ENHANCED VISIBLE-LIGHT-DRIVEN PHOTOCATALYTIC DEGRADATION PERFORMANCE OF CIP ON BiVO4–Bi2WO6 NANO-HETEROJUNCTION PHOTOCATALYSTS

SHAOFANG SUN,YAFAN WU,XIAN ZHANG,ZHONGJIE ZHANG,YAN YAN,WEISHENG GUAN

The removal of CIP from the environment has become a mandatory issue. In our paper, we have realized the visible-light-driven degradation of CIP on the BiVO 4 – Bi 2 WO 6 nano-heterojunction photocatalysts. The synthesized photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectra and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. Compared with the single-phase BiVO 4 and Bi 2 WO 6 counterparts, BiVO 4 – Bi 2 WO 6 nano-heterojunction photocatalysts show enhanced photocatalytic degradation activities in visible-light-driven CIP degradation. Particularly, when R ( Bi 2 WO 6 ∕ BiVO 4 ) = 10 wt .%, the products exhibit the highest CIP degradation ratio in 60 min of 76.8% under visible light illumination. The tentative mechanism of the interface charge transfer (IFCT) effect in the BiVO 4 – Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunction structure is also discussed by using the band position calculation.

Enhanced interfacial charge transfer in WO3-Bi2WO6 heterostructures: Toward trace detection of mustard gas simulant

Qiuyue Zheng,Tingting Wang,Xue Ma,Ruibai Ma,Chaobo Huang,Xianfa Zhang,Xiaoli Cheng,Lihua Huo,Zoltán Major,Yingming Xu

Developing reliable and portable sensors for detection of highly toxic mustard gas is extremely important for public security. However, gas sensors based on pristine metal oxide semiconductors often suffer from high working temperature, inferior response, and inadequate detection limit owing to their poor intrinsic conductivity and weak adsorption toward target gases, thereby hindering their wide application. Herein, hierarchical WO 3 -Bi 2 WO 6 heterostructures were fabricated as sensing materials to comprehensively improve their sensing properties to 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (2-CEES, a mustard gas simulant). The optimized sensor based on WO 3 -Bi 2 WO 6 -2 displayed short response time of 1.4 s and high sensing response (R a /R g  = 63) to 50 ppm 2-CEES at 133 °C, together with an ultra-low detection limit of 10 ppb. The improvement of WO 3 -Bi 2 WO 6 -2 in sensing properties are synergistically attributed to the amount of heterojunction and surface adsorption sites, which were proved by DFT calculations and a series of characterizations. This work might pave the way for further developing heterostructure-based sensors for 2-CEES detection with superior sensing properties.

Fabrication of Ag/ZnO/Bi2WO6 photocatalyst for boosting photocatalytic activities of cefuroxime sodium in wastewater

Liu Rui,Zhang Xin,Tan Chong

Environmental-friendly photocatalytic technology is attracting considerable attentions in the filed of antibiotic degradation. In this work, an innovative Ag/ZnO/Bi 2 WO 6 catalyst was fabricated using sol–gel and ultrasonic methods for the degradation cefuroxime sodium in wastewater. The optimized Ag/ZnO/Bi 2 WO 6 photocatalyst demonstrated the a remarkable 77.0% photocatalytic efficiency within 180 min under simulated solar sunlight, with an apparent rate constant of 0.01085 min −1 . This efficiency is notably 6.02 and 1.41 times higher than that of pure ZnO and Ag/ZnO, respectively. The Ag/ZnO/Bi 2 WO 6 photocatalyst achieved a degradation efficiency of up to 72.3% in tap water and polluted river water, while achieving 65.7% degradation in pulping wastewater and pharmaceutical wastewater. Experiments involving reactive species scavenging and electron paramagnetic resonance implied that hydroxide radicals were the predominant active species responsible for the degradation. The enhanced catalytic mechanism and degradation pathway were elucidated, providing valuable insights into the construction and development of high-performance catalysts based on zinc oxide.

