This study explores the development of chitosan (CS) films enhanced with citric acid-based deep eutectic agents (CA-DEA) to address the dual challenges of sustainable food packaging and effective fish preservation. CA-DEA was synthesized using citric acid (CA) and choline chloride (ChCl) in molar ratios of 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1, with the synthesis confirmed through FTIR analysis. Among these, the 4:1 molar ratio, identified as the most effective formulation for its superior antibacterial properties against E. coli (17.3 ± 0.78 mm) and S. aureus (23.625 ± 0.09 mm), was further evaluated at varying concentrations (0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2%) to examine its effects on the structure and functional properties of CS films. Mechanical testing revealed that films with 0.5% CA-DEA achieved the highest tensile strength (TS; 47.98 ± 2.40 MPa), while higher concentrations led to decreased TS (13.59 ± 1.37 MPa), likely due to over-plasticization. The incorporation of CA-DEA enhanced the films' antibacterial, antioxidant, and UV-barrier properties, significantly improving their bioactivity. As a bioactive coating on tilapia fillets, the incorporation of CA-DEA formulation effectively reduced water loss, preserved protein, controlled TVB-N levels, and extended shelf life, showing the most effective preservation results. This study highlights CA-DEA’s multifunctionality as a bioactive plasticizer, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional packaging and advancing eco-friendly preservation technologies for perishable aquatic products.

Background: Food spoilage, particularly in meat products, presents a significant economic and health concern, necessitating the development of reliable and user-friendly monitoring methods. Aim: This study presents the development and evaluation of novel colorimetric films for real-time monitoring of meat freshness. Methods: Films were formulated using anthocyanin (AHO) and betacyanin (BTA) from purple cabbage and red dragon fruit, respectively, embedded within polyvinyl alcohol and carboxymethyl cellulose matrix. Two pigment ratios, AHO:BTA (1:3) and (3:1), were compared to evaluate mechanical properties, antioxidant activity, and ammonia sensitivity. Results: The AHO:BTA (1:3) film demonstrated higher tensile strength, whereas the (3:1) film exhibited greater antioxidant capacity and ammonia responsiveness. Colorimetric changes were assessed across the pH range, showing sensitivity to pH shifts. The films were then applied to beef, lamb, fish, and pork samples, and their color alterations during storage under ambient and refrigerated conditions were correlated with total volatile basic nitrogen and pH levels. Conclusion: The results show a strong correlation between film color changes and established meat spoilage indicators, demonstrating the potential of these natural pigment-based films for effective, nontoxic, and visual monitoring of meat freshness.

The development of multifunctional cotton composites combining waterproof, wrinkle-resistant, anti-ultraviolet, antioxidant properties, along with good dyeability, is highly attractive for expanding their application in protective textiles. In the work, a composite cotton fabric (cWPU/CS/LA@C) was prepared via knife-coating process, using cationic waterborne polyurethane (cWPU) and chitosan (CS) as matrices, with alpha-lipoic acid (LA) serving as both the active ingredient and crosslinking agent. The mechanical properties of cWPU/CS/LA@C were significantly improved, showing a tensile strength of 58.74 MPa and an elastic modulus of 446.46 MPa. Additionally, it exhibited high hydrophobicity, excellent wrinkle resistance, good antioxidant activity and satisfactory low-temperature dyeability. Compared to the untreated cotton fabric, higher color depth (K/S) values were achieved for the modified cotton fabrics dyed with curcumin and reactive red KN-B at 30 °C and 60 °C, respectively. Meanwhile, the adsorption behavior of two dyes on modified cotton under these dyeing conditions followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Furthermore, the color fastness of cWPU/CS/LA@C fabric remained at a high level even after 15 washing cycles. This research provides a simple feasible approach for preparation of multifunctional cotton composite materials and broadens their applications in technical and healthcare textile fields.

In this study, K-carrageenan (KC)/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composite nanofiber membranes loaded with vitamin C (VC)/2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) inclusion complexes were prepared by electrostatic spinning for blueberry preservation. A scanning electron microscope, electronic universal testing machine, and other instruments were used to analyze the apparent and mechanical properties of the membrane as well as the physicochemical indexes of blueberries during the preservation process. The loading of the inclusion raised the average diameter of the nanofibers membrane, reduced the crystallinity, and hydrophobicity, and improved the thermal stability of the fibers membrane. The release curves showed that encapsulating the inclusion complex in KC/PLA significantly prolonged the release time of VC. The membranes exhibited better antimicrobial properties as well as higher antioxidant properties in vitro and in vivo . These results indicate that the developed antimicrobial membrane has good application prospects in food packaging.

