A Hierarchical Core-Shell Structure of NiO@Cu2O-CF for Effective Non-Enzymatic Electrochemical Glucose Detection

Yueyun Huang,Jiahua You,Yingru Ding,Yun Xie,Ting Wang,Fanglong Zhu,Weiping Gong,Zhenting Zhao

Non-enzymatic glucose detection is an effective strategy to control the blood glucose level of diabetic patients. A novel hierarchical core–shell structure of nickel hydroxide shell coated copper hydroxide core based on copper foam (Ni(OH)2@Cu(OH)2-CF) was fabricated and derived from NiO@Cu2O-CF for glucose sensing. Cyclic voltammetry and amperometry experiments have demonstrated the efficient electrochemical catalysis of glucose under alkaline conditions. The measurement displays that the fabricated sensor exhibits a detection scale of 0.005–4.5 mM with a detection sensitivity of 4.67 µA/µM/cm2. It has remarkable response/recovery times in respect of 750 μM glucose (1.0 s/3.5 s). Moreover, the NiO@Cu2O-CF shows significant selectivity, reliable reproducibility and long-term stability for glucose determination, suggesting it is a suitable candidate for further applications.

Zhenyue Zou,Yan Qin,Huadong Fu,Di Zhu,Zhuangzhuang Li,Zhixiong Huang

Carbon fiber-reinforced ceramicizable phenolic resin matrix composites have been widely used in the field of thermal protection materials. In this paper, the ZrO 2f -coated C f (ZrO 2f /C f ) hybrid fibrous reinforcements were designed to improve oxidation resistance of carbon fiber and ceramicizable composites reinforced by ZrO 2f /C f hybrid fibrous reinforcements were prepared to investigated oxidation resistance and mechanical properties of the composites at high temperature. The results show that ZrO 2f /C f hybrid fibrous reinforcements have good thermal stability and high oxidation resistance, and its ceramicizable composites have good bending strength at high temperature. Weight loss rate of the composites is only 21 %, and bending strength can be as high as 39 MPa when ablation time was 12 min at 1400 °C.

Magnetic cobalt ferrite/reduced graphene oxide (CF/rGO) porous balls for efficient photocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline

Jingzhen Wang,Linlin Zang,Libin Wang,Yutong Tian,Zhiyu Yang,Yumei Yue,Liguo Sun

Photocatalytic degradation is an effective technique for removing antibiotics from contaminated water . The kernel of photocatalytic degradation lies in the design and preparation of high-performance and recyclable catalysts. Herein, magnetic porous cobalt ferrite/reduced graphene oxide (CF/rGO) balls were prepared by calcination of spherical composites obtained via modified microfluidic method for effective photocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline (OTC). The strong interfacial interaction between rGO and cobalt ferrite nanoparticles in porous balls enhanced electron transfer , charge separation and light absorption . Porous spherical structure was favorable for light harvesting. The catalyst could rapidly and efficiently absorb OTC. These characteristics were beneficial to the enhancement of photocatalytic efficiency. The optimized sample (CF/rGO-0.2) exhibited an excellent apparent rate constant (0.0410 min −1 ) for OTC degradation under visible light irradiation, which was 3.73 times that of CF/rGO-0 (0.0110 min −1 ). CF/rGO-0.2 had excellent stability in cycle experiments and could be quickly recovered by magnets. The trapping experiments showed that hole (h + ) and superoxide radicals (·O 2 - ) acted an extremely important role in degradation of OTC, thus suggesting a possible photocatalytic reaction mechanism. This work provides a potential photocatalyst for antibiotic removal from water.

