With the rapid development of industry, the problem of water pollution has become increasingly serious. Though there are many separation materials available to solve this problem, how to separate multiple wastewater at the same time remains a challenge. Hydrogel coating is suitable for use in the field of oil–water separation, and chitosan (CS) is effective in removing anionic dyes. Therefore, the preparation of separation membranes with hydrogel coating containing CS and dopamine (DA) can effectively separate oil–water emulsion and anionic dye wastewater. In this paper, DA@CNTs/CS hydrogel coating was prepared by sequentially coating Cu 2+ , DA@CNTs, Cu 2+ and CS on the surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane by deposition of self-assembly, which enhanced the hydrophilicity of the membrane and made it highly underwater oleophobic and antifouling. The alkali treated PVDF membrane contained a large amount of –OH, Cu 2+ , which formed coordination bonds with –OH, CS, and DA and the hydrogel coating could be stably loaded on the membrane. In addition, the introduction of rigid CNTs effectively improved the performance of the modified membrane under extreme conditions such as high pH and high salt concentration. PVDF-DA@CNTs/CS membrane had an ideal pure water flux (PWF) of 1470 (L·m −2 ·h −1 ) and the separation efficiency of 99.7 % for anionic dye and 99.4 % for oil–water emulsion. The contaminant on the membrane surface can be quickly removed by washing with DI water. The overall performance of the membrane is also maintained at a very high level of long-term filtration of wastewater. In summary, this study provides a new approach to complex wastewater treatment technology.

Herein, we present a novel polyvinylidene fluoride/vanadium-titanium dioxide (PVDF-TiO 2 /V) membranes prepared using LBL self-assembly. The membranes were tested for ultrafiltration of bovine serum albumin solution and photodegradation of SMX solution. The neat PVDF membrane was endowed with photocatalytic function due to the synergistic interaction of TiO 2 and V. The structure and morphology of PVDF-TiO 2 /V membranes were characterized using a variety of techniques, showing that TiO 2 /V particles had been successfully integrated on the membrane surface. By increasing the number of TiO 2 /V layers, contact angle tests demonstrated that the membranes hydrophilicity has been significantly improved. The FTIR result demonstrated that the TiO 2 /V was affixed to the surface of the PVDF membrane by interfacial interactions. The thermal property of the PVDF membrane was also improved with the assembly of TiO 2 /V on the membrane surface. The PVDF-TiO 2 /V membranes maintained a high BSA rejection of 99.4 % and FRR of 97.4 % while showing a water flux up to 390.07 kg m -2 h −1 , which is ∼1.5 times higher than that of neat PVDF membrane. Specifically, the membranes were capable of degrading SMX under visible-light. The photocatalytic activity for SMX increased with the number of TiO 2 /V layers, attaining the highest value with four self-assembled TiO 2 /V layers. The reaction rate of the optimum membrane was 11.57-fold compared to the neat membrane under visible-light. Furthermore, 95.9 % degradation efficiency was achieved, even after six cycles. More importantly, BPA, MO, and MB could be photodegraded using the PVDF-TiO 2 /V membranes. Compared to using bulk or powdered photocatalysts, the PVDF-TiO 2 /V membrane is more practical and promising for wastewater remediation due to its many advantages including better long-term stability, ability to endure pollutant degradation, low cost, and environmentally friendly.

Highly efficient separation of emulsified oily wastewater, especially for surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions is urgently demanded and still worldwide challenge. Herein, a superoleophilic and under oil superhydrophobic Poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/graphene (GE) composite nanofibrous membrane (GPNM) was fabricated through a simple one-step electrospinning strategy for highly efficient gravity-driven surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions separation. The resultant membrane possessed water contact angel of 140.1°±1.1°, oil contact angel of nearly 0°, as well as under oil ultralow water adhesion ability. Furthermore, the morphology, pore size and surface wettability of as-prepared nanofibrous membranes were simply tuned by adjusting the concentration of GE in electrospinning solution. Thanks to the narrow pore size distribution , high porosity (>92.8%), and the intrinsic strong oil affinity of GE nanosheet , the composite membrane showed outstanding Span 80 surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions separation efficiency as high as 99.8% with corresponding permeation flux up to 23794 ± 928 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 during gravity-driven separation process. The exceptional oil absorption performance was also displayed by collecting floated oils on water surface. The results would make our composite nanofibrous membranes a great promise of dealing with practical oily wastewater remediation.