Cellulose-based carbon dots (C-CDs) with fluorescence and non-toxicity properties have attracted wide attention in the field of biomedicine. However, constructing dual-stimuli hydrogels incorporated with C-CDs using biomass-based raw materials with biodegradable and antimicrobial characteristics for drug sustained-release remains a challenge. Herein, an interpenetrated-network method was proposed in which the N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM) monomer, regarded as the second network, was polymerized via photo-initiation. Additionally, C-CDs derived from lychee waste were used as cross-linking agent, which was introduced into β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)/carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) first-network system, to fabricate a dual-network fluorescence hydrogels called β-CD/CMC-(PVA-NIPAM). The design of dual-network hydrogel can effectively enhance swelling and water retention abilities within a certain time. To evaluate the biomedical application of the obtained hydrogel, ibuprofen, as a poorly water-soluble model drug, was loaded into the hydrogel utilizing advantages of possessing hydrophobic inner cavity of β-CD and the highly dense structure of double-network hydrogels, to complete release behavior under different pH and temperature, with the maximum release rate reaching up to 96 %. Furthermore, it is noted that the cellulose-based interpenetrated-network hydrogel has access to cells but exhibits no cytotoxicity in vitro. Herein, this dual-responsive fluorescent hydrogel is expected to play a potential role in drug delivery and drug tracking.

In the study, Grifola frondosa polysaccharides (GFPs) and gallic acid (GA) were utilized to synthesize selenium nanoparticles (GFPs-GA-SeNPs) through a redox reaction involving sodium selenite and ascorbic acid. The morphological changes of GFPs-GA-SeNPs and their antioxidant activities during simulated gastrointestinal digestion were investigated. The results revealed that the antioxidant capacity of GFPs-GA-SeNPs was significantly enhanced compared to SeNPs and GFPs-SeNPs, with IC₅₀ values for scavenging DPPH, superoxide anion, and hydroxyl radical of 0.45, 0.55, and 0.63 mg/mL, respectively. In addition, GFPs-GA-SeNPs showed a two-stage release pattern in in vitro digestion and had a stronger selenium release capacity. At the cellular level, oxidative stress and apoptosis were aggravated in the model group compared with the control group. Interestingly, compared with SeNPs and GFPs-SeNPs, GFPs-GA-SeNPs can more effectively restore mitochondrial membrane potential, reduce ROS levels, and improve apoptosis. Besides, GFPs-GA-SeNPs can up-regulate the expression of Nrf2 protein ( p < 0.05) which can induce the expression of HO-1, SOD, GSH-Px, CAT, decrease the MDA content. Moreover, GFPs-GA-SeNPs can downregulate NF-κB protein, which can decrease the expression of TNF-α and increase the expression of IL-10. GFPs-GA-SeNPs demonstrated exceptional antioxidant activity and could benefit various industries, including food and health products, and have enormous potential application values.

Ultrasound-assisted extraction technology was utilized to extract total flavonoids from Chaenomeles speciosa (Sweet) Nakai, and response surface methodology was employed to optimize the extraction process. The anti-oxidant and lipoxygenase inhibitory activities were evaluated, along with an analysis of the type of inhibition. The results revealed that the optimal extraction conditions for total flavonoids from Chaenomeles speciosa (Sweet) Nakai were as follows: an ethanol concentration of 62%, a liquid-to-solid ratio of 15:1 mL/g, an ultrasonic temperature of 68°C, and an ultrasonic time of 40 min, resulting in a total flavonoid extraction rate of 10.18%. Antioxidant assays demonstrated that the Chaenomeles speciosa (Sweet) Nakai extract exhibited significant radical scavenging activities against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radicals, 2,2’-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid ammonium salt) radicals, and hydroxyl radicals, with IC 50 values of 582 µg/mL, 538 µg/mL, and 1709 µg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, enzyme inhibition assays indicated that the Chaenomeles speciosa (Sweet) Nakai extract possesses notable inhibitory activity against lipoxygenase, with an IC 50 value of 2658 µg/mL. This inhibition is mediated through a mixed reversible inhibition mechanism.

Oleogels have significant potential for delivering lipid-soluble bioactive compounds. We here prepared a tea polysaccharide conjugate (TPC)-Xanthan gum (XG) complex using the emulsion template method and investigated its curcumin (Cur) loading capacity and in vitro digestion mechanisms. Results unveiled that XG interacts non-covalently with TPC, primarily through electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding, enhancing emulsion template formation and stabilization. In addition, XG improved the oleogel’s oil-binding capacity, gel strength, hardness, apparent viscosity, and other gel properties. Meanwhile, the complex oleogel-loaded Cur exhibited a high Cur encapsulation efficiency (>80%), increased antioxidant activity, an augmented free fatty acid release rate, and improved Cur bioaccessibility (>50%) and digestive stability. These findings provide a novel approach to designing oleogels for the effective delivery of lipid-soluble bioactive compounds.

