An improved Carbon-Coating Method for LiFePO4/C composite derived from Fe3+ precursor

Rui Rui Zhao,Guo Zheng Ma,Li Cai Zhu,Ai Ju Li,Hong Yu Chen

In this paper, a novel hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC)-assisted carbon-coating method was developed to synthesize LiFePO 4 /C composites. The structure and morphological transformation of the as-prepared samples were studied using a combination of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The particles of the samples obtained were more homogeneous than the reference sample prepared without the addition of HEC and the coated carbon were more uniformly distributed on the LiFePO4 surface. In addition, the HEC-assisted sample exhibited higher capacities and better rate capability in the charge-discharge test, and the charge transfer resistance calculated from the electrochemical impedance spectra data was smaller.

3D graphene aerogel framework enwrapped LiFePO4 submicron-rods with improved lithium storage performance

Xiaohui Tian,Zhonghua Chen,Yanbin Zhu,Xiao Huang,Guan Wu,Yingke Zhou

The three-dimensional (3D) graphene aerogel (GA)-wrapped LiFePO 4 submicron-rod composite (LFP@GA) has been prepared successfully through a solvothermal method followed with rapid freeze-drying. Monodispersed LiFePO 4 submicron-rods are well-enwrapped with the graphene sheets and which further form a highly porous and conductive 3D structure, leading to the overall rapid electron transport of the composite electrode and affording many interwoven pores for fast supply of Li + and storage of electrolyte. Moreover, the combination of the rod-shaped LFP and porous 3D structure can effectively relieve the stress resulted from the structural change during the insertion/deinsertion of Li + . Owing to these particular structure and characteristics, the LFP@GA composite presents a high discharge capacity (162.7 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C), a remarkable rate capacity (119.9 mAh g −1 at 5 C) and an excellent long-term cycle stability after 1000 cycles at 1 C (86.5% capacity retention), which is potential for use in Li-ion batteries.

Double role of silicon in improving the rate performance of LiFePO4 cathode materials

Jian-Wei Zhao,Shi-Xi Zhao,Xia Wu,Hong-Mei Cheng,Ce-Wen Nan

LiFeP 1- x Si x O 4 /(C +  y Li 2 SiO 3 ), (0 ≤  x  ≤ 0.04, 0 ≤  y  ≤ 2%) composites with a particle size of about 200 nm were synthesized via a simple solid state route. In this work, silicon plays double roles-silicon doping in lattice to enhance the electronic conductance of LiFePO 4 , meanwhile Li 2 SiO 3 with high Li-ion conductivity and carbon hybrid coating can decrease the interface resistance between LiFePO 4 grain and electrolyte. In this work, starch and TEOS were used as carbon source and the silicon source respectively. XRD , SEM , TEM, EIS and galvanostatic charge-discharge test are used to characterize these samples. The effects of the modification on the microstructure and electrochemical performances of LiFePO 4 cathodes at 25 °C are systematically investigated. The results show the sample with x  = 0.03 and y  = 1.0  wt % exhibits excellent rate capacity and cycle performance among the investigated materials. Based on half-cell testing, the best sample achieves a high special discharge capacity of 119 mAh g −1 at 5C rate and a capacity of 94 mAh g −1 at the 10C rate with an excellent cycle life in the usual cycling voltage range 2.5–4.2 V. EIS result demonstrates that the R ct of the samples decrease greatly due to the modification of LiFePO 4 via doping and coating.

