An Ye,Jiqiu Qi,Yanwei Sui,Fei Yang,Fuxiang Wei,Yezeng He,Qingkun Meng,Zhi Sun

A solid-state energy storage device has been fabricated using FeCo-selenide nanosheet arrays as positive electrode and Fe 2 O 3 nanorod as negative electrode. As an electrode material, the ternary FeCo-selenide nanosheet arrays supported by Ni foam show a highest specific capacitance of 978 F/g (specific capacity of 163 mAh/g) at 1 A/g and a superior cycle behavior of 81.2% are obtained after 5000 cycles at current density of 4 A/g. The asymmetric supercapacitor achieves the maximum energy density of 34.6 W h/kg at the power density of 759.6 W/kg. Furthermore, the superior cycling stability with 83% retention of initial capacitance after 5000 cycles further verify the practical applications of FeCo-selenide//Fe 2 O 3 asymmetric supercapacitor. Meanwhile, the LED bulb and the light board of “CUMT” are lighted by connecting several capacitors to form a series circuit.

FeCo-Doped Hollow Bamboo-Like C-N Composites as Cathodic Catalysts for Zinc-Air Battery in Neutral Media

Liang Yu,Qingfeng Yi,Guang Li,Yao Chen,Xiaokun Yang

Precious metal-free C-N composites possess great significance as replacements for Pt-based catalysts used as cathodes in fuel cells. Herein, we have fabricated the Fe/Co-doped C-N composite catalysts, marked as C-N, Co/C-N and Fe-Co/C-N, by direct pyrolysis of the dried suspensions consisting of cobalt/iron salt, dicyandiamide and glucose. For the Fe-Co/C-N catalyst, its morphological texture is characterized by Fe-Co nanoparticles and hollow bamboo-like nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (C-N nanotubes). The electroactivity of the prepared samples for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in a neutral medium has been investigated. The catalyst Fe-Co/C-N presents the highest ORR current density of 5.1 mA·cm−2 @0.8V (vs Ag/AgCl) in a neutral medium. A zinc-air battery in neutral KNO3 solution, assembled with zinc as the anode and carbon paper loaded by the prepared catalysts as the air electrode (cathode), displays excellent and stable discharge performance. The maximum power density of the Fe-Co/C-N catalyst is 32 mW·cm−2, and the continuous discharge time reaches 209, 155, 17 h at constant discharging current density of 25, 50 and 100 mA·cm−2 respectively. Simultaneously, the air electrode using the Fe-Co/C-N as the catalyst shows good cycle stability and repeatability. Results reveal that the Fe-Co/C-N is a very promising cathodic catalyst applied in neutral zinc-air battery.

Modulating interfacial charge density of FeCo oxyhydroxides via coupling with graphene oxide aerogel for boosting oxygen evolution reaction

Juxiang Tai,Youpeng Bi,Chunsheng Ni,Xiaodong Wu,Tete Daniel Koudama,Sheng Cui,Xiaodong Shen,Xiangbao Chen

Given the sluggish kinetics limiting the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), developing efficient and robust OER catalysts is highly demanded in developing efficient energy conversion technologies. Herein, we have grown FeCo oxyhydroxides on the 3D graphene oxide (GO) framework (FeCo 2 O x (OH) y /GO) via a simple sol-gel process, combined with the supercritical drying technique. The resulting FeCo 2 O x (OH) y /GO aerogel-based electrocatalyst possesses high porosity and a large BET specific surface area with 223.52 m 2 /g, which exposes more active sites, as well as provides diffusion channels for the reaction products. The resulting electrocatalyst requires an overpotential of 305 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , with a low Tafel slope (43.7 mV dec −1 ) and excellent stability, which indicates superior OER catalytic activity to that of the commercial RuO 2 /C under alkaline conditions. Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the synergistic effect between the GO layer and FeCo oxyhydroxides layer has been revealed by the electronic structures calculations . The incorporation of GO results in a negative shift of the d -band center of the surface active sites, indicating a decrease in the binding strength between the catalyst surface and the intermediates, therefore accelerating the OER process.

