Preparation of CNTs-HfB2-SiBCN ceramic composite coatings with adjusted electrical conductivity

Xingang Luan,Qinghua Zhao,Xuefei Sun,Shaomin Gu,Xichao Dong,Laifei Cheng,Ralf Riedel

Aiming at the lack of stable and reliable electrode materials for high temperature wireless sensors , a solution was proposed to use SiBCN ceramic as thin film electrode. To optimize the conductivity of SiBCN coatings, different conductive fillers were incorporated into the precursor solution to prepare conductive SiBCN coatings and the relationship between the coating process parameters, surface morphology and conductivity was established. The results show that the microstructure of the composite can be adjusted in terms of the HfB 2 /CNT ratio to optimize the electrical conductivity . HfB 2 and CNTs are evenly distributed in the coating by adding dispersants and ground SiBCN self-fillers. The electrical conductivity of SiBCN coatings can be greatly enhanced by adding HfB 2 and CNTs fillers. Integrating conductive fillers such as HfB 2 and CNTs can form a diafiltration path and the resistivity of the prepared coating has been determined to be as low as 0.13 ± 0.01 Ω m. The conductivity did not necessarily increase with an increasing amount of fillers. Adding a balanced amount of filler particles to the ceramic matrix is the requirement for optimizing the electrical conductivity of the coating.

Ion Enrichment-Mediated Charge Transfer in CNTs-Based Films for Infrared Electrochromism

Junlin Liu,Shujuan Tan,Tong Xu,Xin Yan,Tianyu Chen,Jing Zheng,Guangbin Ji

In response to a rapidly changing background environment, carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-based infrared electrochromic materials have emerged as a research focus due to their fast response kinetics and high flexibility. Nevertheless, the microscopic mechanism governing the relationship between infrared emissivity and applied bias voltage remains vague. In this work, a defect-engineering strategy is employed to fabricate sulfur/nitrogen co-doped CNTs (SNCNT) films as a model system for mechanism investigation. It is revealed that the core process lies in ion enrichment-mediated charge transfer, regulating macroscopic conductivity. Specifically, accumulated ions can dynamically reconstruct the film architecture, facilitating ion–electron interactions within an electrical double-layer capacitive framework. This process presents an asymmetric operation mechanism that anions induce hole doping, while cations promote electron doping. First-principles calculations further correlate ion-specific modulation with orbital energy depth and π-conjugation degree. By integrating these insights, a multi-dimension qualitative model is proposed to correlate infrared emissivity with interfacial contact resistance, charge-transfer dynamics, and atomic-scale structure. The optimized SNCNT film system demonstrates an infrared modulation width of Δε = 0.601, accompanied by notable bia-removal memory behavior (Δε/Δ t = −0.0018 s −1 ), underscoring its potential in infrared camouflage, information encryption, and electromagnetic shielding.

Flexible freestanding PANI/MoS2/CNTs ternary films with synergistically enhanced thermoelectric performance

Wei Guo,Xiaofeng Li,Taihua Zhang,Yan An

Flexible freestanding PANI/MoS 2 /CNTs (PMC) composite films were fabricated using a simple drop-casting method. The introduction of metallic 1T-MoS 2 nanosheets significantly increased the Seebeck coefficient ( S ) of the polyaniline (PANI) matrix through its intrinsic high S and the interfacial energy-filtering effect. The incorporation of highly conductive carbon nanotubes (CNTs) constructed an efficient percolated network, which dramatically enhanced carrier mobility and electrical conductivity ( σ ). The optimized PMC2.5 film achieved a peak power factor ( PF ) of 45.12 μW m −1  K −2 at 378 K and a low thermal conductivity ( κ ) of 0.226 W m −1  K −1 at 298 K, leading to a thermoelectric figure of merit ( ZT ) of 0.036. The film exhibited excellent flexibility, retaining over 91% of its initial σ and 98% of its S after 1000 bending cycles. A flexible thermoelectric generator assembled from these films generated stable voltage output under a small temperature gradient, demonstrating the potential of this ternary composite system for wearable energy harvesting applications.

CNTs-reinforced interpenetrating network within hydrogel electrolytes for enhanced Zn anode stability

Zhichao Xu,Wenchong Ouyang,Lin Mei,Zhuochao Pan,Jiangnan Chu,Kun Wang,Zhengwei Wu

