Zirconium–lignosulfonate polyphenolic polymer for highly efficient hydrogen transfer of biomass-derived oxygenates under mild conditions

Shenghui Zhou,Fanglin Dai,Zhouyang Xiang,Tao Song,Detao Liu,Fachuang Lu,Haisong Qi

Both value-added utilization of low-rank renewable feedstocks to prepare catalytic materials and selective transformation of bioderived aldehydes are very attractive topics. Herein, lignosulfonate, a waste by-product from the paper industry, was simply assembled with ZrCl 4 under non-toxic hydrothermal conditions for scalable preparation of Zr-containing polyphenolic biopolymer catalysts (Zr LS). Systematic characterizations indicated that the strong coordination between Zr 4+ and phenolic hydroxyl groups in lignosulfonate led to the formation of strong Lewis acid-base couple sites (Zr 4+ −O 2− ) and porous inorganic-organic framework structure (mesopores centered at 6.1 nm), while the inherent sulfonic groups in lignosulphonate could serve as Brønsted acidic sites. The cooperative role of these versatile acid−base sites in Zr LS afforded excellent catalytic performance for Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reaction of a broad range of bioderived platform chemicals under mild conditions (80 °C), especially of furfural (FF) to furfuryl alcohol (FA), in quantitative yields (96%) with high FA formation rate of 9600 μmol g −1  h −1 and TOF of 4.37 h −1 . Kinetic studies revealed that the activation energy of the MPV reduction of FF was as low as 52.25 kJ/mol, accounting for the high reaction rate. Isotopic labelling experiments demonstrated direct hydrogen transfer from the α-C of 2-PrOH to the α-C of FF on acid-base sites was the rate-determining step. Moreover, Zr LS showed good recyclability for at least seven reaction cycles.

Thermal properties and thermal stabilization of lignosulfonate-acrylonitrile-itaconic acid terpolymer for preparation of carbon fiber

Dapeng Liu,Qin Ouyang,Xuefeng Jiang,Hongbo Ma,Yousi Chen,Liu He

Lignin, the most abundant aromatic biopolymer on the earth, is considered as a sustainable carbon fiber precursor. However, lignin-based carbon fibers face great challenges in the fiber spinning and thermal stabilization due to the complex structure of lignin. In this work, lignosulfonate-acrylonitrile-itaconic acid (LS-AN-IA) terpolymer with excellent spinnability was prepared as a novel precursor for carbon fibers, and the thermal properties and thermal stabilization of this precursor were studied. The introduced itaconic acid (IA) comonomer was found to play an important role in improving the thermal properties and promoting the thermal stabilization. The hindering effect of LS on the cyclization reaction of nitrile groups was overcome by the IA comonomer through changing free-radical reaction mechanism to an ionic one. The thermal stabilization of the LS-AN-IA terpolymer precursor fibers could be carried out at a lower temperature and required a shorter time, which helped to reduce the energy and time consumption. Carbon fibers with tensile strength and tensile modulus of 1.74 GPa and 210 GPa, respectively, were obtained from the LS-AN-IA terpolymer.

Compressible, anti-fatigue, extreme environment adaptable, and biocompatible supramolecular organohydrogel enabled by lignosulfonate triggered noncovalent network

Gu Yihui,Xu Chao,Wang Yilin,Luo Jing,Shi Dongsheng,Wu Wenjuan,Chen Lu,Jin Yongcan,Jiang Bo,Chen Chaoji

Achieving a synergy of biocompatibility and extreme environmental adaptability with excellent mechanical property remains challenging in the development of synthetic materials. Herein, a “bottom-up” solution-interface-induced self-assembly strategy is adopted to develop a compressible, anti-fatigue, extreme environment adaptable, biocompatible, and recyclable organohydrogel composed of chitosan-lignosulfonate-gelatin by constructing noncovalent bonded conjoined network. The ethylene glycol/water solvent induced lignosulfonate nanoparticles function as bridge in chitosan/gelation network, forming multiple interfacial interactions that can effectively dissipate energy. The organohydrogel exhibits high compressive strength (54 MPa) and toughness (3.54 MJ/m 3 ), 100 and 70 times higher than those of pure chitosan/gelatin hydrogel, meanwhile, excellent self-recovery and fatigue resistance properties. Even when subjected to severe compression up to a strain of 0.5 for 500,000 cycles, the organohydrogel still remains intact. This organohydrogel also demonstrates notable biocompatibility both in vivo and vitro, environment adaptability at low temperature, as well as recyclability. Such all natural organohydrogel provides a promising route towards the development of high-performance load-bearing materials.

Effect and characterization of sodium lignosulfonate on alkali pretreatment for enhancing enzymatic saccharification of corn stover

Huanfei Xu,Guang Yu,Xindong Mu,Chunyan Zhang,Paul DeRoussel,Chao Liu,Bin Li,Haisong Wang

A modified alkali pretreatment (MAP) process was established in both lab-scale and pilot-scale, based on the on-line production and utilization of lignosulfonate for improving enzymatic saccharification of corn stover. Sodium lignosulfonate (SLS) produced by directly sulfonating lignin in spent liquor separated from alkali pretreatment was reused in the next cycle of alkali pretreatment. The results showed that, by using 11   wt% NaOH, 2   wt% SLS and 0.1   wt% anthraquinone (AQ) in MAP, delignification rate and final total sugar yields could reach about 78% and 80% respectively, which were about 6% and 9% higher compared to the blank conventional NaOH pretreatment under the same conditions. In addition, sulfonation degree of SLS had linearly impact on the final total sugar yields.

