Virulence-Selective Trap–Capture–Kill Antibacterial Nanostructures With Immune–Metabolic Regulation for Treating Implant-Associated Infections

Xiaodong Hu,Jiaqi Zhong,Yujiong Chen,Botao Liu,Tianyu Du,Weilai Zhu,Minzhe Zheng,Hongze Liang,Jiahua Ni,Zhaoxiang Peng

The treatment of orthopedic implant–associated infections (IAIs) presents significant challenges due to increasing drug resistance. This study reports a virulence-selective trap–capture–kill antibacterial system for effectively treating persistent infections while promoting local bone tissue regeneration by regulating disordered immune and metabolic microenvironments caused by IAIs. Here, this work fabricates a nanostructured antibacterial system (F-14-TNA) based on a TiO 2 nanotube array modified with a cationic pentacyclic coplanar backbone, fascaplysin derivative 14 (F-14). The modified surface induces a unique virulence-initiated chemotaxis behavior, with the TiO 2 nanostructure selectively trapping hyperpathogenic bacterial strains from the infecting microbiota. These trapped bacterial strains are subsequently captured by the positively charged F-14 surface via electrostatic force. The virulence-selective bacteria are then killed via a reactive oxygen species–mediated pathway regulated by the phosphotransferase system cyclic adenosine monophosphate receptor protein cascade. In vitro and in vivo studies reveal that F-14-TNA has multiple biocompatibility functions, such as effective antibacterial activity, regulation of the immune microenvironment of bone infections, and recovery of disordered bone metabolism. The nanostructure developed in this study provides a novel approach for the treatment of IAIs.

Temperature-dependent trap engineering in gallate long afterglow phosphor for advanced information encryption and anti-counterfeiting

Zhixue Li,Yang Ding,Shuzeng Zhang,Qinan Mao,Meijiao Liu,Chunhua Wang,Ning Han,Jiasong Zhong

Long-persistent luminescence (LPL) materials have attracted significant attention in the fields of information encryption and anti-counterfeiting due to their unique afterglow emission under darkness. However, accurately modulating afterglow behavior as well as trap states of LPL materials is highly tricky. Herein, the temperature-dependent trap engineering in Cu 2+ -doped SrGa 2 O 4 (SGOC) phosphors for tunable afterglow emission is demonstrated. By changing the sintering temperature, the luminescence and afterglow performances of SGOC can be well tuned. A series of characterizations confirmed that increasing calcination temperature results in the formation of a higher concentration of oxygen vacancy defects in SGOC, which can bring out more traps in its band gap and move the trap position to a deeper region, so as to achieve longer and stronger afterglow performance. The theoretical calculations support the role of Cu 2+ in narrowing the bandgap and enhancing electron localization in SGOC for red luminescence and afterglow emission. By virtue of their distinct afterglow and luminescence performance, the SGOC phosphors obtained at different calcination temperatures for advanced anti-counterfeiting and time-resolved information encryption were demonstrated. The temperature-dependent trap engineering proposed in this work can inspire some new concepts in exploring LPL materials with multi-mode emission for advancing information anti-counterfeiting and encryption applications.

Eu2+ co-doped MgAl2O4: Mn2+ green phosphor ceramics: Anti-thermal quenching emission via trap engineering strategy

Junwei Zhang,Hui Lin,Shuo Zhu,Yuetong Zhen,Ruijin Hong,Zhaoxia Han,Dawei Zhang

The rapid advancement of high-power solid-state lighting highlights the importance of developing phosphor ceramics with high resistance to thermal quenching of its luminescence. Herein, a series of Eu 2+ co-doping MgAl 2 O 4 : Mn 2+ phosphor ceramics were synthesized by spark plasma sintering. The significant green light enhancement at 516   nm is attributed to Eu 2+ -Mn 2+ energy transfer. The introduction of Eu 2+ increases the concentration of electron trap levels and improve the luminescence intensity at 423   K from 80% to 110%, compared with the counterparts at room temperature. The strong correlation between trap levels and oxygen vacancies was demonstrated by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis. Finally, the application demonstration of the optimized sample was explored through its integration with a 400   nm LED chip. This study proposes a strategy of leveraging trap levels to induce anti-thermal quenching behavior, providing some insights for the development of highly thermally stable phosphor ceramics.

