Mohite Dadaso D.,Chavan Sachin S.,Lokhande P. E.,Dubal Sumit,Kadam Vishal,Jagtap Chaitali,Rednam Udayabhaskar,Salve Maruti,Chaure N. B.,Al-Asbahi Bandar Ali,Kumar Yedluri Anil

Supercapacitors (SCs) have fascinating potential for the energy storage systems of the future due to their exceptional power delivery and quick charge and discharge capabilities. However, its energy density continues to be a barrier to its general use. This study investigates the electrochemical properties of electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber (NF) composites embedded with cobalt hydroxide (Co(OH) 2 ) nanoparticles (NPs) for SC electrodes. The synthesis of CNFs involves electrospinning PAN solutions loaded with Co(OH) 2 precursors, followed by heat treatment to enhance structural integrity and electrochemical performance. The crystallographic and morphological study of the composite fibres was conducted through different characterization methods. The electrochemical performance of Co 3 O 4 /PAN CNFs-based composite electrodes is evaluated through CV, GCD, and EIS measurements, revealing their suitability for SC applications. The findings reveal that the synergistic effects of Co 3 O 4 NPs within the PAN NFs contribute to enhanced specific capacitance, cyclic stability, and rate capability, thus offering significant prospects for the development of high-performance SCs. The Co 3 O 4 /PAN CNFs//AC device is constructed using PVA/KOH gel electrolyte, which demonstrated an energy density of 11.19 Whkg −1 at a power density of 1000 Wkg −1 . The device exhibits 69% capacitance retention over 3000 cycles at 100 mVs −1 , indicating strong cycling stability and electrochemical reversibility, which are crucial for practical applications.

Thermal decomposition and combustion behavior of ion conductive PEO-PAN based energetic composites

Shuai-Zhong Wang,Jie-Yao Lyu,Wei He,Pei-Jin Liu,Qi-Long Yan

Electrically controlled solid propellant (ECSP) is one promising solution for thrust adjustment and repeated ignition of conventional solid rocket motors (SRM). However, the widely studied ECSP based on hydroxylammonium nitrate (HAN) faces the problems of strong hygroscopicity and low thermal stability, which can lead to failure of ECSP. Inspired by polyethylene oxide-polyacrylonitrile (PEO-PAN) based solid polymer electrolyte , the new PEO-PAN based ion conductive energetic composites (ECs) have been designed and evaluated in this paper. The formulation was theoretically determined based on the energy content, and the samples were prepared by a conventional milling mixing method. The morphology, ionic conductivity , thermal reactivity, decomposition gaseous products and combustion behavior of these new ECs have been comprehensively studied. It has been shown that the initial decomposition temperature of PEO-PAN based ECs is around 243 °C with heat release of 1677.8–1873.9 J·g −1 depending on the oxidizer and polymer content. Meanwhile, the dependences of the ionic conductivity on the burning rate are evaluated. The results showed that the burning rate decreases as ionic conductivity increases. One of these ECs has a high ionic conductivity with a low burning rate under pressure, which is suitable for controllable ECSP.

Electrospun PAN-HNTs composite nanofiber membranes for efficient electrostatic capture of particulate matters

Shiqian Hu,Ruowang Chen,Peng Lu,Zida Zheng,Gangwei Gu,Mingyuan Wang,Xiaowei Zhang

The fine particulate matter (PM) pollution has become a serious concern to public health. As the core part of PM air filters, high-performance electrostatic nanofiber membranes are urgently needed. However, the existing air filters remain challenging to further decrease the pressure drop to improve the wearer comfort. On the other hand, the rapidly disappearing static electricity of the existing electrostatic nanofiber inevitably gives rise to a relatively short service life. Here, we demonstrate a novel and enhanced electrostatic nanofiber membrane by introducing the halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) to the traditional electrospun PAN nanofiber membrane. The optimal PAN-HNTs nanofiber membrane shows a high removal efficiency of 99.54%, a low pressure drop of 39 Pa, and a high quality factor of 0.89 Pa−1. This greatly improved filtration performance can be attributed to the increased surface area and diameter of nanofiber after introducing the HNTs as additives with suitable doping concentrations. More importantly, compared with the pure PAN nanofiber membrane, the electrostatic capacity of the PAN-HNTs nanofiber membrane is significantly enhanced, which is confirmed by the leaf electroscope. After introducing the HNTs as additives, the surface of the PAN-HNTs nanofiber membrane becomes hydrophilic, which benefits for preventing foulants from attaching to the surface. We anticipate that the PAN-HNTs nanofibers as high-performance membrane air filters will bring great benefits to public health.

