Functional hydrogels based on carbohydrates are continually gaining research attention owing to their biological suitability and rationally engineered functions. Injectable hydrogels developed based hyaluronic acid (HA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) have been reported to be attracting for osteoarthritis (OA) treatment. However, the excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the oxidative stress microenvironment instigate chondrocyte mitochondrial damage and worsen cartilage degeneration, while conventional hydrogels cannot modulate oxidative stress. Consequently, this study proposed a strategy to rational design of dual-network PVA-HA hydrogels enables spatiotemporal control over anti-inflammatory cytokine release and ROS-scavenging functions, providing a disease-modifying therapeutic platform for OA through synergistic biomaterial-mediated microenvironment regulation. The designed hydrogels (PB-CaP@H) were enhanced by mineralized nanozymes (2 nm calcium phosphate (CaP) clusters modified Prussian blue (PB)), forming a composite hydrogel system that synergistically integrates near-infrared (NIR) response, anti-oxidative stress, and pro-cartilage mineralization functions. PB-CaP@H hydrogel has a porous structure (61 % porosity) and excellent mechanical properties (169 % elongation). Upon NIR irradiation, it warms the joint cavity to 48.9 °C, enhancing ROS scavenging (81 %) and accelerating mitochondrial repair. Micro-CT shows reduced cartilage damage. Molecular experiments confirm it repairs cartilage by up-regulating Col-II and SOX9. This injectable hydrogel offers a new OA treatment strategy by combining anti-oxidative stress therapy with cartilage repair.

Due to their internal continuity and smooth surface geometry, three-period minimal surfaces (TPMS) have been widely applied in the structural design and fabrication of bone tissue engineering scaffolds. To achieve a biomimetic simulation of natural bone tissue structure and enhance the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of the implant site, this study innovatively proposes a biomimetic gradient TPMS scaffold with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory functions. First, based on the hierarchical structural characteristics of compact bone and cancellous bone in natural bone, four TPMS gradient structures were parametrically designed. These four structures were then subjected to comprehensive testing to identify the one with the optimal performance. Furthermore, to address the limitation of single-function traditional bone repair scaffolds, this study used polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) as the matrix and prepared a multifunctional composite slurry by incorporating nano-hydroxyapatite (HA), nano-magnesium oxide (MgO), and tannic acid (TA). A series of test results indicate that the I-WP scaffold exhibits the optimal combination of mechanical and permeability properties, while also demonstrating excellent in vitro osteogenic differentiation capacity and antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. In summary, the gradient-structured composite scaffold prepared in this study achieves an integrated structure that enhances mechanical properties, boosts osteogenic mineralization activity, and provides synergistic antibacterial and anti-inflammatory functions. It offers new insights for the structural design and functional optimization of bone tissue engineering scaffolds and holds promising application prospects.

Implant-associated infection is one of the biggest problems in orthopedic surgery. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are well-known components of the innate immunity and less susceptible to the development of pathogen resistance compared to conventional antibiotics. Magnesium alloys as potential biodegradable bone implants have been received much attention in biomaterials field. This study investigated the deposition of calcium phosphate (CaP) coatings and loading of AMPs on the magnesium alloy surface by a biomimetic method. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) results presented that a microporous and plate-like CaP coating was processed on the magnesium alloy surface. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis showed the main component of coating was hydroxyapatite (HA). Degradation assay in vitro showed that the HA coating deposited onto the magnesium alloy was corroded more slowly than the bare one. The amount of AMP loaded in the HA coating was 11.16 ± 1.99 μg/cm 2 . The AMP loaded onto HA coatings had slow release for 7 days. The AMP-loaded coating showed antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus . Its bacterial inhibition rate exceeded 50 % after 4 days and the antibacterial effect was sustained for 7 days. The coated magnesium alloys loaded with AMP could improve rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMMSCs) proliferation. Furthermore, it could also promote alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity of rBMMSCs. Both radiographic evaluation and histopathology analysis demonstrated that implantation of the coated magnesium alloy into the rabbit femoral condyle had promoted bone repair and showed anti-inflammatory effect. The results showed that the AMP loaded onto HA coatings on the magnesium alloy surface could be considered an ideal orthopedic implant against S. aureus infection.

