Ni-rich layered oxides, benefiting from their superior specific capacity, have emerged as pivotal cathode candidates for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Nevertheless, these materials suffer from severe intrinsic interfacial and structural degradation under high-voltage operation, which severely compromises their practical electrochemical performance. Herein, we developed a surface-bulk phase differentiated modification strategy integrating CeO 2 coating and Fe 3+ doping, leveraging the divergent diffusion behaviors induced by the different ionic radii of Ce 3+ and Fe 3+ ions. This targeted modification approach effectively mitigated the interfacial degradation and bulk structural deterioration of Ni-rich cathode materials. Specifically, the surface CeO 2 coating inhibited parasitic reactions at the cathode–electrolyte interface, and its rich oxygen vacancies efficiently suppressed lattice oxygen release during long-term cycling. Meanwhile, bulk Fe 3+ doping reduced Li + /Ni 2+ cation mixing, alleviated internal lattice strain, and reinforced the crystal framework. The synergistic effect of CeO 2 coating and Fe 3+ doping endowed the cathode with optimized interfacial integrity and structural durability. Taking LiNi 0.83 Co 0.11 Al 0.06 O 2 as a representative material, the CeO 2 -coated and Fe 3+ -doped cathode demonstrated significantly improved cycling performance at conventional 4.3 V and elevated 4.5/4.6 V. Specifically, after 200 cycles at 1 C within 3.0–4.6 V, the modified cathode retained a capacity retention of 76.9%, which was much higher than the 61.7% retention of the pristine sample. This study highlights the great potential of surface-bulk phase differentiated engineering for stabilizing Ni-rich cathodes, providing a feasible pathway for the development of high-energy-density LIBs.

Low ionic conductivity and low Li⁺ transference numbers limit the practical application of polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based polymer solid electrolytes, arising from PEO semi-crystallinity and poor lithium salt dissociation at ambient conditions. Here, we systematically investigate the size-dependent role of CeO 2 fillers by incorporating nanosized (∼5 nm) and submicron particles into PEO-LiTFSI electrolytes. The nanosized CeO 2 , enriched with surface oxygen vacancies and high specific surface area, simultaneously suppresses PEO crystallinity and provides abundant Lewis acid sites that immobilize TFSI⁻ via Lewis acid-base interactions, increasing the mobile Li + carrier concentration. As a result, the nanosized CeO 2 -based composite electrolyte exhibits an ionic conductivity of 5.95 × 10 –5 S/cm at room temperature (2.4 × higher than pristine PEO) and a Li⁺ transference number of 0.30, nearly fourfold higher than the filler-free system (0.08). In addition, it delivers a widened electrochemical stability window of ∼4.9 V, a high critical current density of 0.8 mA/cm², and stable Li||Li symmetric cycling over 600 h, substantially outperforming both the submicron CeO 2 -based composite and the filler-free electrolytes. Herein, a novel CeO 2 -supported CuO composite (denoted as CuO/CeO 2 ) is rationally designed and synthesized via a facile strategy for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade fluorinated antibiotic (namely florfenicol). Benefiting from the synergistic effects between CeO 2 and CuO, abundant Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ and Cu + /Cu 2+ redox couples and oxygen vacancies are formed in the composite, which can significantly accelerate interfacial charge transfer and provide sufficient active sites. The optimized CuO/CeO 2 catalyst shows exceptional catalytic performance, achieving 95.9% removal efficiency of florfenicol within 16 min, together with excellent pH adaptability, anti-interference capacity, and reusability. The mechanistic analysis reveals that PMS is firstly adsorbed on the CuO/CeO 2 surface to form CuO/CeO 2 -PMS* complexes, which then undergoes disproportionation to produce 1 O 2 . Meanwhile, O 2 •– can also transform PMS into SO 5 •‒ , which further decomposes into 1 O 2 . The nonradical pathway dominated by 1 O 2 is responsible for the degradation of florfenicol, whereas radical species and high-valent copper contribute minimally. All in all, this work provides a high-efficiency strategy for selective 1 O 2 generation in advanced oxidation processes, offering a promising approach for fluorinated antibiotic wastewater remediation.