Hierarchical MXene (Nb2C, V2C)/Bi2WO6 heterostructure via face-to-face coupling for enhanced pollutant removal

Kang Li,Jiaoqun Zhu,Weibing Zhou,Lilong Sun,Shouqin Tian

To improve the photocatalytic performance of single-phase Bi 2 WO 6 , the heterojunction construction is usually employed to effectively separate and transport photo-induced carriers. Herein, MXene/Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunction (NB2 and VB2) with face-to-face contact and hierarchical structure was constructed by growing ultrafine Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets on the surface of two-dimensional MXene (Nb 2 C and V 2 C) materials. Compared with the original Bi 2 WO 6 , the hybrids exhibited a larger specific surface area (42.17 m 2 ∙g −1 for NB2, 50.15 m 2 ∙g −1 for VB2), and displayed significant enhancements in the photodegradation of anionic MO (13.8-fold, 6.5-fold), cationic RhB (9.1-fold, 4.5-fold), and neutral phenol (8.5-fold, 6.1-fold), respectively. This is mainly attributed to the heterostructures via face-to-face coupling which can facilitate the tuning of the photoresponsive properties and internal energy level structure, as well as the generation of free radicals ( • O 2 - , • OH, and h + ) for the stepwise redox process in photodegradation. Therefore, this work is expected to expand the diverse use of Non-Ti 3 C 2 MXene in photocatalysis, meanwhile provide important guidance for the harmless treatment of organic pollutants.

Polymer-derived porous Bi2WO6/SiC(O) ceramic nanocomposites with high photodegradation efficiency towards Rhodamine B

Yao Feng,Shuyi Lai,Le Yang,Ralf Riedel,Zhaoju Yu

Polymer-derived porous Bi 2 WO 6 /SiC(O) nanocomposites were prepared by a simple mechanical mixing of Bi 2 WO 6 nanopowders with a polyorganocarbosilane, namely allylhydridopolycarbosilane (AHPCS), followed by pyrolysis of the resulting blend at 700 °C for 2 h. The Bi 2 WO 6 nanopowders were synthesized by the reaction between Bi(NO 3 ) 3 ·5H 2 O and Na 2 WO 4 and characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The cross-linking and polymer-to-ceramic transformation of the physically blended Bi 2 WO 6 /AHPCS were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). TEM studies revealed that the final ceramic composite is comprised of Bi 2 WO 6 nanoparticles homogeneously embedded in a polymer-derived SiC(O) matrix. Nitrogen sorption isothermal analysis showed the meso-macroporous feature of resultant Bi 2 WO 6 /SiC(O) nanocomposites. Finally, the porous Bi 2 WO 6 /SiC(O) composites show a high photodegradation efficiency (ca. 90%) towards a model organic dye Rhodamine B (RhB) under UV irradiation. Therefore, the synthesized ceramic composite has to be considered as a promising candidate material for purification of water contaminated with organic dyes.

Enhanced charge transfer over sustainable biochar decorated Bi2WO6 composite photocatalyst for highly efficient water decontamination

Heng Zhou,Rui Zhang,Caiyan Yue,Xu Wu,Qiong Yan,Hao Wang,Heng Zhang,Tianyi Ma

ABSTRACT As a green and efficient technology, photocatalysis has practical application value, especially in terms of remediating environmental contamination issues. Biochar, the carbon material derived from sustainable calcined biomass waste, has attracted attention for its efficient adsorption capacity for pollutants. Herein, nitrogen(N)-doped biochar is prepared from sawdust biomass and dexterously coupled with Bi 2 WO 6 to synthesize a range of Bi 2 WO 6 /N-doped biochar composites (BWO/N x -BC), which are successfully utilized for photodegradation of chlorpyrifos (CPs). After introducing N atoms, BWO/N3-BC improves conductivity of electrons while maintaining strong adsorption properties, effectively preventing the charge recombination. BWO/N3-BC demonstrates high efficiency in ultrafast photodegradation of recalcitrant pesticides, destroying 99.0% of CPs in only 0.5 h. Besides, the degradation rate constants are 2.91 and 12.13 times higher than those of pure BWO and N3-BC, respectively. Given the complexity of real water environments, the effects of different operating parameters on photocatalytic activity are explored. Free radical scavenging assay and electron paramagnetic resonance are employed to uncover the key active species (•O 2 – , •OH, and h + ), with •O 2 – being the predominant contributor, and the synergistic enhancement mechanism of adsorption-photodegradation of BWO/N3-BC is successfully revealed. Also, the intermediates of CPs are identified by HPLC-MS, and three possible degradation pathways are proposed. In addition, the ecotoxicity of CPs and their intermediates are evaluated by ecotoxicity test ( E. coli culture) and Toxicity Evaluation Software Tool. This work may provide an opening for environmental remediation via photocatalysis integrated with waste biomass high-value valorization.

