Silicon oxide (SiOx) is becoming a hot spot in the research of anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. However, the low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE), weak conductivity, unsatisfied rate performance, and significant volume changes during cycling of SiOx have hindered its commercial application. Herein, a silicon–carbon composite material (SiOx/C–Sn@NC) was synthesized, featuring metal tin that is embedded within and on the surface of the SiOx framework. Additionally, a nitrogen-doped carbon layer was incorporated into the material to further mitigate volume changes. Benefitted from the discrepant lithiation/delithiation potentials of Sn and Si, the formed structure significantly limits the volume changes of the formed anode during the cycle, enhancing the cycle life and stability of the SiOx/C–Sn@NC material. Additionally, multiple nodes are provided in the part where the bridged Sn is in contact with the N-doped carbon to enhance the Li+ diffusion during charge and discharge and overall conductivity, promoting the lithium-ion diffusion kinetics. The SiOx/C–Sn@NC anode displays an ICE of 73.42% at 0.5 A g–1, retaining a capacity of 680 mAh g–1 after 500 cycles. In addition, this anode also exhibits excellent cycle performance of 591 mAh g–1 after 500 cycles, with an ICE of 70.37% at a current of 2 A g–1. The prominent cycle performance and electrochemical stability of SiOx/C–Sn@NC far surpass those of commercial silicon–carbon and graphite, offering a new pathway for the commercial application of silicon oxide-based anodes.

The extremely large volume variation and poor electronic conductivity of Si anode materials for lithium ion batteries have seriously hampered their performances and practical applications. SiOx materials are regarded as ideal alternatives to high-capacity Si anode materials for Li-ion batteries, since the generated Li2O matrix from Li–SiOx reactions can effectively accommodate the large volume swing of Si. Furthermore, micron-sized particles with much smaller surface area always present higher initial coulombic efficiency and tap density than nanomaterials. Based on the above considerations, SiOx microparticles with homogeneously-embedded Si nanocrystals and nanopores were fabricated by magnesiothermic reduction in this work and were further modified by high-electronic-conductivity and flexible polyaniline (PANI)–Ag shell. Profiting from these favorable features, the obtained SiOx–PANI–Ag micron-composites exhibited better cycling performances (with a reversible capacity of 1149 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles), good initial coulombic efficiency and tap density in comparison with SiOx-based materials in other works. This study promotes us to exploit advanced Si- or Sn-based materials for Li ion batteries and preparing micro/nano complex structures for promising applications.

Silicon monoxide (SiO x , 0 < x < 2) is a promising next-generation anode for lithium-ion batteries owing to its high theoretical capacity and the in situ formation of buffering Li 2 O and lithium silicate matrices that mitigate volume expansion. However, conventional high-temperature carbonization promotes excessive disproportionation of SiO x into electrochemically active Si and inert SiO 2 , which simultaneously coarsens nano-Si grains and consumes the active phase, leading to capacity loss and structural deterioration. Here, a confined-disproportionation strategy combining short-duration low-temperature carbonization (600 °C, 5 min) with subsequent high-energy ball milling is reported. The brief thermal step rapidly carbonizes the pitch coating while preserving an amorphous SiO x framework, and the milling step disperses the SiO@C particles into a graphite scaffold and triggers a localized, in situ disproportionation that introduces a controlled fraction of crystalline Si. The resulting SiO@C–graphite composite delivers a reversible capacity of 573 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 0.5C and 494 mAh g −1 at 1 C (capacity retentions of 95.5% and 94.8%, respectively) at 25 °C, and retains 748 and 786 mAh g −1 after 150 cycles at 45 and 60 °C. In situ XRD and quantitative kinetic analysis reveal that lithium storage proceeds through a reversible amorphous evolution of SiO x coupled with staged graphite intercalation, with surface-controlled pseudocapacitance contributing up to ∼90% of the capacity at 1.0 mV s −1 . This work demonstrates that decoupling thermal carbonization from disproportionation through a thermal–mechanical sequential design provides a generalizable route to balance amorphous robustness and crystalline activity in SiO x -based anodes.

Here, we report a simple and efficient hydrothermal approach to fabricate microspheres of the SiOx@SnO2@C ternary composite. Since lithiated SnO2 can significantly enhance the electrical conductivity of Si, SnO2 coating was constructed by growing SnO2 derived from hydrolyzed Na2SnO3in situ on the surface of nano silicon. Meanwhile, in the hydrolysis process of Na2SnO3, high amounts of OH− was generated, etching part of Si in SiO32−, which ultimately transformed to SiOx after the addition of citric acid. Compared with Si, the change in the volume of SiOx during the lithiation/delithiation process was smaller. After a simple hydrothermal treatment and subsequent carbonization, both SnO2 and SiOx nanoparticles were assembled into microspheres through Ostwald ripening. Thereby, the microspherical structure of the SiOx@SnO2@C ternary composite was formed, and the Si cores were uniformly embedded in the carbon layer containing SiOx and SnO2 with the carbon layer. Such a unique architecture that combines SiOx, SnO2 and amorphous carbon imparted great electrochemical properties. As a consequence, the SiOx@SnO2@C composite exhibited a reversible capacity of 796 mA h g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1 even after 300 deep cycles, as well as a rate capacity of 515 mA h g−1 at a high current density of 4 A g−1.

