Porous N-doped Mo2C@C nanoparticles for high-performance hydrogen evolution reaction

Zhen Hu,Jian Chen,Peiyao Pan,Chao Liu,Jingming Zeng,Yang Ou,Xiaopeng Qi,Tongxiang Liang

Exploration for an earth-rich and competent electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a significant and challenging approach to confronting the resources shortage and environmental crisis. Porous N-doped Mo 2 C@C (N-Mo 2 C@C) nanoparticles self-encapsulated in nanospheres are presented as a high-performing HER electrocatalyst fabricated through a one-pot solvothermal method followed by hydrogen calcination . Structural analyses show that acetamide can regulate the size of the nanospheres, provide a N source for doping and form porous structures composed of Mo 2 C, which suggests the exposure of extensive active sites as well as the contact and diffusion among the medium, electrodes, and gas. Theoretical calculations show that the N doping can enhance the activity of the Mo-C bond, reduce the energy of capturing hydrogen intermediates, and increase the catalytic conductivity. This work offers a simple and promising strategy to understand the catalytic mechanism required to optimize the activity of Mo-based electrocatalysts via N doping.

Valence regulation of Ru/Mo2C heterojunction for efficient acidic overall water splitting

Zhao Liu,Yuxuan Liu,Huawei He,Hongbo Shao,Yi Zhang,Jing Li,Weiwei Cai

Hydrogen production by water splitting has the characteristics of clean, efficient, and strong operability. However, it is limited by the low activity and insufficient stability of cathode and anode catalysts. Therefore, cost-effective catalysts for efficient cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) have to be developed. In this work, Ru/Mo 2 C heterojunctions are constructed to regulate the valence of Ru and Mo in the catalyst to simultaneously boost HER and OER in acidic conditions. Consequently, the overpotentials providing 10 mA/cm 2 HER and OER in the acidic electrolyte are reduced to 40 mV and 215 mV, respectively. Finally, only 1.51 V applied voltage is required to achieve 10 mA/cm 2 acidic overall water splitting. Taking stability into consideration, the Ru/Mo 2 C catalyst shows good application prospects in practical acid water electrolysis devices.

Mechanism-of-Action Elucidation of Reversible Li–CO2 Batteries Using the Water-in-Salt Electrolyte

Ningning Feng,Bingliang Wang,Zhuo Yu,Yuming Gu,Lili Xu,Jing Ma,Yonggang Wang,Yongyao Xia

Li–CO2 batteries have attracted worldwide attention because of their dual characteristics of high energy density and effective CO2 capture. However, the basic electrochemistry mechanism involved has been unclear, which is mainly confused by the complicated decomposition of organic electrolytes. Herein, water-in-salt (WIS, LiTFSI/H2O 21.0 mol/1 kg) has been explored as a suitable electrolyte for the first time to investigate the reaction mechanism of Li–CO2 batteries with different cathodes (carbon nanotube (CNT) and Mo2C/CNT, respectively). An Mo2C-based Li–CO2 battery with WIS delivers a higher energy efficiency of 83% and a superior cyclability, compared to those of the CNT-based counterpart cell. Through various ex/in situ qualitative/quantitative characterizations, the Mo2C-based Li–CO2 battery with WIS can operate on the reversible conversion of CO2-to-Li2C2O4 ((e–/CO2)ideal = 1) at lower discharge/charge overpotentials, while the CNT-based counterpart cell is based on the formation/decomposition of Li2CO3 ((e–/CO2)ideal ≈ 1.33) at high overpotentials. Such a difference in CO2 reduction products stems from the stronger interaction between Mo2C(101) and Li2C2O4 than that of the CNT and Li2C2O4 based on the density functional theory calculations, resulting in the selective stabilization of the intermediate product Li2C2O4 on the Mo2C surface.

