaohui Wu,Mengzhu Jiang,Aihua Zhang,Xiaoyong Chen,Yelin Zeng,Yonghong Wang,Yunlin Zhao,Guangjun Wang

Developing broad-spectrum light reactions, effective charge separation, and easily recoverable photocatalysts were considered cost-effective pollution remediation methods. The ZnFe 2 O 4 /BC/ZnO composite was prepared to achieve these objectives, where biochar (BC) was used as a conductive channel and ZnFe 2 O 4 as a magnetic substance. Among them, the 0.6-ZBO composite performed the best, with photocatalytic removal of tetracycline (TC) reaching 85.6%. The photocatalytic degradation rated constant of 0.6-ZBO composite was 23.36 × 10 −3 min −1 , which was 7.6, 4.1, and 2.5 times higher than that of ZnFe 2 O 4 /BC, ZnO, and ZnFe 2 O 4 /ZnO samples, respectively. According to several characterization data, it was demonstrated that successful Z-scheme heterojunctions were constructed between ZnFe 2 O 4 and ZnO. The 0.6-ZBO complex increased the range of light absorption and strengthened the separation of electron-hole pairs, thus improving the redox ability of the complex. In the different water matrices, the stability of 0.6-ZBO was excellent and its ability to remove TC decreased slightly to about 11% after 5 cycles. This work provided a valuable approach to design a novel and efficient system for degrading organic pollutants in wastewater using magnetic biochar.

ZnO/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposite as a broad-spectrum photo-Fenton-like photocatalyst with near-infrared activity

Huabin Chen,Wenxia Liu,Zhuozhuo Qin

The majority of current photocatalysts are generally excited under ultraviolet (UV) and visible light, while near-infrared (NIR) light accounting for nearly half of solar light has not been fully used. Herein, a ZnO/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposite with the ability to degrade an organic dye in the presence of H2O2 under NIR irradiation was prepared by a co-precipitation method followed by calcination at 800 °C. As revealed by optical absorption analysis, the ZnO/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposite exhibits significant optical absorption in the UV, visible and NIR light regions. Benefitting from this unique photo-absorption property and the generation of reactive ˙OH mainly by the reaction of photogenerated electrons with H2O2, the ZnO/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposite performs well in photodegrading methyl orange under either UV, visible or NIR irradiation. Moreover, the UV, visible and NIR photocatalytic activities of the ZnO/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposite did not change significantly after three runs of recycling. This finding opens a new approach for fully utilizing solar light energy, especially the energy of NIR light.

Tunable design of yolk–shell ZnFe2O4@RGO@TiO2 microspheres for enhanced high-frequency microwave absorption

Jiantao Feng,Yechen Wang,Yanhui Hou,Liangchao Li

A series of yolk–shell ZnFe2O4@reduced graphite oxide@TiO2 (ZFO@RGO@TiO2) microspheres with different void sizes and TiO2 shell thicknesses has been successfully synthesized by combining a layer-by-layer coating process and chemical etching route. Compared to pure ZFO and hierarchical ZFO@SiO2@RGO@TiO2, the as-synthesized yolk–shell microspheres exhibited significantly enhanced microwave absorption properties in terms of effective bandwidth and reflection loss. Among these, the minimum reflection loss of the as-synthesized yolk–shell microspheres with a thickness of 2.6 mm could reach up to −44.3 dB at 15.92 GHz, and their effective absorption bandwidth at less than −10 dB was 4.1 GHz. In addition, as the shell thickness of the yolk–shell microspheres decreased, the frequency corresponding to the minimum reflection loss shifted to the high-frequency range. Hence, these obtained yolk–shell microspheres are potential new candidates for high-frequency shielding and lightweight microwave absorbing materials.

Controllable construction of ZnFe2O4-based micro-nano heterostructure for the rapid detection and degradation of VOCs

Baosheng Li,Xianfa Zhang,Lihua Huo,Shan Gao,Chuanyu Guo,Yu Zhang,Zoltán Major,Fangdou Zhang,Xiaoli Cheng,Yingming Xu

