Inorganic scintillator materials have garnered widespread attention due to their applications in high-energy X-ray detection and imaging. However, developing materials that possess both high thermal stability and the capability to provide high-resolution X-ray imaging remains a significant challenge in this field. This article reports the synthesis of Ba 1.31 Ca 0.69 SiO 4 inorganic scintillator materials doped with Eu 2+ and Dy 3+ through a high-temperature solid-phase method. Their structure, photoluminescent properties under visible light and X-ray excitation, and thermoluminescence characteristics were thoroughly characterized. Experimental results indicate that the material's traps were enriched through the aliovalent substitution of Dy 3+ , enhancing the afterglow at room temperature. Under 350 nm excitation, the material demonstrated excellent thermal stability (maintaining 90% of its intensity at 150 °C compared to 30 °C) and a high quantum efficiency (IQE = 96.64 %). Furthermore, under X-ray excitation, the material exhibits a high electron storage capacity, which can be read out under near-infrared light at 870 nm, and can be rapidly erased under heating conditions or under visible light at 470 nm. Finally, we prepared flexible films using the phosphor, demonstrating a spatial resolution of 11.9 lp/mm −1 under X-rays, as well as showcasing the real-time and delayed imaging capabilities of the flexible film under X-ray exposure.

Currently, data-driven methodologies for discovering advanced luminescent materials are receiving considerable focus, driven by the potential to expedite material development timelines and provide multi-faceted insights into material properties. This study implements machine learning to develop a predictive model for emission wavelengths in Eu 2+ -activated A I B II PO 4 -type phosphors, thereby advancing rational design strategies. Furthermore, the model's performance is rigorously evaluated by synthesizing a novel Na 18 Ca 13 Mg 5 (PO 4 ) 18 :Eu 2+ phosphor and comparing its emitting wavelength with the value predicted by the model, showing satisfactory agreement. The compound Na 18 Ca 13 Mg 5 (PO 4 ) 18 exhibits a glaserite-type crystal structure and belongs to the R-3m space group of the Trigonal crystal system. The Eu 2+ -activated Na 18 Ca 13 Mg 5 (PO 4 ) 18 phosphor demonstrates intense broadband absorption spanning 250–400 nm in the near-ultraviolet region, emitting bright blue-cyan luminescence under 365 nm excitation. The high Ra (93.3) and low correlated color temperature (CCT: 5096 K) values of the as-fabricated w-LED lamp indicate that Na 18 Ca 13 Mg 5 (PO 4 ) 18 :Eu 2+ can act as a promising blue-cyan-emitting phosphor for full-spectrum healthy lighting applications.

The discovery of high efficiency narrow-band green-emitting phosphors is a major challenge in backlighting light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Benefitting from highly condensed and rigid framework structure of UCr 4 C 4 -type compounds, a next-generation narrow green emitter, RbLi(Li 3 SiO 4 ) 2 :Eu 2+ (RLSO:Eu 2+ ), has emerged in the oxide-based family with superior luminescence properties. RLSO:Eu 2+ phosphor can be efficiently excited by GaN-based blue LEDs, and shows green emission at 530 nm with a narrow full width at half maximum of 42 nm, and very low thermal quenching (103%@150 °C of the integrated emission intensity at 20 °C), however its chemical stability needs to be improved later. The white LED backlight using optimized RLSO:8%Eu 2+ phosphor demonstrates a high luminous efficacy of 97.28 lm W −1 and a wide color gamut (107% National Television System Committee standard (NTSC) in Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) 1931 color space), suggesting its great potential for industrial applications as liquid crystal display (LCD) backlighting.

