Hollow urchin-like Mn3O4 microspheres as an advanced sulfur host for enabling Li-S batteries with high gravimetric energy density

Jianwei Liu,Jianan Wang,Lei Zhu,Xin Chen,Qianyue Ma,Zhicheng Xu,Shiyi Sun,Ning Wang,Qinqin Chai,Wei Yan

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are considered to be promising candidates for next-generation storage systems. However, the practical applications are still hindered by the severe capacity decay, mainly caused by the large volume change, polysulfide shuttle and sluggish sulfur conversion kinetics. Herein, hollow urchin-like Mn 3 O 4 (HU-Mn 3 O 4 ) microspheres as sulfur hosts have been synthesized by the hydrothermal method and calcination treatment, aiming to prevent the polysulfide dissolution (benefiting from the strong polysulfide anchoring effect of Mn 3 O 4 ) and alleviate the volume expansion of sulfur (benefiting from the special hollow structure). Meanwhile, the urchin-like thorny surface also facilitates the rapid ion/electron transfer and the abundant active sites for the fast sulfur redox kinetics. When used as the sulfur host in Li-S batteries, the S@HU-Mn 3 O 4 cathode delivers a high initial capacity of 1137.4 mAh g −1 with a slow capacity decay of 0.042% after 200 cycles at 0.2 C. Even under the conditions of lean electrolyte (E/S = 7 mL g −1 ) and low N/P ratio (N/P = 2.1), the S@HU-Mn 3 O 4 cathode still enables a stable cycling performance with a high gravimetric energy density (202 Wh kg cell −1 ), demonstrating its great potential in the development of future practical Li-S battery materials.

Intimately coupled Mn3O4 nanocrystalline@3D honeycomb hierarchical porous network scaffold carbon for high-performance cathode of aqueous zinc-ion batteries

L Chen,Y F Yuan,P F Du,S M Yin,M Zhu,S Y Guo

Herein, 3D honeycomb hierarchical porous network scaffold carbon is synthesized by a unique PVP-SiO2-boiling method with the boiling bubbles as soft template and SiO2 nanospheres as hard template. Then MnO2 nanosheets intimately grow on the carbon matrix and are further decomposed to Mn3O4 nanocrystalline with size of 7–9 nm. The obtained Mn3O4 nanocrystalline@3D honeycomb hierarchical porous network scaffold carbon has abundant mesopores and large specific surface area (92 m2 g−1). When used as a cathode material for zinc-ion batteries, the synthesized composites exhibit high reversible capacity (546.2 mAh g−1 at 0.5 A g−1), remarkable cycling stability (discharge capacity of 97.8 mAh g−1 at 3 A g−1 after 600 cycles) and superior rate capability (15.7 mAh g−1 at 10 A g−1). The kinetics analyses indicate zinc storage mechanism includes diffusion process and capacitive process of Zn2+ and H+ ions, and the capacitive storage is dominant. The outstanding zinc storage performance benefits from the structural advantages. The unique carbon matrix improves electronic conductivity of Mn3O4, facilitates penetration of electrolyte, and well supports Mn3O4 nanocrystalline. The small size and large specific surface area of Mn3O4 nanocrystalline induce significant capacitive storage effect.

Facile Synthesis of Reduced Graphene Oxide-octahedral Mn3O4 Nanocomposites as a Platform for the Electrochemical Determination of Metronidazole and Sulfamonomethoxine

Ya-Mu Xia,Xiang Ou,Yan Zhao,Meng Xia,Dong Chen,Wei-Wei Gao

A facile synthesis strategy of reduced graphene oxide (RGO)-octahedral Mn 3 O 4 (oct-Mn 3 O 4 ) nanocomposites using in situ one-pot hydrothermal reaction was reported. The RGO-oct-Mn 3 O 4 nanocomposites were drop-casted onto the surface of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to obtain RGO-oct-Mn 3 O 4 /GCE. DPV results revealed that the performance of RGO-oct-Mn 3 O 4 /GCE towards metronidazole displayed a linear ranging from 0.1 to 9.5 μM with a detection limit of 0.037 μM. For sulfamonomethoxine, it exhibited a linear ranging from 1 to 95 μM with a detection limit of 0.27 μM. Moreover, the proposed sensor had good anti-interference capability, high stability, satisfactory reproducibility, and was successfully applied in real samples.

