Three-dimensionally hierarchical NiCoP@PANI architecture for high-performance hydrogen evolution reaction

Jiawei Zhang,Yu Li,Zhe Wang,Yuqing Wang,Fan Wang,Minghua Chen

Ternary phosphides are attracting great attention in the field of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution and they have been verified to be highly active for water splitting. Herein, we developed polyaniline (PANI) coated nickel–cobalt metal phosphides nanowire arrays grown on nickel foam (NiCoP@PANI) as hydrogen evolution reaction electrocatalysts. The appearance of PANI with excellent electric conductivity can accelerate H+ in electrolyte transfer into H2 and offer a masking layer to restrain the damage of electrode structural. Besides, the 3D porous structural of nickel foam can act as a skeleton to avoid electrode structure collapse and a channel for electron transfer. The optimized NiCoP@PANI can drive a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at low overpotential of 80.6 mV in 1 M KOH solution, and satisfactory electrochemical stability with unbroken structure and unchanged composition after electrochemical test.

Photothermal/photodynamic synergistic antibacterial Nanocellulose film modified with antioxidant MXene-PANI Nanosheets

Yuqun Cai,Huanli Gao,Yifei Qu,Mengya Sun,Maolin Dong,Ziwei Sun,Dan Luo,Huiyang Bian,Hongqi Dai,Tingting Xu

TEMPO-CNF film modified by two-dimension transition metal MXene has certain antibacterial properties. However, the problem of long-lasting stability greatly restricts the feasibility of long-term use of the composite film. Here, we introduced polyaniline (PANI) as a modifying molecule, which was electrostatically adsorbed on the surface of the MXene nanosheets to prevent its self-stacking and delay its oxidation. The modified MXene could still maintain >85 % stability after 30 days of room temperature storage. The MXene-PANI nanocellulose (MXP/CNF) film was further prepared by combining electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding interactions. Thanks to the synergistic effects of the photothermal conversion and photodynamic of MXene and PANI themselves, as well as the high light-trapping properties of the heterostructures, the photothermal and photodynamic efficiencies of the MXP/CNF film were greatly improved. Under the irradiation of 808 nm near-infrared light at 1.5 W/cm 2 , the MXP/CNF film reached a temperature of 132.9 °C within 20 s. Meanwhile, reactive oxygen species are generated to degrade 55 % of crystalline violet by modified MXene composite film under light irradiation. Compared to 15 % bacterial survival on cellulose film not modified with PANI, S. aureus and E. coli were completely killed on MXP/CNF film under light conditions. The prepared thin film materials exhibit low cytotoxicity, highlighting their potential applications in biomedicine and desalination.

Room-temperature NH3 sensor based on CoFe2O4/PANI composite with porous structure

Zhipeng Wang,Xueting Chang,Junfeng Li,Xiaojie Zhu,Yuliang Zhang,Dongsheng Wang,Yingchang Jiang,Shibin Sun

Development of chemo-resistive room-temperature ammonia (NH 3 ) sensor with high performance remains a great challenge to this day. In this paper, we demonstrate a room-temperature NH 3 sensor based on organic-inorganic cobalt ferrite (CoFe 2 O 4 )/polyaniline (PANI) composite. The CoFe 2 O 4 porous nanosheets were firstly prepared by using a direct precipitation method, and then the PANI were anchored onto the surfaces of the CoFe 2 O 4 porous nanosheets through an in-situ polymerization process to form the CoFe 2 O 4 /PANI composite. The crystal structure, morphology, and surface chemistry of the CoFe 2 O 4 /PANI composite were characterized by combined techniques of X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and spectroscopy. Due to the porous feature of the composite and the formation of p-p heterojunctions between the CoFe 2 O 4 and PANI, the CoFe 2 O 4 /PANI gas sensor exhibited excellent NH 3 -sensing performance with high response (13 to 100 ppm NH 3 ), good selectivity, wide detection range (10–500 ppm), and rapid response/recovery rate (18/31 s to 100 ppm NH 3 ) at room temperature. Additionally, the CoFe 2 O 4 /PANI gas sensor owned outstanding repeatability and long-term stability. This study offered a promising candidate of CoFe 2 O 4 /PANI composite for constructing room-temperature NH 3 sensor.