Interfacial Coupling-Induced Pseudocapacitance in LiFePO4@Polypyrrole Heterostructures Toward High-Rate Lithium Storage

Qi Xiao,Yan Li,Yin-he Zhang,Suping Huang

The olivine-structured LiFePO 4 (LFP) materials are widely used as commercial cathodes due to its high thermal/chemical stability, long cycle life, low price, etc. However, the poor high-rate performance severely hinders its high-power applications due to intrinsically diffusion-controlled lithium storage. Herein, an interfacial coupling-induced pseudocapacitance (ICIPC) strategy to realize high-rate capacity lithium storage of LiFePO 4 @ polypyrrole (LFP@PPY) is provided. The strong interfacial coupling interaction between LFP and polypyrrole (PPY) promotes interfacial pseudocapacitance as a major Li + storage mechanism during the charge/discharge process at high rates. The dynamic combination of interfacial and diffusion lithium storage of electrodes can enhance reaction kinetics, the rate capability and cyclic performance. In addition, the nanoscale PPY coating layer effectively improves the surface conductivity of the LFP particles and the charge transfer kinetics of electrochemical reactions. Therefore, the LFP@PPY cathode exhibits remarkable rate capability with a capacity of 105 mAh g −1 at 10 A g −1 and 84 mAh g −1 at 20 A g −1 and excellent cyclic stability performance with the initial capacity of 106.7 mAh g −1 at 10 C (91.2 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles). The ICIPC strategy may be extended to other cathodes (LiCoO 2 , etc.) to improve the high-rate performance.

Wensong Zou,Xuezhen Feng,Ranhao Wang,Wenfei Wei,Siyuan Luo,Renji Zheng,Dazhong Yang,Hongwei Mi,Hong Chen

Search for simple and efficient recycling methods to utilize spent lithium-ion batteries is crucial for achieving sustainable resource development and reducing the hazardous materials released from the spent batteries. Herein, we have developed a new strategy to utilize the spent LiFePO 4 batteries by utilizing the cathode plate as raw material to synthesize mesoporous core-shell adsorbent Mm@SiO 2 (Mm denoted as the magnetic material) through a simple alkaline leaching process. The as-converted material exhibits excellent adsorption capacity when it has been used to remove heavy metal ions in heavy metal polluted water. The adsorption capacities for Cu 2+ , Cd 2+ , and Mn 2+ have been achieved up to 71.23, 80.31 and 68.73 mg g −1 , respectively. The detailed adsorption mechanism has been elucidated with comprehensive characterization techniques, including TEM , XPS, NEXAS , and EXAFS, the edge shared [Cu 2 O 8 ] bipyramids can be fit against the EXAFS data to represent the atomic-scale local structure after Mm@SiO 2 adsorbs Cu 2+ . The present work demonstrates a novel routine to reutilize the spent lithium batteries , which is of great importance to achieve sustainable development based on the “waste-to-treasure” and “waste-to-control-waste” strategy for simultaneously reducing the hazardous release from industrial solid waste and heavy metal polluted water.

Acid-free mechanochemical process to enhance the selective recycling of spent LiFePO4 batteries

Qiyue Zhang,Ersha Fan,Jiao Lin,Sisheng Sun,Xiaodong Zhang,Renjie Chen,Feng Wu,Li Li

With the large-scale application of LiFePO 4 (LFP) in energy storage and electric vehicles, the recycling of spent lithium LFP batteries has gained more attention. However, recycling spent LFP is less economically feasible owing to the poor economic value of Fe products, which causes a problem for both the efficiency and economy. This work proposes a highly economical acid-free mechanochemical approach for the efficient and selective extraction of lithium (Li) from spent LFP battery cathode materials. The selective release of 98.9 % of Li from the LFP crystal structure is achieved at a reaction time of 5 h, a rotational speed of 500 rpm, and sodium citrate (Na 3 Cit) to LFP mass ratio of 10. Meanwhile, Fe is reserved in the form of FePO 4 in the olivine structure. The use of Na 3 Cit as a co-milling agent ensures a pollution-free recovery process and efficient extraction of Li + . The chelation of Li + with organic ligands (Cit 3- ) is the key to the efficient selective recovery of Li + from the olivine LFP structure via the mechanochemical process. The economic analysis indicates that the method is feasible and ensures industrial viability. The acid-free mechanochemical (MC) process reported in this work provides a novel route to selectively recover Li from spent LFP efficiently and highly economically.