A high mass loading flexible electrode with a sheet-like Mn3O4/NiMoO4@NiCo LDH on a carbon cloth for supercapacitors

Ruibin Liang,Si Liu,Jianrong Lin,Jingfei Dai,Jingyi Peng,Peiyuan Huang,Jianwen Chen,Peng Xiao

Mass loading is an important parameter to evaluate the application potential of active materials in high-capacity supercapacitors. Synthesizing active materials with high mass loading is a promising strategy to improve high performance energy storage devices. Preparing electrode materials with a porous structure is of significance to overcome the disadvantages brought by high mass loading. In this work, a Mn3O4/NiMoO4@NiCo layered double hydroxide (MO/NMO/NiCo LDH) positive electrode is fabricated on a carbon cloth with a high mass loading of 20.4 mg cm−2. The MO/NMO/NiCo LDH presents as a special three-dimensional porous nanostructure and exhibits a high specific capacitance of 815 F g−1 at 1 A g−1. Impressively, the flexible supercapacitor based on the MO/NMO/NiCo LDH positive electrode and an AC negative electrode delivers a maximum energy density of 22.5 W h kg−1 and a power density of 8730 W kg−1. It also retains 60.84% of the original specific capacitance after bending to 180° 600 times. Moreover, it exhibits 76.92% capacitance retention after 15 000 charge/discharge cycles. These results make MO/NMO/NiCo LDH one of the most attractive candidates of positive electrode materials for high-performance flexible supercapacitors.

Fabrication of CoFe2O4/Mn3O4 decorated ultrathin graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets membrane for persistent organic pollutants removal: Synergistic performance and mechanisms

Binghong Chen,Jing Wang,Renjie Li,Hongjun Lin,Bisheng Li,Liguo Shen,Yanchao Xu,Meijia Zhang

Integration of sulfate radicals-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) with separation membranes has enthralled considerable attentions because it can remove persistent toxic micropollutants in a low-energy and cost-effective manner. However, fabrication of such an integrated membrane simultaneously with excellent self-cleaning property, catalytic capability and long-term durability remains a challenge. Herein, for the first time, CoFe 2 O 4 (CFO) and Mn 3 O 4 (MO) nanoparticles were anchored on ultrathin graphitic carbon nitride (UCN) nanosheets via a solvothermal method to prepare heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts (MO/CFOUCN). Systematic characterizations demonstrated the successful preparation of powder catalysts with favorable degradation ability. Notably, the optimal composite catalyst possessed satisfactory degradation (94.5 %) and kinetic rate (0.1367 min −1 ) for norfloxacin (NOR) within 30 min. Thereafter, an integrated MO/CFO/UCN@P membrane was fabricated by vacuum-assisted filtration of the catalyst on a supporting membrane surface. It was interestingly found that, benefiting from the synergistic effect of in-situ oxidation and membrane filtration, activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) endowed the membrane with high removal rates (over 91.8 % for tetracycline, bisphenol A, humic acid (HA)) and high permeation flux (332.7 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) driven solely by gravity. Significantly, the membrane achieved a flux recovery rate of 91.9 % with the assistance of PMS after filtering HA solution. Furthermore, quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests confirmed that both radical and nonradical pathways contributed to the mineralization of NOR. Based on the detection of intermediates in the degradation process, potential NOR degradation pathways were proposed. Overall, this study provided new ideas about integrating Fenton-like catalysts with membrane technology for removal of persistent organic pollutants.

Shuyan Gao,Keran Geng

Manganese oxide coated with a uniform layer of N-doped carbon (Mn 3 O 4 @CN x ) is readily synthesized using a simple aqueous solution based chelating agent dicyandiamide mediated growth of MnCO 3 followed by calcination at 1000   °C. The Mn 3 O 4 @CN x can provide sufficient effective three-phase interface area due to the unique structures, which plays the important role in the complex three-phase interface electrocatalytic reaction in oxygen reduction reaction . The electron transfer , from the CN x layer to the Mn ions, is supposed to occur and the high positive charge be generated on the Mn 3 O 4 @CN x surface. As a result, these non-precious hybrid materials display an excellent activity for oxygen reduction reaction in terms of electrocatalytic activity , long-term stability, and excellent resistance to crossover effect.