Multishell hierarchical GCNF/PANI/NiCo-LDH nanofibers film for high-performance supercapacitors

Wenjie Liu,Fen Qiao,Huaqiang Chu

In the domain of supercapacitor investigation, nickel cobalt layered double hydroxides (NiCo-LDH), regarded as a promising battery material, have garnered significant attention. However, the inherent drawbacks of low conductivity and pronounced agglomeration in single-component NiCo-LDH hinder the achievement of satisfactory overall performance. Thus, a key challenge remains in the rational design of multi-component composite materials incorporating NiCo-LDH, carbon materials, and conductive polymers to enhance their electrochemical properties. In this study, we successfully fabricated multishell hierarchical fiber films of GCNF/PANI/NiCo-LDH through simple wet-chemical approach. This novel architecture features graphene-coated electrospun carbon nanofibers (GCNF) serving as a self-supporting carbon framework, polyaniline (PANI) acting as the conductive layer, and NiCo-LDH contributing a high faraday capacity. Utilizing the enhanced cooperative effects between the various components, the enhanced GCNF/PANI/NiCo-LDH electrode exhibits remarkable specific capacity (347.1 mAh g -1 , 2499 F g -1 at 1 A g -1 ) alongside exceptional rate performance (maintaining 56.5 % capacity at 20 A g -1 ). Moreover, when an asymmetric supercapacitor (ACS) is constructed using active carbon (AC) as the cathode and GCNF/PANI/NiCo-LDH as the anode, it demonstrates remarkable energy storage capabilities. Specifically, it achieves an impressive energy density of 43.8 Wh kg -1 , along with a high power density of 937.5 W kg -1 . Additionally, it exhibits exceptional durability, with a capacitance retention of 88.8 % even after 2000 cycles. This study presents a novel approach for designing high-performance core-triple-shelled hierarchical materials in the field of energy storage devices.

Ultrasensitive ammonia sensor with excellent humidity resistance based on PANI/SnS2 heterojunction

Ahua Xu,Shupeng Sun,Xinlei Li,Nan Wang,Xiaoyu Wang,Huajin Tao,Yitian Ma,Zhao Zhang,Baoyu Huang,Xiaogan Li

The analysis of human exhaled gas is crucial for early and noninvasive diagnosis. However, the complex composition and high-humidity of exhaled gas pose significant challenges to the application of gas sensors. This research focuses on the development of a chemiresistive ammonia sensor based on the polyaniline/tin disulfide (PANI/SnS 2 ) heterojunction, which is fabricated by hydrothermal and in-situ polymerization techniques. The sensor demonstrates significantly enhanced gas sensing capabilities manifested by increased responsiveness, improved selectivity, and stability for detecting 0.5–100 ppm ammonia at ambient temperature. Notably, the sensor exhibits a marked enhancement in response at high humidity levels. When exposed to 30 ppm of ammonia, the sensor's response value increases by 167 % at a relative humidity (RH) of 80 %, compared to 128 % at 50 % RH. This significant improvement can be attributed to the unique interaction between water molecules and the sensor material, which enhances the overall charge transfer processes at the PANI/SnS 2 interface. Furthermore, in-situ techniques as well as theoretical calculations are utilized to gain insight into the sensitization mechanism. The proposed PANI/SnS 2 heterojunction sensor shows great promise for applications in high-humidity environment at ambient temperature.

Sahar G. Tawfik,Lamia Abu El Maati,Muneerah Alomar,Latifah bader Al-muhydeb,Waqas Ul Arifeen,Rizwan Ul Hassan,Abhinav Kumar

Environmental deterioration and energy shortages are worldwide issues, necessitating usage of alternative energy ways to reduce usage of fossil fuels. Electrochemical water splitting is an innovative process for creating renewable energy from hydrogen fuel; however, the slow rate of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) limits its effectiveness. Therefore, the development of new catalytic materials exhibiting high activity and durability for OER has emerged as a primary research focus. In the present work, TbMnO₃/PANI hybrid was prepared by hydrothermal technique for OER. The prepared samples were assessed via several approaches to ascertain their physicochemical features. Compared to pure TbMnO₃, the TbMnO₃/PANI catalyst delivered low η (overpotential) of 201 mV at benchmark current density (j) of 10 mA/cm 2 , suggesting improved catalytic efficacy. The TbMnO₃/PANI nanohybrid exhibited a considerably improved ECSA (electrochemically active surface area) of 412.5 cm 2 and notably greater C dl (double-layer capacitance) of 16.5 mF/cm 2 . Moreover, the nanohybrid demonstrated outstanding endurance of 50 h, as assessed through chronoamperometry test. The results suggest that the designed electrocatalyst may substantially enhance OER performance, offering a feasible approach for advancing future renewable energy applications.