Multidimensional Dynamic Information Display Based on Long Persistent Phosphors via Wavelength Multiplexing Coupled with Trap Management

Wenna Gao,Liangshen Wang,Yuqiang Wang,Wenqian Xu,Xiangyu Zhang,Dangli Gao

Precise manipulation of luminescence modality and chromatic output in persistent luminescence (PersL) materials is critical for information storage and advanced anti-counterfeiting. Here, a multimodal GdNbO 4 :Bi 3+ ,Tb 3+ phosphor with the quintuplet luminescence (including photoluminescence, PersL, photo-stimulated luminescence (PSL), photo-stimulated PersL, and thermo-stimulated luminescence (TSL)) and spatiotemporally tunable colorimetry is reported. The PersL mechanism follows the localized model is proposed based on monitored wavelength and temperature-dependent thermoluminescence curves. While the dynamic PersL output color can be attributed to energy transfer and different luminescent decay rates. For the first time, the mechanisms of PSL and TSL are clarified, which are attributed to the release of trapped carriers corresponding to optical and acoustic transitions, respectively. These multimodal phosphors are used for information storage and sophisticated anti-counterfeiting. This study here offers profound insights into the mechanism of multimodal luminescence, providing theoretical guidance and practical examples for the design, synthesis, and application of PersL materials.

Trap-State Suppression via Dual Defect Healing Enables Stable Near-Infrared Lanthanide-Based Quantum Dot LEDs

Jia-Lin Pan,Wan-Shan Shen,Hua-Hui Li,Lei Huang,Zong-Shuo Liu,Zhao-Kui Wang,Bao-Quan Sun,Ya-Kun Wang,Liang-Sheng Liao

Lanthanide-alloyed perovskite quantum dots (QDs, Yb 3+ : CsPb(Cl 1-x Br x ) 3 ) are promising in near-infrared light-emitting diodes (NIR-LEDs) for theoretically ≈200% photoluminance quantum yield because of quantum-cutting effect, where one high-energy photon is used as a source to generate two low-energy photons. However, the inferior stability of Yb 3+ : CsPb(Cl 1-x Br x ) 3 remains a big challenge. It is posited that vacancy-defect complexes during lanthanide ions alloying are the driving force behind the collapse of octahedral geometry. Here, a coordination agent compensation plus an in situ doping strategy is developed to address the incompatibility between high NIR emission and good stability. This is achieved by combining the sodium ion to fill the vacancy and a coordinating agent (pyridine-2-carboxylic acid) for passivation. This enabled the treated QD films to have a magnitude of order decreased deep trap density compared to the control. Besides, the treated composite exhibits a sixfold increase in NIR intensity and tenfold lower trap states. Using the optimized Yb 3 ⁺: CsPb(Cl 1-x Br x ) 3 , NIR-LEDs are fabricated and achieved an external quantum efficiency of 8.2%, one of the highest values among NIR LEDs with emission >950 nm. Furthermore, these LEDs exhibit a 30-fold increase in operational stability compared to the control.

A multifunctional trap-capture-kill antibacterial system for enhanced wound healing via modified decellularized mushroom aerogels

Chuwei Zhang,Shuai Fan,Jing Zhang,Ganghua Yang,Chao Cai,Shixuan Chen,Yongjin Fang,Wenbing Wan

Wound infections are prevalent and can result in prolonged healing times. In this study, we referred to the “trap-capture-kill” antibacterial strategy to create a wound dressing (DS/PDA@GO-L) by coupling graphene oxide (GO) with lysine and coating it onto the decellularized mushroom stem (DS) using polydopamine (PDA). The mechanism of action of the bacteria-killing process involves lysine chemotaxis and the siphoning effect of DS aerogel, with the process of killing the bacteria being initiated via near-infrared photothermal treatment. In vitro studies demonstrated that DS/PDA@GO-L exhibited excellent blood and cell compatibility, while in vivo experiments revealed its remarkable efficacy in combating bacterial infections. Specifically, the combination of DS/PDA@GO-L with photothermal therapy led to the elimination of over 95 % of S. aureus , E. coli , and Pseudomonas aeruginosa . Furthermore, the aerogel, when used in conjunction with photothermal therapy, significantly reduced bacterial infection at the wound site and accelerated wound healing. During the wound's proliferative phase, it notably enhanced vascularization and extracellular matrix deposition. Furthermore, immunohistochemical staining revealed that bacterial clearance led to a reduction in pro-inflammatory responses and a decrease in the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, thereby restoring the wound's inflammatory environment to a pro-regenerative state. Taken together, the developed DS/PDA@GO-L holds great potential in the field of infected skin wound healing.