Near-infrared (NIR) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) light sources are desirable in photonic, optoelectronic, and biological applications. However, developing broadband red and NIR-emitting phosphors with good thermal stability is always a challenge. Herein, the synthesis of Eu 2+ -activated SrY 2 O 4 red phosphor with high photoluminescence quantum efficiency and broad emission band ranging from 540 to 770 nm and peaking at 620 nm under 450 nm excitation is designed. Sr/Ba substitution in SrY 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ has been further utilized to achieve tunable emission by modifying the local environment, which facilitates the giant red-shifted emission from 620 to 773 nm while maintaining the outstanding thermal stability of SrY 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ . The NIR emission is attributed to the enhanced Stokes shift and crystal field strength originated from the local structural distortions of [Y1/Eu1O 6 ] and [Y2/Eu2O 6 ]. The investigation in charge distribution around Y/Eu provides additional insight into increasing covalency to tune the emission toward the NIR region. As-fabricated NIR phosphor-converted LEDs demonstration shows its potential in night-vision technologies. This study reveals the NIR luminescence mechanism of Eu 2+ in oxide-based hosts and provides a design principle for exploiting Eu 2+ -doped NIR phosphors with good thermal stability.

High-quality phosphors with color tunability are urgently needed for the full-spectrum white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) with healthy and comfortable lighting like the solar spectrum. Here, a Sr 2 Ga 2 SiO 7 : Eu 2+ phosphor with tunable luminescence color is reported, achieving a luminescence tuning from maize-yellow to yellow by changing the Eu 2+ ion concentration. Importantly, the quantum efficiency of BaSrGa 2 SiO 7 : 1.0 % Eu 2+ is as high as 85.7 % compared with 49.1 % of Sr 2 Ga 2 SiO 7 : 5.0%Eu 2+ , and the emission intensity of BaSrGa 2 SiO 7 : 1.0 % Eu 2+ retains 92 % of the room temperature (RT) emission intensity at 473 K by Ba 2+ substitution. Furthermore, the increase of Ba 2+ ion concentration also makes the phosphor achieve tunability from yellow to green. The as-prepared full-spectrum WLEDs exhibits a continuity spectrum like solar spectrum with an extremely high color rendering index of 93.5 and low correlated color temperature of 4562 K. This work provides new insights into the exploration of new phosphors for high-performance full-spectrum WLEDs devices.

Eu 2+ -activated phosphors are prominent candidates for next-generation solid-state lighting, but their performance is often limited by incomplete Eu 3+ reduction and poor thermal stability. Herein, we present a universal strategy combining a two-step synthesis with charge compensation to simultaneously stabilize Eu 2+ centers and suppress parasitic Eu 3+ . Initially, M 2 SiO 4 :Eu 2+ ( Pnma ) precursors were synthesized to promote effective Eu 2+ incorporation. Subsequent P 5+ co-doping induces charge-compensated substitution (Si 4+ →P 5+ ). This structural evolution yields the target phosphor phases: the yellow-emitting Li 2 SrSi 0.96 P 0.04 O 4 :Eu 2+ ( P 3 1 21) and the green-emitting Li 2 BaSi 0.96 P 0.04 O 4 :Eu 2+ ( P 6 3 cm ) with excitation/emission maxima at 394/580 and 365/520 nm, respectively. Importantly, the heterovalent substitution facilitates the Eu 3+ →Eu 2+ reduction and optimizes the defect distribution. Consequently, the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) is significantly enhanced from 26% to 78% for Li 2 SrSi 0.96 P 0.04 O 4 :Eu 2+ and from 32% to 83% for Li 2 BaSi 0.96 P 0.04 O 4 :Eu 2+ , along with improved thermal stability (93.3%@450 K). Fabricated near-UV pumped white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) incorporating these phosphors demonstrate superior color rendering ( Ra = 91.1) and stable electroluminescence across varying currents. The robust Eu 2+ stabilization and charge compensation paradigm paves the way for rational design of high-performance phosphors for advanced lighting.

