Decoration of Ir clusters accelerates the generation of active species for high-efficient overall water splitting

Xue Liu,Shaojie Jing,Chaogang Ban,Junjie Ding,Jiangping Ma,Yajie Feng,Youyu Duan,Hanjun Zou,Xiangnan Gong,Kai Zhou,Bin Zhang,Liyong Gan,Xiaoyuan Zhou

Noble metal decoration is one of the most efficient strategies to enhance the activity of electrocatalysts for hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER). However, there is still lack of a comprehensive picture of how such strategy enhances the activity due to the complicated surface reconstructions and various electronic interactions on electrocatalysts during reactions, severely hampering the widespread utilizations of this strategy. Herein, we report that decorating Ir clusters on Fe doped Ni 2 P (Ir@Ni 2 P(Fe)) can reinforce the reconstruction of Ni 2 P(Fe) to generate more real active species via promoting the leaching of P element and ultimately improve the activities for both HER and OER. Specifically, such reinforcement leads to a considerably enhanced electron transfer and a substantially increased amount of active sites, ultimately playing a dominant role in boosting the HER performance from 176 mV over Ni 2 P(Fe) to 35 mV over Ir@Ni 2 P(Fe) at 10 mA cm −2 . As for OER, in addition to increasing the amount of active sites via the reinforcement, the decoration of Ir clusters provides high-valence Ir sites as extra efficient active centers, thereby resulting in dual promotional effects to enhance the activity from 270 to 200 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . Finally, using Ir@Ni 2 P(Fe) as both the anode and cathode, a low cell voltage of 1.50 V is required to derive a current density of 10 mA cm −2 for overall water splitting. The developed comprehensive insight is of clear significance to design advanced bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Support effect of biomass-derived carbon coated Ni2P catalyst for enhanced hydrogen evolution

Jinlong Ge,Hengwei Yan,Jie Fang,Miao Zhou,Jinlong Ma,Tao Qin

Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is essential for sustainable H₂ production, yet the development of earth-abundant catalysts with high activity in alkaline media remains challenging. Herein, a biomass-derived porous carbon supported nickel phosphide catalyst (Ni₂P@C) was fabricated using sawdust as a renewable precursor via a sequential carbonization–phosphorization route. The Ni(NO₃)₂·6H₂O concentration and the carbonization temperature were optimized. The carbon support effect regulated the electronic structure of Ni₂P and significantly enhanced the HER catalytic activity. Moreover, the carbon substrate provided abundant anchoring sites for active species and suppressed the aggregation of Ni₂P nanoparticles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the carbon support induced interfacial electron redistribution and optimized the d-band center, thus boosting the intrinsic catalytic activity. The as-synthesized Ni₂P@C catalyst delivered a low overpotential of 150   mV for HER and maintained long-term stability over 48   h. This work offers new perspectives for the rational design of sustainable electrocatalysts and underscores the promising application of biomass-derived carbon materials in advanced energy conversion technologies.

Fe-Doped Ni2P Nanosheet Arrays as Self-supported Anodes for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Chao Wang,Balaji Murugesan,Wenwen Li,Xinyi Ma,Qing Zhang,Qingqing Li,Zongyu Guo,Yurong Cai

Conversion-type anode materials, particularly transition metal phosphides (TMPs), are considered to be highly promising candidates for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their substantial theoretical capacity, which can reach up to 1000 mAh g–1, as well as their cost-effectiveness. But their practical application is constrained by significant changes, including substantial volume changes during charge/discharge cycles and poor reaction kinetics. Addressing these challenges requires precise nanoscale engineering to optimize material structure and functionality. Herein, we present the fabrication of a carbon-coated, Fe-doped nickel phosphide (Fe–Ni2P@C) nanosheet array directly grown on a three-dimensional nickel foam (NF) substrate via a simple hydrothermal and phosphating process. The hierarchical nanosheet array architecture offers several nanoscale advantages: the nanosheets provide abundant active sites for electrochemical reactions and significantly reduce Na+ diffusion distances, while the carbon coating effectively suppresses the volume expansion during cycling. Additionally, Fe doping at the nanoscale introduces phosphorus vacancies and increases the material’s intrinsic conductivity and electrochemical reaction kinetics. This synergistic nanoscale design enables the Fe–Ni2P@C nanosheet arrays to function as self-supported anode materials without the need for binders, additives, or additional processing steps. As a result, the material achieves exceptional sodium storage performance, exhibiting a rate capability of 317.16 mAh g–1 at a current density of 2 A g–1 and a reversible capacity of 418.89 mAh g–1 following 500 cycles at a current density of 0.5 A g–1. This study highlights the critical role of nanoscale engineering in overcoming the limitations of TMP-based anodes and provides a facile and scalable approach for developing high-performance, self-supported anode materials for SIBs of the future.