A 3D aerogel evaporator for efficient solar interfacial evaporation: Breaking through the upper limit of steam production rate

Zhaoshun Zhang,Qi Zhang,Hui Zhang,Xueqin Zuo,Qun Yang,Huaibao Tang,Shaowei Jin,Guang Li

Solar desalination is the most effective way to obtain clean and cheap fresh water. However, its lower upper limit of steam production rate limits its development and practical applications. In this paper, a microcrystalline cellulose aerogel composite Mo 2 C evaporator (MCAM) was prepared by combining Mo 2 C with microcrystalline cellulose aerogel (MCA). The evaporator consists of MCAM photothermal layer, polyurethane (PU) sponge insulation layer and one-dimensional water channel. Mo 2 C has high-light absorption efficiency. At the same time, the vertical channel inside the MCA makes the incident light be reflected and absorbed for many times inside. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the vertical channel of MCA and the light absorption ability of Mo 2 C, MCAM obtained a high light absorption efficiency of 96.96 %. The interaction between the MCAM evaporator and water can reduce the evaporation enthalpy, thereby breaking the upper limit of the steam generation rate. Therefore, the evaporator achieved a steam production rate of 1.92 kg⋅m −2 ⋅h −1 and an energy utilization efficiency of 118.2 %. In addition, MCAM shows excellent salt tolerance and self-discharging salt ability, which ensures its stable operation in high-salinity environment. Besides its high efficiency, MCAM has significant purification effect on simulated seawater, heavy metal wastewater, and organic wastewater. This study provides a new strategy for further improving the steam production rate of the solar interface evaporator.

Selective H2O2 Electrosynthesis over Defective Carbon from Electrochemical Etching of Molybdenum Carbide

Chunyu Zhang,Chan Wu,Li Wang,Guozhu Liu

The controllable synthesis of specific defective carbon catalysts is crucial for two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e– ORR) to generate H2O2 due to the great potential applications. Herein, the defective carbon catalysts (Mo-CDC-ns) were prepared by an electrochemical activation (ECA) method with Mo2C/C as a parent. Electrochemical cyclic voltammetry curves, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy confirm the evolution process of a defective carbon structure from the Mo2C phase in which Mo species are first oxidized to Mo6+ species and then the latter are dissolved into the solution and defective carbon is simultaneously formed. Raman and electron paramagnetic resonance spectra reveal that the defect types in Mo-CDC-ns are the edge defect and vacancy defect sites. Compared with the parent Mo2C/C, Mo-CDC-ns exhibit gradually increased kinetic current density and selectivity for H2O2 generation with an extension of activation cycles from 10 (Mo-CDC-10) to 30 (Mo-CDC-30). Over Mo-CDC-30, a kinetic current density of 19.4 mA cm–2 and a selectivity close to 90% in 0.1 M KOH solution were achieved, as well as good stability for H2O2 production in an extended test up to 12 h in an H-cell. Graphene planes and Stone Wales 5757-carbon were constructed as basic models for density functional theory calculations. It revealed that the obtained defective structure after the removal of Mo atoms contains the double vacancy at the edge of graphene (Edge-DVC) and the topological defect on the plane of 5757-carbon (5757C-D), which show more moderate reaction free energy for forming *OOH and smaller energy barrier of 2e– ORR.

Accelerated Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle in Mo2C-based Fe catalyst to promote peroxymonosulfate activation

Yunzhan Ying,Shikun Liang,Fayang Zhang,Xiangwei Xu,Chenbo Qian,Long Jiang,Jing Zhou,Yulong Wan,Lie Wang,Yuyuan Yao

The harmful impact of organic pollutants on aquatic ecosystems underscores the pressing need for effective remediation. While activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) with Fe catalyst offers a promising approach for eliminating these pollutants, its widespread use is hindered by the sluggish regeneration of Fe 2+ from Fe 3+ . Here, this study demonstrates for the first time that combining an Fe catalyst with Mo 2 C (Fe-Mo 2 C) enhances the Fe³⁺/Fe 2 ⁺ cycle, thereby improving PMS activation. The Fe-Mo 2 C/PMS system achieved near-complete degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) within only 8 minutes, with an impressive observed rate constant ( k obs ) of up to 0.624 min -1 , about 15 times greater than that of Fe-C catalyst. It also exhibits the capability to degrade a broad range of common antibiotics, phenols, and dye-like organic compounds. Through electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and quenching experiments, it was verified that hydroxyl radicals (·OH), sulfate radicals (SO 4 ·- ), singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), and superoxide radicals (·O 2 - ) species during the reaction, with the former three serving as the primary active species. These findings offer a hopeful avenue for the systematic development and enhancement of catalysts specifically designed to efficiently remediate organic pollutants in wastewater.