Micro-nano heterogeneous oxides have received extensive attention due to their distinctive physicochemical properties. However, it is a challenge to prepare the hierarchical multicomponent metal oxide nanomaterials with abundant heterogeneous interfaces in a controllable way. In this work, the effective construction of the heterogeneous structure of the material is achieved by regulating the ratio of metal salts under thermal solvent condition. Three-dimensional spheres (ZnFe 2 O 4 ) constructed by zero-dimensional ultra-small nanoparticles , in particular three-dimensional hollow sea urchin spheres (ZnO/ZnFe 2 O 4 ) constructed by one-dimensional nanorods and three-dimensional hydrangeas (α-Fe 2 O 3 /ZnFe 2 O 4 ) assembled by two-dimensional nanosheets were obtained. The two composite materials contain a large number of heterojunctions , which enhances the sensitivity of material to volatile organic compounds gas. Among them, the α-Fe 2 O 3 /ZnFe 2 O 4 composite shows the best sensing performance for VOCs. For example, its response to 100 ppm acetone reaches 142 at 170 °C with the response time shortened to 3 s and the detection limit falling to 10 ppb. Meanwhile, the composite material presents a degradation rate of more than 90% for VOCs at a flow rate of 20 mL/min at 170 °C. In addition, the sensing and sensitivity mechanism of the composite material are studied in detail by combining GC-MS, XPS with UV diffuse reflectance tests.

Visible-light bisphenol S removal by magnetically recoverable BiOBr/ZnFe2O4: Catalyst recovery and water-matrix effects

Song Hou,Ruonan Guo,Yan Zhang,Shengwang Gao,Changsheng Guo,Jian Xu

BiOBr/ZnFe 2 O 4 couples visible-light bisphenol S (BPS) removal with magnetic recovery. • BPS removal at 60 min ranged from 69.2% to 99.0% across four spiked water matrices. • Scavenger and probe tests support oxygen-dependent and radical-mediated oxidation. • BPS removal remained at 95% in the fifth cycle after methanol regeneration. • Residual acute toxicity persisted after near-complete parent BPS removal. Bisphenol S (BPS) removal was investigated using a magnetically recoverable BiOBr/ZnFe 2 O 4 composite under visible-light irradiation. Among four nominal feed mass ratios, ZnFe 2 O 4 :BiOBr = 1:4 gave the highest activity, achieving 97.1% BPS removal within 40 min at a catalyst dose of 1.0 g L −1 and an initial BPS concentration of 5 mg L −1 . Its apparent rate constant of 0.091 min −1 was approximately 2.0 and 14.2 times those of pristine BiOBr and ZnFe 2 O 4 , respectively. The composite exhibited a saturation magnetisation of 28.8 emu g −1 , with visible magnetic clarification by 30 s. Removal at 60 min decreased from 99% to 95% over five cycles involving methanol washing without catalyst replenishment, while the principal crystalline phases were retained. Scavenger responses and terephthalic-acid probe fluorescence supported oxygen-dependent and radical-mediated oxidation. Across four BPS-spiked water matrices, 60-min removal ranged from 99.0% in distilled water to 69.2% in wastewater-treatment-plant effluent. Aliivibrio fischeri luminescence inhibition rose from 13.32 ± 1.17% initially to a highest sampled mean of 31.37 ± 2.70% at 20 min and declined to 22.39 ± 1.36% at 90 min (mean ± standard deviation, n = 3), showing persistent residual acute toxicity despite parent-compound removal. The results demonstrate the combined benefits of visible-light activity and magnetic recoverability, while identifying water-matrix inhibition and residual toxicity as constraints on further process development.

Study on the piezo-photocatalytic performance of ZnFe2O4/BaTiO3@alumina hollow particles (ZBA) for tetracycline degradation

Yaping Jiang,Yufei Zhao,Yuzhen Wu,Gaoyang Xia,Yunxiao Ban

To overcome the limitations of traditional photocatalysts in treating persistent and biologically hazardous pollutants, this study employed the sol–gel method using hollow alumina nanoparticles as a template to successfully synthesize a hollow ZnFe 2 O 4 /BaTiO 3 @alumina (ZBA) composite material. The prepared ZBA composite exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity for the degradation of tetracycline (TC), achieving a degradation rate of 84% within 60 min—values that were 2.72-fold, 1.81-fold, and 1.33-fold higher, respectively, than those observed for ZnFe 2 O 4 , BaTiO 3 , and ZnFe 2 O 4 /BaTiO 3 . This performance enhancement can be primarily attributed to its coupled piezoelectric–photocatalytic process, which facilitates charge transfer and reduces the recombination of photogenerated carriers. Free radical trapping experiments confirmed that OH − , O 2 − , and h + are the dominant active species involved in the degradation of TC. Furthermore, the hollow alumina support structure improved light utilization efficiency, catalyst dispersion, and magnetic recovery capability. These results demonstrate that the ZBA composite material is an efficient multifunctional photocatalyst with significant potential for practical wastewater treatment applications.

