A fluorine-free hydrophilic coating was fabricated on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes using sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS), nano-silica (SiO 2 ), and ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) through a simple immersion–drying process. The modification aimed to improve membrane wettability, permeability, and chemical stability. FTIR, XPS, SEM, and AFM analyses confirmed the formation of a uniform organic–inorganic composite coating. AFM further showed that the characteristic granular morphology and surface roughness changed little after immersion in acidic, alkaline, and oxidative solutions, indicating good nanoscale structural stability under harsh conditions. At the optimal composition (SDBS:SiO 2 :EVOH = 2:1:1), the water contact angle decreased from 124.8° for pristine PTFE to 60.6°, while the pure water flux reached 3727.99 L m −2 h −1 . The modified membrane also exhibited high flux recovery after bovine serum albumin fouling, with a flux recovery ratio of 92.3%. In oil–water separation tests, the membrane achieved separation efficiencies above 98% and maintained stable performance during three consecutive filtration cycles. In addition, stable wettability and permeation performance were retained after 1-week immersion in solutions ranging from pH 1–14. The results indicate that the EVOH-stabilized SiO 2 /SDBS coating provides an effective, PFAS-free, and scalable strategy for preparing durable hydrophilic PTFE membranes under harsh operating conditions.

Upconversion luminescent materials have broad application prospects in lighting, display, and laser technology. However, single-phase systems are constrained by performance bottlenecks, making it difficult to simultaneously achieve high temperature sensitivity and tunable luminescence. To address this challenge, (Yb x Er 1-x ) 2 SiO 5 /SiO 2 multiphase composite phosphors are synthesized using a low-temperature (300 °C) hydrothermal method. Under 976 nm excitation, the material exhibits concentration-dependent luminescence: as the Yb fraction increases, the red emission at 660 nm continuously enhances, while the green emission shows initial enhancement followed by suppression. This behavior is attributed to an energy back-transfer mechanism between Yb 3+ and Er 3+ ions. Regarding temperature sensing, a highly repeatable thermal response is observed through the fluorescence intensity ratio of Er 3+ levels. Specifically, the thermally coupled levels show a relative sensitivity of 1.91% K −1 , while the non-thermally coupled levels exhibit an absolute sensitivity of 0.1063 K −1 . Furthermore, precise adjustment of Yb 3+ content, excitation power, or temperature enables continuous color tuning from green to red. This work simultaneously realizes high-precision temperature sensing and dynamic luminescence color control in upconversion materials, providing novel design concepts and practical pathways for developing multifunctional optical materials.

With the merit of abundant resources, SiO 2 is emerging as a high-capacity and cost-effective anode for lithium-ion battery (LIB). Nevertheless, the inherently low conductivity and severe volume change of silica result in inferior rate capability and poor cycling life, which impede its practical applications. To overcome these shortcomings, designing novel nanostructures and coating with highly conductive carbon are two commonly used strategies to realize high-performance SiO 2 anodes. Herein, glucose-derived carbon coated SiO 2 nanotubes (SNTs@C) were designed and fabricated through a facile hydrothermal reaction and pyrolysis. Benefiting from the one-dimensional tubular structure and uniform carbon coating, SNTs@C can provide excellent transfer paths for electrons and ions, expose more active sites and accommodate the large volume variation. Therefore, the optimized SNTs@C could deliver a high specific capacity of 615 mAh g −1 , excellent rate capability of 220 mAh g −1 at 3 A g −1 , and superior cycling stability with a capacity of 400 mAh g −1 after 600 cycles. Our work offers a facile but feasible method to fabricate SiO 2 -based anode for LIB.

Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) is widely recognized as a high-performance papermaking filler, yet its extensive industrial application is constrained by its elevated cost. To address this challenge, we developed a sustainable and cost-effective carbonation method to prepare TiO 2 based composite fillers. Using opal as an inorganic support and exploiting the hydrolysis behavior of TiO 2 under CO 2 induction, opal/TiO 2 and SiO 2 /TiO 2 composite materials were successfully synthesized. This approach utilizes inexpensive and renewable carbon dioxide and naturally occurring siliceous minerals, significantly reducing production cost while enhancing the dispersibility and structural stability of TiO 2 . When applied as papermaking fillers, the composites effectively improve paper whiteness, hiding power, and mechanical properties, enabling reduced consumption of pure TiO 2 and promoting environmental and economic benefits. When applied as papermaking fillers, the silica derived from opal imparted a high paper whiteness of up to 94.3%. With increasing TiO 2 content, the opal/TiO 2 composites enhanced paper whiteness from 74.7% to 84.8%. Both composite fillers significantly improved the hiding power of paper, approaching that of pure TiO 2 at high filler loadings. In addition, enhanced filler retention (up to approximately 44.5%) and increased tearing strength (∼106 mN) were achieved, indicating favorable fiber–filler interactions and effective mechanical reinforcement. Beyond practical industrial relevance, this work establishes a novel strategy for fabricating composite materials and elucidates the underlying formation mechanism, offering valuable insights for the development of functional composite fillers. The proposed method demonstrates strong potential for large-scale industrial implementation and contributes to green manufacturing and carbon-utilization technologies.

The MgO-CaO-SiO 2 (MCS) glass system is widely studied due to its applications in various industries, including construction, electronics, and biomedical applications. Although glass materials are known to potentially possess simultaneously corrosion resistance, a relatively high mechanical strength, and an adjustable thermal expansion coefficient, achieving high performance in this glass system remains a long-standing challenge. Herein, we systematically investigated the effects of changes in the CaO/MgO ratio on the structure and properties of the glass, using MCS multicomponent amorphous glass as the target. The results show that with the increase of MgO content, the glass is gradually transformed from a loose network to a dense network, which is manifested by the evolution of Tg and network rigidity, the decreasing trend of CTE, and the redistribution of Q n structural units, BO/NBO ratio, and the local structural relaxation behavior of the glass network skeleton. Moreover, Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ exert both synergistic and competitive effects on the amorphous network structure, thereby significantly enhancing the visible light transmittance, mechanical properties, and chemical stability of the glass. This study not only reveals the mechanism of CaO/MgO double alkaline earth ions in silicate amorphous systems, but also provides a new idea and experimental basis for realizing the precise regulation of glass structure-properties through the design of ion ratios.

Abstract Rapid construction of stable zero-dimensional/two-dimensional (0D/2D) lubricant additives remains challenging because exposed inorganic nanoparticles can agglomerate or separate from layered supports under shear. Here, a SiO2@C/graphite (SiO2@C/G) nanocomposite was prepared by a 2 min microwave treatment of SiO2 nanoparticles, naphthalene, and graphite. In this composite, carbon-coated SiO2 nanoparticles are anchored on and partially intercalated between graphite sheets, forming a plate-sphere-plate architecture. At 1.0 wt % in water, SiO2@C/G reduced the coefficient of friction from 0.74 for water to 0.12 and the wear rate from 4.40 × 10−4 to 0.39 × 10−4 mm3 N−1 m−1. Relative to a microwave-treated SiO2/graphite (SiO2/G) dispersion, the friction coefficient and wear rate decreased by 29.4% and 86.3%, respectively. Worn surface microscopy and elemental mapping indicate that by inhibiting SiO2 delamination, the carbon shell facilitates the synergistic co-transfer of the composite spheres and graphite sheets into the contact zone. The performance is attributed to interfacial conversion from direct SiO2/G contact to a carbon-shell/graphite interface together with rolling-sliding cooperation between the coated spheres and graphite sheets. This work provides a rapid route to carbon-coated 0D/2D nanocomposites for water-based tribological applications.

