Boosting near-infrared quantum cutting of Ce3+/Yb3+ via Gd3+ -induced site-selective occupation in Y2SiO5 phosphors: Enhanced downconversion for silicon solar cells and NIR-LEDs

Viswadevarayalu Annavaram,Weicheng Xiang,Zihang Chai,Kangwei Zhu,Zaifa Pan

Enhanced quantum-cutting (QC) materials are highly desirable for promising applications such as solar cells. In this work, a series of Ce 3+ , Gd 3+ , and Yb 3+ tri-doped phosphors using Y 2 SiO 5 as the host were synthesized via a solid-state reaction. X-ray diffraction confirms that the dopants do not alter the monoclinic phase of Y 2 SiO 5 . Photoluminescence spectroscopy reveals that, the optimized tri-doped phosphor exhibits intense near-infrared (NIR) emission centered at 976 nm under UV excitation. Mechanism investigation reveals that Gd 3+ preferentially occupies the 7-coordinate Y2 site (associated with the Ce 3+ 392-nm emission), displacing Ce 3+ ions toward the 6-coordinate Y1 site (associated with the 425-nm emission). The Y1-site Ce 3+ emission at ∼425 nm (≈23,500 cm −1 ) is energetically closer to twice the Yb 3+ absorption energy (≈20,000 cm −1 ) than the Y2-site emission at ∼392 nm (≈25,500 cm −1 ), making the Y1 site more favorable for cooperative energy transfer to Yb 3+ pairs. This site-selective occupation effect significantly enhances the quantum-cutting efficiency. Furthermore, the synthesized tri-doped phosphor demonstrates superior performance in NIR phosphor-converted LEDs (pc-LEDs), achieving an electrical-to-optical conversion efficiency 1.55 times that of the co-doped counterpart. The output power of the tri-doped NIR LED is enhanced to 206.4% of that of the co-doped device. For solar cell applications, the short-circuit current density (J SC ) of the tri-doped device reaches 2.47 mA/cm 2 , with a power conversion efficiency (η) of 10.58%. The tri-doped phosphor solar cell exhibits an extra 0.1% enhancement in conversion efficiency compared to the co-doped counterpart. These results highlight the potential of Y 2 SiO 5 :Ce 3+ ,Gd 3+ ,Yb 3+ as an efficient spectral converter for boosting the energy yield of silicon photovoltaics.

Two birds with one stone: A multifunctional nanoplatform for photothermal sensitive detection and real-time inactivation of Staphylococcus aureus with NIR responsive Cu2−XSe@Van NPs

Xiaodong Lin,Bergoi Ibarlucea,Tao Peng,Ren Shen,Peiyue Li,Pan Zhang

Susceptibility point-of-care testing (POCT) and bacterial inactivation are crucial for food safety and clinical diagnosis since bacteria pose a severe hazard to public health and healthcare. To enable photothermal determination and hyperthermal inactivation of bacteria, vancomycin-modified near-infrared (NIR)-responsive copper selenide nanoparticles (Cu 2−X [email protected] NPs) with excellent photothermal conversion are synthesized here. Cu 2−X [email protected] NPs can be trapped on the surface of Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), forming a Cu 2−X [email protected] NPs/ S. aureus complex. Suspension (Cu 2−X [email protected] NPs) and sediment (Cu 2−X [email protected] NPs/ S. aureus ) can convert the NIR laser energy into a thermal signal that can be detected by the thermal camera at concentrations as low as 6.0 CUF mL −1 . Meanwhile, S. aureus can be effectively inactivated by localized temperature rises during temperature-based signal detection. The antibacterial efficiency can reach as high as 99.53%. The proposed strategy not only provides a sensitive POCT strategy for bacterial determination but also implements efficient inactivation of bacteria simultaneously.