Construction of dual active sites on diatomic metal (FeCo−N/C-x) catalysts for enhanced Fenton-like catalysis

Zhendong Zhao,Wenjun Zhou,Daohui Lin,Lizhong Zhu,Baoshan Xing,Zhiqi Liu

High metal loading of single-atom catalysts enables excellent catalytic activity, but possibly causes serious aggregation problem. Herein, a series of diatomic FeCo−N/C-x (x represents metal content) were skillfully designed and applied to improve the catalytic activity for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation toward degrading organic micropollutants. The unprecedented dual active sites, referring to Fe(N 3 )−Co(N 3 ) moiety and FeCo alloy, are constructed on the obtained FeCo−N/C-x, thereby exhibiting significantly greater performance toward degrading aqueous phenol (e.g., 0.316 min −1 for FeCo−N/C-3) via PMS activation, compared with those of traditional single-atom Co−N/C (0.011 min −1 ) and Fe−N/C (0.018 min −1 ). Combined experimental and theoretical calculations demonstrate the independent functions of dual active sites, in which Fe(N 3 )−Co(N 3 ) and FeCo alloy can decrease the energy barrier of O−O bond cleaving resulting in the formation of high-valent FeCo O reactive species and singlet oxygen, respectively. This study opens up a new platform toward constructing dual active sites for enhanced Fenton-like catalytic activity.

In-situ growth of bimetallic FeCo-MOF on magnetic biochar for enhanced clearance of tetracycline and fruit preservation

Yi-Cai Jiang,Meng-Fan Luo,Zi-Nuo Niu,Si-Yuan Xu,Yue Gao,Yuan Gao,Wen-Juan Gao,Jing-Jing Luo,Rui-Lin Liu

Magnetic carbon materials as the fascinating scavenger have been used for the purification of antibiotic wastewater. However, a majority of the reported magnetic carbon adsorbents suffer from the poor adsorption capacity and costly preparation costs. Herein, we report an in-situ growth of bimetallic FeCo-metal organic frameworks (MOFs) on waste paper-derived CoFe 2 O 4 /porous carbon via a hydrothermal strategy for reinforced clearance of tetracycline. The adsorption properties and mechanisms were systematically explored. Results revealed that the adsorption isotherms obeyed the Langmuir model, and the pseudo-second-order kinetics model could be well used to describe the current adsorption behavior. The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity of FeCo-MOF@CoFe 2 O 4 /porous carbon toward tetracycline was calculated as 909 mg g −1 , which was significantly higher than that of other reported adsorbents. The ascendant capture property of the current adsorbent was presented under a wide pH range (5.0–12.0) and had excellent resistance to humic acid. In addition, the proposed coating method can also be applied to in-situ grow FeCo-MOF on biomass-derived magnetic porous carbon to enhance removal of tetracycline. Interestingly, the tetracycline adsorbed FeCo-MOF@CoFe 2 O 4 /porous carbon as a sustainable additive was further proved to be used for fruit preservation. Overall, this work provided a new research direction for in-situ architecture of magnetic carbon-based bimetallic MOF materials to treat antibiotic sewage and fruit preservation.

Formamide-soluble solid-state ZnO as Zn source for synthesizing FeCo–NC with ultrahigh oxygen reduction reaction activity

Yanhui Sun,Zongge Li,Yinglong Wu,Jinrui Tian,Yaqun Wang,Miaosen Yang,Guoxin Zhang

The high-cost synthesis of highly dispersed non-noble metal–nitrogen–carbon (MNC) electrocatalysts hinders their practical applications. Here, we have developed a cost/time-efficient synthesis method for MNC electrocatalysts with highly dispersed metal sites, using the commercially available cheap ZnO as the Zn source, reducing the cost of Zn usage by over 80%. Our specially chosen solvent formamide can react with ZnO and allow the formation of nano-sized ZnFeCo–Nx complexes uniformly distributed in the formamide-derived high-N-doped carbon substrate. Further annealing the ZnFeCo–N–C precursor will produce a highly dispersed FeCo–NC target product. Electrochemical measurements show that the prepared FeCo–NC is an excellent electrocatalyst for alkaline oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), rendering superior onset and half-wave potentials of 1.05 and 0.92 V, respectively. The Al–air battery assembled using this also shows a high specific power (204.9 mW cm−2) and a large specific capacity (552 mA h g−1 at 10 mA cm−2), exceeding those of the 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst. Our method may inspire the scalable and low-cost production of highly dispersed MNC electrocatalysts and their wide range of practical applications.

Sacrificial carbon nitride-templated hollow FeCo-NC material for highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction and Al-air battery