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites with Enhanced Interfacial Properties Based on Electrostatic Assembled FGO / Oxidized CF

Jinfeng Tian,Tong Sun,Baowei Qiu,Xueqin Zhang,Shuang Xia,Yang Chen,Huawei Zou,Mei Liang

Interfacial properties play a critical role in the performance of carbon fiber-reinforced composites (CFRPs). However, poor interfacial interactions between carbon fiber (CF) and polymer matrix often limit the performance improvement of CFRPs. In the present work, ethylenediamine functionalized graphene oxide (FGO) and oxidized-carbon fiber (oxidized-CF) are applied to prepare CFRPs through electrostatic self-assembly. Results of Raman, TGA, SEM, and dynamic contact angle analyses confirm that FGO nanosheets are tightly bonded onto the oxidized-CF surface. DMA results show a small increase of T g of the oxidized-CF-FGO composites, as well as a great increment of energy storage modulus (E') compared to that of the untreated CF composites, which indicates an enhancement of interfacial properties. More importantly, the interfacial shear strength shows a great improvement of 30.4%, reaching 58.7 MPa. The interfacial enhancement mechanisms are further discussed based on the microstructure and performance evaluation results.

Interfacial properties of PPBES/CF composites reinforced by ammonified carbon fibers through thiol-ene click reaction

Shan Cheng,Mengting Li,Nan Li,Zifei Ren,Haoyue Hao,Jia Liu,Jiayi Wen,Bing Wang,Jingyao Feng,Fangyuan Hu,Yousi Chen,Shouhai Zhang,Xigao Jian

Our previous work has shown that the amino group is beneficial to improve the interface properties of PPBES/CF composites. However, the existing methods for introducing amino groups have many reaction steps, long reaction time and harsh reaction conditions. A one-step efficient click reaction can effectively avoid the above disadvantages. In this paper, 2-aminoethanethiol (AET) was grafted to CF via a thiol-ene click reaction. The reaction time has been reduced from over 9 h to just 1.5 h. The successful introduction of amino group into CF was testified by FTIR, Raman and XPS . The influence of different ratios of CF:AET on the interfacial properties of the composites was studied emphatically. When CF: AET was 1:3 (T3), the composite exhibited optimal mechanical properties . The ILSS and flexural strength of the resulting composite increased by 24.45% and 33.1%, respectively. The T g of the PPBES/T3 composite was increased to 242 °C as verified by DMA .

Enhancing interfacial locking of the CF and PBPESK resin by in-situ electrochemical deposition of MOF nanoparticles

Wenqi Zhao,Hang Jia,Yue Qiao,Yu Zhang,Junyi Wu,Xigao Jian,Cheng Liu

The interfacial bonding of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites plays a critical role in the overall performance of the composites. Poor interfacial bonding leads to catastrophic damage of composites when subjected to external loads. In this study, three-dimensional (3D) NH 2 -UiO-66 nanoparticles in-situ synthesis on the carbon fiber (CF) surface using an electrochemical method was achieved facilely and efficiently to enhance the interfacial adhesion of CF/PBPESK composites. The influence of incorporating 3D NH 2 -UiO-66 nanoparticles into the interphase on the interfacial and mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced composites was systematically investigated. The NH 2 -UiO-66 nanoparticles significantly increased the carbon fibers surface energy. The flexural, interlaminar shear and interfacial shear strength of the N–CF–6min/PBPESK composite were improved by 19 %, 31 %, and 93 %, respectively, compared to the D-CF/PBPESK composite. Furthermore, the interfacial failure mechanism of the composites was investigated. This approach offered a simple and efficient strategy for the in-situ synthesis of interfacial phase characterized by robust mechanical locking effects.

Effect of pyrolytic carbon coating on the microstructure and fracture behavior of the Cf/ZrB2-SiC composite