Precise in Vivo Inflammation Imaging in the NIR-II Window Using 1065 nm Photoacoustic Probe for in Situ Visual Monitoring of Pathological Processes Related to Hepatitis

Zhidong Qiu,Chaobang Zhang,Liangliang Zhang,Shulong Wang,Shengqiang Hu,Shulin Zhao

The interaction between light and biological tissues in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window is weak, which can effectively reduce the scattering and absorption of incoming light by biological tissues and enhance the resolution and sensing ability of in vivo photoacoustic (PA) imaging. In particular, tissues that carry blood and water produce the lowest PA background in the wavelength range of 1050 to 1150 nm. However, the development of the NIR-II PA probe for the above window faces great challenges. To tackle this challenge, the reduction–reoxidation of an organic dye was used to develop a PA imaging probe (Hydro-1048) as the first NIR-II PA probe of a hydroxy radical (·OH) for molecular imaging in deep tissue. The ·OH oxidized the C–N single bond in Hydro-1048 to double bonds, which formed Et-1065. This conversion extended the conjugate system of the molecule and shifted the absorption peak from 520 to 1065 nm, which resulted in a strong PA signal after irradiation with a 1065 nm laser. At a detection limit of 0.6 nM, a good linear relationship within the range of 5–1000 nM was obtained for the PA signal intensity versus the concentration of ·OH. The developed NIR-II PA probe can be used for the noninvasive high-resolution imaging of ·OH in deep tissue, and the PA imaging of ·OH can also be used to visually monitor in situ pathological processes related to hepatitis.

Down-Regulation of HSP by Pd-Cu Nanozymes for NIR Light Triggered Mild-Temperature Photothermal Therapy Against Wound Bacterial Infection: In vitro and in vivo Assessments

Yan Zhou,Zekun Zhou,Xiaojuan Wu,Zefeng Wang,Wangdan Qi,Jing Yang,Liming Qing,Juyu Tang,Le Deng

Purpose We aimed to develop an oxidative-stress-activated palladium-copper nanozyme to reduce bacterial’s heat sensitivity by down-regulating heat shock proteins to overcome the shortcomings of conventional photothermal antimicrobial therapy and achieve mild photothermal bactericidal efficacy. Methods We first synthesized palladium-copper nanozymes (PC-NPs) by hydration and used transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to demonstrate their successful preparation. Their photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemo-dynamic therapy (CDT) activities were then determined by a series of photothermal performance tests and peroxidase-like performance tests, and the destruction of heat shock proteins by reactive oxygen species (ROS) was verified at the protein level by Western Blotting tests, providing a basis for the effective bacteria-killing by the mild-temperature photothermal treatment subsequently applied. We also validated this promising programmed and controlled antimicrobial treatment with palladium-copper nanozymes by in vivo/in vitro antimicrobial assays. A hemolysis assay, MTT cytotoxicity test and histopathological analysis were also performed to assess the in vivo safety of PC-NPs.Results In the micro-acidic environment of bacterial infection, PC-NPs showed peroxidase-like activity that broke down the H2O2 at the wound into hydroxyl radicals and down-regulated bacterial heat shock proteins. The application of PC-NPs increased bacteria’s sensitivity to subsequent photothermal treatment, enabling the elimination of bacteria via mild photothermal treatment. Conclusion The programmed synergistic catalytic enhancement of CDT and mild photothermal therapy achieves the most efficient killing of bacteria and their biofilms, which brings future thinking in the relationship between heat shock proteins and oxidative stress damage in bacteria.

Integrating Pt nanoparticles with 3D Cu2-xSe/GO nanostructure to achieve nir-enhanced peroxidizing Nano-enzymes for dynamic monitoring the level of H2O2 during the inflammation

Shen Man,Dai Xianling,Ning Dongni,Xu Hanqing,Zhou Yang,Chen Gangan,Ren Zhangyin,Chen Ming,Gao Mingxuan,Bao Jing

The treatment of wound inflammation is intricately linked to the concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the wound microenvironment. Among these ROS, H2O2 serves as a critical signaling molecule and second messenger, necessitating the urgent need for its rapid real-time quantitative detection, as well as effective clearance, in the pursuit of effective wound inflammation treatment. Here, we exploited a sophisticated 3D Cu2-xSe/GO nanostructure-based nanonzymatic H2O2 electrochemical sensor, which is further decorated with evenly distributed Pt nanoparticles (Pt NPs) through electrodeposition. The obtained Cu2-xSe/GO@Pt/SPCE sensing electrode possesses a remarkable increase in specific surface derived from the three-dimensional surface constructed by GO nanosheets. Moreover, the localized surface plasma effect of the Cu2-xSe nanospheres enhances the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs between the interface of the Cu2-xSe NPs and the Pt NPs. This innovation enables near-infrared light-enhanced catalysis, significantly reducing the detection limit of the Cu2-xSe/GO@Pt/SPCE sensing electrode for H2O2 (from 1.45 μM to 0.53μM) under NIR light. Furthermore, this biosensor electrode enables in-situ real-time monitoring of H2O2 released by cells. The NIR-enhanced Cu2-xSe/GO@Pt/SPCE sensing electrode provide a simple-yet-effective method to achieve a detection of ROS (H2O2、-OH) with high sensitivity and efficiency. This innovation promises to revolutionize the field of wound inflammation treatment by providing clinicians with a powerful tool for accurate and rapid assessment of ROS levels, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes.