Silicon oxides (SiOx) are one of the most promising anode materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries owing to their abundant reserve and low lost and high reversible capacity. However, the practical application of SiOx is still hindered by their intrinsically low conductivity and huge volume change. In this regard, we design a novel anode material in which sheet-like SiOx nanosheets are encapsulated in a unique point-to-plane conductive network composed of graphene flakes and nitrogen-doped carbon spheres. This unique composite structure demonstrates high specific capacity (867.7 mAh g–1 at 0.1 A g–1), superior rate performance, and stable cycle life. The electrode delivers a superior reversible discharge capacity of 595.8 mAh g–1 after 200 cycles at 1.0 A g–1 and 287.5 mAh g–1 after 500 cycles at 5.0 A g–1. This work may shed light on the rational design of SiOx-based anode materials for next-generation high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

SiO x material has become one of the most promising anode materials to develop high-energy Li-ion batteries (LIBs) beyond 300 Wh kg −1 . However, the practical application is usually limited by poor cycling stability due to the serious volume change of SiO x anode during lithiation/delithiation, which is difficult to overcome by the traditional carbon coating method. Herein, we construct a three-dimensional bifunctional conductive network (3D-SiO x @CNTs/C) composite by in-situ chemical vapor deposition under relatively low-temperature pyrolysis conditions. Benefiting from a mechanically flexible buffer generated from the CNTs coating layer, the 3D-SiO x @CNTs/C electrode exhibits a higher lithium storage capacity retention of about 99.8% (807.2 mAh g −1 ) after 450 cycles at 2 A g −1 than that of conventional carbon-coated strategy. The bifunctional three-dimensional conductive network offers a smooth conduction path to counter the volumetric strain through the demonstration of kinetic and impedance analyses. This work may provide an ingenious strategy to prepare CNTs-modified functional materials and helps to accelerate the application of high-capacity SiO x /C anode in practical batteries.

Silicon (Si) is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to its very high lithium storage capacity; however, fragmentation of Si caused by drastic volume change during lithium insertion and extraction leads to serious capacity decay during cycling. In this work, we report a novel method to synthesize an in situ nanocomposite containing Si nanoparticles evenly embedded in an electrically conductive SiOx@C network (Si/SiOx@C) from one single polysiloxane precursor. In our process, Si nanocrystals were reduced from the polysiloxane precursor using a low temperature molten salt reduction method, and carbon segregated out in the SiOx@C phase which evolved during the subsequent pyrolysis. As an anode material for LIBs, the Si/SiOx@C nanocomposite showed a specific capacity up to 1292 mA h g−1 at a current density of 0.4 A g−1 and 81.84% capacity retention after 200 cycles. The high capacity and stable performance of Si/SiOx@C as an anode material can be attributed to the continuous SiOx@C matrix which provides reliable mechanical support, electronic and ionic conductivity, and a stable solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI). This work demonstrated the viability of deriving a homogenous nanocomposite from a single polymeric precursor, which creates a promising anode material for next-generation LIBs.

To enhance electrochemical properties of C/SiO x composite for business application, N-doped carbon/SiO x composite has been successfully fabricated using rice husks as the raw material of both C and Si sources and urea as N source via an environmentally friendly and economically viable strategy. The obtained N@C/SiO x composite exhibits a porous irregular particle morphology with a high specific surface area. SiO x particles are uniformly dispersed in N-doped C skeleton. As an anode material for Li-ion batteries, the porous structure, N doping and high reduction degree of SiO 2 endow N@C/SiO x electrodes with an outstanding reversible capacity up to 1018.5 mAh/g at 0.1 A/g and a remarkable initial coulombic efficiency of 72.2%, which is larger than that of carbonized rice husks (45.7%). Even if the current density rises to 1.0 A/g, the reversible specific capacity can maintain at 623.3 mAh/g with a capacity degradation of merely 4.0% after 1000 cycles.

Li-ion batteries (LIBs) with micron-sized silicon monoxide (SiO x ) anodes are promising, ascribed to their favorable cost affordability and remarkable theoretical capacity, while the huge volume expansion and inferior Li + /e − conductivity of SiO x have severely restricted their further development. Herein, a micron-sized SiO x @carbon nanotube (CNT)/polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) composite capsule is designed for advanced LIB anode via a novel Pickering emulsion template method. The volume variation of SiO x during (de)lithiation reactions is alleviated by the reserved space inside capsules, and the capsule shells of PMMA/CNT engage a significant Li + /e − conductivity as well. Besides, the activity of SiO x greatly remains due to the capsule protection and avoidance of high-temperature treatment. The experimental results indicate that the SiO x @CNT/PMMA composite anodes can present improved lithium storage abilities in aspects of capacity retention, rate performance, and coulombic efficiency. This proposed method hopes to provide a novel micron-scale structure design for Si-based anodes in LIBs.