Sorption of U(VI) onto TiO 2 as functions of pH, ionic strength, contact time, soil humic acid (SHA), solid-to-liquid ratio and temperature was studied under ambient conditions using batch and spectroscopic approaches. The sorption of U(VI) on TiO 2 was significantly dependent on pH and ionic strength. The presence of SHA slightly enhanced the sorption of U(VI) on TiO 2 below pH 4.0, while it inhibited U(VI) sorption in the higher pH range. U(VI) sorption on TiO 2 was favored at high temperatures, and the sorption process was estimated to be endothermic and spontaneous. Reduction of U(VI) to lower valent species was confirmed by X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy analysis. It is very interesting to find that U(VI) sorption on TiO 2 was promoted in solutions with higher back-ground electrolyte concentrations. In the presence of U(VI), higher back-ground electrolyte made more TiO 2 particles aggregate through (001) facets, leading more (101) facets to be exposed. Therefore, the reduction of U(VI) was enhanced by the exposed (101) facets and more U(VI) removal was observed.

Natural organic matters (NOMs) are ubiquitous in the environment, but few systematic studies have examined the influence of NOMs on the sorption ability of magnetic sludge biochar. In this study, magnetic sludge biochar was synthesized, characterized, and used as a sorbent to remove tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solutions. The effects of pH, humic acid (HA), and fulvic acid (FA) on TC adsorption by magnetic sludge biochar were studied using batch experiments. Adding HA and FA can alter the adsorption behavior of TC, except for its pH dependency. The results of this study show that relatively low concentrations of dissolved HA (≤8 ppm) and FA (≤5 ppm) promote the adsorption capacity of TC, but higher concentrations compete against TC for sorption sites on the surface of magnetic sludge biochar. The results of this study promote a better understanding of the application of magnetic sludge biochar in real antibiotic wastewater. Keywords:adsorption;fulvic acid;humic acid;magnetic sludge biochar;tetracycline

Smart windows are highly desired as emerging optical devices based on appealing sunlight modulation, however, some prevailing limitations remain with low photothermal conversion and narrow spectral adjusting ranges, which drastically restrict energy-saving performance. Herein, a strategically designed smart window achieves significant breakthroughs, containing photothermal fillers of Au nanoprisms (AuNPRs) hybrid MXene nanosheets, and copolymerized thermochromic poly( N -isopropyl acrylamide)-doped hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels. By harness of AuNPR@MXene nanocomposites as photo-trapped nanoheaters, stimulating thermo-responsive behaviors of hydrogels boosts solar transmittance switching. The compelling photothermal features depend on the amalgamation: thermoplasmonic effect of AuNPRs, broad-band-absorbed AuNPRs endowed by MXene, and thermal conductivity from AuNPRs to MXene, generating synergistic effects. We maximize the advancing transmittance regulation by controlling the proportion gain of HA to increase hydrogen-bonded interaction. The resulting device with low-loadings AuNPR@MXene composites (0.9 wt% and 0.98 vol%) is capable of allowing 78 % of the maximum visible light through before thermochromism and blocking 98.04 % of sunlight penetration when photothermal stimulation. Besides, outdoor measurements show an achievable great indoor temperature drop of about 7 °C only 30 min irradiation, and a skin-cooling performance in the wearable, illustrating the potential of adaptive solar modulation application.

The release of internal pollutants in shallow lakes is a widely concerning environmental issue. Colloids widely existing in eutrophic shallow lakes will affect the release and migration of pollutants. In this context, the different effects of two colloids [humic acid (HA) and silica (SiO 2 )], either individual or in coexistence, on the adsorption and migration of ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N) in sediments under different ionic strengths (IS) were analyzed, through a series of batch and column experiments. It was found that, under a relatively low IS condition (1 mM Na + ), SiO 2 colloids greatly enhanced the mobility of NH 4 + -N in sediments. With IS increased (20 mM Na + ), the presence of colloids exhibited an impeding effect on the mobility of NH 4 + -N due to colloidal flocculation and precipitation. While HA colloids largely suppressed the mobility of NH 4 + -N in sediments under either low or high IS conditions. HA colloids are more likely to form aggregates and have more adsorption sites than SiO 2 colloids. In the NH 4 + -N–SiO 2 –HA system, HA colloids also showed a retardant effect on the transport of both SiO 2 colloids and NH 4 + -N, and the retardant effect increased with the increase of HA colloid concentration. Exchange coordination and hydrogen bond force, as well as the decreased stability of the colloid system, played an important role in such a retardant effect, which consequently resulted in more NH 4 + -N adsorption. The transport of colloids in the NH 4 + -N–colloids co-transport system can be successfully described by Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) theory. In addition, with an increase of IS, NH 4 + -N transport was enhanced because of competitive adsorption of the cations and NH 4 + -N on colloids and the porous medium . These results implied that abundant HA colloids and low ion concentration can reduce the risk of NH 4 + -N release and migration in sediments and consequently its exchange flux across the sediment-water interface.