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are highly promising for large-scale energy storage due to their intrinsic safety and low cost. However, their practical deployment is hindered by several challenges in liquid electrolytes, including zinc dendrite growth, undesirable side reactions, and interfacial instability. Hydrogel electrolytes, with their three-dimensional polymer networks, offer a compelling alternative by physically suppressing dendrite formation and enhancing device safety. Yet, conventional hydrogels often suffer from non-uniform salt distribution, insufficient mechanical strength, and poor interfacial regulation, issues that are especially pronounced when prepared via post-gelation salt immersion, ultimately compromising ion transport and causing inconsistent electrochemical performance. To overcome these limitations, this work designs an advanced in situ interpenetrating network composite strategy that synergistically integrates functional polymers and conductive nanofillers. Specifically, a carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-reinforced polyacrylamide (PAM)-xanthan gum (XG) hydrogel electrolyte, denoted as CNTs-PAM-XG, was fabricated through in situ polymerization in the presence of dissolved zinc sulfate, thereby ensuring homogeneous salt distribution and robust structural integrity. The resulting electrolyte exhibits excellent mechanical properties, with a fracture strength of 130 kPa and a tensile strain exceeding 320%, while maintaining stable ion conduction pathways, as confirmed by the simultaneous increase in both total ionic conductivity and Zn²⁺ transference number. In Zn//Zn symmetric cells, the electrolyte enables stable cycling for over 2100 h at a current density of 1 mA cm⁻². Moreover, Zn//MnO₂ full cells achieve 72.2% capacity retention after 1500 cycles at 1 A g⁻¹ , representing a significant improvement over traditional single-network hydrogel. Microstructural analyses reveal that the CNTs network facilitates a homogenized ion flux, while the functional groups in XG effectively modulate the Zn²⁺ solvation environment. These synergistic effects collectively inhibit dendritic growth and mitigate detrimental side reactions. Overall, this work provides a viable design strategy for developing high-performance and durable electrolyte systems suitable for AZIBs.

Ti2PW10@CNTs composite-enabled electrochemical sensor for highly sensitive methyl parathion detection

Xue-Rui Dong,Miao Miao,Zhe Lin,Qiao Gao

Methyl parathion (MP), a highly poisonous organophosphorus pesticide, demands precise detection owing to its detrimental residues in agricultural products and human health hazards. Herein, a novel electrochemical sensor based on a nanocomposite of Ti-substituted Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM, Ti 2 PW 10 ) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was developed for sensitive monitoring of MP. The Ti 2 PW 10 @CNTs composite was successfully fabricated and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), Power X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray and photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electrochemical techniques. Owing to the synergistic effect between Ti 2 PW 10 and CNTs, superior analytical performance for MP was exhibited by the Ti 2 PW 10 @CNTs/GCE. Within the 0.8–8 μM concentration range, it achieved low detection limit (65.55 nM, S/N = 3) and high sensitivity (3.048 μA·μM −1 ), coupled with favorable selectivity, reproducibility and stability. Moreover, the Ti 2 PW 10 @CNTs/GCE was applied to detect the MP content in actual licorice samples, yielding recoveries of 101.5 %–104.5 %. This study offers a novel strategy for constructing a highly sensitive electrochemical sensing platform to monitor MP residues.

Tannic acid-mediated surface engineering of CNTs for enhanced bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis

Xiangmin Tang,Luyao Zou,Xiaopeng Li,Zhipeng Xu,Huilin Fan,Chao Lin,Jung-Ho Lee

Developing stable and efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions is essential for rechargeable metal–air batteries. Here, we reported a facile surface modification strategy of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as air electrocatalysts for zinc–air batteries (ZABs). By leveraging the versatile binding affinity of tannic acid with metal ions and carbon surfaces, the CNTs surface was coated with a uniform, thin layer of nitrogen-doped carbon featuring atomically dispersed cobalt. The atomic cobalt and rich nitrogen endow the material with high intrinsic activity in oxygen electrocatalysis. Moreover, the carbon layer optimizes the hydrophilicity of CNTs, and the interwoven CNTs network enables fast electron transfer and accelerated reactant diffusion. The assembled aqueous and solid-state ZABs deliver good rate performance (discharging current density in the liquid-state ZAB: 0–100 mA cm−2, solid-state ZAB: 0.5–10 mA cm−2) and nice cycling stability.

Asymmetric bilayer CNTs-elastomer/hydrogel composite as soft actuators with sensing performance

Huijing Li,Yun Liang,Guorong Gao,Shuxin Wei,Yukun Jian,Xiaoxia Le,Wei Lu,Qingquan Liu,Jiawei Zhang,Tao Chen

Living creatures have the nature of actuating and sensing under external stimuli to better adapt to the environment. For instance, the combination of muscles actuation and skin sensing ensures our intelligent interaction with external environments. In terms of the soft robot, implanting sensation and actuation in one system can assist us to control it better and more efficiently. However, in the development of biomimetic materials, the simultaneous realization of actuating and sensing performance in bionic soft robots is still a great challenge. Here, we propose a novel asymmetric bilayer CNTs-elastomer/PNIPAm hydrogel composite with integrated actuating and sensing performances. Due to the excellent photothermal effect of CNTs and thermo-responsiveness of PNIPAm, under the NIR irradiation, the PNIPAm hydrogel layer would shrink and the bilayer composite would thus perform a bending deformation. At the same time, based on a piezoresistive sensing mechanism of the CNTs-elastomer, the actuating procedure can be recorded. This work may open up a new insight in the designing and fabricating intelligent biomimetic hydrogel soft robots with integrated self-sensing capacity.