Although the potential of chitosan (CS) -based biomass packaging materials for food preservation is encouraging, their use is severely constrained by the poor mechanical, UV, antioxidant, and solubility qualities. This study successfully combined silver nanoparticles made from Catharanthus roseus extracts with chitosan (CS- Ca -Ag) to enrich the functions of CS film. The films' Young's modulus values (45.489 MPa) were considerably raised after adding the extract-biosynthesized silver nanoparticles, in contrast to the chitosan film, and their water vapor permeability (2.386 × 10 −12 g·mm −1 ·Pa −1 ·h −1 ) was greatly reduced. Furthermore, the antibacterial, antioxidant, and UV adsorption capabilities of CS- Ca -Ag films were significantly improved. The prepared Cs- Ca -Ag film had high biocompatibility and safety, making it suitable for strawberry coatings and chicken packaging. The CS- Ca -Ag film effectively limited the weight loss of fresh food, reduced nutrient loss, prevented microbial growth, and significantly extended food's shelf life. CS-based reinforced films containing Catharanthus roseus extract and silver nanoparticles showed potential food coating and packaging material applications.

Phlorotannins, recognized for their efficacy and safety as natural tyrosinase in hibitors, have posed challenges due to their limited extraction efficiency and the elusive nature of their mechanism of action. Here, we developed an ultrasonic-assisted enzymatic extraction (UAEE) protocol that significantly enhanced phlorotannin recovery from Sargassum horneri, achieving a total phenolic content (TPC) of 21.51 mg PGE/g DW. Subsequent purification using solvent extraction and Sephadex LH-20 yielded high-purity alginate phlorotannins (SHP), exhibiting potent DPPH radical scavenging and tyrosinase inhibitory activities, with IC 50 values of 22.71 and 26.90 μg/mL, respectively. Structural elucidation based on NMR and MS data suggested that SHP predominantly comprises fucophloroethols, with a degree of polymerization ranging from 3 to 8. Reciprocal plot analysis indicated that SHP inhibits tyrosinase activity through a competitive inhibition mechanism, while fluorescence spectroscopy revealed a dynamic quenching effect of SHP on tyrosinase. Molecular docking studies further elucidated t hat van der Waals forces and hydrophobic interactions are the primary forces governing the interaction between SHP and tyrosinase. Cellular experiments demonstrated the significant inhibitory effects of SHP on both melanin production and tyrosinase activity in B16-F10 cells. This research presents promising lead compounds for the development of novel tyrosinase inhibitors, while also providing theoretical and methodological foundations for the comprehensive utilization of Sargassum horneri.

The preservation of fresh fruits is critically challenged by oxidative degradation and microbial contamination, which lead to quality deterioration and reduced shelf life. In this study, we took advantage of the multiple benefits of Taxfolin (Tax) and copper to develop CuTax nanozymes, and which were showed to have excellent free radical scavenging ability, as evidenced by 90.3 % ± 0.2 % DPPH and 85.61 % ± 0.08 % ABTS free radical scavenging rates. Additionally, the CuTax exhibited peroxidase-like (POD-like) activity and effective glutathione (GSH) depletion. Moreover, the CuTax were found to effectively suppress the colony formation of E. coli and S. aureus , reduce bacterial viability, and disrupt bacterial structures. Ultimately, a CuTax/CS composite coating/films for food preservation was successfully developed using chitosan (CS) as a carrier and the protective efficacy against food spoilage was evaluated using bananas and apples as representative fruits. These findings suggest that CuTax/CS composite coatings offer a multifunctional approach to active food packaging that effectively extend the shelf life and preserve the quality of fresh fruits.

Diabetic wounds are highly susceptible to bacterial infections, often resulting in chronic wounds that pose a substantial challenge to clinical treatment. Furthermore, the irregular shapes of these wounds limit the effectiveness of conventional dressings. Therefore, development of a new type of antibacterial dressing that can accommodate various wound shapes is urgently required. In this study, we designed injectable hydrogels with bacterial microenvironment-responsive antibacterial, adhesive, and antioxidant properties. These hydrogels were developed by incorporating polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA NPs) into a gelatin/oxidized dextran (Gel-oDex) network crosslinked via dynamic Schiff base reactions. Notably, the Gel-oDex-PDA-PHMB hydrogel demonstrated strong antibacterial efficacy against S. aureus , E. coli , and MRSA (all exceeding 99%), with PHMB-release experiments confirming its responsiveness to the bacterial microenvironment. Additionally, the hydrogel exhibited significant antioxidant activity, as evidenced by the DPPH radical scavenging assays. With good biocompatibility, the Gel-oDex-PDA-PHMB hydrogel also demonstrated effectiveness in killing bacteria and promoting the regeneration and functional reconstruction of skin tissue in bacteria-infected diabetic rats.