Conductive composites based on polymers and conductive nanofillers are widely studied as a promising material. The rational design of 3D conductive networks in composites is crucial to improve their electrical conductivity and reduce the dosage of nanofillers. Herein, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and polystyrene (PS) bi-continuous structures with modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) tailored to anchor at the interface are designed to achieve an ultralow electrical percolation threshold because of the formation of a thin interfacial conductive layer. In this work, the modification of CNTs with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), which contributes to the improvement of the compatibility between PVDF and CNTs, is effective to control the distribution of CNTs in composites. It promotes the migration of CNTs from the PS phase to the interface of PVDF and PS. Consequently, the interfacial conductive layer is formed at a low CNT content, and the electrical percolation threshold of PVDF/PS/CNTs-PMMA nanocomposites is only 0.07 vol%, having a great decrease of about 50% compared with that of PVDF/PS/CNTs nanocomposites. Thus, it is demonstrated that the distribution of CNTs can be tailored to anchor at the interface by proper chemical modification to form an interfacial conductive layer and a decrease of percolation threshold can also be achieved.

In this study, a novel hierarchical pore MIL-101(Cr) foam (HPF-MIL-101) was designed and prepared using the sacrificial template method with NaCl as the sacrificial template. This method involved grinding, heating, and washing the NaCl template to produce HPF-MIL-101, with PVDF as the binder and MIL-101(Cr) as the adsorbent. This preparation process is both straightforward and cost-effective, avoiding the use or generation of any organic reagents, thereby offering an environmentally sustainable approach for producing metal-organic framework (MOF) composites. The prepared HPF-MIL-101 exhibited excellent adsorption capabilities for both anionic dye (methyl orange, MO) and cationic dye (methylene blue, MB). The adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Friedrich isotherm model, indicating a multilayer adsorption. This is further supported by the Weber-Morris intraparticle diffusion model, which divided the adsorption process into three stages. Furthermore, the adsorption process was consistent with the Freundlich isotherm model, with a correlation coefficient ( r ) greater than 0.96. HPF-MIL-101 can also be used as an adsorbent for solid phase extraction (SPE). Therefore, an SPE method combined with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was developed using HPF-MIL-101 as the adsorbent to analyze five fluoroquinolones (FQs) in water samples. This analytical method showed good linearity in the range of 30–2000 ng·mL −1 , with excellent linear correlation coefficient ( r = 0.9991–0.9999), reasonable extraction recoveries ranging from 80.39 to 112.7 % (RSD ≤ 7.9 %), and low limits of detection (8–30 ng·mL −1 ). Overall, the results indicated that HPF-MIL-101 not only had a simple, environment-friendly, and pollution-free preparation process but also can be reused for enrichment and detection of trace FQs in water. Thus, HPF-MIL-101 exhibits immense application potential in environmental pollutant removal and also provides a valuable reference for the preparation and application of other MOF composites.

Developing efficient methods for separating and purifying citrus flavonoids is challenging. This work explored a temperature-responsive composite membrane using poly(ionic liquid) (PIL), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), enabling selective separation of flavonoid glycosides (naringin and neohesperidin) and aglycones (naringenin and hesperetin). A PIL containing temperature-responsive monomer of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), was doped into the PVDF matrix, and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) was anchored on the PIL/PVDF membrane surface via in-situ synthesis, forming a stable structure. Their porosity, hydrophobicity, thermal stability, and mechanical strength were confirmed. When the temperature increased from 30 to 35 °C, the membrane pore size significantly expanded due to the contraction effect of NIPAM, resulting in an increase in the water flux of the four composite membranes by more than 27.8 %. Furthermore, five experimental variables, including the molar ratio of PIL monomer, temperature, feed concentration, feed pH, and NaCl concentration were selected to systematically evaluate the separation performance of the composite membrane for four citrus flavonoids. The results demonstrated that the composite membrane containing both ZIF-8 and PIL exhibited significantly higher separation efficiency compared to pure PVDF and PIL/PVDF membranes. Among them, the M4 membrane performed the best, achieving a total rejection rate of 307.35 % and a separation selectivity of 47.77 % for the four flavonoids at 25 °C. The composite membrane could be regenerated using an alkaline solution (pH = 11), with a total recovery rate of 312.13 % for the four flavonoids, including a recovery rate of 95.39 % for naringenin. Although the membrane structure remained intact after five reuse cycles, the rejection rate showed a decline. This composite membrane is a promising candidate material that can efficiently and selectively separate flavonoid glycosides and aglycones and offers a reference for the separation of other plant active components.

Slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) is a rising star in corrosion protection owing to its outstanding corrosive medium resistance and self-healing property. The large-area and facile fabrication of SLIPS remains a challenge lying on the way of its practical application. Herein, we develop a novel SLIPS based on a porous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate fabricated by thermally induced phase separation. A sphere-packing structure can be easily obtained by blade-coating followed by cooling. The SLIPS exhibits an extremely low sliding angle of 5.8° so that it can resist the fouling of even the Chinese ink, ascribing to its slippery dynamic surface with low surface energy. We also evaluated the anti-corrosion performance of the SLIPS and superhydrophobic PVDF coating by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning Kelvin probe technique (SKP), both of which exhibited enhanced corrosion resistance in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution due to the physical oil and air barriers against the corrosive medium penetration. Nevertheless, the SLIPS coatings performed outstanding self-healing properties because of the high fluidity of infused oil to recover the surface damages, and the self-healing process was recorded by the SKP. Graphical The current research presents a novel slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) based on porous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) structure fabricated by thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). This SLIPS performs outstanding self-cleaning and has anti-corrosion properties owing to its fluid surface. Most importantly, it can be selfrepaired if damaged, benefiting from the fluidity of the infused liquid.

Piezoelectric materials with inherent mechanical–electric coupling effect are a crucial family of functional materials in high-end information technology. For practical applications, the transverse piezoelectric performance (d31 or d32) is mainly considered, because this parameter is a vitally important index to characterize the performance of piezoelectric thin films. However, the transverse piezoelectricity of the thin films as a key figure of merit is seldom mentioned in molecular ferroelectrics. Herein, we report that a new 1D halide perovskite ferroelectric N,N-dimethylallylammoniumCdCl3 (DMAACdCl3) exhibits an above room-temperature ferroelectric phase transition with a saturated polarization of 1.9 μC cm–2 and a coercive field of 5.0 kV cm–1. The thin film of DMAACdCl3 is successfully fabricated using an easy processing spinning method and maintains well ferroelectric properties verified by piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). More significantly, the ferroelectric thin film offers superior transverse piezoelectricity with an in-plane piezoelectric response of about 41 pC N–1, which is about twice that of well-known piezoelectric polymer PVDF (21 pC N–1). Transverse piezoelectricity has been scarcely studied in molecular ferroelectrics, and its exploitation would play an important role in the design of next-generation smart piezoelectric devices.

In the separation of oil/water emulsions using membrane separation methods, fouling remains a problem. To improve the fouling resistance effectively, a hydrophilic tannic acid (TA) coating was constructed on the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane via dip-coating method. Both the wettability and surface free energy were dramatically enhanced after the introduction of the TA coating. TA deposition with extended dip-coating time did not result in a corresponding increase in the pure water permeate quality, suggesting that there is a trade-off between the enhanced surface hydrophilicity and diminished pore size. Furthermore, the threshold fluxes were determined using the flux-stepping method, and explored to provide guidance on membrane fouling rates for oil/water emulsion filtration. The hydrophilic TA dip-coated PVDF membrane prepared at a dip-coating time of 9 h exhibited the highest threshold flux compared to the other membranes. The experimental evidences of the threshold fluxes can be used to predict the sustainable flux regimes for the TA dip-coated membranes. Constant flux verifiable experiments for oil/water emulsion were performed at fluxes near and below the threshold fluxes. By selecting a constant flux strategy below the threshold flux, membrane over-fouling can be avoided efficiently and the operating period can be prolonged favourably. More generally, operation below the threshold flux recognizes a modest fouling level, arising from the sufficient flux, which would result in the infrequent need for cleaning and is a compromise between capital expenditure and operating costs.