Controllable persistent luminescence in bismuth activated memory phosphors by trap management for artificial intelligence anti-counterfeiting

Dangli Gao,Chengxue Du,Yuqiang Wang,Wenqian Xu,Wenna Gao,Qing Pang,Yuhua Wang

The management of multicolour and multimode luminescence in persistent luminescence (PersL) materials plays a crucial role in encrypting information to combat forgery. Although luminescent anti-counterfeiting has made significant progresses, anti-counterfeiting signals only exhibit typical luminescent emission colours of materials under fixed external stimuli, which makes them susceptible to be replicated. Here, we developed a series of LiReGeO4:Bi,Ln (Re = Lu, Y and Gd, Ln = Eu, Tb, Pr, Yb, Sm, Tm, Ce, Dy and Er) phosphors with multicolour and on-demand controlled PersL emission through purposeful design of the electron–hole pair trap structure. Besides the multicolour and multimode emission, these phosphors demonstrated a temporal memory function for writing information, which provides a new dimension for higher-order anti-counterfeiting. As an example, LiLuGeO4:Bi,Ln (Ln = Eu, Tb, Pr and Yb) memory phosphors display the pattern signals in the order requested by the owner, which makes any sophisticated forgery technique powerless. The study here provides not only a simplistic method for constructing a new-type persistent memory material, but also a new paradigm of artificial intelligence memory for anti-counterfeiting technology.

Enhanced High-Temperature performance of PEI dielectrics via deep trap energy levels and physically crosslinked effects

Deng Hu,Hang Luo,Yuan Liu,Fan Wang,Bo Peng,Xiaona Li,Huan Wang,Guanghu He,Dou Zhang

Dielectric capacitors are indispensable energy storage components in both civilian applications and industrial processes. Under elevated temperatures and intense electric fields, polymer dielectrics usually suffer from an inevitably increase in conductivity, leading to a significant reduction in breakdown strength, energy density and efficiency. This investigation aims to design an all-organic dielectric with enhanced high-temperature capacitive performance by introducing a small molecule P-xylene F (PF) into polyetherimide (PEI). Two mechanisms including the incorporation of deep trap energy levels via wide bandgap fillers and the electrostatic interactions by hydrogen bonding between the fillers and the polymer matrix are proposed to support the enhancement. The hydrogen bonding between PF and polyamic acid (PAA)chains induces the formation of physical cross-linking between PF and the negatively charged benzene rings in PEI after imidization. This influences benzene ring stacking within the polymer chains and enhances the film’s mechanical strength. Additionally, PF’s wider bandgap compared to PEI introduces deep trap energy levels, hindering carrier transport and reducing conductive losses at high temperatures. As results, the dielectric achieves an energy density (U d ) of 4.47 J/cm 3 with an efficiency (η) above 90 % at 200 °C. Its excellent stability is also demonstrated with over 210,000 charge–discharge cycles at 200 °C. This study promotes the development of high-performance dielectrics at high temperature.

Astragaloside IV- loaded biomimetic nanoparticles target IκBα to regulate neutrophil extracellular trap formation for sepsis therapy

Wu Shujuan,Zhou Mengqi,Zhou Huimin,Han Lu,Liu Huifan

This study explored the novel mechanism of Astragaloside IV (As) in treating sepsis and its application through a biomimetic nano-delivery system (As@ZM). Sepsis, a condition of organ dysfunction caused by an abnormal host response to infection, poses a significant threat to global health due to its high mortality rate. Our findings revealed a new mechanism for As in treating sepsis, which involved the reduction of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) release, potentially related to As binding with IκBα to inhibit the activation of the NF-κB pathway. As treated neutrophils also improved the immune microenvironment by crosstalk with endothelial cells and lung epithelial cells. However, the stability and bioavailability of As limited its clinical application. To address this issue, we had developed a ZIF-8-based nano-delivery system that achieved targeted delivery through neutrophil membrane coating, significantly enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of As. The innovative design of As@ZM offered a new strategy for sepsis treatment, with the potential to improve clinical outcomes. Graphical abstract

Ultrafine MOF as charge trap enables superior high-temperature energy storage performance in polyetherimide composites dielectrics