Conventional Ni-based catalysts often exhibit limited metal-support interactions (MSI) and limited density of active interfacial sites, which significantly restrict their low-temperature activity for CO 2 methanation. In this study, we report a binary inverse-structured CeO 2 /Ni catalyst synthesized via a facile one-pot sol-gel method. The optimal 10% CeO 2 /Ni catalyst achieved a CO 2 conversion of 85.4 ± 0.5% with 98.8 ± 0.2% CH 4 selectivity at 200 °C under a gas hourly space velocity of 12,000 mL·g cat −1 ·h −1 during 150 h long-term stability test, substantially outperforming the conventional 10% Ni/CeO 2 catalyst. Comprehensive characterizations collectively indicate that the enhanced low-temperature performance arises from synergistic effects induced by the inverse architecture. The MSI facilitates hydrogen spillover from metallic Ni to CeO 2 , while enriched interfacial oxygen vacancies provide abundant active sites for CO 2 adsorption and activation. In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy results further suggest that the inverse structure steers the reaction toward a highly efficient formate-mediated pathway. This work highlights structural inversion as a facile and effective design strategy to reinforce MSI, offering a promising approach for developing high-efficiency low-temperature CO 2 hydrogenation catalysts. A Fe 3 O 4 -VB 2 @CeO 2 ternary nanozyme was designed for METH detection. • Selective recognition of METH over HER/MOR via –NH and electrostatic attraction. • The sensor shows a low LOD of 3.4 ng mL −1 and a wide linear range. • It enables on-site colorimetric detection in serum with good specificity. Selective detection of methamphetamine (METH) over other illicit drugs is essential for forensic analysis and clinical screening, yet conventional methods are expensive, complex, and unsuited for on-site use. Herein, we developed a colorimetric platform based on a Fe 3 O 4 -VB 2 @CeO 2 ternary composite nanozyme for specific METH recognition. The nanozyme was synthesized via a two-step solvothermal method, where Fe 3 O 4 acts as the magnetic core, riboflavin (VB 2 ) serves as an electron mediator, and CeO 2 provides abundant catalytic active sites. Mechanistic studies (FT-IR, XPS, Zeta potential) suggest that METH is adsorbed onto the nanozyme surface through a combination of electrostatic interactions and other non-covalent forces, potentially including hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking interactions. This adsorption appears to modulate the surface chemistry and interfacial electron transfer dynamics, which may contribute to the suppressed generation of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and the reduced peroxidase (POD)-like activity of the nanozyme. Under optimized conditions, the colorimetric signal shows an excellent linear relationship with the logarithm of METH concentration from 0.005 to 12 μg/mL, with a detection limit of 3.4 ng/mL. The sensor exhibits high specificity for METH, with negligible response to heroin (HER) or morphine (MOR), and shows negligible interference from various metal ions, amino acids, metabolites, and serum components. This work presents a visual strategy for on-site rapid METH detection and offers a plausible mechanistic interpretation of nanozyme inhibition based on indirect evidence. Selective production of ketone-rich bio-oil from biomass pyrolysis vapors remains challenging because catalyst acidity/basicity, redox properties, and defect chemistry must be precisely balanced. In this work, a series of CaO–CeO 2 composite oxides with a Ca/(Ca+Ce) molar ratio of 0.3 were synthesized by co-precipitation and calcined at different temperatures for the ex-situ catalytic pyrolysis of corn stover holocellulose. Catalytic performance was evaluated by Py-GC/MS and a two-stage fixed-bed reactor, while the catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, XPS, TEM, and EDS. The results showed that calcination temperature significantly affected crystallite size, surface area, and defect density, thereby governing ketone selectivity. Among the catalysts, Ca 0.3 Ce 0.7 O 2-δ -600 exhibited the highest ketone content of 47.50% in Py-GC/MS, which was associated with its small crystallite size (15.7 nm), relatively high specific surface area (40.59 m 2 /g), and abundant surface oxygen vacancies. In fixed-bed experiments, lowering the catalytic-bed temperature from 600 to 450 °C reduced the gas yield from 62.00% to 51.63% and increased the liquid yield from 19.56% to 29.76%. Meanwhile, the relative ketone content in bio-oil reached a maximum of 33.19%, while the acid fraction decreased to 4.6%. After three consecutive cycles, the catalyst still maintained high ketone contents, and regeneration restored more than 95% of the initial performance. These results demonstrate that defect-engineered Ca–Ce composite oxides are effective and stable catalysts for producing ketone-rich bio-oil under relatively mild catalytic conditions.