Electroless synthesis of two-dimensional sandwich-like Pt/Mn3O4/reduced-graphene-oxide nanocomposites with enhanced electrochemical performance for methanol oxidation

Yingqiang Huang,Haoliang Huang,Qiongzhi Gao,Cuifen Gan,Yingju Liu,Yueping Fang

The two-dimensional sandwich-like Pt/Mn 3 O 4 /reduced-graphene-oxide (RGO) nanocomposites are successfully fabricated through a spontaneous and electroless approach, where Mn 3 O 4 is rationally utilized as a green reducing agent in the synthesis of Pt nanoparticles and also a superior metal oxide support for the growth of Pt nanoparticles. By using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to characterize the catalysts, Pt nanoparticles are found to highly disperse on the Mn 3 O 4 /RGO surface. Electrochemical measurements indicate that the Pt/Mn 3 O 4 /RGO nanocomposites not only possess remarkably excellent long-time stability and electrocatalytic activity toward methanol oxidation, but also reduce the overpotential of methanol oxidation significantly, as compared to the Pt/RGO and the conventional Pt/C catalyst, which could be ascribed to the unique sandwich-like structure and the synergetic interaction formed between Pt, Mn 3 O 4 and RGO . Therefore, the present approach provides some new clues for further development of two-dimensional sandwich-like electrocatalysts for fuel cells.

One-step synthesis of magnetic catalysts containing Mn3O4-Fe3O4 from manganese slag for degradation of enrofloxacin by activation of peroxymonosulfate

Yigui Tang,Zongsu Wei,Chi Wang,Ping Ning,Minghui He,Shuangyou Bao,Xin Sun,Kai Li

Landfill disposal of manganese slag is a significant environmental concern on both local and global levels. Using manganese slag to synthesis catalysts to degrade organic pollutants in wastewater is a promising pathway for the solid waste treatment. Here, we propose a simple method to prepare magnetic catalysts containing Mn 3 O 4 -Fe 3 O 4 (MMF) using manganese slag as raw materials. The MMF exhibits excellent degradation performance for enrofloxacin (ENR) with 97 % removal efficiency within 30 min and can be rapidly isolated from wastewater by magnet. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments demonstrated that 1 O 2 produced by the non-radical pathway is the principal active substance for ENR degradation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that Mn and Fe in MMF provide electrons for PMS activation and that the presence of Fe promotes the activation of the PMS and the cycling of Mn. This work paves the way for developing magnetic catalysts from manganese slag for the treatment of organic pollutants via advanced oxidation process.

Mn3O4@PDA nanozyme with high-efficiency enzyme-like activity and good biocompatibility reduce oxidative stress and inflammation to alleviate osteoarthritis

Yuquan Li,Qiumiao Chen,Dandan Han,Feng Hu,Jianping Wu,Junxu Yang,Zhongjie Pan,Wei Liu,Hao Yang,Qingjun Wei

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are closely associated with the initiation and progression of osteoarthritis (OA). Scavenging ROS within inflamed chondrocytes represents an effective strategy to treat OA. In this study, mimicking natural Mn-SOD, we successfully constructed a nanozyme with Mn 3 O 4 as the core and polydopamine (PDA) as the outer modification. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations combined with Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) detection revealed that the nanozyme demonstrates high enzyme-like activity. Furthermore, cytotoxicity assays confirmed its excellent biocompatibility. Within inflamed chondrocytes, Mn 3 O 4 @PDA nanozyme had been demonstrated to regulate the oxidative stress microenvironment, thereby inhibiting inflammatory responses. Moreover, injecting Mn 3 O 4 @PDA into the joints of rats with osteoarthritis could effectively alleviate the inflammatory response and relieve the degeneration of articular cartilage, reducing the OARSCI score by 85.25% at 8 weeks. Therefore, this study demonstrated that Mn 3 O 4 @PDA with high enzyme-like activity and good biocompatibility could efficiently scavenge ROS, reduce inflammatory responses, and promote cartilage regeneration, thereby achieving the treatment of OA.