Three-dimensional flower-like Bi2WO6/KCC-1 microspheres for enhancing photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B

Zhixian Du,Yuan Gao,Zhuanzhuan Liang,Yanqing Yang,Weike Zhang

In this work, the Bi 2 WO 6 /KCC-1 photocatalytic composite was prepared by hydrothermal method using Bi 2 WO 6 as photocatalyst and KCC-1 as cocatalyst, for degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). The result shows that when the mass percentage of KCC-1 in the composite is 7 % (BK-3), the photocatalytic degradation efficiency is the highest, reaching 90.63 %. Furthermore, the BK-3 composite shows a well degradation activity (83.90 %) even after four consecutive cycles of photocatalysis. Characterization of the photocatalyst by various testing techniques show that the BK-3 composite presents high visible light response, narrow energy band, and strong separation of photogenerated carriers. The results of free radical capture experiments indicate that the main active substance in the degradation of RhB under visible light is h + and ·O 2 − also plays a certain auxiliary role. This study offers promising prospects for the preparation of highly efficient photocatalysts through the modification of bismuth-based materials.

Grafting Sulfonated Triptycene-Based Hypercrosslinked Polymers onto Bi2WO6 for Enhanced Adsorption and Photoelimination of Antibiotics

Yingxue Zhang,Wanjun Xu,Xiao Yang,Shihong Dong,Najun Li,Qingfeng Xu,Hua Li,Jianmei Lu,Dongyun Chen

Antibiotics, as an emerging pollutant due to their extensive use and difficulty in biodegradation, can cause harm to health through bioaccumulation. To address this, various photocatalysts have been developed for rapid antibiotic removal. However, their low concentrations limit mass transfer efficiency, resulting in suboptimal performance. Adsorption is crucial for enhancing photocatalytic efficiency. In this study, a series of binary heterojunction catalysts (x% BWO@STHP) were synthesized, consisting of Bi 2 WO 6 (BWO) grafted with sulfonated triptycene-based hypercrosslinked polymer (STHP). The high specific surface area of STHP, combined with π-π conjugation and ionic interactions with antibiotics, significantly enhances adsorption capacity. This facilitates effective contact between low-concentration pollutants in aqueous solutions and the active sites of the catalyst. The formation of a Z-scheme heterojunction between BWO and STHP facilitates photogenerated charge separation, and further significantly improves photocatalytic degradation performance. Specifically, the 20% BWO@STHP catalyst achieved rapid adsorption equilibrium for oxytetracycline (OTC), doxycycline (DOX), and tetracycline (TC) within 2 min and completely degraded them after 15 min of irradiation, compared to pristine BWO, the photocatalytic reaction rate constants are significantly increased, being 9.69 times higher for OTC and 13.45 times higher for DOX. The catalyst exhibits excellent reusability and holds promising potential for practical applications.

Defect-mediated electron/hole trapping in Bi2WO6 for concurrent Cr(VI) decontamination and ciprofloxacin mineralization

Dayu Sun,Dongdong Chu,Mingkai Xu,Chao Xing,Lan Ling

The remediation of multicomponent wastewater containing high-valent heavy metals and organic pollutants remains a significant environmental challenge. Visible-light-driven photocatalysis holds promise for concurrent pollutants decontamination, but is often hindered by sluggish interfacial charge transfer, rapid electron-hole recombination, and inadequate redox-active carriers. In this work, we present a dual-vacancy-incorporated Bi 2 WO 6 ( V -BWO) photocatalyst, featuring strategically introduced oxygen vacancies (OVs) and bismuth vacancies (BiVs), to overcome these constraints. Integrated theoretical and experimental investigations uncover a defect-mediated charge dynamics mechanism: OVs function as shallow electron traps enabling ultrafast charge capture, while BiVs function as deep relaxation sites that—under Cr(VI)-induced electron quenching—synergistically stabilize holes and extend their lifetime. This synergistic vacancy modulation achieves exceptional performance: a ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation rate constant of 3.3 × 10 −2 min −1 with concurrent Cr(VI)-to-Cr(III) conversion (0.036 mmol/L reduced after 60 min). Notably, the catalyst sustains robust > 80.6 % contaminant removal efficiency in continuous-flow operation across diverse pollutants including CIP, bisphenol A (BPA), and rhodamine B (RhB). These findings elucidate the pivotal role of dual-defect states in tuning carrier dynamics and establishes a robust platform for integrated photocatalytic detoxification of multicomponent wastewater streams.