A mechanistic framework distinguishes strain-driven and charge-compensation pathways in CeO 2 abrasives. • Interfacial electron delocalization weakens subsurface Si-O bonds in CeO 2 /SiO 2 systems. • Optimized Co-doped CeO 2 abrasives achieve higher MRR and excellent surface quality. Atomic-scale manufacturing requires precise material removal at the nanometer level, where chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) serves as a critical process for global planarization in integrated circuit fabrication. CeO 2 abrasives are widely used in CMP due to their chemical affinity for SiO 2 , yet the limited active Ce 3+ sites in pure CeO 2 constrain the material removal rate ( MRR ). Herein, a comparative study of isovalent Zr-doped and aliovalent Co-doped CeO 2 abrasives is reported to deconvolute the distinct roles of lattice strain and charge compensation at the atomic scale. Co doping drives the oxygen vacancy formation energy to −0.81 eV, enabling energetically favorable defect generation, whereas Zr 4+ doping only reduces it to 2.10 eV via lattice contraction. This fundamental difference yields substantially higher Ce 3+ and oxygen vacancy concentrations in Co-doped abrasives. Consequently, the MRR follows a volcano-shaped trend with dopant content for both systems, reaching 388 nm·min −1 (1.74 times that of pure CeO 2 ) for the optimal Co-doped abrasive and 327 nm·min −1 (1.47 times) for the Zr-doped counterpart. All doped abrasives also eliminate localized surface defects, achieving near-atomic smoothness with Ra of 0.146–0.187 nm. Density functional theory reveals that Co doping establishes a delocalized electron transfer network via Co 3d orbital hybridization at the CeO 2 /SiO 2 interface, concurrently strengthening interfacial adhesion (0.1612 eV·Å −2 ), intensifying polarization, and elongating subsurface Si O bonds to 1.767 Å, thereby predisposing these bonds to rupture under mechanical shear. These atomic-scale insights establish a mechanistic framework that quantitatively differentiates the physical and chemical pathways of isovalent versus aliovalent doping, providing a rational basis for designing high-performance CeO 2 -based abrasives toward atomic-scale manufacturing. Lightweight alumina-based aerogels with high thermal stability are promising candidates for high-temperature thermal insulation; however, conventional particle-based aerogels suffer from severe sintering and structural degradation. In this work, controlled amounts of SiO2 were introduced into Al2O3-based nanofibers (NFs) as a secondary phase to regulate their thermal stability, and the obtained SiO2-containing NFs were further assembled into alumina-based nanofiber aerogels (AGs). The SiO2-containing NFs were assembled into three-dimensional porous aerogels via a direct foaming and freeze-drying process, followed by high-temperature calcination. The introduction of SiO2 within the nanofibers effectively suppresses grain growth and delays the γ-Al2O3 to α-Al2O3 phase transformation through a Zener-pinning effect, resulting in a stabilized fibrous skeleton. Consequently, the AGs exhibit reduced density, enhanced porosity, improved compressive strength, and lower thermal conductivity. For aerogels calcined at 1000 °C, higher SiO2 incorporation within the nanofibers markedly improves the compressive response at 40% deformation, increasing the strength from 2.9 to 16.9 kPa, while the thermal conductivity measured at 1000 °C declines to 0.03597 W/(m·K) from an initial value of 0.03903 W/(m·K). This work demonstrates an effective strategy for designing thermally stable and mechanically robust oxide nanofiber aerogels for high-temperature insulation applications by tailoring the SiO2 content in alumina nanofibers.

Inorganic hierarchical porous fibrous membranes demonstrate significant superiority in filtration, adsorption, and catalysis, while the inherent brittleness of inorganic materials and the mechanical fragility from porous structures pose a critical bottleneck to their durability. To overcome this limitation, halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were integrated into the porous fibers, acting as “nano-rebars” to construct a robust skeleton. This structure facilitated efficient stress transfer and dissipation, significantly enhancing the mechanical robustness of the membrane and increasing the tensile strength to more than twofold. Leveraging the natural electret effect of HNTs, the fiber membrane achieved an exceptional filtration efficiency of 99.85% for the most penetrating PM 0.3 through additional electrostatic adsorption effects. Furthermore, the HNTs-optimized hierarchical pore structure resulted in a remarkably low filtration resistance of 55.2 Pa, while the filtration quality factor could reach up to 0.118 Pa −1 . Additionally, the fiber membrane exhibited remarkable photocatalytic efficacy for formaldehyde (HCHO) degradation, attaining a removal rate of 82.77% within an exceptionally short residence time of merely 0.18 s. This study elucidates the structure-property relationship in inorganic fiber membranes and provides a promising strategy for developing robust, multifunctional air purification materials capable of withstanding harsh conditions.