A simplified electrophoretic deposition route for sandwiched structure-based Mn3O4/G composite electrodes as high-capacity anodes for lithium-ion batteries

Bei-Lei Yan,Deng Jun,Jun Wang,Tao Yang,Xue-Hua Mao

Based on characteristic multielectron conversion reactions, transition-metal oxides are regarded as potential anode candidates for the new generation of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because they are endowed with high specific capacity. Nevertheless, the inferior electronic conductivity and larger volume change lead to fast capacity decay during cycling. Herein, we propose a novel electrophoretic deposition strategy to prepare binder-free Mn 3 O 4 /graphene hybrid electrodes and overcome these two obstacles simultaneously. In the rationally designed structure, Mn 3 O 4 nanoparticles are well encapsulated in the conductive network constructed by interconnected graphene sheets. In the process of cycling, thanks to the excellent flexibility of graphene and the rich voids in this sandwiched structure, not only the structural integrity but also the unobstructed conductive network can be ensured. In addition, it is verified that electrode kinetics is a fast process for surface-controlled lithium storage. From this perspective, in addition to high reversible specific capacity (880 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 ), the prepared Mn 3 O 4 /graphene hybrid electrode possesses outstanding rate capability (678 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 ) and remarkable cycling stability (neglectable capacity decay after 500 cycles at 1 A g −1 ).

NixP and Mn3O4 dual co-catalysts separately deposited on a g-C3N4/red phosphorus hybrid photocatalyst for an efficient hydrogen evolution

Qinyi Mao,Dandan Li,Yuming Dong

Recently, much attention has been focused on the development of photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution. Up to now, efficient hydrogen generation is still greatly challenging due to the restraints of the surface redox reaction rate, and the introduction of a co-catalyst is one of the keys to this problem. Here, dual non-noble co-catalysts NixP and Mn3O4 were proposed and prepared on a g-C3N4/red phosphorus (CNP) hybrid structure with a high light adsorption capability by a two-step photo-deposition method. The photo-excited charge on the composite catalyst separate and transfer from C3N4 to red phosphorous due to a type I heterojunction structure. NixP and Mn3O4 act as reductive and oxidative co-catalysts, respectively. The hydrogen production rate was 5851.3 μmol g−1 h−1, 12.4 times that of pure CNP. The consistent catalytic activity in an actual 25 mL flask for hydrogen evolution over eight hours accumulated 245.08 μmol H2 under solar simulated irradiation. This work provides practical reference for the development of a novel inexpensive photocatalyst system.

Synergism of Interfaces and Defects: Cu/Oxygen Vacancy-Rich Cu-Mn3O4 Heterostructured Ultrathin Nanosheet Arrays for Selective Nitrate Electroreduction to Ammonia

Hongjing Wang,Qiqi Mao,Tianlun Ren,Tongqing Zhou,Kai Deng,Ziqiang Wang,Xiaonian Li,You Xu,Liang Wang

Achieving high efficiency in nitrate (NO3–) to ammonia (NH3) electrocatalysis requires the exploration of advanced electrocatalysts with a well-designed composition and architecture. In this work, a facile one-step hydrothermal approach was developed for the construction of novel Cu/oxygen vacancy-rich Cu-Mn3O4 heterostructured ultrathin nanosheet arrays on Cu foam (Cu/Cu-Mn3O4 NSAs/CF). Two-dimensional ultrathin nanosheet arrays could increase the exposure of catalytically active centers, and the heterogeneous nanointerface and oxygen vacancies synergistically improve the nitrate-to-ammonia activity over the active centers. Due to the desirable compositional and structural advantages, the Cu/Cu-Mn3O4 NSAs/CF demonstrated excellent performance for the electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia with high ammonia selectivity (87.6%) and Faradic efficiency (92.4%).