Effects of Er3+ doping on the crystal morphology and gamma rays shielding properties of Bi2WO6

Yixiang Liao,Chuyuan Mao,Jinfan Zhang,Guowei Wang,Guoqing Liu,Qiang Yan,Zhengxin Wu,Yong Liu

In this study, erbium (Er)-doped bismuth tungstate (Bi 2 WO 6 ) polycrystalline materials were synthesized using a hydrothermal method. The synthesized products were then systematically characterized through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses. Moreover, the shielding performance of Er-doped Bi 2 WO 6 against gamma rays was investigated by analyzing its linear attenuation coefficient (LAC), mass attenuation coefficient (MAC), half-value layer (HVL), and tenth-value layer (TVL). The results indicated that Er 3+ ions were successfully incorporated into the crystal lattice of Bi 2 WO 6 without altering its crystal structure. Moreover, as the Er 3+ doping ratio increased, the morphology of Bi 2 WO 6 evolved from a lamellar stacking structure to a more densely clustered flower-like spherical structure. The shielding performance of Bi 2 WO 6 against 59.5-keV gamma rays was significantly enhanced by Er 3+ doping. When the Er 3+ concentration was 12.5 mol%, the LAC, MAC, HVL, and TVL values were 35.66 cm −1 , 12.6 cm 2 /g, 0.019 cm, and 0.065 cm, respectively. For the attenuation of high-energy gamma rays (661.6, 1173, and 1332 keV), an increase in the Er 3+ content resulted in a slow increase in the LAC, small decreases in the HVL and TVL, and almost no change in the MAC.

The BiOBr/Bi2WO6/2K-g-C3N4 tri-heterojunction photocatalyst efficiently catalyzes the degradation of gaseous formaldehyde

Yuxin Ma,Xue Zhan,Yiqing Han,Wenjie Cui,Xue Ye,Jie Li

The photocatalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO) to CO 2 and H 2 O is a key method for the green degradation of gaseous HCHO. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) is widely studied for its stability, non-toxicity, and low cost, but its small specific surface area often leads to electron-hole recombination, limiting its photocatalytic efficiency. This study addresses this by preparing K-doped g-C 3 N 4 via thermal polymerization and synthesising a flower-like spherical BiOBr/Bi 2 WO 6 /2K-g-C 3 N 4 ternary heterojunction catalyst using hydrothermal and hydrolytic precipitation methods. The catalyst demonstrated a 96.00 % photocatalytic degradation efficiency for gaseous HCHO within 5 h, reaching 90.67 % at just 2 h, highlighting its superior charge separation capability. Characterization revealed that the flower-like morphology enhances light absorption by exposing more active sites, while the K-doped g-C 3 N 4 forms a double Z-scheme heterojunction with BiOBr/Bi 2 WO 6 , effectively separating and retaining photogenerated electrons and holes. This structure significantly boosts the catalyst's redox capacity, thereby improving its photocatalytic performance for HCHO degradation.

One step solvothermal synthesis of Bi/BiPO4/Bi2WO6 heterostructure with oxygen vacancies for enhanced photocatalytic performance

Fan Yang,Ximiao Zhu,Jianzhang Fang,Dongdong Chen,Weihua Feng,Zhanqiang Fang

In this work, a plasmonic metallic Bi deposited BiPO 4 /BiWO 6 heterostructure with surface oxygen vacancies was synthesized through one-step solvothermal method. The successful synthesis of material was confirmed by a series of characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV–vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, transmission electron microscope , photoluminescence spectroscopy. The characterization results showed that the surface oxygen vacancies were concentrated on the surface of BiPO 4 . The photocatalytic activity of Bi/BiPO 4 /Bi 2 WO 6 was evaluated by photocatalytic decomposition of methylene blue and 2,4-Dichlorophenol under simulated sunlight irradiation. Meanwhile, with the addition of hydrogen peroxide , the photocatalytic efficiency would be further improved. The presence of rich surface oxygen vacancies and photo-induced electron were beneficial to produce hydroxyl radicals. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of Bi/BiPO 4 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterostructure was ascribed to high separation efficiency of photo-generated electron–hole pairs, which aroused by the synergistic effects of heterojunction among different components, surface plasmonic resonance effect of Bi, and the surface oxygen vacancies.