Flexible freestanding PANI/MoS2/CNTs ternary films with synergistically enhanced thermoelectric performance

Wei Guo,Xiaofeng Li,Taihua Zhang,Yan An

Flexible freestanding PANI/MoS 2 /CNTs (PMC) composite films were fabricated using a simple drop-casting method. The introduction of metallic 1T-MoS 2 nanosheets significantly increased the Seebeck coefficient ( S ) of the polyaniline (PANI) matrix through its intrinsic high S and the interfacial energy-filtering effect. The incorporation of highly conductive carbon nanotubes (CNTs) constructed an efficient percolated network, which dramatically enhanced carrier mobility and electrical conductivity ( σ ). The optimized PMC2.5 film achieved a peak power factor ( PF ) of 45.12 μW m −1  K −2 at 378 K and a low thermal conductivity ( κ ) of 0.226 W m −1  K −1 at 298 K, leading to a thermoelectric figure of merit ( ZT ) of 0.036. The film exhibited excellent flexibility, retaining over 91% of its initial σ and 98% of its S after 1000 bending cycles. A flexible thermoelectric generator assembled from these films generated stable voltage output under a small temperature gradient, demonstrating the potential of this ternary composite system for wearable energy harvesting applications.

Wearable PANI@CoFe2O4 organohydroges for strain sensing, EMI shielding and thermal insulation

Zhi Lei,Maoxia Lu,Daohai Zhang,Dongju Liu,Yupeng Hu,Anmin Song,Junlei Wang,Wei Gong

With the rapid escalation of electromagnetic pollution and electromagnetic interference, conventional EMI shielding materials can no longer satisfy the integrated requirements of next-generation flexible electronic devices and information terminals for mechanical deformability, wearable adaptability, and real-time signal monitoring. In this work, a multifunctional polyacrylamide/glycerol (PG)/P@CoFe (PAM/Gly/PANI@CoFe2O4) composite organohydrogel sensor with synergistic electromagnetic dissipation was fabricated through a hydrothermal-assisted one-pot strategy. CoFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles were first synthesized via an ethylene glycol-assisted solvothermal route. Subsequently, the surface-active sites of CoFe2O4 were utilized to induce aniline polymerization, yielding conductive-magnetic polyaniline (PANI)@CoFe2O4 composite nanoparticles. Mechanical characterization demonstrated that the resulting organohydrogel exhibited excellent compressive properties, while the incorporation of glycerol effectively suppressed water evaporation and enhanced water-retention capability. Electromagnetic measurements revealed that, at a PANI@CoFe2O4 loading of 4 wt.%, the 4 mm-thick hydrogel achieved an electrical conductivity of 0.55 ± 0.01 S/m and an average electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 50.27 ± 2.51 dB in the X-band. In addition, the hydrogel exhibited excellent thermal iInsulation performance. More importantly, its outstanding adhesion and rapid stimuli-responsive behavior enabled favorable human–machine interactive strain-sensing performance with good compatibility. This work provides an effective strategy for the development of integrated, robust multifunctional materials that simultaneously combine flexible sensing, electromagnetic shielding, and thermal insulation.

