Adsorption of low-concentration arsenic from water by co-modified bentonite with manganese oxides and poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride)

Jinming Hua

Inorgano–organo–bentonite (PMBt) was synthesized through co-modification of bentonite with manganese oxides and poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) (PDMDAAC), and was utilized to remove low-concentration arsenic from water. The hybrid material was characterized by means of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and N 2 adsorption–desorption. It was revealed that the hybrid material possessed an amorphous structure and displayed uneven manganese oxides particles gathering about the bentonite aggregates with a large BET area of 128.90   m 2 /g. The effects of adsorption parameters were investigated, such as stirring time, arsenic concentrations, adsorbent dose, temperature, pH, added anions and ionic strength. The adsorption kinetics and equilibrium of arsenic on the co-modified bentonite were further determined. The results revealed that the adsorption of arsenic was dramatically affected with change in solution pH and significantly suppressed by phosphate anion. The adsorption kinetic data was best fitted with the linear pseudo–second–order model and was well with the non-linear Bangham model. The equilibrium data were well simulated with the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, Freundlich and Redlich–Peterson isotherms by either non-linear or linear regression, respectively. The non-linear Langmuir isotherm showed best fitting and the maximal adsorption capacity was 9.14–9.99   mg/g, dependent on the error function used. It was suggested that the hybrid material had a heterogeneous surface and high affinity towards arsenic, which is highly favorable for arsenic adsorption following a non-ideal monolayer adsorption model. Based on the above comprehensive analysis, the plausible mechanism for arsenic adsorption on PMBt was suggested as a mixed removal mechanism i.e., electrostatic attraction followed by inner-sphere complexation.

Adsorptive removal of Lead from water by the effective and reusable magnetic cellulose nanocomposite beads entrapping activated bentonite

Xiaogang Luo,Xiaojuan Lei,Xiuping Xie,Bo Yu,Ning Cai,Faquan Yu

Many efforts have been driven to decontaminate the drinking water, and the development of efficient adsorbents with the advantages of cost-effectiveness and operating convenience for the removal of Pb 2+ from water is a major challenge. This work was aimed to explore the possibility of using cellulose-based adsorbents for efficient adsorption of Pb 2+ . The millimeter-scale magnetic cellulose-based nanocomposite beads were fabricated via an optimal extrusion dropping technology by blending cellulose with the carboxyl-functionalized magnetite nanoparticles and acid-activated bentonite in NaOH/urea aqueous solution, and then they had been tested to evaluate the effectiveness in the removal of Pb 2+ from water. The effects of contact time, initial heavy metal ion concentrations, adsorption isotherms and solution pH on the sorption behavior were studied. The thermodynamic parameters (Δ G , Δ H and Δ S ) indicated that the adsorption processes were feasible, spontaneous, endothermic and mainly controlled by chemical mechanisms. The reusability of the adsorbent was also studied.

Simultaneous removal of Cr(VI) and Amido black 10B (AB10B) from aqueous solutions using quaternized chitosan coated bentonite

Pan Hu,Jing Wang,Ruihua Huang

In this study, simultaneous removal of Cr(VI) and Amido Black 10B (AB10B) using quaternized chitosan coated bentonite was investigated by a batch method. The factors affecting adsorption process such as pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time and initial concentration and the interaction of two components in binary solutions have been studied. The results showed that the antagonism effect existed between Cr(VI) and AB10B in binary systems. The equilibrium time for Cr(VI) adsorption was less than the one for AB10B adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacities of the modified bentonite, according to the Langmuir isotherm model were 847.5   mg/g for AB10B and 66.6   mg/g for Cr(VI) at 298   K. The experimental results demonstrated that both Cr(VI) and AB10B were well described by the pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic study depicted that the adsorption of Cr(VI) and AB10B onto the modified bentonite was both spontaneous. The adsorption for Cr(VI) was exothermic while the one for AB10B was endoth- ermic in nature.

Synthesis and performance evaluation of thermo-thickening/Nano-SiO2 as a viscosifier for bentonite-free water-based drilling fluids