The advancement of backlighting displays is dependent on the development of efficient narrow-band red phosphors. However, challenges such as low thermal stability and insufficient quantum efficiency restrict their widespread use in high-power LEDs. This study reports the synthesis of various solid solutions of Sr 1-x Ca x LiAl 3 N 4 :Eu 2+ (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.8) (SCLAN:Eu 2+ ) through the partial substitution of strontium with calcium using a low gas pressure sintering method (0.3 MPa). The intentional introduction of cation disorder by substituting Sr with Ca significantly enhances quantum efficiency and suppresses thermal quenching. Comprehensive analysis of SCLAN:Eu 2+ phosphors includes their structural characteristics and luminescence properties, as well as the synthesis and thermal quenching of white-light-emitting diodes (w-LEDs). The substitution of Sr with Ca results in a red shift of the emission peak from 654 nm to 687 nm, with the Ca 2+ substituted sample achieving an internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 83.2%, surpassing that of SrLiAl 3 N 4 :0.02Eu 2+ (SLAN:0.02Eu 2+ ). Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectra demonstrate the remarkable thermal stability of the phosphor, maintaining 109.91% of its original intensity at 425 K, which is critical for the applications of high-power LEDs. Furthermore, the development of a warm w-LEDs device yields a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4044 K and a luminous efficacy of 99.2 lm/w, with a color rendering index (CRI) of 83.5, utilizing commercial YAG:Ce 3+ yellow phosphor in conjunction with SCLAN:Eu 2+ . The performance characteristics of SCLAN:Eu 2+ phosphors indicate significant potential as red color converters for high-power LEDs and backlighting displays.

An ultra-broadband green-emitting phosphor K 2 ZnSi 3 O 8 :Eu 2+ with FWHM of 111.8 nm was developed via multi-site occupation of Eu 2+ . • Mg 2+ substitution for Zn 2+ induces local lattice stiffening and defect passivation, boosting PL intensity by 120% . • The optimized phosphor exhibits enhanced thermal stability with increased activation energy (0.261 eV vs. 0.251 eV) and complete intensity recovery after thermal cycling. • A warm WLED fabricated with KZn 0.99 Mg 0.01 SiO 8 :0.01Eu 2+ and commercial red phosphor achieves high color rendering index (Ra = 94.2) and low CCT (3552 K). • This cationic substitution strategy offers an effective route to simultaneously enhance luminescence efficiency, thermal stability, and moisture resistance in rare-earth-doped phosphors. Efficient broadband green-emitting phosphors are essential for human-centric healthy lighting. Herein, an ultra-broadband green-emitting phosphor, K 2 ZnSi 3 O 8 :Eu 2+ , was synthesized by high temperature solid-state reaction method for high-quality white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). Under ultraviolet excitation, the phosphor exhibits a broad emission band spanning from 400 to 750 nm, peaking at 505 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 111.8 nm, which originates from the multi-site occupation of Eu 2+ ions. Moreover, structural engineering via Mg 2+ substitution for Zn 2+ effectively enhances the material's performance. K 2 Zn 0.99 Mg 0.01 Si 3 O 8 :Eu 2+ , shows a 120% increase in emission intensity and improved thermal stability. A narrow-band green-emitting phosphor KAl 11 O 17 (KAO): Eu 2+ , Mn 2+ , was synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state reaction to evaluate its potential for use in high-quality backlight displays. Structural refinement reveals that Eu 2+ and Mn 2+ ions preferentially occupy distinct crystallographic sites: Eu 2+ resides at K + sites in the conductive layer, whereas Mn 2+ substitutes for tetrahedral Al 3+ sites within the spinel block. This spatial separation facilitates efficient energy transfer (ET) from Eu 2+ to Mn 2+ . Spectroscopic analysis of the optimally doped composition, KAO: 0.07Eu 2+ , 0.04Mn 2+ , indicates that the ET proceeds predominantly via a dipole - quadrupole ( d - q ) mechanism. The resulting phosphor exhibits bright green emission centered at 510 nm with an exceptionally narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 8.13 nm, a high color purity of 98%, and an internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 65.41%. Moreover, the material demonstrates excellent thermal stability, retaining 93.11% of its initial luminescence intensity at 423 K, corresponding to a thermal activation energy of 0.2917 eV. To demonstrate its practical utility, a white LED device was fabricated by combining the optimized green phosphor (KAO: 0.07Eu 2+ , 0.04Mn 2+ ) with a blue phosphor (BaMgAl 10 O 17 (BAM): Eu 2+ ), a red phosphor (Ca 9 KMn(PO 4 ) 7 : Eu 2+ ), and a 365 nm near-ultraviolet chip. The resulting device achieves a wide color-gamut covering 107.8% of the NTSC standard. Collectively, these results demonstrate that precise control of site occupancy and energy transfer enables the design of green phosphors that simultaneously exhibit narrow-band emission, high color purity, and robust thermal stability-properties that are essential for wide color-gamut WLED backlight displays.