A Ni2P nanocrystal cocatalyst enhanced TiO2 photoanode towards highly efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting

Peng Wen,Feijing Su,Hui Li,Yinghui Sun,Zhiqiang Liang,Wenkai Liang,Junchang Zhang,Wei Qin,Scott M. Geyer,Yejun Qiu,Lin Jiang

Developing low-cost oxygen evolution reaction (OER) cocatalysts with high conductivity and excellent catalytic activity is highly desirable for mitigating interfacial charge recombination and accelerating the OER reaction kinetics of the semiconductor photoanode for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Herein, a hybrid photoanode integrating a high-quality light absorber, a bilayer TiO 2 nanorod-inverse opal (NR-IO) semiconductor and an efficient OER cocatalyst consisting of colloidal Ni 2 P nanocrystals is constructed via a spin-coating process. The resulting TiO 2 /Ni 2 P NR-IO photoanode yields an impressive photocurrent density of 1.93 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V vs . the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) under simulated solar illumination (AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm −2 ), corresponding to a more than 2-fold increase compared to the pristine TiO 2 NR-IO. The photoelectrochemical electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (PEIS) and photoluminescence (PL) results reveal that the Ni 2 P cocatalyst not only accelerates the interfacial charge transfer from TiO 2 NR-IO to Ni 2 P but also efficiently transmits the holes to participate in aqueous OER. Moreover, the Ni 2 P cocatalyst effectively prevents the substantial dark current observed with fully covered transition-metal-phosphide shell modification. This work is expected to spur more insights into integrating semiconductors with proper OER cocatalysts for highly efficient and stable solar water spitting.

Large-Area Synthesis of a Ni2P Honeycomb Electrode for Highly Efficient Water Splitting

Xu-Dong Wang,Yang Cao,Yuan Teng,Hong-Yan Chen,Yang-Fan Xu,Dai-Bin Kuang

Transition metal phosphides have recently been regarded as robust, inexpensive electrocatalysts for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Thus far, tremendous scientific efforts have been applied to improve the catalytic activity of the catalyst, whereas the scale-up fabrication of morphology-controlled catalysts while maintaining their desired performance remains a great challenge. Herein, we present a facile and scalable approach to fabricate the macroporous Ni2P/nickel foam electrode. The obtained electrocatalyst exhibits superior bifunctional catalytic activity and durability, as evidenced by a low overpotential of 205 and 300 mV required to achieve a high current density of 100 mA cm–2 for HER and OER, respectively. Such a spray-based strategy is believed to widely adapt for the preparation of electrodes with uniform macroporous structures over a large area (e.g., 100 cm2), which provides a universal strategy for the mass fabrication of high performance water-splitting electrodes.

Self-assembly of Ni2P/CoSe2 heterostructure as bifunctional electrocatalysts for urea-water electrolysis

Rongyao Wang,Jie Cao,Rui Zhang,Zhengguang Sun,Feng Wang,Huimin Wu

In this paper, M-Se-L (M = Co, Ni, Fe. L = Se At%) were synthesized by solvothermal method . The results from electrochemical testing showed that Co–Se-75% (CoSe 2 ) has the highest catalytic performance among all M-Se-L. Furthermore, Ni 2 P was compounded with CoSe 2 to form a heterogeneous structure Ni 2 P/CoSe 2 /NF. And the temperature and quality of NaH 2 PO 2 during the synthesis process were optimized. It was found that the Ni 2 P/CoSe 2 /NF synthesized at 300 °C with 1.2 g NaH 2 PO 2 had better catalytic performance. Only 1.383 V is required for UOR to reach 100 mA cm −2 . In alkaline urea-water system, the electrolytic voltage of Ni 2 P/CoSe 2 /NF||Ni 2 P/CoSe 2 /NF dual-electrode electrolyzer 1.607 V required to reach 100 mA cm −2 . The present work shows that Ni 2 P/CoSe 2 /NF is an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst with good prospects for industry applications.