MoS2@PANI composite for highly sensitive ammonia gas sensing at room temperature

Zhiyuan Zhu,Chengli Tang,Xiaoming Li,Ming Li,Peng Wang

Reliable gas sensor is obligatory for accurate detection of ammonia gas concentration in many fields. In this paper, a MoS 2 @PANI (polyaniline) composite prepared by a simple in-situ polymerization process of polyaniline on MoS 2 matrix was applied as the ammonia sensing material. Characterizations of SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope), EDS (Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy), XRD (X-ray Diffraction) and BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) were carried out to confirm the information of surface morphology, element, crystallography, and specific surface area of the prepared materials. The MoS 2 @PANI-based sensor showed tunable n-to-p response to ammonia gas depending on the doping content of PANI. The prepared MoS 2 @PANI sensor exhibited a fast response and recovery (16 s/41 s) to 100 ppm of ammonia gas with response value of 4.24 at room temperature. It was demonstrated for satisfying selectivity, repeatability, and stability. Specifically, the XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) in vacuum and in-situ XPS in ammonia atmosphere was carried out and analyzed to investigate intuitive and powerful evidence for the gas sensing mechanism. On one hand, the coordination interactions between the PANI and MoS 2 during the in-situ oxidative polymerization of aniline was demonstrated by formation of Mo-N bond. On the other hand, the existence and function of multiple adsorption sites in the ammonia sensing process was also confirmed. Based on these advantages of the sensor, a portable and visual device by integrating the wireless signal connection, the prepared sensor, and the mobile phone was designed for the real-time monitoring and timely warning of ammonia concentration. The improved sensing performance and probable sensing mechanism elucidated can provide helpful reference for the development of room-temperature responsive ammonia gas sensors.

Three-Dimensional Printed MXene@PANI Hierarchical Architecture for High-Performance Micro-Supercapacitors

Anyi Zhang,Yiming Wang,Haidong Yu,Yabin Zhang

The advent of the Internet of Things has boosted portable and wearable miniature electronics, especially micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) with excellent integrated performance as well as high-power density and a long lifetime. However, the rational design of electrode material formulations and the construction of three-dimensional (3D) structured electrodes with scalable and cost-effective fabrication remains an arduous task for improving the energy density of MSCs to meet all industrial sector requirements, such as the mass-production of microscale structures, a lasting power supply, and safety. To address these challenges, combining the respective capacitance merits of MXenes and polyaniline (PANI), we propose a constructing strategy for the preparation of a 3D MXene@PANI hierarchical architecture consisting of one-dimensional (1D) PANI nanofibers grown on two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2MXene nanosheets via extrusion-based 3D printing. Such a 3D architecture not only achieves a high loading mass of MSC electrodes prior to conventional planar MSCs for abundant active site exposure, but it also overcomes the restacking of MXene nanosheets accounting for sluggish ionic kinetics. These features enable the resulting MSCs to deliver excellent electrochemical properties, including a high volumetric capacitance of 1638.3 mF/cm3and volumetric energy density of 328.2 mWh/cm3. This power supply ability is further demonstrated by lighting up a blue bulb or powering an electronic thermometer. This study provides a promising design strategy of the architecture of MXene@PANI composites for high-performance MSCs with 3D printing technology.

Choline electrochemical biosensor based on MWCNT-AuNPs and MWCNT-PANI composite nanomaterials

Meizheng Li,Mengfei Luo,Jia An,Yufei Liu

Choline levels in the human body are indicative of diseases such as glioma, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease, which is crucial in clinical diagnosis. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a method to detect choline that has potential clinical applications. A novel choline electrochemical biosensor based on choline oxidase was successfully developed, and its performance was significantly improved by modifying the composite of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and gold nanoparticles (MWCNT-AuNPs) and the composite of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and polyaniline (MWCNT-PANI). By combining the time–current method, the concentration of choline was determined based on the magnitude of the oxidation current, enabling trace-level detection of choline. The results showed that the modifying of nanomaterials on the electrode surface can improve both the conductivity and current response of the enzyme electrode. The choline oxidase/composite of multi-walled carbon nanotubes/composite of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and polyaniline and gold nanoparticles (ChOx/MWCNT-AuNPs/MWCNT-PANI) electrode showed a good linear response and a wide linear range to choline in the range of 0.033–133.330 μM. The results of the time–current indicated that our biosensor provided a higher sensitivity of 4.85 nA/μM and a lower detection limit of 0.025 μM (S/N = 3) for choline sensing. Furthermore, the sensor retained 90 % of the initial activity after 50 days. The results exhibited that the novel choline biosensor has the potential to be used for the clinical diagnosis of diseases and prevent disease recurrence, based on detecting the changes of choline level.