In this work CS-SDAEM polymer brushes with long-chain structure were synthesized, and TiO 2 /CS-SDAEM nanoparticles were prepared by modifying them on the TiO 2 surface. The prepared modified membrane can effectively degrade dyes through photocatalysis and can reduce the contamination rate of the membrane during use. The separation membrane achieves efficient removal of contamination by self-cleaning. The results of the membrane surface analysis test show that the formation of coordination bonds between o-benzenetriol of GA and TiO 2 , and the chemical reaction between CS and GA, which promote the stability between coating components. The results of filtering tests show that with the excellent anti-fouling performance of long-chain polymer brush, the photodegradability of TiO 2 and a large number of hydrophilic groups contained in GA and CS, PVDF- TiO 2 /CS-SDAEM membranes overcome the above shortcomings and achieve super-hydrophilicity, anti-fouling and self-cleaning. In addition, DFT model simulations of photocatalytic processes show that there is a charge transfer between CS and TiO 2 , which increases the width of the high light absorption band and improves the efficiency of photodegradation. Modified membranes achieve efficient self-cleaning processes and low flux decline rates, which hold great promise for use in real wastewater application scenarios.

This study presents an innovative approach to membrane fabrication by integrating electrospinning with surface modification techniques to develop a novel dual-layer protective membrane system. The key innovation lies in the incorporation of photothermally responsive nanocomposites, enabling multifunctional membrane performance. The primary layer is a PVDF-PNIPAAm thermoresponsive matrix synthesized by radical polymerization, integrated with BN@PDA-Ag nanosheets. This design combines Ag nanoparticles’ photothermal conversion and BN’s thermal conductivity to regulate pore size via PNIPAAm chain conformational changes induced by temperature. The secondary layer, comprising CS@CNT and PVDF, significantly enhances membrane hydrophilicity and antifouling properties through chitosan’s hydrophilic groups and chelating capabilities. The membrane demonstrates self-cleaning, adaptive filtration, antifouling and high flux, representing a significant advancement in smart membrane technology for water treatment applications.

Sc and B doping enlarges the electrolyte lattice and reduces grain boundaries. • The LASBTP003 electrolyte shows an optimal ionic conductivity of 0.882 mS/cm. • PVDF-HFP-LITFSI-SN-10LASBTP003 SCE displays enhanced electrochemical performance. • Li/SCE/ LiFePO 4 full cell shows an excellent long-term cycling stability. NASICON-type Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP), with excellent air stability, a wide electrochemical window and low cost, is an attractive electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, its low electrical conductivity and poor interface contact impede its practical applications. Herein, LATP was doped with Sc and B elements, and the properties of the resultant LATP-based solid electrolytes were thoroughly studied. The structural characterization suggests that doping of Sc and B densifies the electrolyte structure, enlarges the lattice, and reduces grain boundaries. The optimized Li 1.3 Al 0.24 Sc 0.03 B 0.03 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LASBTP003) achieves a high ionic conductivity of 8.82 × 10 −4 S/cm, equivalent to 4-fold that of pure LATP. The composition of LASBTP003 electrolyte with PVDF-HFP and SN results in PVDF-HFP-LITFSI-SN-LASBTP003 solid composite electrolyte with enhanced ionic conductivity of 8.89 × 10 −5 S/cm, attributed to the reduced PVDF-HFP crystallization and established lithium-ion migration pathways at LASBTP003/PVDF-HFP interface. PVDF-HFP-LITFSI-SN-10LASBTP003 also displays a wide electrochemical window of 4.85 V and a high Li-ion transference number of 0.41. The Li/ PVDF-HFP-LITFSI-SN-10LASBTP003/Li symmetric battery delivers a long cycling of 1800 h under a current density of 0.1 mA/cm 2 . Moreover, LiFePO 4 /PVDF-HFP-LITFSI-SN-10LASBTP003/Li full cell delivers a long-term cycling stability, with a capacity retention of 86.92% after 1000 cycles at 0.5C. Overall, the proposed PVDF-HFP-LITFSI-SN-10LASBTP003 has great potential for LIB applications. Download: Download high-res image (195KB) Download: Download full-size image