Preparation of Ni2P/Al-SBA-15 catalyst and its performance for benzofuran hydrodeoxygenation

Tianhan Zhu,Hua Song,Xueya Dai,Hualin Song

The Al-doped Ni 2 P/Al-SBA-15 catalyst with high hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) activity was synthesized by temperature programmed reduction at a relatively low reduction temperature of 400   °C. The as-prepared catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), H 2 temperature-programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscope (TEM), NH 3 temperature programmed desorption (NH 3 -TPD), N 2 adsorption–desorption and CO uptake. The effect of Al on benzofuran (BF) HDO performance was investigated. The result indicates that the incorporation of Al into the SBA-15 support can promote the formation of much uniform, smaller, highly dispersed Ni 2 P particles on the catalyst. The Al also contributes to suppress the enrichment of P and promote more exposed Ni sites on the surface. In addition, the incorporation of Al can enhance the acid strength. The total deoxygenated product yield over Ni 2 P/Al-SBA-15 reached 90.3%, which is an increase of 19.4%, when compared with that found for Ni 2 P/SBA-15 (70.9%).

Simultaneously high-rate furfural hydrogenation and oxidation upgrading on nanostructured transition metal phosphides through electrocatalytic conversion at ambient conditions

Xian Zhang,Miaomiao Han,Guoqiang Liu,Guozhong Wang,Yunxia Zhang,Haimin Zhang,Huijun Zhao

We successfully synthesize Cu 3 P nanosheets and granular Ni 2 P nanocrystals on the surface of commercial carbon fiber cloth (CFC) (Cu 3 P/CFC and Ni 2 P/CFC) respectively by a vapor-phase hydrothermal route. The as-synthesized Ni 2 P/CFC and Cu 3 P/CFC as electrodes all show the bifunctional electrocatalytic performances towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), simultaneously all demonstrating the electrocatalytic activities of the furfural hydrogenation reaction (FHR) and furfural oxidation reaction (FOR) in alkaline media. Comparatively, the Cu 3 P/CFC exhibits higher FHR activity with almost ∼100% selectivity of the furfuryl alcohol (FAL) product and high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 92.0%–98.0% over the applied potential range of −0.05 to −0.55 V ( vs . RHE), while the Ni 2 P/CFC indicates higher FOR activity with almost ∼100% selectivity of furoic acid (FA) product and FE of 90.0%–98.0% at the applied potential of 1.2–1.7 V ( vs . RHE) in alkaline electrolyte containing 50 mM furfural. The DFT calculations results reveal that the (1–10) dominated Cu 3 P can obtain higher hydrogen coverage but restricted H 2 desorption compared to the (001) dominated Ni 2 P, therefore the adsorbed active hydrogen (H) atoms from water can be effectively used for the FHR process, resulting in high FE and current density. The superior FOR activity of the Ni 2 P/CFC is mainly stemmed from the formed high valence state Ni species during electrocatalysis. Thanks to the superior FHR performance of Cu 3 P/CFC and FOR activity of Ni 2 P/CFC, a two-electrode H-type electrocatalysis system assembled with the Cu 3 P/CFC as cathode and Ni 2 P/CFC as anode can be constructed for simultaneously electrocatalytic production of FAL and FA with almost ∼100% selectivity in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte containing 50 mM furfural in each chamber under the given experimental conditions, demonstrating high FE of 97%–99%.

High-performance supercapacitors based on Ni2P@CNT nanocomposites prepared using an ultrafast microwave approach

Tian Yunrui,Du Haishun,Sarwar Shatila,Dong Wenjie,Zheng Yayun,Wang Shumin,Guo Qingping,Luo Jujie,Zhang Xinyu

We present a one-step route for the preparation of nickel phosphide/carbon nanotube (Ni 2 P@CNT) nano-composites for supercapacitor applications using a facile, ultrafast (90 s) microwave-based approach. Ni 2 P nanoparticles could grow uniformly on the surface of CNTs under the optimized reaction conditions, namely, a feeding ratio of 30:50:25 for CNT, Ni(NO 3 ) 2 · 6H 2 O, and red phosphorus and a microwave power of 1000 W for 90 s. Our study demonstrated that the single-step microwave synthesis process for creating metal phosphide nanoparticles was faster and simpler than all the other existing methods. Electrochemical results showed that the specific capacitance of the optimal Ni 2 P@CNT-nanocomposite electrode displayed a high specific capacitance of 854 F · g −1 at 1 A · g −1 and a superior capacitance retention of 84% after 5000 cycles at 10 A·g −1 . Finally, an asymmetric supercapacitor was assembled using the nanocomposite with activated carbon as one electrode (Ni 2 P@CNT//AC), which showed a remarkable energy density of 33.5 W · h · kg −1 and a power density of 387.5 W·kg −1 . This work will pave the way for the microwave synthesis of other transition metal phosphide materials for use in energy storage systems.