Liquid Metal Nanotransformers for Drug-Resistant Pan-Cancer Therapy in Patient-Derived Organoids

Xiaojie Yuan,Xuelin Wang,Zhongyao Chen,Shuo Wang,Weining Gao,Ziyi Chen,Runyang Li,Cheng Hao,Lei Zhang,Qiongqiong Zhang,Ke Zhang,Mei Yu,Qian Liu,Jingxuan Wang,Huiping Li,Simpkins Fiona,Jing Liu,Qiang Liu,Peng Liu,Yawei Hu

Drug resistance remains a major obstacle in cancer therapy, and direct mechanical disruption of cellular structures offers a promising strategy for overcoming it, highlighting the urgent clinical need for an effective and universal pan-cancer treatment. Here, a cryo-responsive liquid metal (LM) nanotransformer platform is developed. It undergoes dramatic deformation under freezing, physically disrupting lysosomal membranes and inducing potent cytotoxicity, particularly against drug-resistant tumors, thus offering a broadly applicable pan-cancer treatment. To enhance deformation efficiency of LM transformers, bismuth (Bi) is incorporated into gallium (Ga) to form biphasic Bi-Ga alloy particles, which reduces Ga supercooling and promotes crystallization during freezing. The biosafety of LM particles is evaluated across multiple organoid models upon maximum contact. Based on 11 tumor organoid models including lung, colorectal, and ovarian cancers, the significant anti-tumor effects of LM-assisted cryotherapy are demonstrated, particularly Bi-Ga combined with chemotherapy illustrating the strongest anti-tumor efficacy. Transcriptomic analysis reveals LM anti-tumor mechanism on multiple cancers with altering gene expression related to necroptosis, metabolic regulation, and cellular stress. In addition, tumors receiving LM cryo-treatment exhibited hallmark features of immunogenic cell death. In immune-competent drug-resistant lung organoids, Bi-Ga cryo-treatment modulates tumor microenvironment and enhances immunogenicity. Collectively, this study establishes a universal LM nanotransformer-enabled pan-cancer strategy, offering a clinically viable and drug-free approach for overcoming drug resistance.

A high-performance flexible coaxial BTO/PAN piezoelectric nanofibers for facial expression analysis

Junfei Lin,Junbin Yu,Fangyuan Chen,Xuyin Jia,Jiahe Li,Juanhong Zhao,Jian He,Xiaojuan Hou,Jiliang Mu,Xiujian Chou

Piezoelectric nanofibers that combine the flexibility of organic polymers with the high piezoelectricity of inorganic ceramics have garnered significant attention in the field of wearable devices. However, a significant obstacle is the loss of sensing ability, due to the weak interfacial bonding between inorganic fillers and organic matrices. Here, a novel composite nanofiber is proposed via coaxial electrospinning strategy, which couples two functional units of Barium Titanate (BTO)/Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) into the entirety. In addition, the dual-solvent synergistic strategy combined with surface modification enhances interfacial bonding, fully leveraging the synergistically enhanced piezoelectricity to boost performance. The developed piezoelectric sensor, possessing high sensitivity and durability, can accurately distinguish various subtle facial muscle movements. More importantly, with the aid of the optimized deep learning model based on the electrical outputs, the different emotional states, including surprise, disgust, happiness, anger, and sadness, can be classified with an accuracy of 98.70 %. This capability of the sensor and related algorithm model can underscore the practical utility of human physiological monitoring, which provides an opens new avenues for the development of human–machine interaction technologies.

64Cu-Labeled Stapled Peptide-Based Radiopharmaceuticals Targeting MDM2/MDMX for Pan-p53 Tumors

Hao Tian,Quan Zuo,Siqi Zhang,Hongyi Huang,Dengfu Wu,Zihan Huang,Xiangding Liu,Lin Xie,Yiding Zhang,Hailong Zhang,Yekuan Shi,Suping Li,Ming-Rong Zhang,Rui Wang,Kuan Hu