Defect engineering of Ni3N/Mo2C heterostructure for enhanced alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction performance

Muhammad Rafaqat,Lisha Shen,Tauseef Munawar,Tu Zhiming,Chenglin Zhao,Zhida Wang,Hongyi Tan,Changqing Guo,Chang-Feng Yan

Electrocatalytic water splitting is being considered an effective approach to address the increasing energy crises and environmental issues. But it still suffers from a lack of efficient and stable electrocatalysts. Developing electrocatalysts through an integration of defect engineering and heterojunction engineering could be a reliable solution for improved activity, stability, and practicability. In this context, a heterostructure of Ni 3 N/Mo 2 C@CP was synthesized using a facile hydrothermal method and two-step heating treatment, including carbonization and nitridation. Moreover, the defects were intentionally produced by zinc intermediate doping in Ni 3 N/Mo 2 C@CP. The ratio of Zn versus Ni and Mo metal precursor was gradually increased to optimize the defects in Ni 3 N/Mo 2 C@CP heterostructure for excellent HER performance. Eventually, the optimized defect-rich Ni 3 N/Mo 2 [email protected] heterostructure requires only a small overpotential of 65 mV to attain the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , indicating a remarkable HER performance. Apart from the HER activity, defect-rich Ni 3 N/Mo 2 [email protected] heterostructure exhibited long-term stability over 112 h for continuous electrochemical hydrogen production.

Hydroxyl-mediated hydrogen spillover across spatially decoupled Co(OH)2@Mo2C tandem electrocatalyst

Shuangting Ren,Tian Han,Ruijing Zhang,Ruimin Xing,Rohit Jasrotia,Hamid Zouggari,Abdallah Albourine,Shanhu Liu

Alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is constrained by the Sabatier principle, making it challenging to simultaneously optimize water dissociation and hydrogen desorption. Here, we report a spatially decoupled tandem catalyst, Co(OH) 2 @Mo 2 C, that circumvents this constraint via a hydroxyl-mediated hydrogen spillover pathway. Mo 2 C serves as the *H generation site via rapid water dissociation, while adjacent Co(OH) 2 functions as the *H acceptor and recombination center, with abundant surface hydroxyl groups on Co(OH) 2 accelerating hydrogen spillover from Mo 2 C to Co(OH) 2 and sustaining water dissociation kinetics. CH 3 I poisoning experiments, corroborated by in situ Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, reveal the critical mediating role of hydroxyl groups in hydrogen migration. The optimized catalyst achieves only 43 mV overpotential to reach 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, and durability over 150 h at 0.5 A cm −2 in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer. This work establishes a generalizable interfacial engineering strategy to circumvent the Sabatier limitation by accelerating hydrogen migration on spatially segregating elementary steps. A spatially decoupled Co(OH) 2 @Mo 2 C tandem electrocatalyst shows that Mo 2 C rapidly dissociates water while Co(OH) 2 efficiently shuttles *H to accelerate H 2 release, where Co(OH) 2 abundant surface hydroxyl groups accelerate hydrogen spillover from Mo 2 C to Co(OH) 2 and maintain water dissociation kinetics. Effective catalytic effects of Mo2C MXene on the hydrogen storage in magnesium hydride

Xiaojiao Wang,Zhenluo Yuan,Yang Shi,Shangsheng Li,Guofa Mi,Qiuming Peng,Shumin Han,Yanping Fan,Baozhong Liu

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) has received widespread attention because of its high hydrogen capacity and low cost, but the sluggish kinetics limited its practical application. Herein, the two-dimensional Mo 2 C MXene was constructed to motivate the efficient hydrogen storage in MgH 2 for the first time. After doping 10 wt% Mo 2 C MXene, the starting dehydriding temperature was lowered to 225 °C, presenting a 117 °C reduction compared with that of as-received MgH 2 . The 10 wt% Mo 2 C-containing MgH 2 sample could rapidly release 6.7 wt% H 2 in 13 min at 300 °C, and the product after hydrogen release could absorb 6.0 wt% H 2 in 12 min at 200 °C, showing superior hydriding and dehydriding kinetics. Moreover, the activation energy ( E a ) of MgH 2 –10 wt% Mo 2 C (107.58 ± 1.57 kJ/mol) was obviously lower than that of pure MgH 2 (130.45 ± 1.97 kJ/mol), and the reduced activation energy explained the reduced dehydrogenation temperature and enhanced kinetics. Microstructure characterization revealed that Mo-species (Mo 0 and Mo 2+ ) formed during ball milling served as active species accelerated the hydriding/dehydriding reactions, and the uniformly distributed active species and the interaction between Mo and O jointly promoted the hydrogen storage properties of MgH 2 .