Aqueous-phase synthesis of Ni2P within clay nanotube lumens for efficient catalytic nitroarene hydrogenation

Guoxi Deng,Yaotao Huang,Mingxian Liu,Xiaodan Chen,Yuri Lvov

The widespread application of transition metal phosphides (TMPs) is often constrained by the use of hazardous and costly phosphorus precursors as well as energy-intensive synthetic routes. To address these limitations, we report a green aqueous-phase synthesis of nickel phosphide (Ni 2 P) nanomaterials using sodium phosphathynolate (NaOCP) as a safe phosphorus source and nickel (II) chloride as the metal precursor. The resulting Ni 2 P nanoparticles exhibit long-term stability, as indicated by the well-maintained X-ray diffraction patterns after 30 days of storage under ambient conditions. This synthetic approach was further extended to fabricate a spatially confined Ni 2 P@HNTs nanocomposite through in situ growth inside the lumen of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs). The confined environment led to a significant reduction in Ni 2 P particle size (from ∼80 nm to ∼3 nm) and promoted uniform dispersion. Both Ni 2 P and Ni 2 P@HNTs show high catalytic activity in the transfer hydrogenation of nitroarenes, delivering up to 98% yield with broad substrate scope. Notably, the Ni 2 P@HNTs composite displays enhanced stability and recyclability compared to unsupported Ni 2 P in the reduction of both nitrobenzene and substituted nitroarenes. This work establishes NaOCP as the phosphorus precursor for the aqueous synthesis of robust TMPs and demonstrates the efficacy of clay nanotube confinement in designing high-performance catalytic systems.

Catalytic Hydrodeoxygenation of Phenolic Compounds Over Ni2P Particles Embedded in Dendritic Mesoporous Silica Nanospheres

Tianhan Zhu,Hang Gao,Yanbin Cui,Haiyong Wang,Qian Jiang,Mi Luo,Yuhe Liao,Chenguang Wang

Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) plays a vital role in upgrading pyrolysis oil derived from renewable biomass, yet developing highly active non-noble metal catalysts remains a challenge. Herein, we report a novel Al-modified Ni 2 P-based catalyst with three-dimensional dendritic mesoporous structure (Ni 2 P/Al-DMSN- x , x = 40, 20, 10, where x represents the atomic ratio of Si/Al). These Ni 2 P-based catalysts were comprehensively characterized and evaluated in the HDO of multiple phenolic compounds. Results showed that the Ni 2 P/Al-DMSN-20 exhibits outstanding catalytic performance, achieving complete conversion of m -cresol with exceptionally high selectivity toward methylcyclohexane. Furthermore, Ni 2 P/Al-DMSN-20 exhibited constantly fantastic activity without obvious deactivation over five consecutive recycling runs under condition of 250°C for 60 min. The excellent stability of Ni 2 P/Al-DMSN-20 was assigned to unique dendritic pore structure, which features large pore size and short diffusion pathway that facilitate mass transfer and enhance accessibility between reactants and active sites. Additionally, the modification of Al enables adjustable acidity, which is crucial for the cleavage of C─O bond in oxygenated compounds. Graphical Ni 2 P particles anchored inside dendritic channel for highly efficient hydrodeoxygenation of phenolic compounds.

Rationally designed Ni2P/Ni/C as a positive electrode for high-performance hybrid supercapacitors

Yanchao Xu,Shanshan Xiong,Shuting Weng,Juan Wang,Jing Wang,Hongjun Lin,Yang Jiao,Jianrong Chen

N-Doped carbon-incorporated Ni2P/Ni was reasonably designed and synthesized from nickel-based metal organic framework (Ni-MOF) precursors via a novel simultaneous carbonization and phosphatization process. Interestingly, subtle phosphating significantly improves the energy storage performance of supercapacitors (SCs). Ni2P/Ni/C composites exhibit a good energy storage performance with a specific capacitance of 257.2 C g−1 at 1 A g−1. The corresponding hybrid supercapacitor achieves an energy density of 25.4 W h kg−1 at a power density of 750 W kg−1, ultrahigh electrochemical cyclic stability (98.2% retention after 4000 cycles) and nearly 100% coulombic efficiency with a Ni2P/Ni/C-100 positive electrode and a porous carbon negative electrode, respectively. These can be attributed to the synergetic effects of N-doped carbon and metal phosphates, which ensure good electrical conductivity and provide rich reactive sites as well as stable architecture. These results indicate that the controlled pyrolysis of MOFs is an effective method to design a kind of high-performance electrode material for hybrid supercapacitors.