An ultra-smooth silicon carbide (SiC) wafer surface is critical for the performance and longevity of semiconductor, optoelectronic, and high-temperature devices. In this study, a novel photocatalytic chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) strategy is proposed using Ag-loaded CeO 2 abrasives, in which Ag establishes strong electronic metal–support interactions (EMSI) with CeO 2 . This system achieves an ultra-low surface roughness of 0.086 nm while maintaining a high material removal rate of 445.5 nm/h. Under UV illumination, Ag nanoparticles function as electron sinks, suppressing electron–hole recombination and promoting the generation of reactive oxygen species (•OH and •O 2 − ), which rapidly oxidize the SiC surface into a softer SiO 2 layer. Concurrently, oxygen vacancies in CeO 2 act as critical active sites for Ce–O–Si bond formation, facilitating mechanical removal. The incorporation of Ag also effectively stabilizes oxygen vacancies by suppressing their passivation in strongly oxidizing slurries, thereby preserving their reactivity and enhancing the mechanical removal efficiency. This CeO 2 -based metal–support architecture furnishes advanced mechanistic insights and strategic design principles for CMP processes predicated on oxidation-facilitated removal pathways.

Acetylene is of great significance for early warning gas of thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this work, we designed a structure of nanoparticle decorated In 2 O 3 /CeO 2 nanofibers and prepared them by electrospinning. Then we regulated the sensing properties by doping Ag, and acquired an optimal sensor for detecting C 2 H 2 gas. Morphology and structure have been characterized. The gas sensor exhibited good response for acetylene. In a low temperature of 160 °C, the response (R a /R g ) exceeded 9.7 in C 2 H 2 gas with a concentration of 100 ppm. Rapid response in 45 s, and outstanding long-term stability have also been proved. The key point was that the sensor can all achieve a response over 2 within the temperature range of 20 °C to 220 °C. This temperature range coincides with the internal temperature variation range of LIB cells including the normal condition and early stage of thermal runaway. Meanwhile, the reproducibility of electrospinning method has already been verified. Furthermore, we fabricated the LIBs implantable sensor and tested its built-in stability, then we found that the sensor had a highly differentiated response signal to distinguish C 2 H 2 gas and temperature. Finally, according to the nanostructure of sensing materials, acetylene sensing mechanism has been proposed.

Identification of active sites governing the performance of indoor formaldehyde (HCHO) oxidation at ambient temperature and low humidity is crucial for developing improved catalysts, but remains challenging. It has recently been discovered that the effective dissociation of water is of importance for HCHO oxidation at low humidity. Here, we have elaborately designed a Pt supported on three-dimensionally ordered mesoporous CeO 2 catalyst (Pt/kit-CeO 2 ). The Pt/kit-CeO 2 catalyst achieves ∼ 95 % CO 2 yield for a long time. The results indicate that the abundant oxygen vacancies and single coordination-unsaturated Ce sites on mesoporous CeO 2 enhance H 2 O dissociation, leading to the generation of a substantial amount of terminal hydroxyl groups (OH t ). These OH t groups promote the oxidation of intermediate dioxymethylene (DOM) and formate species, thereby regulating the catalytic activity. Additionally, the dispersed Pt facilitates the activation of O 2 , generating active oxygen species (O*) that work synergistically with OH t groups to promote the conversion of formates into CO 2 . The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) further elucidated the mechanism of catalyst promoting HCHO oxidation: HCHO (+O*) → DOM (+OH t ) → HCOO – /HCOOH (+OH t /O*) → CO 3 2– → CO 2 . We anticipate that this knowledge will inspire the development of Pt-based catalysts specifically tailored for low humidity.