Hu Deng,Huaizhi Tao,Jiawei Ai,Jindong Chen,Djouonkep Lesly Dasilva Wandji

Recently, conventional viscosifiers exhibit limited effectiveness under deep formations due to their poor salt tolerance and low thermal resistance. To address the limitations, a thermo-responsive macromonomer (DAM) consisting of N,N-diethylacrylamide and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide was copolymerized with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonate and chemically modified nano-silica (N-np) to obtain an effective thermo-thickening/Nano-SiO 2 polymer composite (N-DPAM) via in-situ polymerization under optimal conditions. The molecular structure of N-DPAM was analyzed by FTIR and 1 H NMR, while rheological and rheometric responses under high temperature, salt dosages, and shear resistance were investigated. The rheometric results demonstrated that DPAM exhibits a viscosity increase of 235% from 65 to 160 °C, but rapidly decreased at 180 °C, whereas N-DPAM displayed stabilized thickening responses of 218% above 160 °C due to intercalation and self-assembly of N-np within the polymer matrix as temperature increases. The viscosity retention rate (VRR) at a high shear rate of 1021 s −1 and 200 °C indicated that the solution viscosity of N-DPAM was observed at 55 mPa s, which is 13 times higher compared to DPAM solution at 4 mPa s. From the rheological results, the VRR of N-DPAM fluid observed at 68% was slightly lower than that of HE300 at 73%, a commercially available viscosity additive in a salt-free environment at 200 °C, but three times higher (63%) than HE300 (25%) in the salt-saturated environment (20% NaCl). Additionally, a study of N-DPAM fluid contaminated by shaly soil from Dagang Oilfield demonstrated excellent compatibility with a filtration control agent to control the viscosity and filtration volumes (< 10 mL) at 200 °C. Influence of Ni-coated carbon fiber on tribological and corrosion behavior of the NiCrAl-Bentonite self-lubricating composite coating

Taoyi Shi,Xiufang Cui,Guo Jin,Wei Zheng,Jin Liu,Xin Wen,Kaixuan Zhou

To address the problem that a high-content lubricating phase can decrease the hardness and wear resistance, resulting in the spallation of the coating during the friction process. In this study, spherical composite powders of NiCrAl-Bentonite, NiCrAl-Bentonite doped with 3 wt% carbon fiber (NiCrAl-3CF), and NiCrAl-Bentonite doped with 3 wt% nickel-coated carbon fiber (NiCrAl-3NCF) were fabricated using ball milling and spray granulation. Subsequently, these composite powders were utilized to prepare corresponding coatings on SUS321 substrates. The hardness and wear test indicated that the doping of carbon fiber (C f ) and nickel-coated carbon fiber (Ni@C f ) increased the hardness and diminished the abrasive wear and damage to the grinding ball during the wear test, thereby reducing the Coefficient of Friction (COF). The electrochemical test indicated that the connection and bridging effects of C f and Ni@C f within the coating changed the corrosion direction and prolonged the corrosion path, thereby improving the corrosion resistance. This study clarifies the mechanism of C f and Ni@C f on tribological performance and corrosion resistance of the coating, it holds considerable reference value for their application in thermal spraying lubricating coating.

Modified bentonite-catalyzed oxidation of typical odorous substances in wastewater: comparison of H2O2 and ClO2 systems and mechanism study

Pengkang Zhang,Tao Zhao,Lijuan Ma,Shuang Tian,Meixue Zhang,Changbo Liu,Yaojie Wu,Xiurong Chen

In recent years, industrial emissions and waste treatment have increasingly contributed to organic odour pollution, necessitating efficient degradation technologies for typical odorous substances like dimethyl disulfide, trichloroethylene, and p-xylene. This study innovatively employs acid- and iron-modified bentonite (Fe-H-Bent) as a catalyst to enhance the oxidation performance of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and chlorine dioxide (ClO 2 ) systems, addressing the limitations of low oxidant utilization in conventional methods. By comparing degradation efficiencies, the Fe-H-Bent + ClO 2 system demonstrated superior removal rates (99% for DMDS, 91% for TCE, and 87% for p-xylene under optimal conditions: catalyst-to-oxidant ratio of 1:2, 40 °C, pH = 3), attributed to its enhanced redox potential and catalytic active sites. Mechanistic investigations, combined with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Fukui function calculations, revealed a dual oxidation pathway: hydroxyl radical (·OH)-mediated attack on methyl-adjacent sites of p-xylene and ClO 2 -driven electron transfer reactions on para-methyl positions, forming intermediates like 2,5-dimethylphenol and alkyl radicals. This work highlights the synergy between modified bentonite and ClO 2 , offering a novel, efficient strategy for odorous substance removal in wastewater treatment, with theoretical insights into radical- and electron-transfer co-oxidation mechanisms.