In this study, a novel orange-red Sr 2 ScGaO 5 : x Eu 2+ phosphor was designed and produced adopting a high-temperature solid-phase technique, and its properties were optimized using a cation substitution strategy of Sr/Ca substitution and Yb 3+ co-doping. Experiments revealed that Eu 2+ doping causes the material to emit orange-red light at 606 nm, with a quantum efficiency of 67.51 %. Replacing Sr 2+ with Ca 2+ further red-shifted the emission peak to 646 nm, broadening the red-light region. Through co-doping with Eu 2+ and Yb 3+ , the thermal stability of the phosphor is significantly improved, with the light emission intensity retention rate at 423 K increasing from 59.84 % to 88.31 %, providing a new approach to enhancing the thermal stability of Eu 2+ -doped phosphors. The WLED devices prepared using Sr 2 ScGaO 5 :0.04Eu 2+ , 1.4Ca 2+ achieved a CRI of 88.1, with a CCT of 3715 K. The WLED device produced using Sr 2 ScGaO 5 :0.04Eu 2+ , 0.03Yb 3+ exhibited a CRI of 90.4 and a CCT of 4076 K. Both performances significantly outperform commercial WLED, effectively addressing the deficiency of insufficient red light in commercial WLED. This phosphor has also been successfully applied in fingerprint recognition, highlighting its potential for multi-domain applications.

Oxynitride Ba 3 Si 6 O 12 N 2 :Eu 2+ phosphor can usually exhibit high color purity emission spectrum and outstanding thermal stability because of its rigid structure which can be widely used in WLEDs. With the aim of further optimizing the emission intensity, color purity and thermal stability, Al 3+ -doped Ba 3 Si 6 O 12 N 2 :Eu 2+ green phosphors were successfully prepared by a high-temperature sintering method in the current work. The crystal structure was clearly investigated by the XRD patterns and Rietveld refinement . The expanding volume and elemental analysis proved that Si 4+ ions can be efficiently substituted by Al 3+ ions in the Ba 3 Si 6 O 12 N 2 :Eu 2+ phosphor. With increasing doping of Al 3+ ions, the full width at half maximum decreased from 66.88 to 65.12 nm with an optimal color purity of 65.95%, and the reason was clearly elucidated by the Gaussian fitting spectrum and decay times. Moreover, the emission intensity of Ba 3 Si 6 O 12 N 2 :0.1Eu 2+ , 0.03Al 3+ was 120% of the intensity of the Al-free sample, and the internal quantum efficiency could reach 70%. The thermal stability was also remarkably enhanced as Al 3+ substituted Si 4+ in Ba 3 Si 6 O 12 N 2 :0.1Eu 2+ , and Ba 3 Si 6 O 12 N 2 :0.1Eu 2+ , 0.03Al 3+ exhibited only 8% emission loss at 200 °C compared with that at ambient temperature. The outstanding thermal stability was clearly explained by the thermoluminescence spectra and configurational coordinate diagram. The results indicate that the introduction of Al 3+ ions can be a versatile method to improve the optical properties of silicon oxynitride.

A red-emitting Eu 2+ activated CaAlSiN 3 phosphor was successfully prepared via an atmospheric pressure solid-state reaction method with the aid of variable fluxes, namely SrF 2 , NH 4 F, BaF 2 , NaF, AlF 3 , CaF 2 and NH 4 Cl. The experimental results showed that the addition of SrF 2 flux effectively reduced the formation temperature of CaAlSiN 3 : Eu 2+ about 100 °C, improved the morphology of CaAlSiN 3 : Eu 2+ and suppressed the appearance of AlN impurity phase, suggesting that SrF 2 flux modifies the formation mechanism of CaAlSiN 3 : Eu 2+ . The phosphor of the CaAlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ produced with 4 wt% SrF 2 flux had an enhanced emission intensity, which was a result of the high crystallinity , the absence of AlN secondary phases, and the clean surfaces of the particles in the final product.