Photothermal superhydrophobic coatings have been recognized as a promising strategy for preventing ice accretion on industrial infrastructures. However, their practical deployment is often limited by mechanical fragility and performance decay under harsh icing conditions. Herein, we report a robust anti-icing coating- denoted as MSP (MXene-F-SiO 2 -PEEK). In this system, MXene acts as a nanoscale photothermal furnace, enabling rapid surface heating under illumination, while F-SiO 2 constructs a hierarchical micro/nanostructure that impairs ice nucleation through exceptional water repellency. The synergistic interplay between the photothermal effect and superhydrophobicity results in a remarkable freezing delay—three times longer than that of bare stainless steel—and enables rapid deicing within 181 ± 4 s under 0.2 kW/m 2 illumination. Moreover, the intrinsic self-lubricating property of MXene and the robust adhesion provided by the PEEK matrix collectively endow the coating with outstanding mechanical durability, maintaining its performance after extensive abrasion. This MSP coating strategy offers a promising and scalable solution for combating ice accretion and providing lubrication in dynamic systems, such as mechanical joints, operating under demanding low-temperature and high-humidity conditions.

Commercial polypropylene (PP) separators offer low cost and established manufacturability, but their limited electrolyte affinity and thermal dimensional stability can restrict their performance in sodium-ion batteries. In this study, a commercial Celgard 2400 separator was modified through a multistep route comprising polydopamine (PDA) deposition, L-lysine-assisted SiO 2 colloid treatment, and a final 1,1′-carbonyldiimidazole-assisted interfacial treatment. A binder-assisted PP-SiO 2 separator was used as a physical-coating control. SEM, EDS, and ATR-FTIR supported the formation of a relatively dispersed SiO 2 -containing surface layer with retained visible microporous features and a modified interfacial chemical environment. PP-PDA-SiO 2 exhibited a total thickness of 26.90 ± 0.36 μm and apparent area shrinkage ratios of 18.42 ± 1.44% at 140 °C and 61.17 ± 0.55% at 170 °C. Its transverse maximum engineering stress reached 16.12 ± 0.38 MPa, while the estimated terminal strain decreased to 58.1 ± 3.8%. The apparent electrolyte contact angle decreased to 20.63 ± 0.80° after 10 s. Its effective ionic conductivity was 0.780 ± 0.038 mS cm −1 , compared with 0.556 ± 0.012 mS cm −1 for pristine PP. PP-SiO 2 showed faster apparent wetting and a higher effective ionic conductivity of 0.878 ± 0.056 mS cm −1 , while PP-PDA-SiO 2 exhibited the more favorable overall electrochemical response. It retained 114.33 ± 2.28 mAh g −1 after 50 cycles at 100 mA g −1 with a capacity retention of 87.99 ± 0.20%, and delivered 88.97 ± 2.10 mAh g −1 at 500 mA g −1 . Equivalent-circuit fitting yielded the lowest combined R 1 + R 2 resistance contribution of 0.1169 ± 0.0067 kΩ for PP-PDA-SiO 2 . These results show that separator performance depends on the combined effects of surface-layer morphology, thickness, retained pore features, electrolyte wettability, separator-level ionic transport, and interfacial electrochemical response. The observed improvements are attributed to the complete multistep modification route, while the independent contribution of each processing step remains unresolved.

The safety and reliability of dry-type film capacitors depend critically on the insulation performance of their dielectric films. Polypropylene (PP) films serve as primary dielectric materials due to their superior insulation properties, high mechanical strength, and excellent heat resistance. With increasing transmission voltages and equipment miniaturization trends, enhancing dielectric film insulation is crucial to ensure ultra-high-voltage (UHV) transmission security. This study incorporates a fluorinated functional layer–modified nanofiller, MMT@T@S-F (MMT@TiO 2 @SiO 2 -F), into PP films via bulk modification. Film breakdown tests demonstrate that at 25 °C, 50 °C, and 75 °C, PP/MMT@T@S-F films exhibit DC breakdown strength increases of 41.26%, 36.26%, and 32.98% respectively, compared to pure PP films. Micro-nano structural analysis reveals elevated interfacial energy levels in MMT@T@S-F nanoparticles. Simultaneously, the organic fluorine modification introduces high-energy charge traps into PP films, further reducing free-moving carriers while maintaining functional effectiveness at elevated temperatures.