Yu Wang,Guoxin Zhang,Mang Ma,Yiyan Wang,Ying Zhang,Xiaoming Sun,Zifeng Yan

Solid-phase templates are commonly used for building hollow-structured carbon materials (CMs) but often demand post treatments to remove templates. Herein, we develop an efficient and general method to construct hollow carbonaceous structure via the templating of sacrificial carbon nitride (termed as f-NC) without post treatment. The f-NC template can be decomposed under high-temperature annealing, additionally, it can serve as N source to enrich the N content. Applying f-NC template, we manage the synthesis of hollow-structured highly dispersed binary FeCo-nitrogen-carbon material (termed as f-NC@FeCo-NC). Its hollow feature is confirmed by direct observation using HRTEM . Meanwhile, Fe/Co in oxidation states have been verified uniformly distributing in heavily N-doped CMs (N content ∼ 13.2 at.%). The resulted f-NC@FeCo-NC, as examined by electrochemical measurements, exhibits highly efficient performance toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline medium. It respectively shows much enhanced onset and half-wave potentials of 1.01 and 0.89 V relative to the FeCo-NC that is obtained without f-NC, in contrast, 20 wt% Pt/C shows 0.95 V onset potential and 0.83 V half-wave potential. The f-NC@FeCo-NC catalyst also shows excellent Al-air battery performance when applied as cathode, which possesses a high open circuit voltage of 1.91 V and a high peak power density of 241 mW cm −2 . We believe this sacrificial f-NC can be applied as general template for the fabrication of other hollow-structured carbon-based materials for broad electrochemical applications.

Nano–Confinement Construction of FeCo@NCNTs nanocomposite for pH–Universal Oxygen Reduction Catalysis and High–power Zn–air battery

Yaqian Dong,Shuyu Yue,Kai Wang,Taotao Li,Tiehua Ma,Dong Guo,Yuxiang Wu,Zhibo Wu,Yaohui Zhang,Liang junfei

The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) pose a critical bottleneck in the energy conversion efficiency of fuel cells and metal–air batteries. Developing non-precious metal catalysts with pH-universal adaptability and high cost-effectiveness is an urgent need in the field. In this study, we introduce an innovative biomass pyrolysis-driven nano-confinement strategy. Expired milk powder and g-C 3 N 4 are utilized as dual-function carbon sources to successfully construct a composite structure of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) encapsulating FeCo alloy nanoparticles (FeCo@NCNT). During high-temperature pyrolysis, the decomposition products of milk powder deposit onto the molten FeCo particles, forming carbon nanotubes, while the decomposition of g-C 3 N 4 provides nitrogen doping and induces periodic distortions in the carbon lattice, resulting in nanoconfined morphology of FeCo@NCNT. This structure formed by N-doped carbon nanotubes encapsulating FeCo alloy enables the catalyst to achieve half-wave potentials of 0.83 V, 0.71 V, and 0.60 V in 0.1 mol·L −1 KOH, 0.5 mol·L −1 H 2 SO 4 , and 0.1 mol·L −1 PBS electrolytes, respectively. The assembled zinc–air battery exhibits an open-circuit voltage of 1.51 V and a peak power density of 169 mW∙cm –2 . This approach provides a new paradigm for biomass waste resource utilization and the design of energy catalysts for pH-universal applications.

Regulation of high-valence W-doped FeCo-LDHs promotes efficient alkaline exchange membrane water electrolysis with long-term stability

Leyi Lu,Xi Luo,Tong Wu,Panpan Gao,Songmei Sun

Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) is a key technology for scalable green hydrogen production. However, its widespread adoption is hampered by the anode's primary challenge—the slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). While transition metal-based materials can improve in activity through doping and morphology control, achieving long-term stability remains challenging. Doping with high-valence metals such as tungsten can modulate electronic structure, facilitate the formation of active high-valence iron, and improve OER activity. In this study, a W-doped FeCo catalyst supported on nickel foam (W–FeCo–NF) was fabricated via a two-stage hydrothermal method. The material showed an overpotential of 347 mV at 100 mA cm −2 (1 M KOH). Moreover, it demonstrated remarkable durability, maintaining stable operation for over 400 h at 200 mA cm −2 in the electrolyzer. This work offers a viable pathway to efficient, durable, and cost-effective OER electrocatalysts, contributing to the advancement of green hydrogen technologies.

A Flexible Hetero-Porous FeCo@C/Carbon Foam/Polythiophene Composite for Integrated Broadband Electromagnetic Attenuation and Infrared Thermal Suppression

Yi Liu,Yahui Wang,Yongke Wang,Rui Xue,Qihang Ren,Chenglong Ding,Zongsheng Chen,Zhigang Li,Xiangyin Lv,Xuesong Deng,Jiaming Shi

The rapid development of multi-band detection technologies has imposed increasingly stringent requirements on materials capable of simultaneously regulating microwave absorption and infrared thermal signatures. A flexible FeCo@C/Carbon Foam/Polythiophene (FCCP) composite film with a hetero-porous architecture is rationally engineered via in situ polymerization to integrate broadband electromagnetic (EM) attenuation and infrared thermal suppression. The hybrid magneto-electric network incorporating conductive polymers enables effective microwave absorption while reducing infrared emissivity. The FCCP composite achieves effective radar cross-section suppression over the entire X-band, together with low infrared emissivity values of 0.63 in the mid-infrared (3-5 μm) and 0.38 in the far-infrared (8-12 μm) regions. Multiphysics simulations based on COMSOL solid heat transfer models elucidate the coupled heat dissipation and radiation behaviors, providing mechanistic insight into infrared thermal regulation. Moreover, the combination of low emissivity and effective thermal management ensures stable infrared suppression under prolonged operation exceeding 24   h. This work demonstrates a materials-architecture-based strategy for integrating EM attenuation, infrared thermal suppression, and thermal management within a single flexible system, offering guidance for the design of next-generation multifunctional compatible materials.