Improving enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic substrates with pre-hydrolysates by adding cetyltrimethylammonium bromide to neutralize lignosulfonate

Cheng Cai,Xueqing Qiu,Xuliang Lin,Hongming Lou,Yuxia Pang,Dongjie Yang,Siwei Chen,Kaifan Cai

Two pretreatment methods to overcome recalcitrance of lignocelluloses, sulfite pretreatment (SPORL) and dilute acid (DA), were conducted to pretreat softwood masson pine and hardwood eucalyptus for enzymatic hydrolysis. In the presence of corresponding pre-hydrolysates, adding moderate cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) could enhance the enzymatic hydrolysis of the SPORL-pretreated substrates, but had no enhancement for the DA-pretreated substrates. The results showed that sodium lignosulfonate (SL) in pre-hydrolysates and CTAB together had a strong enhancement on the enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocelluloses. The compound of commercial lignosulfonate SXSL and CTAB (SXSL-CTAB) could enhance the substrate enzymatic digestibility (SED) of SPORL-pretreated masson pine from 27.1% to 71.0%, and that of DA-pretreated eucalyptus from 37.6% to 67.9%. The mechanism that CTAB increased the adsorption of SL on lignin to form more effective steric hindrance and reduced the non-productive adsorption of cellulase on lignin by neutralizing the negative charge of SL was proposed.

Insight into the Thermal Washing Mechanism of Sodium Lignosulfonate Alkyl/Sodium Persulfate Compound on Oily Sludge

Yun Ma,Hui Liu,Liuli Zhu,Yi Xie,Chuanqi Ren,Xiaorong Mo,Xiaoying Liu,Chen Liang,Gang Deng,Shuangquan Yao,Chengrong Qin

The thermal washing of oily sludge using sodium persulfate (SD) assisted by sodium lignosulfonate surfactant has been demonstrated to be an effective method for oily sludge remediation. To further explore the underlying mechanisms of this process, a systematic study was conducted by simulating oily sludge systems consisting of saturated hydrocarbons (SaH), aromatics hydrocarbons (ArH), resins (Res), and asphaltenes (Asp). The effects of reaction conditions, such as pH, sodium lignosulfonate alkyl (LSA) concentration, SD concentration, and washing temperature, were analyzed. Furthermore, the oxidative kinetic mechanism during the reaction process was investigated. The results demonstrated that neither petroleum hydrocarbons nor SD underwent significant chemical transformations when exposed to LSA, while SD exhibited a marked oxidative degradation effect on all four types of hydrocarbons. Oxidation kinetics indicated that sodium hydroxide played a catalytic role, with SD being the main oxidant and particularly efficient in degrading Asp and Res. Meanwhile, LSA contributed to the removal of hydrocarbons by reducing the surface tension of the solution, enhancing solubilization. This study not only elucidates the central role of SD in the thermal washing process but also provides a solid theoretical foundation for the practical application of this technology in oily sludge treatment.

Lignosulfonate-Induced orientation of Poly(3,4-ethlylenedioxythiophene) for enhanced efficiency in bifacial Dye-Sensitized solar cells

Baorui Liu,Hongqing Cheng,Fangchao Cheng,Dongying Hu

Bifacial dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have the potential to address the challenge of low photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) in various applications. However, achieving a harmonious alignment between the counter electrode (CE) structure and its crucial properties remains a significant challenge. Herein, a lignin-induced orientation strategy was developed for poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) using lignosulfonate (SL) as both a surfactant and initiator during the electrochemical deposition process. This approach enabled the successful construction of high-performance CEs for DSSCs. The resulting SL/PEDOT CEs exhibited a low disordered orientation distribution and high redox capacity, achieving a high backside light absorption of 10.7 % and a high conductivity of 104 S/m. Additionally, SL/PEDOT CEs featured excellent corrosion resistance, high electro-catalytic activity, and long service life, maintaining over 90 % of their initial efficiency after 500h. Notably, the incorporation of SL into pristine PEDOT increased the number of electron transport sites, leading to an increase in short-circuit current densities from 21.49 to 29.04 mA/cm 2 . Under one-sided and double-sided irradiation, DSSCs modified with SL/PEDOT CEs achieved higher PCE values of 9.49 % and 16.13 %, respectively, which exceeded those of numerous previously reported DSSCs. Benefiting from the matching effect between molecular/microstructure regulation and performance optimization resulting from SL-induced the orientation of PEDOT molecules, this work offers a new paradigm for the development of high-efficiency bifacial DSSCs.