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), a pivotal hydrolase in human tissues, serves as a key biomarker for disease diagnostics. Here, we report a hollow AuAg@CeO 2 plasmonic nanozyme engineered for ALP detection through triple synergistic catalysis. The hierarchically designed hollow architecture enhances near-infrared (NIR) photon capture via multiscale light scattering, while the AuAg-CeO 2 heterojunction enables directional charge transfer. ALP-mediated ascorbic acid generation triggers a cascade mechanism: (1) plasmonic hot electrons regenerate CeO 2 oxygen vacancies to optimize H 2 O 2 adsorption; (2) photothermal activation facilitates H 2 O 2 dissociation; and (3) localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) amplifies interfacial electron kinetics. This synergy boosts its peroxidase-like activity, achieving nanomolar ALP sensitivity—a 100-fold improvement over commercial kits within 10-min. Integrated smartphone-based colorimetric dual-mode analysis enables cross-validated ALP quantification with <10 % matrix interference, validated by human samples with 94.8–105.4 % recovery. By deciphering structure-LSPR-activity correlations, this work pioneers adaptive nanozyme design and intelligent diagnostic platforms for precision medicine, bridging critical gaps in point-of-care testing and early disease surveillance.

The continuous release of harmful gases and increased industrial activities has made environmental monitoring essential for evaluating their impact on human health and ecosystem. In this study, a spherical nanostructure of Nickel (Ni) doped CeO 2 was derived from hydrothermally synthesized cerium-based metal-organic framework (Ce-MOF) via MOF encapsulation-calcination method for ultrasensitive detection of H 2 S at ppb level. The physical characterizations and microstructure of the Ni-CeO 2 composite revealed porous surface with a hollow spherical framework structure. The H 2 S gas-sensing performance of CeO 2 increased with Ni doping and exhibited remarkable sensitivity up to 100 ppb at low operational temperature. Notably, Ni-CeO 2 -6 composite shows an improved response of 108 (R a /R g ) at an operational temperature of 100°C. Furthermore, NC-6 displays good linearity (R 2 =0.998) towards H 2 S concentration with a low detection limit (8.68 ppb). The composite nanostructure shows good humid tolerance with minimum response deviation (6 %), on increasing the relative humidity (RH) from 15 % to 60 % at room temperature. In addition to this, the composite nanostructure shows excellent selectivity towards H 2 S, combined with good repeatability, and sustained stability. The enhanced response of Ni-doped CeO 2 can be correlated with increased surface area, porous morphology, and reactive oxygen sites on the surface. The study reveals the synergistic interplay of MOF-derived framework and Ni doping for increasing oxygen vacancies and enhancing the surface reactivity for improved gas-sensing performance.

Iron-based metal-organic framework (MOF) nanozymes have garnered considerable attention owing to a large specific surface area, adjustable porosity, large Fe-O clusters, and unsaturated Fe sites. However, the sluggish charge-transfer rate and restricted active sites of the nanozymes lead to poor enzyme-like activity and further impede their biomimetic catalysis. Herein, a three-channel electron-engineered Fe-88A@CeO 2 /carbon dots (Fe-88A@CeO 2 /CDs) nanozyme is proposed for efficient biomimetic catalysis. Fe-88A@CeO 2 /CDs nanozyme is prepared by incorporation of CeO 2 and CDs into the porosity of Fe-88A. Specifically, the original Fe (II)/Fe (III) and the introduced Ce (III)/Ce (IV) redox couples of the nanozyme constitute a dual electron transfer channel. Furthermore, the presence of CDs produces another electron transfer channel. The three-channel electron engineering strategy for nanozymes can accelerate the electron transfer process accompanied with more active sites, thereby greatly enhancing the oxidase-like activity of Fe-88A@CeO 2 /CDs for biomimetic catalysis. The nanozyme can efficiently convert oxygen to · O 2 − ${\mathrm{O}}_2^ - $ , oxidizing colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue ox-TMB, and meanwhile the ox-TMB effectively quenches the fluorescence of CDs. As proof of concept, the nanozyme is utilized to construct a colorimetric-fluorescence bimodal immunosensor for monitoring Staphylococcal enterotoxin B with excellent performance. This work provides promising insight into designing excellent nanozymes for effective biomimetic catalysis in various fields.
