The emergence of distributed micro-power systems demands sustainable and high-performance triboelectric materials. Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) offer a promising platform with structurally tunable polarity; their practical application in triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) is hindered by poor processability and the difficulty in forming effective triboelectric interfaces. This work reports a composite aerogel designed to bridge this gap by synergistically integrating the versatile halogen-anion HOF (HA-HOF) with the structural advantages of lignocellulosic matrix derived from alkaline peroxide mechanical pulp (APMP). The robust, naturally derived 3D network acts as an ideal scaffold, hosting HA-HOF and creating a “bridge structure” that builds an electron transfer “highway” within the material, thereby significantly facilitating charge separation and transfer during friction. Simultaneously, the introduction of strong electron-withdrawing groups (bromine and fluorine functional groups) into HA-HOF@APMP aerogel (HA-HOF@APMPA) has effectively enhanced the negative friction polarity and endowed it with excellent versatility, including fluorescence, hydrophobicity, and flame retardancy. The resulting HA-HOF@APMPA-based TENG (HAA-TENG) can generate an open-circuit voltage of 158 V, short-circuit current of 2.8 µA, and transfer charge of 54 nC, representing enhancements of 172%, 103%, and 135%, respectively, over the pristine APMPA-based TENG. The HAA-TENG sensor is successfully employed for monitoring human joint motion and gait patterns.

Intelligent wearable devices based on laser-induced graphene (LIG) have attracted significant attention for human health monitoring. This paper proposed an innovative all-in-one design for preparing a self-powered smart insole using laser-induced MXene-composited graphene hybrid (LIG@MXene) from lignocellulose precursor. By incorporating MXene into the LIG, the composite achieved improved crystallinity and reduced defects, contributing to the electrical conductivity (17.2 Ω∙sq −1 ) and structural stability. The optimal laser processing parameters are 55% for laser power and 70 mm s −1 for etching rate. The optimized LIG@MXene composite functions as a versatile platform for integrating triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) with a high output power of 35 V cm −2 , supercapacitor with a superior areal capacitance of 71.4 mF cm −2 and the excellent cycling stability of 89.5% retention, Joule heater of the maximum heating temperature of 113 °C at 5 V, and various flexible sensors for pressure, humidity and sweat composition with high sensitivity and linearity. In particular, the minimum L-tyrosine limit of detection in sweat is only 9.60 µM. These functional modules are embedded within an insole via a direct laser writing technology, which only emitted 9.10 kg CO 2 eq during manufacturing. The direct laser-patterned synthesis of LIG@MXene composite represents a significant step forward in advancing smart wearable electronic devices.

Cyclic chiral lactide is the monomer chemical for polymerization of high molecular weight polylactic acid (PLA). The synthesis of cyclic l -lactide starts from poly-condensation of l -lactic acid to a low molecular weight prepolymer and then depolymerized to cyclic l -lactide. Lignocellulose biomass is the most promising carbohydrate feedstock for lactic acid production, but the synthesis of cyclic l -lactide from l -lactic acid produced from lignocellulose has so far not been successful. The major barriers are the impurities of residual sugars and inhibitors in the crude cellulosic l -lactic acid product. Here we show a successful cyclic l -lactide synthesis from cellulosic l -lactic acid by lignocellulose biorefining with complete inhibitor removal and coordinated sugars assimilation. The removal of inhibitors from lignocellulose pretreatment was accomplished by biodetoxification using a unique fungus Amorphotheca resinae ZN1. The nonglucose sugars were completely and simultaneously assimilated at the same rate with glucose by the engineered l -lactic acid bacterium Pediococcus acidilactici . The l -lactic acid production from wheat straw was comparable to that from corn starch with high optical pure (99.6%), high l -lactic acid titer (129.4 g/L), minor residual total sugars (~2.2 g/L), and inhibitors free. The cyclic l -lactide was successfully synthesized from the regularly purified l -lactic acid and verified by detailed characterizations. This study paves the technical foundation of carbon-neutral production of biodegradable PLA from lignocellulose biomass.

Oxidative catalytic fractionation (OCF) under the lignin-first strategy has emerged as a critical technological approach for biomass refining. To address the inevitable carbohydrate degradation and lignin condensation in conventional OCF, this study designed a cobalt-doped layered double hydroxide oxide (Co-LDO) catalyst compatible with non-alkaline (without Brønsted bases) organic systems, which exhibits excellent performance in poplar biomass OCF. With a straightforward preparation process, the Co-LDO catalyst yields high-content oxidized lignin oligomers while efficiently retaining carbohydrates, providing feedstock rich in carbohydrates (cellulose and hemicellulose) for the subsequent production of bioenergy and biomass-based chemicals. Under optimized conditions screened via systematic reaction condition investigation and metal-doped LDO catalyst evaluation, the process achieved a 94.01 wt% delignification rate, with 72.19 wt% of lignin converted into lignin oligomer oil, supported by detailed product composition and structural characterization. Meanwhile, 74.14 wt% hemicellulose and 98.23 wt% cellulose were recovered in solid residues, with structurally intact hemicellulose retention being 2.3 times higher than in traditional OCF. Mass balance calculation confirmed a total poplar refining yield of 81.58 wt%. In summary, this Co-LDO-catalyzed OCF strategy provides a high-activity non-precious metal system, effectively suppressing lignin condensation while preserving high-yield carbohydrates, realizing the efficient full-component refining of poplar biomass.

