Development of efficient photocatalysts is vital for light-driven removal of refractory antibiotics. Herein, Bi 2 WO 6 microspheres were successfully anchored on the surface of bentonite, and metallic Bi was reduced in-situ by a one-step solvothermal method. Notably, the Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 /BT with a mass ratio of 0.15:1:0.1 exhibited the best photocatalytic activity toward degradation of tetracycline (TC) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) after 120 min of visible light irradiation, and their reaction rate constants were 8.0 and 5.5 folds higher than that of pristine Bi 2 WO 6 , respectively. The boosted photocatalytic activity over Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 /BT was ascribed to the establishment of electrostatic repulsion and SPR effect, which synergistically promoted charges transfer, thus achieving more h + and ·O 2 − radical generation. Moreover, possible TC and CIP degradation pathways over Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 /BT were proposed based on the identified intermediates, and most of the intermediates were less toxic than TC and CIP. The study provides options to develop high-efficiency photocatalytic composites for contaminants elimination using semiconductors and readily available bentonite.

With rapid economic growth and urbanisation, the reuse and recycling of solid wastes has become a high priority for the sustainable development of modern cities. In this study, two typical solid wastes, incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA) and waste bentonite , were co-valorised to produce granular adsorbents through a simple and energy-saving pelletisation/sintering process. A mixture of ISSA and bentonite at a weight ratio of 3:1 was pelletised and sintered at 700 °C. The resultant ceramsite, with good mechanical strength, could effectively remove Pb(Ⅱ) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption kinetics can be described by the pseudo-first-order (PFO) model. The results indicated that the Pb(Ⅱ) adsorption process was dominated by electrostatic attraction , precipitation, and complexation. The isothermal data exhibited a good correlation with the Freundlich model, indicating that the adsorption process was non-ideal and spontaneous. The maximum adsorption capacity was approximately 21.6 ± 0.35 mg/g at 318 K. After 5 cycles of regeneration, the adsorbent maintained good adsorption performance. Moreover, the removal rate was not greatly affected by ionic strength . These findings demonstrate that the granular adsorbent prepared with ISSA and waste bentonite can be recognised as a promising adsorbent for Pb-containing wastewater treatment .

In order to endow alkaline Ca-bentonite (ACB) with magnetic separation ability, simultaneously obtain better magnetic stability and stronger removal capacity of heavy metal cations; magnetic alkaline Ca-bentonite/carboxymethylcellulose-chitosan film (MACB/C-C) was prepared by organic modification of magnetic alkaline Ca-bentonite (MACB) using non-toxic carboxymethylcellulose and chitosan. Textural characterization results revealed that magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were successfully immobilized on ACB and modified with C-C. The functionalized layer of C-C concurrently enhanced the stability of Fe 3 O 4 and removal performances of heavy metal cations. Adsorption results indicated that MACB/C-C exhibited thorough separation from aqueous solution and greater uptake ability for Pb(II) and Cd(II) (483 mg·g −1 and 123 mg·g −1 ) than the nascent MACB (335 mg·g −1 and 76 mg·g −1 ), respectively, at pH 5 and 25 °C temperature. The adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) on MACB/C-C mainly occurred via surface precipitation and complexation when pH > 2. MACB/C-C could be efficiently recycled with marginal decrease in adsorption capacity. The current approach credited to the convenient operation, simplified synthesis, and high efficiency of MACB/C-C could be deemed as a promising alternative for the removal of heavy metal cations from wastewater.

Diclofenac potassium (DCF-K) is a widely used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug with enhanced therapeutic effects mediated by its bioactive metabolites, particularly 4′-hydroxydiclofenac (4′-OH-DCF) and 5-hydroxydiclofenac (5-OH-DCF). However, the accurate detection of DCF-K and its metabolites in complex biological matrices remains challenging due to trace concentrations and matrix interference. To address this challenge, a chitosan-bentonite molecularly imprinted polymer (CB-MIP) was developed using a dual-role strategy, where chitosan-bentonite (CB) serves as both substrate and functional monomer, combined with a hierarchical functional monomer system (acrylamide as an auxiliary monomer) to enhance binding affinity and selectivity for the specific capture of DCF-K and its metabolites. Comprehensive characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of CB-MIP, revealing improved stability, hydrophilicity, and a mesoporous structure. CB-MIP exhibited good adsorption capacity for DCF-K (17.2× higher than CB), with Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics indicating monolayer chemisorption. Selectivity studies demonstrated good recognition capability for DCF-K, achieving a selectivity factor up to 77.3 against structural analogs and co-administered drugs. Furthermore, cluster analysis revealed the CB-MIP sensitivity to DCF-K concentration variations as low as 0.3 μg·mL −1 in complex matrices. Mechanistic studies identified electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions as the primary binding forces, validated by electrostatic potential simulations, hydrogen-bond modeling, and spectroscopic analyses. Practical application in mouse plasma and liver samples confirmed efficient enrichment and detection of DCF-K and metabolites (4′-OH-DCF, 5-OH-DCF, diclofenac acyl glucuronide) using CB-MIP coupled with HPLC/UPLC-MS/MS, achieving high sensitivity (limit of detection: 0.231 μg·mL −1 in liver) and reproducibility (relative standard deviation: 1.22 %–5.81 %). This work establishes CB-MIP as a robust pretreatment material for targeted drug/metabolite analysis in complex biological systems.