Facile synthesis of ultrafine iron-cobalt (FeCo) nanocrystallite-embedded boron/nitrogen-codoped porous carbon nanosheets: Accelerated water splitting catalysts

Lan Xiao,Yibin Wang,Tingzheng Fu,Qiusen Liu,Fei Guo,Yingjie Zhang,Mian Li,Xiangjie Bo,Tingting Liu

Designing two-dimensional (2D) porous carbon nanosheets is expected to boost the water splitting efficiency of low-cost iron (Fe) and cobalt (Co)-based catalysts. Nevertheless, the aggregations, tedious preparation procedures, and expensive precursors for synthesizing 2D porous carbon nanosheets have hindered their widespread application. Herein, for the first time, we developed a low-cost method for large-scale and rapid synthesis of the three-dimensional (3D) hierarchically porous architectures self-assembled by the ultrafine FeCo nanoparticles embedded and boron/nitrogen-codoped 2D porous carbon nanosheets (denoted as FeCo@BNPCNS). The optimal FeCo@BNPCNS-900 exhibited abundant porous channels, a large surface area , and vast carbon edges/defects. Therefore, 8.10 at% electrochemically active boron (B)/nitrogen (N) centers were doped into the porous carbon nanosheets . In an alkaline solution, the optimal FeCo@BNPCNS-900 nanosheets revealed excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalytic activity , surpassing commercial 20 wt% Pt/C. For instance, the HER potential at 10 mA cm −2 [-50.6 mV vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)] of FeCo@BNPCNS-900 was even 19.3 mV more positive than that of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C (-69.9 mV vs. RHE). Meanwhile, its oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity was just a little worse than ruthenium oxide (RuO 2 ). The water electrolysis cell of FeCo@BNPCNS-900 nanosheets just required a small voltage of 1.589 V for full water splitting to achieve 10 mA cm −2 , even 70.3 mV more negative than that of the state-of-the-art 20 wt% Pt/C||RuO 2 benchmark (1.660 V) with outstanding stability. The perfect 3D hierarchically porous and honeycomb-like architecture, abundant porous channels/mesopores, and uniformly dispersed electrocatalytically active sites on FeCo@BNPCNS-900 nanosheets were responsible for the outstanding water splitting performance. Finally, this study provides an efficient strategy for the large-scale, rapid, and low-cost synthesis of 2D porous carbon nanosheets without using any template, surfactant , or expensive precursors.

A symmetric gradient structure enables robust CNF/FeCo/LM composite films with excellent electromagnetic interference shielding and electrical insulation

Song Yang,Maofei Du,Ying Zhang,Yuhan Wang,Ting Gu,Fei Liu

The exceptional performance of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials often stems from their high conductivity. However, EMI shielding materials with high electrical conductivity pose a risk of current leakage, which is an issue that cannot be ignored. Herein, a unique electrical insulation cellulose nanofiber/ferro cobalt/liquid metal (CNF/FeCo/LM) composite film with a symmetric gradient structure was fabricated using the vacuum-assisted filtration and cold compression techniques. In the CNF/FeCo/LM composite film, CNF/FeCo serves as the electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption layer and electrical insulation protective layer, CNF/FeCo/LM functions as the EMW transmission layer, and the LM acts as the middle EMI shielding enhancement layer. The prepared symmetric gradient CNF/FeCo/LM composite film exhibits a satisfactory EMI shielding effectiveness of 39.32 dB at a thickness of only 0.17 mm, with 20 wt% of LM and 20 wt% FeCo. This performance is attributed to the symmetric gradient composite film “absorption-weak reflection-strong reflection-reabsorption” mechanism. Furthermore, this composite film also exhibits an excellent in-plane thermal conductivity of 4.85 W m−1 K−1 and outstanding volume resistance of 5.58 × 1011 Ω cm. The CNF/FeCo/LM composite film achieves a tensile strength of 56.28 MPa, an elongation at break of 21.47%, and a toughness of 7.2 MJ m−3 due to the interaction between CNF and the LM, along with a zigzag fracture path that develops within the interlayer, which facilitates stress transfer and energy absorption. This work offers a viable approach to designing high EMI shielding materials with electrical insulation, which is crucial for promoting the use of CNF matrix composites in electronic packaging.