The highly efficient extraction of cellulose from lignocellulose with an excellent yield of 95.2 % and purity of 96.7 % was demonstrated using acid-catalyzed fractionation with aqueous butanediol . This cellulose was subsequently transformed into cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with specific dimensions and surface functional groups through various chemomechanical treatments. The average diameters of CNFs and CNCs produced by sulfuric acid hydrolysis-ultrasonication and deep eutectic solvent treatment-ultrasonication (DES-CNCs) were 29.7, 21.9 and 17.3 nm, respectively. The DES-CNCs were obtained in a good yield of 71 ± 1.27 wt% and exhibited a high zeta potential of −33.5 ± 2.51 mV following posthydrolysis and esterification during the DES treatment. These CNFs and CNCs were used as nanofillers in a waterborne wood coating (WWC), which significantly improved its dynamic viscosity and storage modulus . The addition of these materials also enhanced the mechanical strength of the WWC but had little effect on transmittance . Glossiness, hardness, abrasion resistance and adhesion strength were evaluated, and the DES-CNCs provided the greatest improvements at a low concentration. A plausible reinforcement mechanism was presented. This work provided an efficient cellulose extraction method and detailed structure elucidation of the nanocellulose together with suggestions for value-added applications of cellulosic nanofillers for reinforcing WWC.

Hydrogenation reduction of furfural (FAL) to furfuryl alcohol (FOL) confirms the requirement of sustainable development of society. The key to realize this transformation is to design a cost-effective and environmental catalyst with both Lewis acid and Lewis base sites. Here, we report the preparation of a multifunctional zirconium-based hybrid (Zr@PS-MSA) using Pennisetum sinese (PS), an annual natural lignocellulose, as a natural organic ligand. The prepared hybrid was used as an efficient catalyst for catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of FAL to FOL in isopropanol, and a high yield of up to 99.6% was accomplished by manipulating exposed versatile acid–base sites. Further studies indicated that Zr@PS-MSA possessed remarkable cycle stability and could be consecutively run at least 6 times without significant change in the catalytic activity. Mechanistic studies for CTH of FAL to FOL through isotopically labeled 2-propanol-d8 experiments evidently demonstrate FAL reduction via intermolecular hydrogen transfer. More gratifyingly, Zr@PS-MSA can also efficiently catalyze the various biomass-derived carboxides to corresponding alcohols, with yields of up to 92.4%.

The pollution of heavy metals to aquatic ecosystem is getting more and more attention. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a low-cost, high-efficient, high-selective and environmental adsorbing material that can simultaneously indicate and adsorb heavy metal ions . Cellulose-based aerogel has attracted much attention due to its strong adsorption capacity, good biodegradability and cost performance. In this paper, cellulose nanofiber/chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol/lactam Rhodamine 6 G composite aerogel (CNF/CS/PVA/SRh6G) was prepared by freeze-drying technology with CNF/CS hybrid aerogel as adsorbent skeleton, SRh6G as fluorescent probe and PVA/glutaraldehyde (GA) as crosslinking agent. When the volume ratio of CNF suspension to CS solution was 10:1, as-prepared composite aerogel had a lower density (145.92 mg/cm 3 ) and a higher specific surface area (0.04293 cm 3 /g). It also exhibited excellent superhydrophilicity and superoleophobicity underwater (OCA-159°), the underwater OCA of which always kept larger than 150° in the surroundings with pH of 1–14. Therefore, CNF/CS/PVA/SRh6G composite aerogel owned good acid and base resistance, which could be applied to rapid adsorption and real-time detection of metal ions (Hg 2+ , Ag + , Al 3+ , Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ ) in wastewater. CNF/CS/PVA/SRh6G composite aerogel could display obvious color and fluorescence variations under sunlight and ultraviolet light, and present the good reversibility after regeneration via base solution (pH=14). Under water, such CNF/CS/PVA/SRh6G composite aerogel showed a good compression elasticity with the maximum pressure of 26.2 N. After five cycles, the adsorption of composite aerogel still could reach up to 19 times of its own weight. Results also showed that it had remarkable durability and structural stability, indicating its broad application prospects in the field of wastewater treatment .

Bioenergy crops provide enormous renewable biomass resources convertible for biofuel production, but lignocellulose recalcitrance fundamentally determines its enzymatic saccharification at high cost and low efficiency. In this study, total 30 diverse Miscanthus lignocellulose substrates were incubated with T. reesei strain to secret lignocellulose-degradation enzymes, and their major wall polymers features (cellulose crystallinity , hemicellulose arabinose and lignin H-monomer) were meanwhile examined with distinct impacts on the enzyme activities . Using characteristic Miscanthus (Msi62) de-lignin residue as inducing substrate with the reesei strain, this study detected that the Msi62-induced enzymes were of consistently higher enhancements on enzymatic saccharification of various lignocellulose residues examined in 17 grassy and woody bioenergy crops, particularly for the hemicellulose hydrolyses , compared to other two reesei -secreted cellulases and three commercial enzymes. Notably, based on SDS-gel protein separation profiling and LC-MS/MS analysis, the Msi62-induced enzymes consist of distinct cellulases (CBHI, BG, EGII) compositions and high-activity xylanases. Therefore, this study has demonstrated an applicable approach to achieve the optimal cellulases and xylanases cocktails that enable for low-costly and high-efficient enzymatic saccharification of diverse lignocellulose sources, providing a potential strategy for large-scale biofuel production in all major bioenergy crops.