The development of ideal peptide-based radiopharmaceuticals faces critical bottlenecks, primarily due to limited cellular internalization and insufficient deep tissue penetration of peptide carriers. To address this, we developed an intracellular targeting and DNA-adjacent radiotherapeutic strategy using stapled peptides. The MDM2/MDMX-targeting stapled peptide-based radiopharmaceuticals, denoted as [64Cu]Cu-DOTA-STP, exhibited prolonged circulation in the bloodstream and slow systemic clearance. Furthermore, in vitro studies demonstrated that nearly 50% of administered [64Cu]Cu-DOTA-STP was internalized, achieving efficient intracellular accumulation. In addition, [64Cu]Cu-DOTA-STP demonstrated high tumor accumulation, with a standard uptake value of up to 9.39 ± 1.52%ID/g. Finally, targeted radionuclide therapy confirmed that [64Cu]Cu-DOTA-STP effectively inhibited tumor growth, irrespective of p53 phenotypes. Taken together, this study leveraged PET imaging as a noninvasive and longitudinal tool to elucidate the in vivo fate of stapled peptides and demonstrated that stapled peptides can serve as ideal vehicles for developing intracellular protein-targeting radiopharmaceuticals, achieving efficient 64Cu-based targeted radionuclide therapy.

Electrospun Lignin/PAN Carbon Nanofiber-Supported CeO2/NiCo2O4 Nanoflowers as Electrodes for Supercapacitors

Yan Zhiqi,Li Xinmei,Yang Rui,Jia Liming

To address the global challenge of fossil fuel consumption, a self-supporting supercapacitor electrode material was successfully fabricated to enable efficient utilization of renewable energy. In this study, lignin/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) carbon nanofibers (LCNFs), prepared via electrospinning, served as a conductive scaffold and growth substrate. This enabled the in situ growth of NiCo 2 O 4 and CeO 2 , co-constructing a composite electrode material (denoted as CeO 2 /NiCo 2 O 4 @LCNFs) characterized by a petal-like nanosheet architecture. Results indicate that, compared to LCNFs, this uniquely structured composite enhances the exposure of active sites and facilitates charge and ion transport, thereby leading to significantly improved electrochemical performance. Furthermore, the influence of varying Ce content on the morphology, structure, and electrochemical properties of the composite was investigated. The CeO 2 /NiCo 2 O 4 @LCNFs composite exhibited optimal morphology and electrochemical properties when the Ce addition amount was 0.5 mmol. It delivered a specific capacitance of 643.6 F g -1 (at 0.5 A g -1 ) and maintained a capacitance retention of 82.07% after 5000 cycles at 5 A g -1 . These results demonstrate the promising application potential of this electrode material and offer new perspectives for the development of novel electrode materials.

Bio-inspired molecular bridge anchoring GO laminates onto PAN substrate for molecular separation

Ning Zhang,Hui Yu,Haoyu Cui,Hui Xiao,Xiaobin Jiang,Yan Dai,Xiaopeng Zhang,Junjiang Bao,Gaohong He

Graphene oxide (GO) films are highlighted to have great potential in water purification. The highly chemical and thermally stable polyacrylonitrile (PAN) competently constructs a superior substrate supporting the ultrathin GO laminates under various aqueous environments. However, the lack of available functional groups of PAN substrate, which inevitably leads to an undesirable water-induced peeling of the stacked GO laminates, greatly limits its practical application in constructing a stable GO composite membrane. A hydrolysis-condensation-induced bridge strategy is reported in which a bio-inspired molecular bridge generates a strong adhesion of PAN substrate to GO laminate, meanwhile interlaminar molecular bridges also form to generate a robust GO laminate with excellent resistance to swelling. Such GO composite membranes exhibit structural durability in the treatment of dye-containing wastewater for several days or even longer. The interfacial molecular bridge has little effect on the size-sieving and unique transport capability of the GO laminates. Comparable water permeability with the pristine GO laminates and nearly complete rejection to dyes (i.e. Congo red, methylene blue, and methyl orange) were obtained. The combination of easy fabrication, robust stability, and high performance make the PAN-supported GO membranes advantageous for practical application in textile wastewater purification.

3D-Printed PMMA-Regulated PAN-Based Gel Polymer Electrolytes for Lithium Metal Batteries

Jiajia Dong,Xinghua Liang,Yangying Ou,Qinglie Mo,Pengzhen Chen,Lei Zhang,Lingxiao Lan

Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) have emerged as promising electrolytes for lithium metal batteries owing to their high ionic conductivity, mechanical flexibility, and reduced risk of electrolyte leakage. However, PAN-based GPEs still suffer from limited ion transport caused by the semi-crystalline structure of PAN chains. In this work, polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/lithium aluminum titanium phosphate (LATP)/lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) gel polymer electrolytes were fabricated via direct ink writing (DIW) 3D printing, where PMMA was introduced to regulate the PAN matrix and enhance Li+transport. The results reveal that PMMA incorporation effectively reduces PAN crystallinity, increases the amorphous fraction, and modifies the local functional-group environment of the polymer matrix, while LATP fillers further improve ionic transport and mechanical stability. The optimized PPM8:2 gel polymer electrolyte delivers a room-temperature ionic conductivity of 4.22 × 10−4S cm−1, a Li+transference number of 0.624, and an electrochemical stability window of 4.75 V. When applied in LiFePO4|Li batteries, it maintains a discharge capacity of approximately 150 mAh g−1after 100 cycles at 0.1 C with excellent rate capability and cycling stability. This work provides an effective approach to developing PAN-based gel polymer electrolytes for high-performance lithium metal batteries.

Preparation of the Carbonized Zif−8@PAN Nanofiber Membrane for Cadmium Ion Adsorption

Hui Sun,Jiangli Feng,Yaoyao Song,Lei Xu,Xiaogang Cui,Bin Yu

The zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF−8)@polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber membrane was prepared and carbonized for heavy metal cadmium ion (Cd2+) adsorption in aqueous medium. Zinc oxide (ZnO) was first sputtered onto the surface of the PAN electrospun nanofiber membrane to provide a metal ion source. Then, the ZIF−8@PAN nanofiber membrane was prepared via in situ solvothermal reaction and carbonized in a tube furnace at 900 °C under a N2atmosphere to enhance adsorption performance. The synthesized ZIF−8 particles with polyhedral structure were uniformly immobilized on the surface of the PAN electrospun nanofiber membrane. After being heated at 900 °C, the polygonal ZIF−8 shrank, and the carbonized ZIF−8@PAN nanofiber membrane was obtained. Compared with the nanofiber membrane without being carbonized, the adsorption capacity of the carbonized ZIF−8@PAN nanofiber membrane reached 102 mg L−1, and its Cd2+adsorption efficiency could be more than 90% under the adsorption temperature of 35 °C and solution of pH = 7.5 conditions. According to the adsorption thermodynamics analysis, the Cd2+adsorption process of the carbonized ZIF−8@PAN nanofiber membrane was spontaneous. The whole Cd2+adsorption process was more suitably described by the pseudo second-order adsorption kinetics model, indicating that there exists a chemical adsorption mechanism besides physical adsorption.

Carbonization of electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/cellulose nanofibril (CNF) hybrid membranes and its mechanism

Xu Wenlong,Xin Binjie,Yang Xue

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/cellulose nanofibril (CNF) based carbon nanofiber membranes were produced by electrospinning and carbonization method, in which the CNF amount was 1 wt%. In order to control the spinning process, the rheological properties of the PAN/CNF suspensions were measured before electrospinning. In addition, the effects of CNF particle size on the structure and properties of carbon nanofiber membranes were investigated systematically by SEM, FTIR and mechanical test. Meanwhile, the reaction mechanism of PAN and PAN/CNF nanofiber membranes in the process of stabilization and carbonization was also fully discussed. The results show that the addition of CNFs can improve the breaking strength and conductivity of PAN carbon nanofiber membrane. Moreover, CNFs also can accelerate the carbonization rate and reduce the reaction conditions of PAN nanofiber membranes. Therefore, CNFs are effective enhancers for PAN based carbon nanofiber membranes.

Performance of “Polymer-in-Salt” Electrolyte PAN-LiTFSI Enhanced by Graphene Oxide Filler

Bo Wu,Liping Wang,Zhiling Li,Mingjuan Zhao,Kaihao Chen,Sihong Liu,Yunqiang Pu,Jingze Li

Exploring solid state electrolytes with high ionic conductivity and good electrochemical stability is of prime importance for the development of safe batteries. In this study, we prepare a high-performance "polymer-in-salt" solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) by using polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as a host polymer, bistrifluoromethanesulfonimide lithium salt (LiTFSI) as an electrolyte salt, and different loading graphene oxide (GO) as a nano-filler. PAN-LiTFSI electrolyte filled with 0.9 wt% GO nanosheet exhibits an ionic conductivity of 1.1 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 30°C, which is almost one order of magnitude higher than that of the filler-free one. In addition, the anodic potential and the lithium ion transference number also increase to 5 V and 0.4, respectively. The enhancement on ionic conductivity is attributed to a 3D fast ion transport network constructed by GO nanosheets and a further decoupling of ion transport from segmental dynamics.