Dongyang Zhang,Ping Hu,Shun Dong,Qiang Qu,Xinghong Zhang

The high sintering temperature and interface interaction seriously degraded the toughening effects of continuous carbon fiber in ZrB 2 -SiC ceramic. The pyrolytic carbon coated carbon fiber reinforced ZrB 2 -SiC composite (C f-PyC /ZrB 2 -SiC) with desirable properties was successfully achieved via brushing nano ZrB 2 -SiC slurry followed by spark plasma sintering at relatively low sintering temperature. The fabricated C f-PyC /ZrB 2 -SiC composite presented a non-brittle fracture feature and a remarkable enhancement in comparison with the ZrB 2 -SiC composite reinforced by the as-received carbon fiber (C f-AS /ZrB 2 -SiC). The fracture toughness and critical crack size were increased from 5.97 ± 0.18–7.66 ± 0.24 MPa m 1/2 and from 91.6 to 164.5 µm, respectively. A high work of fracture of 1915 J/m 2 for C f-PyC /ZrB 2 -SiC composite was achieved, almost four times higher than that of the C f-AS /ZrB 2 -SiC composite (463 J/m 2 ). Multiple toughening mechanisms contributed to such enhancement, such as crack deflection, fiber bridging, fiber pull-out and crack branching. This work provides a feasible approach to fabricate high-performance fiber reinforced ceramic composites having a high work of fracture.

The effects of phenolic resin-derived PyC interlayers on microstructure and mechanical properties of Cf/SiC composites

Jie Wang,Xueliang Pei,Jianhai Zhi,Jing Huang,Gaoming Mo,Yanfei Wang,Xiali Zhen,Liu He,Qing Huang

A novel, easy and cost-effective way, infiltration and pyrolysis of phenolic resin solution, was exploited to prepare pyrolytic carbon (PyC) interlayers for carbon fiber/silicon carbide (Cf/SiC) mini-composites. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, dynamic contact angle measurement and scanning electron microscope were carried out to characterize chemical structure of carbon fibers (CFs), wetting properties between CFs and phenolic resin solution and microstructure of CFs and their composites, respectively. Remarkably, SEM results showed regulation of uniformity and thicknesses of PyC interlayer could be achieved through controlling the concentration of phenolic resin solution and oxidation condition of CFs. When CFs were treated by 10 min' oxidation with 40 mg/L ozone followed by dip-coating with 4 wt% phenolic solution, uniform PyC interlayer with approximately 120 nm were prepared on CFs. The corresponding Cf/SiC specimens had the largest increase in tensile strength and work of fracture with the improvement of 26.2% and 71.6% from the PyC-free case.

POSS-polyurethane prepolymer strengthened and toughened CF/epoxy resin composites for room and simulated Arctic ambient temperature

Hailong Liu,Ming Liu,Pengbo Zhang,Kangle Xue,Tongjie Yao,Li Liu,Yudong Huang

As an important material candidate for automotive, aviation, and aerospace, the wide application of carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy resin composites (CFRPs) was important. However, restricted by the low toughness. Herein, octaaminopropyl cage polysilsesquioxane-polyurethane prepolymer (POSS-PU) was synthesized by in-situ polymerization of PU on the POSS, and then employed as the modifier for epoxy resin (EP). Compared to pristine EP, the toughness of the 7.5 wt% POSS 0.5 -PU/EP was increased by 115.3 % without compromising the tensile strength and T g . The unnotched impact strength , interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), and flexural strength of the CFRPs prepared from the modified EP were increased by 73.5 %, 7.5 %, and 42.4 %, compared to CF/EP. Additionally, the mechanical properties of CFRPs maintained a substantial improvement under low-temperature, and the CF/7.5 wt% POSS 0.5 -PU/EP was increased by 72.9 % (impact strength) and 21.7 % (ILSS), compared to those of CF/EP. Compared to the improvement in the toughness of CFRPs at room temperature , the retention rate of toughness enhancement at low temperature was approximately 100 %. CFRPs prepared by POSS x -PU/EP offered outstanding mechanical properties and hence showed great potential for future industrial applications.

In situ preparation of Co3O4/CF flexible composites with core-shell structure as high-performance microwave absorbers

Xiaowei Liu,Konghu Tian,Chao Zhang,Jing Wang,Yufei Li,Lixin Xu,Chulgyu Jhun,Liang Zhang

This study obtained cobalt nitrate (Co 3 O 4 )/carbon fibers (CF) composites with a core-shell structure using in situ Co 3 O 4 growth on lightweight and flexible hydrophilic CF through a hydrothermal synthesis method and simple heat treatment to improve the attenuation of microwaves and their absorption properties. The urea content was adjusted to tune the needle-like morphology of Co 3 O 4 . The results showed that sample S3 had excellent microwave absorption (MA) performance with a minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of −61.55 dB at a thickness of 4.75 mm. However, the thickness corresponding to the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, RL<-10 dB) of 4.72 GHz was only 1.88 mm, covering almost the entire Ku band. CF, as the core of structures, significantly impact microwave reflection. However, the Co 3 O 4 shell coating dominated the dielectric loss of the Co 3 O 4 /CF composite, and its MA performance improved with the refinement of the Co 3 O 4 structures. This study provided a practical solution for preparing lightweight and efficient transition metal oxide and carbon-based MA composites.