Background Due to biomass recalcitrance, including complexity of lignocellulosic matrix, crystallinity of cellulose, and inhibition of lignin, the bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass is difficult and inefficient. The aim of this study is to investigate an effective and green pretreatment method for overcoming biomass recalcitrance of lignocellulose. Results An effective mechanical activation (MA) + metal salt (MAMS) technology was applied to pretreat sugarcane bagasse (SCB), a typical kind of lignocellulosic biomass, in a stirring ball mill. Chlorides and nitrates of Al and Fe showed better synergistic effect with MA, especially AlCl3, ascribing to the interaction between metal salt and oxygen-containing groups induced by MA. Comparative studies showed that MAMS pretreatment effectively changed the recalcitrant structural characteristics of lignocellulosic matrix and reduced the inhibitory action of lignin on enzymatic conversion of SCB. The increase in hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of lignin induced by MAMS pretreatment led to the increase of its hydrophilicity, which could weaken the binding force between cellulase and lignin and reduce the nonproductive binding of cellulase enzymes to lignin. Conclusion sMAMS pretreatment significantly enhanced the enzymatic digestibility of polysaccharides substrate by overcoming biomass recalcitrance without the removal of lignin from enzymatic hydrolysis system.

In this study, total ten Miscanthus accessions exhibited diverse cell wall compositions, leading to largely varied hexoses yields at 17%–40% (% cellulose) released from direct enzymatic hydrolysis of steam-exploded (SE) residues. Further supplied with 2% Tween-80 into the enzymatic digestion, the Mis7 accession showed the higher hexose yield by 14.8-fold than that of raw material, whereas the Mis10 had the highest hexoses yield at 77% among ten Miscanthus accessions. Significantly, this study identified four wall polymer features that negatively affect biomass saccharification as p < 0.05 or 0.01 in the SE residues, including cellulose DP, Xyl and Ara of hemicellulose, and S-monomer of lignin. Based on Simons’ stain, the SE porosity (defined by DY/DB) was examined to be the unique positive factor on biomass enzymatic digestion. Hence, this study provides the potential strategy to enhance biomass saccharification using optimal biomass process technology and related genetic breeding in Miscanthus and beyond.

Pretreatment is critical to promote enzymatic hydrolysis for the production of lignocellulose-based biofuels. In this study, inspired by the lignin degradation through the mouthpart and symbiotic fungi of termite, a synergistic biomass pretreatment system using ball milling and Fenton-like reactions was first proposed. Ball milling can reduce the particle size, while Fenton-like reactions can modify the lignin and cause pore structures, leading to a 44.2% increment in total pore volume. In addition, lignin-based aromatic aldehydes can be produced with a 67.1% increase in yield over no-ball milling conditions, which can be used as natural mediators. More importantly, under the optimal pretreatment conditions (1.5% H2O2, 1 mg L–1 Fe-TAML catalyst, 300 rpm, and 12 h), the highest initial glucose productivity was 2.83 g L–1 h–1, which is 2.4 times higher than untreated samples. The conversion of cellulose in 24 h is enhanced by 62.3% with half of the enzyme input when compared with untreated wheat straw. Thus, the synergy of ball milling and Fenton-like reactions helps to promote lignin depolymerization and enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulose.

The mechanical flexibility and high conductivity of hydrogel electrolytes are crucial for their application in supercapacitors. In this study, we developed hydrogel electrolyte based on lignocellulose nanofibers (LCNFs) through nanofibrillation and self-catalytic gelation in a glycerinum/choline chloride/aluminum chloride hexahydrate (Gly/ChCl/AlCl 3 ·6H 2 O) metal-based neutral deep eutectic solvent (DES) system. The lignin-Al 3+ self-catalytic mechanism offered an eco-friendly and sustainable method for synthesizing hydrogel electrolytes, while enhancing their ionic conductivity. The high aspect ratio of LCNFs significantly improved the mechanical strength of the hydrogel electrolyte by facilitating the intertwining of LCNFs with acrylamide molecules. The resulting hydrogel electrolyte demonstrated exceptional mechanical strength (485 kPa), high ionic conductivity (26.1 ms/cm), strong adhesion (225 kPa), and excellent environmental stability (up to −80 °C). A supercapacitor assembled with this hydrogel showed a remarkable specific capacitance (200 F/g) and exhibited high sensitivity in electrical signal applications. This work demonstrates the transformation of wood fiber into functional lignocellulose-based materials, highlighting the high-value utilization of lignocellulose resources for energy storage and other applications.