Bacterial infection is a major challenge that could threaten the patient’s life in repairing bone defects with implant materials. Developing functional scaffolds with an intelligent antibacterial function that can be used for bone repair is very important. We constructed a drug delivery (HA@TA-CS/SA) scaffold with curcumin-loaded dendritic mesoporous organic silica nanoparticles (DMON@Cur) via 3D printing for antibacterial bone repair. Inspired by the adhesion mechanism of mussels, the HA@TA-CS/SA scaffold of hydroxyapatite (HA) and chitosan (CS) is bridged by tannic acid (TA), which in turn binds sodium alginate (SA) using electrostatic interactions. The results showed that the HA@TA-CS/SA composite scaffold had better mechanical properties compared with recent literature data, reaching 68.09 MPa. It displayed excellent degradation and mineralization capabilities with strong biocompatibility in vitro. Furthermore, the antibacterial test results indicated that the curcumin-loaded scaffold inhibited S.aureus and E.coli with 99.99% and 96.56% effectiveness, respectively. These findings show that 3D printed curcumin-loaded HA@TA-CS/SA scaffold has considerable promise for bone tissue engineering.

During liver fibrogenesis, liver sinusoidal capillarization and extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition construct dual pathological barriers to drug delivery. Upon capillarization, the vanished fenestrae in liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) significantly hinder substance exchange between blood and liver cells, while excessive ECM further hinders the delivery of nanocarriers to activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). Herein, an efficient nanodrug delivery system was constructed to sequentially break through the capillarized LSEC barrier and the deposited ECM barrier. For the first barrier, LSEC-targeting and fenestrae-repairing nanoparticles (named HA-NPs/SMV) were designed on the basis of the modification with hyaluronic acid and the loading of simvastatin (SMV). For the second barrier, collagenase I and vitamin A codecorated nanoparticles with collagen-ablating and HSC-targeting functions (named CV-NPs/siCol1α1) were prepared to deliver siCol1α1 with the goal of inhibiting collagen generation and HSC activation. Our in vivo results showed that upon encountering the capillarized LSEC barrier, HA-NPs/SMV rapidly released SMV and exerted a fenestrae-repairing function, which allowed more CV-NPs/siCol1α1 to enter the space of Disse to degrade deposited collagen and finally to achieve higher accumulation in activated HSCs. Scanning electronic microscopy images showed the recovery of liver sinusoids, and analysis of liver tissue sections demonstrated that HA-NPs/SMV and CV-NPs/siCol1α1 had a synergetic effect. Our pathological barrier-normalization strategy provides an antifibrotic therapeutic regimen.

Hydroxyapatite (HA) has good biocompatibility and biological activity which can be widely used in bone defect repair. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) can promote osteogenesis by enhancing angiogenesis and exhibit notable antibacterial properties. Sintering temperatures critically influence the physicochemical and biological properties of bioceramic scaffolds. In this study, porous ZnO/HA bioceramic scaffolds were fabricated at various sintering temperatures, and their structural, mechanical, and biological properties were systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that increasing sintering temperature led to reduced porosity and degradation rate, accompanied by a significant improvement in compressive strength. Biocompatibility remained consistently high across all temperatures, with all scaffolds exhibiting excellent cell compatibility and osteogenic ability. However, antibacterial efficacy declined with increasing temperature. Notably, bioceramic scaffolds sintered at 950 °C achieved an optimal balance of porosity, mechanical strength, and osteogenic potential, making them promising candidates for repairing critical-sized bone defects.

A reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/gold nanorod (AuNR)/hydroxyapatite (HA) nanocomposite was designed and successfully synthesized for the first time. An anticancer drug, 5-fluorouracil (5FU), was chosen as a model drug to be loaded in RGO/AuNR/HA. The fabricated RGO/AuNR/HA-5FU showed robust, selective targeting and penetrating efficiency against HeLa cells due to the good compatibility and nontoxicity of HA, and showed excellent synergetic antitumor effects through combined chemotherapy (CT) by 5FU and photothermal therapy (PTT) by both RGO and AuNRs under near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation. More importantly, this synergistic dual therapy based on RGO/AuNR/HA can also minimize side effects in normal cells and exhibits greater antitumor activity because of a multi-stage drug release ability triggered by the pH sensitivity of HA in the first stage and the combined photothermal conversion capabilities of RGO and AuNRs by means of the NIR laser irradiation in the second stage. This study suggests that the novel RGO/AuNR/HA multi-stage drug delivery system may represent a promising potential application of multifunctional composite materials in the biomedical field.