Effect of Sodium Acetate on High-Temperature Gelation Characteristics of Sodium-Modified Calcium-Based Bentonite Water-Based Drilling Fluids

Rui Liu,Yu Zhao,Huan Wang,Wenjun Long,Junge Zhu,Fengshan Zhou

As global oil and gas exploration extends to deep and ultra-deep wells, high bottom-hole temperature is prone to deteriorating the gelation and rheological properties of water-based drilling fluids, which manifests as undesirable thickening or thinning at elevated temperatures. Therefore, the development of high-temperature resistant and stable drilling fluids is crucial for ensuring safe and efficient drilling operations, and the enhancement of high-temperature performance is typically achieved by adding drilling fluid treatment agents. The main objective of this study is to apply sodium acetate (SA) to drilling fluid systems, developing an economical and efficient non-polymer treatment agent with dual functions as a composite sodium-modifier and a rheological regulator. By-product sodium acetate (TRSA) is adopted to provide better cost-effectiveness while maintaining equivalent performance, and its universality across seven types of bentonites is verified. Three grades of sodium acetate were added to the bentonites as either composite sodium-modifiers or rheological regulators. After high-temperature aging, rheological parameters, including mud density, plastic viscosity (PV), yield point (YP), and gel strength, were measured in accordance with standard API methods. The results indicate that adding 2 wt.% TRSA to drilling fluid and subjecting it to hot rolling at 180 °C for 16 h keeps the viscosity at a high shear rate (1022 s−1) nearly unchanged (from 36 mPa·s to 37.5 mPa·s), while increasing the viscosity at a low shear rate (5.11 s−1) from 250 mPa·s to 1400 mPa·s, thereby effectively improving the shear thinning effect of the sodium-modified calcium-based bentonite water-based drilling fluid. Although TRSA increases the filtration loss from 21.8 mL to 30 mL, this can be reduced to 20–25 mL by co-extrusion sodium modification with sodium carbonate or by adding additional TRSA to sodium-modified bentonite. This study provides a novel perspective for significantly improving the gelation characteristics and rheological properties of bentonite suspensions at high temperatures through a special inorganic substance, while realizing resource reuse and cost reduction.

Novel thermo-associating polymer/silica nanocomposite as a temperature-resistant rheology modifier for bentonite-free water-based drilling fluids

Binqiang Xie,Jindong Chen,Jun Chen,Chao Ma,Lin Zhao,Alain Pierre Tchameni

Thermo-associating polymers have emerged as the promising agent to regulate the rheological properties of bentonite-free drilling fluids (BFDF). However, the application of thermo-associating polymers in high temperature drilling was still limited due to its unsatisfactory thermal stability. In this study, the method of combine the advantages of thermo-associating polymers and nanoparticles into an organic/inorganic hybrid system has been used to further enhance the thermal stability of thermo-associating polymers. In detail, the novel thermo-associating polymer/silica nanocomposite (AMS-CGBA) was prepared by in situ polymerization under optimal synthesis conditions. Different techniques (FT-IR, 1 H-NMR, Elemental analysis and TGA) were used to characterize the structure and the thermal stability of AMS-CGBA. Rheological performance of the AMS-CGBA in BFDF was comprehensively studied and compared with that of thermo-associating polymer (CGBA). The TGA results showed that AMS-CGBA had excellent thermal stability probably due to incorporation of amino-grafted nano-silica (AMS) into thermo-associating polymer. Results from rheological tests revealed that AMS-CGBA exhibited much better performance than CGBA in improving the thermal stability of BFDF under high temperature and high salt (HTHS). Especially at the concentration of 1.5 wt% AMS-CGBA, the AMS-CGBA based BFDF showed nearly 16 times higher values of rheological parameters (AV, PV and YP) than that of CGBA-containing fluid after aging at 200 °C. And the dynamic light scattering tests revealed that the stability temperature of AMS-CGBA molecular was higher than 160 °C, while that of the CGBA was lower than 150 °C. Moreover, the AMS-CGBA-containing fluids exhibited a weakened thermo-thickening viscosity over a wide temperature range (80–180 °C), which was favorable for the “flat” rheology characteristic of BFDF. And the thermo-associative mechanism of AMS-CGBA was investigated through differential scanning calorimetry experiments to analyze the rheological stability of AMS-CGBA-containing fluids at high temperatures. The nanocomposite with the characteristic of both thermosensitive polymers and nanoparticles showed potential application in rheological regulation of bentonite-free drilling fluids at high temperatures.

Structural control of PEG-intercalating Na-bentonite and its influence on the properties of castor oil-based polyurethane coating

Shiping Wang,Rui Huang,Kun Ren,Lushen Shen,Xiang Li,Ganchang Lei,Lijuan Shen,Yingying Zhan,Ying Zheng,Lilong Jiang

Although controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) is a safer and more efficient strategy to administer nutrients for plant growth, it is still a daunting task to reduce the cost and improve the degradability of the synthetic resin coatings. In this paper, an inorganic/organic composite coating for urea fertilizer was prepared from a biodegradable castor oil-based polyurethane (PU) filled with the layered Na-bentonite (Na-BT), which was ultrasonically treated by a series of green PEG surfactants . Synergistically influenced by various intercalation ability, cation-hosting ability and hydrophilicity of the PEGs, the porous structures of the modified Na-BT (MBT) fillers were simply tuned by varying the Mn molecular weights of the PEGs, resulting in the adjustable water swelling and mechanical properties of the MBT/PU composites. Moreover, it was confirmed that the water swelling property played a critical role in controlling the early stage of nutrient release, and the mechanical properties were important for the longevity of nutrient release from the CRFs. The best MBT/PU composite supported a CRF with a long-term release of 75 % in 38 days, which was much longer than the one based on pure PU (20 days).