A novel soil-bentonite backfill is proposed for use in vertical cutoff walls to contain phenol in groundwater at contaminated sites. The backfill consists of sand and bentonite modified with tetramethylammonium and carboxymethylcellulose, labeled as STCMB backfill. Flexible-wall permeability and double-reservoir diffusion tests were conducted to investigate the impact of phenol solution on hydraulic conductivity ( k ), effective diffusion coefficient ( D *) and partition coefficient ( K p ) of the backfill, respectively. The permeability results showed k of the STCMB backfill decreased by 0.91 times when the permeating liquid was changed from tap water to phenol solution. The diffusion testing results showed that D * values for the STCMB and conventional backfill (labeled as SCB backfill) were 4.0 × 10 −10 m 2 /s and 3.0 × 10 −10 m 2 /s, respectively, whereas K p values for the STCMB and SCB backfills were 2.0 mL/g and 0.75 mL/g, respectively. The octanol-water partition coefficient model is suitable for estimating K p for nonpolar organics. Furthermore, a series of solute transport simulations using Pollute V7 program was performed to evaluate the performance of vertical cutoff walls comprising STCMB and SCB backfills in containing phenol in lateral flowing groundwater. Overall, the STCMB backfill has demonstrated superior effectiveness in containing phenol in groundwater.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) is a biodegradable polyester, and its application range is limited by the poor flame retardancy and low modulus. Bentonite (BNT) as a green inorganic filler can improve the modulus and flame retardancy of PHA to a certain extent. An in situ polymerization method was designed to intercalate P-N-containing hyperbranched macromolecules (HBM) among BNT layers (HBM-B) and to improve the flame retardancy while improving the dispersion of BNT in the PHA matrix. The layer spacing of BNT was increased from 1.2 nm to 4.5 nm. The effect law of the joint action of in situ intercalation of BNT and the HBM on flame retardancy and mechanical properties of PHA was systematically studied. The HBM-B showed stronger flame retardancy when the mass ratio of HBM to BNT was 75/25. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) of the PHA/HBM-B composite was increased to 27.6 % while maintaining good toughness. Compared to the physical blend of HBM and BNT (HBM/B), the elongation at break of PHA/HBM-B 25 composites can be increased by up to 10 times. When the content of HBM-B is up to 15 wt%, the LOI of PHA-Based composites can reach 29.6 % and the UL-94 rating reaches V-0, which meets the standard of flame-retardant material. Therefore, the present work is expected to expand the application of PHA-based composites in the field of flame retardancy.

In this work, a novel 2-dimentional (2D)-2D bentonite/g-C 3 N 4 composite (B/g-C 3 N 4 ), with a layer-layer cross structure and large surface area, was synthesized by a self-assembly process, with the aim for the photocatalytic oxidation of arsenic (As(III)) in wastewater. The structure and properties of the mineral-based composite were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and photocurrent measurements. The photocatalytic activity of 2D-2D B/g-C3N4 for As(III) removal was further investigated under visible light . The results reveal that the As(III) oxidation rate by 2D-2D B/g-C3N4 composite was three times higher than that by pure g-C3N4, owing to the enlarged specific surface area and the suppressed electron–hole recombination by the incorporated bentonite. Moreover, the composite exhibited a high photocatalytic oxidation efficiency in a wide pH adaptability from 3 to 8.5. Through electron spin resonance (ESR) technique and radical quenching experiments, the photocatalytic mechanism of As(III) oxidation was proposed, where superoxide radicals played a critical role in the photo-oxidation of As(III) in both acid and basic conditions. This work paved a new way to design the mineral-based photocatalyst for treatment of pollutants in a wide pH range.

Poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-grafted bentonite, marked as Bent-PDMAEMA, was designed and prepared by a surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization method for the first time in this study. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were applied to characterize the structure of Bent-PDMAEMA, which resulted in the successful synthesis of Bent-PDMAEMA. As a cationic adsorbent, the designed Bent-PDMAEMA was used to remove dye Orange I from wastewater. The adsorption property of Bent-PDMAEMA for Orange I dye was investigated under different experimental conditions, such as solution pH, initial dye concentration, contact time and temperature. Under the optimum conditions, the adsorption amount of Bent-PDMAEMA for Orange I dye could reach 700 mg·g−1, indicating the potential application of Bent-PDMAEMA for anionic dyes in the treatment of wastewater. Moreover, the experimental data fitted well with the Langmuir model. The adsorption process obeyed pseudo-second-order kinetic process mechanism. Keywords:PDMAEMA;polymer brushes;Orange I;dyes removal;water treatment