Direct synthesis of eco-friendly carboxymethyl chitosan functionalized AgInS2/ZnS quantum dots: Utilization in ink and flexible film, warm-white LED, NIR-LED and counterfeit prevention

Zecheng Cao,Xiaojiao Kang,Wei Lü,Weiliang Guan

In this study, we present a novel synthesis system for AgInS 2 /ZnS (AIS/ZnS) core/shell quantum dots (QDs) terminated with carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) as a ligand, which has not been previously documented. By varying the Ag/In ratio, we achieved emission wavelengths ranging from 590 to 697 nm, with the maximum photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 33.1 %. The synthesized AIS/ZnS QDs powder was mixed with YAG phosphor and combined with a blue gallium nitride (GaN) chip to produce a warm white light-emitting diode (WLED), resulting in the color rendering index (CRI) increase from 74 to 82 and the correlated color temperature (CCT) decrease from 6486 K to 3873 K. Additionally, the AIS/ZnS QDs powder can be directly utilized with a blue GaN chip to create a near-infrared light-emitting diode (NIR-LED) capable of night vision. By adjusting the concentration of CMC in the AIS/ZnS QDs solution, the material can be directly used for writing and screen printing, or dried to obtain a highly transparent and luminescent flexible composite film. This research demonstrates the significant potential of CMC-ligated AIS/ZnS core/shell QDs in display technologies and flexible device applications.

Rational design of biomimetic-inspired nanoenzyme probes based on metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for NIR-II window photoacoustic imaging of ultra-trace H2O2 activation in vivo

Wenfang Huang,Shulong Wang,Min Wu,Xinping Huang,Qifei Mo,Jiayao Xu,Rong Wang,Qingmin Wei

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) plays a crucial role as a signaling molecule within cells. The concentration of H 2 O 2 differs in inflammation, cancer, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and neurodegenerative diseases compared to normal tissue. Therefore, the accurate determination of H 2 O 2 is important for the diagnosis and understanding of pathogenesis of disease. However, to accurately determine H 2 O 2 levels in vivo, highly sensitive biosensors and deep tissue penetrating imaging techniques are required. To address this challenge, we developed a biocatalytic porous structure composed of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) that encapsulates horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and 3, 3′, 5, 5′-Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in situ, enabling biomineralization while maintaining the catalytic activity and stability of natural enzymes. This leads to the formation of a hypersensitive biological probe BSA@HRP@TMB@ZIF-8 (BHTZ). BHTZ is an activatable near-infrared probe and its absorption signal in the second near-infrared window (1030 nm) is activated in the presence of H 2 O 2 . The findings indicate that the BHTZ probe has high sensitivity, low toxicity and high stability, and can be utilized to detect H 2 O 2 levels in mice with drug-induced liver injury, such as that caused by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in vivo. These results not only provide a highly sensitive and deep imaging method for monitoring physiological changes in H 2 O 2 levels in vivo, but also broaden the potential applications of MOFs in biomedical research and diagnostics.