Investigating the role of Na-bentonite colloids in facilitating Sr transport in granite minerals through column experiments and modeling

Xiaoying Zhang,Fangfei Cai,Funing Ma,Paul Reimus,Linlin Qi,Di Lu,Mohamad Reza Soltanian,Zhenxue Dai

Colloids play a crucial role in influencing the mobility of radionuclides in high-level radioactive waste repositories. However, the co-transport behavior of radionuclides and colloids in geological media remains insufficiently understood. This study investigated the transport of Strontium (Sr) in four types of granite minerals (quartz, biotite , K-feldspar, and plagioclase) in the presence and absence of Na-bentonite colloids (Na-BC) using column experiments. Employing a stepwise modeling strategy, this study first determined the basic flow and transport parameters through breakthrough curve analysis of the conservative tracer (Br). Then, the experimental data of Sr in the colloid-free Sr transport experiments and Na-BC in the Sr-colloid co-transport experiments were quantitatively explained using a two-site sorption model and a two kinetic sites model, respectively. Finally, the co-transport behavior of Sr and Na-BC was fitted using the colloid-facilitated solute transport model. The stepwise modeling allowed quantification of the kinetics of Sr sorption onto mobile and immobile Na-BC and highlighted the role of straining in Na-BC retention. In the absence of Na-BC, Sr transport experienced the greatest retardation in biotite, followed by plagioclase, K-feldspar, and quartz, respectively, which positively correlated with the specific surface area of the minerals. Moreover, Na-BC enhanced Sr transport with the same retardation order in all tested minerals, with recovery rate increments of 68.61%, 19.21%, 6.67%, and 4.33%, respectively. The transport of Sr in K-feldspar was found to be less affected by Na-BC compared to the other tested minerals, likely due to the strong cation exchange capacity of K + among the cation components of minerals, making hydrated K + more likely to exchange with Sr 2+ on K-feldspar surfaces. These findings hold significant implications for assessing the risks associated with the transport of radionuclides in deep geological repositories.

Mussel-Inspired Self-Adhesive, Antidrying, and Antifreezing Poly(acrylic acid)/Bentonite/Polydopamine Hybrid Glycerol-Hydrogel and the Sensing Application

Lu Wu,Longwei Li,Meijie Qu,Hai Wang,Yuezhen Bin

Hydrogel has great application prospect in the field of flexible wearable devices; however, its poor antifreezing and antidrying properties hinder its applications in wearable devices. Herein, a self-adhesive glycerol-hydrogel (G-hydrogel) with antifreezing and antidrying properties was prepared successfully. The glycerol and water double-solvent system endowed excellent antifreezing and antidrying properties with hydrogel, which ensured the flexibility of the G-hydrogel even after being frozen for 24 h at −15 °C or stored at room temperature for a long time. Polydopamine (PDA)-intercalated bentonite (BT) incorporated into the G-hydrogel contributed good comprehensive mechanical property to the G-hydrogel. The peeling test results confirmed that G-hydrogel has good adhesion to natural and synthetic materials because of the existence of PDA with catechol structure. Particularly, the G-hydrogel presented marvelous sensing capabilities for strain and pressure and could monitor the movements of a human. In summary, this kind of self-adhesive, antidrying, and antifreezing hybrid G-hydrogel may be a very promising soft material for flexible wearable devices.

Mono-/competitive adsorption of cadmium(II) and lead(II) using straw/bentonite-g-poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) resin

Wang Zhonghua,Zhou Wei,Zhu Liang

We investigated the adsorption of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ using straw/bentonite-g-poly(acrylic acid- co -acrylamide) resin as an adsorbent in single and binary-component systems. The resin was characterized by various analytical techniques. Adsorption experiments were conducted by varying the pH, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration and temperature. Adsorption data for Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ fitted the Langmuir isotherm in the single-component system. Kinetic data for Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic in a single-component system. A maximum adsorption for Cd 2+ occurred at pH 5, whereas for Pb 2+ , the maximum Cd 2+ adsorption occurred at pH 3. The maximum Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ adsorption capacities were 315.1 mg g −1 and 355.5 mg g −1 , respectively. In the binary-component system, the presence of Cd 2+ could improve the adsorption capacity of Pb 2+ and the presence of Pb 2+ could reduce the adsorption capacity of Cd 2+ when the Cd 2+ concentration was high. This study provides realistic and valid data on resin use to remove heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions.