Converting Spent LiFePO4 Battery into Zeolitic Phosphate for Highly Efficient Heavy Metal Adsorption

Wensong Zou,Xuezhen Feng,Wenfei Wei,Yuanhao Zhou,Ranhao Wang,Renji Zheng,Jing Li,Siyuan Luo,Hongwei Mi,Hong Chen

Developing efficient recycling technologies for large-scale spent batteries is the key to build a zero-waste city. Herein, a [Al8.5Fe0.5P12O48]·[C24H72N16]·[Li·4H2O]·[12H2O] (AlFePO-Li) zeolite, crystallizing in space group I4̅3m with a = 16.6778(3) Å, has been constructed via the hydrothermal treatment of spent LiFePO4 battery. Benefiting from the three-dimensional 12-member-ring channels in its structure and chemical adsorption, excellent Pb2+ removal capacity up to 723.8 mg g–1 has been achieved. Detailed adsorption mechanism study revealed that the cation exchange capacity is significantly contributed by ion exchange of the protonated organic amine cations in the zeolite channel and the protons from the framework dangling phosphate group. This work demonstrates a novel method of reutilizing spent LIBs to construct zeolite for heavy metal removal. It is of great importance to achieve sustainable development based on the “resource utilization” and “trash-to-treasure” strategy.

Simplifying and Optimizing Li4SiO4 Preparation from Spent LiFePO4 Batteries with Enhanced CO2 Adsorption

Jiaqi Ruan,Yichao Tong,Jingyu Ran,Changlei Qin

A large amount of spent lithium batteries, especially lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), is discarded due to their limited lifespan and poses a great threat to the environment. At the same time, the potential application of Li4SiO4, an efficient high-temperature CO2 sorbent, is largely limited by the high cost of lithium resources. Thus, the preparation of Li4SiO4 from spent LiFePO4 batteries has great potential for achieving waste recycling and reducing CO2 capture costs. However, the process of recycling spent LiFePO4 batteries to synthesize Li4SiO4 sorbents still needs to be well investigated. This work proposes to simplify the preparation scheme by combing precipitation, Na doping, and synthesis processes and further optimizing the key variables of pH, Na2CO3 ratio, and heating rate. An optimal condition is determined to be pH = 9, Na2CO3 ratio = 11 wt %, and heating rate = 5 °C/min, and the sorbent prepared shows a superior stable CO2 capacity of 0.24 g/g in 80 adsorption/desorption cycles. The work develops an effective Li4SiO4 preparation scheme from spent LiFePO4 batteries with largely enhanced CO2 adsorption performance and reduced cost and could achieve a win–win situation in waste recycling and CO2 mitigation.

Control and influence of morphology, particle size and structure of LiFePO4 on its properties

Xunshuai Yan,Ying Li,Caihong Li,Hongqiang Wang,Tengda Wang,Yihan Ma,Shihui Zhang,Xu Zhang,Weiyan He

The problems of enhancing tap density and electrochemical performance of LiFePO 4 /C were studied when FePO 4 was prepared by in-situ polymerization-precipitation method and LiFePO 4 /C was prepared by carbothermal reduction method. The morphology of LiFePO 4 /C can be controlled by adjusting the preparation conditions of precursor FePO 4 . Spherical morphology of particles is beneficial to improve the tap density and high rate performance of LiFePO 4 /C. Although the high compactness of LiFePO 4 particles results in high tap density, high compactness of particles is not conducive to improving the electrochemical performance of the materials. Therefore, when improving the compactness of materials to increase their tap density, it is necessary to consider their negative impact on electrochemical performance. The influence of filling effects between different particles on improving the tap density was studied. With LiFePO 4 /C prepared by in-situ polymeration-coprecipitation method as the first principal particle size, and LiFePO 4 /C prepared by in-situ polymeration-hydrothermal method as the second principal particle size, when particle size and mass ratios conform to Hudon and Horsfield filling theory, small particles can fill the void formed by the accumulation of large particles. The tap density of LiFePO 4 is 1.3649 g cm −3 , and the specific capacity is 94.85 mA h g −1 at 5C.