ATP-Exhausted Strategy Induced Anti-Tumor Low-Temperature Photothermal Therapy Based on Rare Earth Nanocrystals Modified Hollow Porous MnOx Nanozyme with TME-Activated NIR-II Imaging

Xiaozhao Wang,Jing Li,Zhengtao Luo,Zhimin Gao,Yongxin Huang,Jiamin Luo,Xinyi Wang,Yaru Zhang,Meiling Tan,Zhiyao Hou

Insufficient adenosine triphosphate (ATP) can reduce the synthesis of heat-stress-induced heat shock proteins (HSPs) to promote the efficiency of mild photothermal therapy (mPTT), thus the rational design of ATP-exhausted strategy based on nanotechnology is an effective approach to resuscitate mPTT. Herein, Nd 3+ doped nanocrystals (NaYF 4 :Nd@CaF 2 , Nd-NCs) modified hollow mesoporous manganese oxide (H-MnO x ) nanocomposite (H-MnO x @Nd-NCs, MN) is synthesized, and loaded with glucose transporters (GLUTs) inhibitor KL-11743, noted as MN-KL nanozyme. In tumor microenvironment (TME), MN-KL can react with overexpressed glutathione (GSH) to release KL-11743, which can suppress the synthesis of intracellular ATP at the source by blocking glucose uptake to inhibit HSPs expression, meanwhile, MN-KL catalyzes the production of ·O 2 − / 1 O 2 /·OH and lipid peroxidation (LPO) to cleave existing HSPs. Through a two-pronged strategy with ATP inhibition and oxide accumulation, reducing the level of HSPs can be guaranteed for achieving efficient mPTT in both subcutaneous and in situ tumor models in mice. During this process, Nd-NCs can absorb near-infrared light and convert it into heat, and the quenched fluorescence of Nd-NCs by H-MnO x can be recovered through GSH-triggered biodegradation in tumors, thus the modification of Nd-NCs not only provides photothermal effect but also enables MN to own TME-activated fluorescence imaging.

Tm3+-Sensitized Thermal Enhancement of Visible and NIR-II Luminescence via Phonon-Tuning in Cs2NaTmCl6 Double Perovskite Nanocrystals for Advanced Ratiometric Thermometry and High-Security Optical Encryption

Gaixin Zhang,Kejie Li,Jiaqi Zhao,Zhiying Wang,Zuoling Fu

Luminescent materials relying on Yb 3+ or Nd 3+ sensitization often suffer from severe thermal quenching at elevated temperatures, which limits their performance in high-precision ratiometric thermometry and optical encryption. Herein, we report a phonon-tuning strategy in lead-free Cs 2 NaTmCl 6 double perovskite nanocrystals that enables thermal enhancement of Tm 3 + -sensitized luminescence across the visible (450–680 nm) and near-infrared (NIR, 860–1600 nm) regions under 808 nm excitation.Tm 3+ acts as an efficient multi-path sensitizer, facilitating emissions from various lanthanide activators (Nd 3+ , Ho 3+ , Dy 3+ , Yb 3+ , and Er 3+ ). Notably, Tm 3+ -sensitized upconversion emissions of Ho 3+ (∼660 nm) and Nd 3+ (∼600 and 614 nm) exhibit substantial thermal enhancement from 313 to 533 K, with intensity increases of 7.6- and 1.6-fold, respectively, arising from optimized cross-relaxation pathways. In contrast, Tm 3+ -sensitized downshifting NIR emissions from Dy 3+ (∼1320 nm), Yb 3+ (∼980 nm) and Er 3+ (∼1550 nm) are dominated by energy transfer from the Tm 3+ 3 H 4 and 3 H 5 excited states. By exploiting the interplay between activator thermal quenching and Tm 3+ thermal enhancement, highly sensitive NIR-II ratiometric thermometry is achieved, delivering a maximum relative sensitivity of 1.59% K–1 based on the emission bands of Yb 3+ ( 2 F 5/2 → 2 F 7/2 ) and Tm 3+ ( 3 H 5 → 3 H 6 ). This phonon-tuning strategy further provides a broadband temperature-responsive platform for multimodal optical sensing and information encryption.