In Situ Growth of ZnFe2O4 Nanoparticle Hybridized with rGO for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes

Siying Li,Yifei Zhao,Ailin Tian,Dan Li,Qicheng Hu

ZnFe2O4is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity, but its practical use is limited by poor conductivity and large volume changes during cycling. To address these issues, a ZnFe2O4-reduced graphene oxide (Z-F-rGO) composite was fabricated via solvothermal synthesis and calcination, with Z-F nanoparticles in situ anchored on rGO sheets. Characterizations (XRD, Raman, XPS, SEM, TEM) confirm the formation of highly crystalline spinel Z-F with good interfacial contact with rGO. The Z-F-rGO electrode shows excellent electrochemical performance, maintaining a reversible capacity of 985.4 mA h g−1after 100 cycles at 0.5 A g−1, significantly higher than the 498.2 mA h g−1of the Z-F. At 1.0 A g−1, the Z-F-rGO electrode retains 959.4 mA h g−1after 300 cycles, while the Z-F electrode shows a capacity of 441.3 mA h g−1. CV analysis indicates good reversibility, while EIS and GITT reveal reduced charge-transfer resistance and enhanced Li+diffusion. This work provides an efficient strategy for scalable Z-F-rGO composites, offering a promising approach for high-performance LIB anodes.

Photocatalytic generation of electron and hole for peroxymonosulfate activation to degrade levofloxacin over ZnO/ZnFe2O4 heterojunction

Yu Chen,Yiwen Zhong,Zenghui Diao,Diyun Chen,Lingjun Kong

This study addresses the challenge of eliminating persistent antibiotics like levofloxacin (LEV) from wastewater by developing a ZnO/ZnFe 2 O 4 heterojunction catalyst through a sol-gel method. The heterojunction synergistically combines ZnO and ZnFe 2 O 4 to reduce bandgap energy (1.89–1.99   eV) and enhance visible-light absorption. Under energy-efficient LED irradiation (5   W, 320–780   nm), the ZnO/ZnFe 2 O 4 -PMS system achieved 94.11% LEV degradation within 90   min, alongside 58.61% total organic carbon removal efficiency and 71.69% defluorination efficiency, outperforming individual components and physical mixtures. Mechanistic investigations revealed that reactive oxygen species ( 1 O 2 , SO 4 - ∙, ‧O 2 - and ‧OH) and holes jointly oxidize LEV. The heterojunction’s built-in electric field effectively suppressed charge recombination, as being confirmed by photoluminescence and photocurrent analyses. Remarkably, the catalyst retained >87% efficiency over four cycles with negligible metal leaching efficiency (<1%), demonstrating robust stability. This work highlights the dual advantages of the ZnO/ZnFe 2 O 4 heterojunction and LED-driven activation, offering a scalable and energy-efficient strategy for antibiotic wastewater remediation.

Synthesize magnetic ZnFe2O4@C/Cd0.9Zn0.1S catalysts with S-scheme heterojunction to achieve extraordinary hydrogen production efficiency

Dafeng Zhang,Dong Zhang,Shikai Wang,Hengshuai Li,Junchang Liu,Xipeng Pu,Peixian Chen,Ran Qin,Haiquan Hu,Peiqing Cai

Suppressing the electron-hole recombination rate of catalyst legitimately is one of the effective strategies to improve photocatalytic hydrogen evolution . Herein, carbon-coated metal oxide , ZnFe 2 O 4 @C (ZFO@C), nanoparticles were synthesized and employed to couple with quadrupedal Cd 0.9 Zn 0.1 S (CZS) via an ordinary ultrasonic self-assembly method combined with calcination to form a novel ZFO@C/CZS catalyst with step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction . The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was conducted to verify the enhanced photoactivity of ZFO@C/CZS. The optimal ZFO@C/CZS exhibits an extraordinary photocatalytic HER rate of 111.3 ± 0.9 mmol g -1 h −1 under visible-light irradiation, corresponding to an apparent quantum efficiency as high as (76.2 ± 0.9)% at 450 nm. Additionally, the as-synthesized ZFO@C/CZS composite exhibits high stability and recyclability. The excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance should arise from the formed S-scheme heterojunction and the unique ZFO@C core–shell structure, which inhibit electron hole recombination as well as provide more reactive sites. The pathway of S-scheme charge transfer was validated through density functional theory calculations and electrochemical measurements. This work provides a rational strategy for the synthesis of unique magnetic S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for water splitting under visible light irradiation.