Mo2C-bridged MoOx/N-doped carbon heterojunctions for efficient photodegradation of sulfur hexafluoride

Wenhui Zhou,Boxu Dong,Shan Zhu,Fengxiang Ma,Ziqi Si,Likui Feng,Liang Zhang,Yue Zhao,Jiantao Zai,Xuefeng Qian

A Mo 2 C-bridged MoO x /N-doped carbon heterostructure (MoO x -Mo 2 C-N@C) synthesized via one-step calcination demonstrates exceptional photocatalytic activity for sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ) degradation, achieving a remarkable capacity of 2.12 mmol/g under UV irradiation, tenfold higher than commercial MoO 2 . The enhanced performance originates from synergistic interfacial electronic modulation: Mo 2 C channels create electron-deficient Mo sites that facilitate SF 6 adsorption and S–F bond cleavage, while N-doped carbon matrices promote charge separation and protect active centers against fluorine poisoning. This work presents an effective metal–carbon hybrid strategy for activating super-stable molecules through rational interface engineering.

Ni/WC-Mo2C ternary-interface electrocatalyst for bidirectional optimization of HER and OER

Bao Liu,Yi Li,Pengcheng Ding,Dan Li,Jiwei Li,Xuanwei Zhao,Jia Zu,Maoyu Wang,Ye Sun,Miao Yu

Developing efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting remains challenging due to the antagonistic demands of oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER/HER). Herein, we present a ternary heterointerface non-precious catalyst, Ni/WC-Mo 2 C, for bidirectional HER and OER optimization. Combining in situ characterization and theoretical calculations, we demonstrate how this design overcomes conventional Schottky junction limitations: (i) The band gradient of the WC-Mo 2 C semiconductor heterojunction synergizes with metallic Ni's electron-donating properties to construct an "electron staircase" channel to enhance charge transfer while increasing active electron density and lowering the d -band center; and (ii) ternary interface-induced lattice strain buffering and localized electron redistribution stabilize high-valent Ni species and optimize intermediate adsorption/desorption energetics. This synergy resolves the OER-HER electronic conflict, endowing the catalyst with ultralow overpotentials of merely 26 mV for HER and 153 mV for OER at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. The assembled electrolyzer delivers a high current density of 1000 mA cm −2 at a low cell voltage of 1.73 V and sustains stable overall water splitting operation for an extended duration of 1200 h, outperforming noble-metal benchmarks (Pt/C||RuO 2 ). This work establishes a new paradigm for non-precious bifunctional electrocatalyst design through multicomponent heterointerface engineering.

High-Rate Nonaqueous Mg–CO2 Batteries Enabled by Mo2C-Nanodot-Embedded Carbon Nanofibers

Wenbo Liu,Ning Wang,Yongjun Wu,Qianyi Zhang,Xiaoyan Chen,Yanmei Li,Rui Xu

The widespread acceptance of nonaqueous rechargeable metal–gas batteries, known for their remarkably high theoretical energy density, faces obstacles such as poor reversibility and low energy efficiency under high charge–discharge current densities. To tackle these challenges, a novel catalytic cathode architecture for Mg–CO 2 batteries, fabricated using a one-pot electrospinning method followed by heat treatment, is presented. The resulting structure features well-dispersed molybdenum carbide nanodots embedded within interconnected carbon nanofibers, forming a 3D macroporous conducting network. This cathode design enhances the volumetric efficiency, enabling effective discharge product deposition, while also improving electrical properties and boosting catalytic activity. This enhancement results in high discharge capacities and excellent rate capabilities, while simultaneously minimizing voltage hysteresis and maximizing energy efficiency. The battery exhibits a stable cycle life of over 250 h at a current density of 200 mA g −1 with a low initial charge–discharge voltage gap of 0.72 V. Even at incredibly high current densities, reaching 1600 mA g −1 , the battery maintains exceptional performance. These findings highlight the crucial role of cathode architecture design in enhancing the performance of Mg–CO 2 batteries and hold promise for improving other metal–gas batteries that involve deposition–decomposition reactions.