A CF/MXene/FeS Composite Anode for Enhanced Power Generation and Charge Storage in Microbial Fuel Cells

Wei Xu,Zhichao Chen,Guofeng Duan,Yuyang Wang,Hristo Nenov

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are promising bioelectrochemical systems for simultaneous wastewater treatment and energy recovery. However, their practical application is still limited by insufficient power output and weak transient energy-supply capability under fluctuating operational conditions. Herein, a bifunctional CF/MXene/FeS composite anode was fabricated through a one-step hydrothermal strategy to simultaneously enhance electricity generation and capacitive charge storage in MFCs. Unlike conventional bioanode modifications that primarily target conductivity enhancement alone, the constructed hierarchical composite integrates conductive MXene nanosheets and electroactive FeS phases to synergistically improve extracellular electron transfer and interfacial charge-storage behavior. The modified electrode exhibited enhanced surface roughness, abundant electroactive sites, and improved biofilm-supporting interfaces. Benefiting from the integrated conductive and electroactive composite framework, the CF/MXene/FeS anode achieved a maximum power density of 1.69 W/m2, which was 70.7% higher than that of pristine CF, together with an increased open-circuit voltage of 0.711 V. In addition, the composite electrode delivered a high total charge density of 13,192.09 C/m2under the C900/D900 condition. Microbial community analysis further revealed substantial enrichment of electroactive bacteria, with the relative abundance of Geobacter increasing from 0.0058% to 22.84%. This work provides a promising strategy for integrating electricity generation and transient energy storage in bioelectrochemical systems, offering potential applications for energy-buffered MFCs under fluctuating power-demand conditions.

One-step hydrothermal synthesis of Cu0/P2Mo18/CF tandem catalytic electrode for electrocatalytic nitrate to Ammonia conversion

Yunqing Zhu,Sixiang Mao,Tian Wang,Fan Pan,Kejing Zhang,Shanshan Yu,Chuanyi Wang

Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (eNO 3 RR) technology offers a sustainable approach for ammonia synthesis due to its high efficiency and environmental compatibility. However, the complex multi-electron reduction process limits catalytic activity and selectivity. Herein, a tandem catalytic system is designed to address this challenge. A Cu 0 /P 2 Mo 18 /CF composite electrode, featuring copper (Cu) nanoparticle- modified P 2 Mo 18 nanocolumns, was prepared via one-step hydrothermal synthesis. The as-fabricated electrode delivers outstanding electrocatalytic performance toward eNO 3 RR. At a potential of −0.7 V vs. RHE, the nitrate (NO 3 − ) removal efficiency and ammonia (NH 3 ) selectivity reach 99% and 91%, respectively, alongside a high NH 3 yield of 666.6 μg·h −1 ·cm −2 . Moreover, the electrode retains superior catalytic activity and stability after 30 consecutive cyclic tests. The superior performance stems from the cascade effect between Cu 0 /Cu + on copper nanoparticles and P 2 Mo 18 . Cu 0 /Cu + facilitates rapid NO 3 − adsorption and reduction to nitrite (NO 2 − ), while electron-rich [P 2 Mo 18 O 62 ] 6− and acidic sites selectively reduce intermediates to NH 3 . In situ characterization further reveals that the reaction pathway proceeds as follows: *NO 3 −  → *NO 2 −  → *NO→*N → *NH → *NH 2  → *NH 3 . This work establishes a polyoxometalate-based cascade catalytic system, providing a novel strategy for designing efficient electrocatalysts for selective nitrate-to-ammonia conversion.