Na Zhang,Hang Zhao,Chuying Zhang,Haotong Guo,Zhi-Min Dang,Jinbo Bai

Polymer dielectrics are crucial for electrostatic energy storage and offer broad application prospects in advanced high-power electrical systems, but their energy storage performance declines considerably due to increased conductivity at elevated temperatures. This work presents a structurally-simple high-temperature composite dielectric by incorporating positively charged ultrafine UIO-66 nanoparticles into polyetherimide (PEI) matrix. Be distinguished from traditional sub-micron MOF structures that usually reported in very recently, the newly-found nanoscale effect endows the ultrafine UIO-66 (∼12.9 nm) with largely-increased active sites, surface charge density and electron affinity. These ultrafine UIO-66 nanoparticles can capture free charge through strong electrostatic interactions and introduce deeper traps in composite dielectrics, reducing conduction loss and improving energy storage property significantly at elevated temperatures. Specifically, filling only as tiny as 0.5 wt% ultrafine UIO-66 endows the PEI-based composite with ultra-high energy densities of 5.9J cm −3 and 3.7 J cm −3 accompanied by high charge–discharge efficiencies of 91.4 % and 84.1 % at 150 ℃ and 200 ℃, respectively. These obtained performance in this work surpasses those of most previously reported mono-layered composite counterparts. This study provides a straightforward and effective strategy for designing high-temperature polymer dielectrics in advanced electrical and electronic systems, offering a new route for future applications and developments.

Selective transmembrane transport of iodide based on electrochemically induced iodide-trap BiOI/MWCNTs/PVA composite membrane

Jingjing Zhao,Zhong Liu,Zhiyong Ji,Xiaowei An,Xiao Du,Fengfeng Gao,Xiaogang Hao,Jun Li

An electrochemically induced bismuth iodine oxide/multiwalled carbon nanotubes/polyvinyl alcohol (BiOI/MWCNTs/PVA) composite membrane electrode with iodide ion trap (I − -trap) was fabricated by prerelease of I − under reduction potential. The I − -trap BiOI/MWCNTs/PVA composite membrane with unique lattice confinement structures was used for the selective extraction of I − in an electrochemically switched ion permselective (ESIP) process. In the ESIP system, the direct uptake and release of I − were realized by applying a cell voltage-pulse potential (CV-PP) coupling circuit on the membranes to switch the oxidation/reduction state. The I − -trap BiOI/MWCNTs/PVA composite membrane exhibited a maximum flux of 8.32 mg·m −2 ·min −1 and superior electrochemical stability. The separation factors of I − /Br − , I − /Cl − , I − /NO 3 − , and I − /SO 4 2− in the mixed solutions were 2.67, 3.71, 3.82, and 6.70 respectively. Therefore, such a novel I − -trap BiOI/MWCNTs/PVA composite membrane could be used in the ESIP system for the selective extraction of I − ions from low concentration solutions.

Polymer dielectrics enabled by molecular engineering design and charge trap regulation for high-temperature energy storage

Guangyu Duan,Fengying Hu,Yiran He,Zuming Hu,Ming Tian,Junwei Zha

Aromatic polyimides (PIs) are widely regarded as promising hightemperature polymer dielectric films because of their excellent thermal stability. However, the extensive intra-and inter-chain migration of delocalized π-electrons through aromatic rings, coupled with a sharp increase in the density of injected and thermally activated charge carriers, significantly weakens the high-temperature energy storage performance of conventional PI. In this work, a novel strategy combining molecular engineering design with modulation of charge energy levels was employed to fabricate a series of fluorinated polyimide/magnesium oxide (FPI/MgO) dielectric films incorporating -CF 3 groups and wide-bandgap MgO nanoparticles. Compared with conventional PI, the introduction of -CF 3 and MgO effectively suppresses π-electron migration and thermally excited charge carriers, and hinders the propagation and development of breakdown pathways along the electric field direction. These synergistic effects effectively inhibit bulk-limited hopping conduction, leading to significantly improved breakdown strength (E b ) and enhanced high-temperature capacitive performance of the FPI/MgO dielectric film. At 150 °C, the FPI dielectric film with 0.10 wt.% MgO exhibits a high E b of 501 MV/m, representing an enhancement of 54.2% over that of conventional PI (325 MV/m). Benefiting from the superior E b and suppressed leakage current density, the FPI dielectric film with 0.10 wt.% MgO achieves a maximal discharge energy density (U d ) of 4.97 J/cm 3 at 150 °C, which is 4.3 times that of conventional PI (1.15 J/cm 3 ) and exceeds most previously reported high-temperature polymer dielectric films. This work presents a new paradigm for developing PI-based dielectrics with superior high-temperature energy storage performance.