Enhanced Electrochemical Performance of Li2ZrO3 coated LiFePO4 as Cathode Material for Lithium Ion Batteries

Ruitong Guo,Huiting Zhu,Xingyao Wang

Li 2 ZrO 3 -coated LiFePO 4 (LFP@C/LZO) was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and ex-situ coating for the first time. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and charge-discharge tests were used to characterize lithium iron phosphate and the influences of different coating amounts on the material were systematically studied. The results show that when Li 2 ZrO 3 is 2 wt%, LFP@C/LZO-2 exhibits excellent electrochemical performance where the initial discharge capacities are 156.7 mAh/g and 111 mAh/g at 0.1 C and 1 C, respectively. And after 200 cycles at 1 C, the capacity can retain 81.62% of the initial value. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) shows that the introduction of Li 2 ZrO 3 can decrease the charge transfer resistance and improve the lithium-ion diffusion rate. The study reveals a moderate amount of Li 2 ZrO 3 can helpfully enhance the electrochemical properties of LFP and broadens options for surface coating of LFP and other electrode materials.

Molten salt-mediated separation and recovery of valuable elements from spent LiFePO4 black mass

Yao Yu,Xiao Yang

Spent LiFePO 4 (LFP) battery black mass (SLFPB) recycling is important and faces significant challenges due to complex composition. This work presents a novel molten CaCl 2 -based leaching-electrolysis method for comprehensive valuable component recovery. This process yields recovery percentages exceeding 95 % for Fe, Cu, and P, 87 % for graphite, and 70 % for Al, while enriching Li in the melt. The molten salt shows potential for cyclic operation. Mechanistically, LiFePO 4 and FePO 4 in SLFPB react with molten CaCl 2 to form metal chlorides, Ca 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl, and Ca 2 PO 4 Cl intermediates, which subsequently dissociate into soluble ions. Most Fe escapes as FeCl 2 vapor. Graphite, due to its lower density, floats to the melt surface. The distinct thermodynamic properties of Fe 2+ , Cu + , and PO 4 3– allow their separation and recovery as metals and P 4 through two-step electrolysis. Differences in leaching and volatilization rates leads to the accumulation of Li. This approach provides a simple pathway for comprehensive SLFPB recycling.

Selective recovery of lithium from spent LiFePO4 batteries based on PMS advanced oxidation process

Zong-Bin Lv,Lei Xu,Chen Chen,Ze-Hang Chen,Ming-Lai Fu,Baoling Yuan

The outstanding performance of LiFePO4 batteries has driven their widespread adoption in electric vehicles and energy storage systems. Consequently, there has been a significant increase in their disposal rate, making the proper handling of Spent LiFePO4 batteries a matter of paramount concern. While various methods for recovering cathode materials from spent LiFePO4 batteries have been extensively researched, the application of advanced oxidation processes for this purpose remains relatively underexplored. Advanced oxidation process (AOP) based on Peroxy-monosulfate (PMS, 2KHSO5-KHSO4-K2SO4) is a widely adopted AOP primarily based on sulfate radicals (SR-AOPs). In this paper, a PMS-based advanced oxidation process is proposed to recover lithium from LiFePO4 batteries. Li+ in LiFePO4 is released into solution by Fe2+ being oxidized, with a Li+ leaching rate of as high as 99.9 %, and the released Li+ is recovered in the form of Li2CO3 after reacting with Na2CO3, and at the same time FePO4 is generated, with its olivine structure remaining unchanged. The optimal experimental conditions were 1.15 times of the theoretical amount of PMS, 10 g/L solid-liquid ratio, 25 °C reaction temperature, and 20 min leaching time. This study provides a new recovery scheme for selective extraction of Li+ from spent LiFePO4 batteries, which is characterized by a simple recovery process and high efficiency.