Shang Qiu,Xiunan Wu,Dechun Geng,Wenzhen Pan,Zheng Li,Gang Wang,Daen Li,Cheng Li,Shuo Feng,Liang Zhu,Yaozeng Xu,Fenglei Gao

Cannabinoid receptors are widely distributed in many cells in Rheumatoid arthritis RA and strengthening factor to boost the development of RA diseases. Here, the hollow mesoporous copper sulfide (CuS) was used as the carrier skeleton and the cannabinoid type 2 (CB2) receptor agonist JWH133 was efficiently loaded inside of CuS through adsorption, then the outer layer was modified with hyaluronic acid (HA) to prevent the leakage of internal drugs. After the [email protected] nano carrier reached the target area, HA responsive cracked under RA microenvironment to realize the first step of accurate drug delivery of JWH133, and the thermally responsive CuS under near-infrared (NIR) promoted the release of internal drugs. Then, JWH133 specifically combined CB2 receptors on the surface of macrophage, synovial cells and osteoblasts to realize the second step of drug delivery. The inflammatory factors secreted by cells are significantly inhibited, and the activity of osteoblasts was significantly enhanced. Therapeutic effect by [email protected] of RA was well verified by decreasing levels of inflammation in vivo and improvement of inflamed and swollen joints of mice. The [email protected] nanocomposite showed satisfactory multidimensional therapeutic effect of RA in vitro and in vivo , which provided a novel idea for RA treatment.

Rapid synthesis of a Bi@ZIF-8 composite nanomaterial as a near-infrared-II (NIR-II) photothermal agent for the low-temperature photothermal therapy of hepatocellular carcinoma

Jinghua Li,Daoming Zhu,Weijie Ma,Yang Yang,Ganggang Wang,Xiaoling Wu,Kunlei Wang,Yiran Chen,Fubing Wang,Wei Liu,Yufeng Yuan

Hepatocellular carcinoma is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally. Advanced nanomaterials have emerged as effective approaches to liver cancer therapy such as photothermal therapy. However, limited penetration depth of photothermal agents (PTAs) activated in the NIR-I bio-window and thermoresistance due to heat shock proteins restrict the therapeutic efficacy of PTT in HCC. Herein, we prepared a Bi@ZIF-8 (BZ) nanomaterial by a simple one-step reduction method. Then, gambogic acid, a natural inhibitor of Hsp90, was efficiently loaded onto the BZ nanomaterial via physical mixing. The characterization of the nanomaterial and release of GA due to pH change or NIR-light irradiation were separately studied. Photothermal conversion efficiency was calculated, and therapeutic studies were carried out in vitro and in vivo. This nanomaterial exhibited a significantly enhanced drug release rate when the temperature was increased under acidic conditions and had good light stability under laser irradiation and a photothermal conversion efficiency of about 24.4%. In addition, this novel nanomaterial achieved good therapeutic effects with less toxicity in vitro. The BZ nanomaterial loaded with GA caused tumor shrinkage as well as disappearance and effectively downregulated Hsp90 expression in tumors in vivo. Moreover, this novel nanomaterial exhibited good biocompatibility and potential for application in low-temperature PTT with excellent tumor destruction efficacy.

Multifunctional targeted nanosystem based on aggregation-induced emission: enhanced synergistic mild-photothermal chemotherapy of prostate cancer via downregulation of heat shock protein 70 under NIR-II imaging

Bin Gui,Nan Jiang,Huan Pu,Fanglu Zhong,Xin Huang,Zhiwen Wang,Qianhui Liu,Hao Wang,Yanxiang Zhou,Qing Zhou,Qing Deng

Prostate cancer is the second most common malignancy in men, often presents at advanced stages, where treatment options are limited due to surgical intolerance and resistance to androgen deprivation therapy. Mild photothermal therapy (PTT) at 42–49°C selectively eliminates tumors while sparing normal tissues, but its efficacy is reduced by heat shock protein (HSP70) upregulation, which inhibits apoptosis. To address these limitations, we developed 2TToD@NPs, a multifunctional nanosystem combining second near-infrared (NIR-II) fluorescence imaging, mild PTT, and chemotherapy. The nanosystem, comprising an aggregation-induced emission agent (2TT-oC26B) and doxorubicin (DOX), targets prostate cancer cells via folic acid modification. Upon laser irradiation, 2TT-oC26B generates strong NIR-II fluorescence and thermal energy for imaging and mild PTT. Concurrently, DOX enhances tumor sensitivity to PTT by downregulating HSP70, reduces thermal resistance, induces DNA damage, and generates reactive oxygen species, triggering apoptosis. This synergistic approach overcomes the limitations of single-modality therapies. Our findings suggest that the multifunctional nanosystem effectively integrate precise imaging and targeted therapy, offering a promising strategy for advanced prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment.