Performance enhancement of perovskite solar cells by doping non-toxic multifunctional natural sodium lignosulfonate into SnO2

Zezhuan Jiang,Fuling Li,Huaiqing Yan,Rathes Kannan R,Lijia Chen,Ping Li,Qunliang Song

The buried interface between perovskite and the electron transport layer (ETL) played a crucial role in improving the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of n-i-p structured perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Commercially prepared SnO2-based ETL films often suffered from severe interface defects, imperfect energy level alignment, and uncontrollable perovskite nucleation sites, hindering the achievement of highly efficient and stable PSCs. In this study, the hindering factors of commercial SnO2 ETL films were all addressed by the incorporation of a non-toxic multifunctional molecule, natural sodium lignosulfonate (SL) into the SnO2 ETL precursor, and ameliorated perovskite films were obtained. As a result, the PCE of a reference device (19.60%) was improved to 21.12% after doping with SL. Furthermore, unencapsulated SL-doped devices exhibited excellent environmental stability. After 840 h of storage at ∼20% RH, the SL-modified device retained ∼83% of its initial PCE, well exceeding the control device (∼13%). In addition, our findings suggest a novel strategy aimed at improving the efficiency and stability of PSCs by the incorporation of non-toxic multifunctional molecules such as natural SL.

Xia Wang,Rui Sun,Guiming Xie,Zhengguang Pan,Xianhong Gong,Bo Cui,Haowen Luo

Multi-heteroatom co-doped carbon aerogels featuring abundant micro/mesoporous structures are highly used as electrode materials for supercapacitors, showing excellent specific capacitance and cycle stability. In this study, the hierarchical porous carbon aerogel (BHPC-4) co-doped with heteroatoms containing nitrogen (3.23 atom%), oxygen (12.17 atom%), boron (10.09 atom%) and sulfur (0.74 atom%) was prepared with sodium lignosulfonate and sodium alginate as carbon precursors and ammonium pentaborate as boron source and activator. The material demonstrates an impressive specific capacitance of 381.0 F·g −1 at 1 A·g −1 in a three-electrode system with an electrolyte of 6 M KOH. In a symmetric supercapacitor, it has a high capacitance retention rate of 95.9 % and a coulomb efficiency of 97.2 % after 10,000 cycles at 5 A·g −1 . Remarkably, the symmetric supercapacitor achieves an energy of 15.1 Wh·kg −1 at 72.0 W·kg −1 . The study presents a novel approach to efficient use of renewable biomass to produce nitrogen, oxygen, boron and sulfur multi-heteroatom doped carbon aerogels for supercapacitors.

Bifunctional sodium lignosulfonate enabled the anode with LiF-rich interface for wide-temperature lithium-ion batteries

Kuo Li,Wenbin Luo,Tu Ran,Shuhao Ruan,Yi Cheng,Haisong Wang

It is believed that slow Li + desolvation on the surface and sluggish Li + transfer in the bulk is responsible for the relatively poor high-rate and low-temperature performance of graphite anode. In this work, we design carbon composites with LiF-rich solid electrolyte interface (SEI) by one-step process using the sodium lignosulfonate (LS) as the bifunctional agents. The polar functional groups on LS could promote the formation of SEI rich in LiF, which can facilitate Li + desolvation and reduce the energy barrier for Li + transfer. Meanwhile, the S elements in LS can be dopped into the carbon, which could regulate the interlamellar structure of carbon, furth promoting the Li + transfer in the bulk of carbon composites. As a result, the designed carbon anode exhibits impressive specific capacity of 1047 mAh g −1 under 100 mA g −1 at the room temperature. Even at low temperatures, it still displays 437 mAh g −1 at 0 °C and 300 mAh g −1 at −10 °C under 100 mA g −1 , which is far better than the graphite anode. This work puts forward an effective and green strategy to design the carbon anode with LiF-rich SEI and rapid Li + transfer for LIBs with high capacity and excellent wide-temperature performance.

Understanding the Effect of the Complex of Lignosulfonate and Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide on the Enzymatic Digestibility of Cellulose

Xuliang Lin,Cheng Cai,Jinhao Huang,Hongming Lou,Xueqing Qiu,Meilu Lin,Jieyi Zheng,Yuxia Pang,Dongjie Yang

Lignosulfonate (LS) had various influences on the enzymatic digestibility of lignocelluloses for the complicated structure of LS. The effect of the complex of LS and cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (LS–CTAB) on the enzymatic digestibility of corn stover and Avicel was investigated in this study. The LS–CTAB catanionic surfactant could significantly improve the enzymatic digestibility of Avicel and corn stover from 42.1 and 24.3% to 62.3 and 56.2%, respectively. In addition, the effect of LS–CTAB with various molecular weights and sulfonation degrees of LS and varied alkyl chain lengths of CnTAB on the enzymatic digestibility of Avicel was further investigated to reveal that the mechanism of LS–CTAB enhanced the enzymatic digestibility of cellulose. LS adsorbed on cellulase aggregates and dispersed the aggregates to form the smaller and more hydrophilic LS–cellulase aggregates. CTAB neutralized the electronegative charge of LS–cellulase aggregates, improved the interaction between cellulase and cellulose, and enhanced the enzymatic digestibility of cellulose.