Three dimensional CNTs aerogel/MoSx as an electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction

Sathish Reddy,Ran Du,Lixing Kang,Nannan Mao,Jin Zhang

Preparation of electrocatalysts with high activity and low cost are essential for mass production of hydrogen. However, preparation of such catalyst are still highly challenging thus far. In this paper, we focus on preparation of a three- dimensional CNTs aerogel/MoS x catalyst by using solvothermal process. The MoS x material has been successfully combined with three- dimensional CNTs aerogel and creates a sufficient active site exposure as well as 3D conductive networks for fast charge transport. Due to this the catalyst exhibited high activity for HER with a small onset over potential of ∼150   mV, a Tafel slope of 62   mV   dec −1 , and an exchange current density of 6.4   mA   cm −2 . The catalysts also show excellent stability during long-term 1000 cycles and electrolysis confirm the durability of the catalyst. The enhanced performance is attributed to synergistic effects of CNTs aerogel and MoSx, which enhance the activities for both components for HER.

Preparation and Study on the Flame-Retardant Properties of CNTs/PMMA Microspheres

Lanjuan Xu,Juncheng Jiang,Xinlei Jia,Yingying Hu,Lei Ni,Chao Li,Wenjie Guo

In this paper, carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composites with excellent thermal stability and flame retardancy were prepared by in situ polymerization. The morphology, structure, transmittance, thermal stability, flame retardancy, and mechanical properties of the materials were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), cone calorimetry, etc. According to the results, the initial decomposition temperature of CNTs/PMMA prepared using carbon nanotubes with a concentration of 2 mg/mL increases from 175 to 187 °C when compared with pure PMMA, and the weight loss ratio decreases significantly at the same time. In addition, the maximum limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of CNTs/PMMA composites is 22.17, which is 26.9% higher than that of PMMA. SEM images of residues after LOI tests demonstrate that when CNTs/PMMA is heated, a dense and stable interconnected network structure (i.e., carbon layer) is formed, which can effectively inhibit the combustion of pyrolysis products, prevent the transfer of heat and combustible gas, and finally interrupt the combustion of composite materials. However, a 25% decrease in the transmittance of CNTs/PMMA composites is observed in the Ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectra. Although the addition of CNTs reduces the transparency of PMMA, its tensile and impact strength are all improved, which illustrates that CNT is a competitive flame retardant for PMMA.

Improving thermo-electrochemical cell performance by constructing Ag–MgO–CNTs nanocomposite electrodes

Weijin Qian,Mengjie Li,Lihong Chen,Jianghui Zhang,Changkun Dong

The application of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a thermo-electrochemical cell (TEC) electrode is still difficult due to their weak contact with the substrate during the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method. In this study, by doping the suspension of the CNTs with Mg2+ and Ag powder, Ag–MgO–CNT nanocomposites were successfully prepared on a stainless steel (SS) substrate using the EPD method. The products were confirmed using characterization by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The TEC performance of the Ag–MgO–CNTs nanocomposite electrodes was significantly improved due to their higher conductivity, thermal conductivity and improved adhesion between the composite film and the SS substrate, depending on the concentrations of the Ag powder. The results suggest that constructing Ag–MgO–CNTs nanocomposite electrodes can effectively enhance the performance of CNTs-based TECs, which might be a promising way for energy harvesting using CNTs-based TECs prepared via the EPD technique.

Tuning the Acidity of Pt/ CNTs Catalysts for Hydrodeoxygenation of Diphenyl Ether

Weixiang Guan,Chuang Li,Xiao Chen,Xiao-Ying Lu,Chi-Wing Tsang,Haoquan Hu,Hongxu Qi,Changhai Liang

We herein present a method for the synthesis of HNbWO6, HNbMoO6, HTaWO6 solid acid nanosheet modified Pt/CNTs. By varying the weight of various solid acid nanosheets, a series of Pt/xHMNO6/CNTs with different solid acid compositions (x = 5, 20 wt%; M = Nb, Ta; N = Mo, W) have been prepared by carbon nanotube pretreatment, protonic exchange, solid acid exfoliation, aggregation and finally Pt particles impregnation. The Pt/xHMNO6/CNTs are characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and NH3-temperature programmed desorption. The study revealed that HNbWO6 nanosheets were attached on CNTs, with some edges of the nanosheets being bent in shape. The acid strength of the supported Pt catalysts increases in the following order: Pt/CNTs < Pt/5HNbWO6/CNTs < Pt/20HNbMoO6/CNTs < Pt/20HNbWO6/CNTs < Pt/20HTaWO6/CNTs. In addition, the catalytic hydroconversion of lignin-derived model compound: diphenyl ether using the synthesized Pt/20HNbWO6 catalyst has been investigated.