A one-step, green process is reported for synthesis of poly([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethylammonium chloride) (PMETAC) modified bentonite (Bent-PMETAC). The Bent-PMETAC was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Zeta potential, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The results indicated that large amounts of PMETAC were successfully grafted on the surface and interlayers of bentonite, and changed the Zeta potential of the sample from negative to positive. Acid Orange 7 (AO 7), as adsorbate, was used to test the anionic dye adsorption of the samples. The batch adsorption results implied that this novel Bent-PMETAC adsorbent exhibited a much higher removal (95%) of AO 7 than bentonite (10%). In addition, the adsorption process was hardly influenced by pH, which is in good agreement with the results of the Zeta potential analysis. The equilibrium adsorption isotherms and the adsorption kinetics of AO 7 fitted well to the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of AO 7 onto Bent-PMETAC was 208.6 mg·g−1 at 298 K, which is much higher than for most other materials. Overall, the results indicated the Bent-PMETAC is a low-cost, simple synthesis and highly efficient adsorbent for anionic dye removal from aqueous solutions.

Conservation of sandstone-based cultural heritage has attracted a great deal of interest. We propose herein a novel protecting strategy, via in situ fabrication of bentonite-based hydrogels (B-H) inside sandstones, where the bentonite-based hydrogels serve as the underlying cement. To create bentonite-based hydrogels with controllable structure, possessing good mechanical and anti-swelling properties, we have optimized forming time, appearance, and viscosity. The hydrogel precursor penetrated into the pores of the sandstone; the hydrogel would then form within 3–5 h. As found by employing a fluorescent tracer, the precursor remained controllably in place without any apparent change in the sandstone morphology. The bentonite-based hydrogels that formed inside the sandstones presented strong hydrogen bonding, coordination, and ionic bonding, as well as strong mechanical interlocking to the sandstone matrix. As a result, the sandstones possessed enhanced mechanical compressive strength and excellent resistance to acid, salt, and freeze–thaw cycles. Our approach provides for a non-destructive, eco-friendly, easy-to-use, and long-term strategy for cultural preservation, one with excellent protection effects.

Recently, natural dyes have a widening scope in various traditional and advanced applications due to their eco-friendly environment. However, improved dyeability of natural dyes still remains a challenging task. This research was aimed to achieve multi-objective wool with improved dyeability using bio-nano-mordant composed of m-Trans-glutaminase, m-TGase, and bentonite nanoclay. Wool fiber was treated through sonochemical method using different concentrations of m-TGase and bentonite. The surface morphology of wool fabric samples was examined by field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and Fourier transform Infrared Radiation (FTIR). Further, wool samples treated at different conditions were applied to madder for dyeability examination. The optimum conditions of color coordinates, color strength, K/S, and washing fastness of madder on treated wool fabric with m-TGase and bentonite, were also examined. The results revealed well-made interactions among m-TGase, bentonite, and wool fibers. In addition, surface morphology was strongly influenced by variations in enzyme concentrations so that extra addition of m-TGase lead to clear damage scales or less cuticle surface in SEM images. Moreover, the results showed that the value of K/S for treated wool samples was better than untreated samples. Indeed, amongst all, 5% concentrations of bio-nano-mordant for m-TGase and bentonite have the most constructive K/S values. Similarly, results of Δ E and antibacterial investigations also confirmed its superiority.

A mechanically reinforced and highly conductive silk fibroin/polyacrylamide/bentonite double-network hydrogel is designed. • The optimized nanogenerator delivers stable pressure- and frequency-dependent outputs with excellent operational durability. • The nanogenerator enables real-time sensing for gait analysis, Morse code, and basketball montion in virtual reality. Silk fibroin (SF)-based hydrogels have emerged as promising electrodes for flexible triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) due to their biocompatibility and flexibility. However, their intrinsic weaknesses in mechanical strength and conductivity hinder practical applications. Herein, we introduce a synergistic design that combines hierarchical molecular ordering with nanofiller-facilitated ionic conduction to construct a silk fibroin/polyacrylamide/bentonite double-network hydrogel (SPBH), effectively overcoming the longstanding trade-off between mechanical strength and electrical conductivity. The introduction of bentonite nanosheets induces β-sheet crystallization in SF chains while establishing interconnected conductive pathways, effectively resolving the historical trade-off between mechanical robustness and electrical performance. The optimized SPBH demonstrates exceptional tensile strength, high ionic conductivity, and remarkable sensitivity to dynamic stimuli. More importantly, a skin-conformal SPBH-based TENG sensor (SPBH-TS) is fabricated, which achieves stable pressure/frequency responses and operational durability exceeding 10,000 cycles. Our SPBH-TS enables non-invasive monitoring of physiological signals, including joint kinematics and gait patterns, while functioning as a self-powered interface for Morse code communication. To further validate its multifunctionality, an immersive basketball training platform is constructed through integration with Unity 3D and Steam VR frameworks, thereby demonstrating SPBH-TS’s capability in adaptive human-computer interaction. Our work has established a scalable design paradigm for self-powered sensors, ensuring the safety of wearable devices through the encapsulation of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and has laid the groundwork for next-generation wearable technology applications in areas such as health monitoring, IoT systems, and interactive virtual environments.
