Background: carbon dot nanozymes (CDszymes) hold significant promise for sensing applications due to their excellent water solubility and intrinsic fluorescence. However, conventional approaches for synthesizing CDszymes with high peroxidase-like (POD) activity remain largely empirical, relying on trial-and-error precursor screening, which limits rational design and optimization. Results: carbon dot nanoenzymes (CDszymes) demonstrate potential applications in nanoenzymatic sensing due to their excellent solubility and intrinsic fluorescence. However, conventional methods for synthesizing CDszymes with high peroxidase (POD) activity rely on empirical precursor screening. In this study, CDszymes with optimal POD activity were rationally designed by regulating the carbon chain length of dicarboxylic acids. Among the six synthesized CDszymes, ethanedioic acid-derived CDszymes-2 exhibited the highest POD activity, which catalyzes the oxidation of TMB by H2O2 to produce blue oxidized TMB (oxTMB), alongside fluorescence quenching via an inner filter effect. Utilizing glyphosate's (GLY) inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), a dual-mode colorimetric/fluorescent sensing platform was established, attaining detection limits of 13 ng mL−1 (colorimetric) and 7 ng mL−1 (fluorescent). Dual-mode sensing was successfully applied to detect GLY in fruit and vegetable samples, demonstrating potential for ultrasensitive trace-level pesticide detection in agricultural products.

The extensive utilization of glyphosate (Gly) leads to food contamination that poses the potential threat to human health. Therefore, it is urgent need to develop high-sensitivity methods for Gly detection. Herein, a dual-lanthanide metal-organic framework (Ln-MOF) integrating electrospinning nanofiber membrane was fabricated via in-situ growth strategy for the ratiometric fluorescence sensing of Gly. This strategy equips the sensor with a porous structure, which is beneficial for the pre-concentration of low-concentration analytes. The binding of Gly and Tb 3+ weakened the ligand-to-metal energy transfer, leading to the luminescence decrease of Tb-MOF. Meanwhile, the luminescence of Eu-MOF remained unchanged due to the small channel, resulting in a ratiometric response. The sensor exhibited a good linearity in the concentration range of 0.1–20 μM with a detection limit of 32 nM, and achieved satisfactory performances in food detection. Collectively, the proposed sensor may provide a new inspiration and have great potential for practical applications.

Glyphosate has received a great deal of attention due to its persistence in the environment and its potential carcinogenicity. Traditional Fenton catalytic methods for glyphosate removal are often hindered by the aggregation and passivation of catalysts, and the formation of toxic intermediates, such as aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA). In this study, a synergistic heterojunction comprising nano-zero-valent copper (nZVC) and CeO x was engineered on a biochar (BC) interface (nZVC/CeO x @BC) to investigate the behavior and mechanism of glyphosate degradation. The results showed that glyphosate removal reached 96.9% within 20 min, and complete degradation was achieved within 60 min in the nZVC/CeO x @BC/H 2 O 2 system. Importantly, the catalyst could be used in a pH range of 2–10, and the degradation efficiency of this catalyst remained above 95% even after six cycles. DFT calculations and experimental results revealed that the heterostructure facilitates interfacial electron transfer through the formation of electron bridges and the reversible Ce(III)/Ce(IV) redox couple. This enhanced electron-transfer pathway promoted the continuous activation of H 2 O 2 and generation of reactive oxygen species, thereby accelerating the oxidation and degradation of glyphosate while suppressing active-site deactivation and improving catalyst stability. Moreover, the degradation pathway was diverted towards the formation of the environmentally benign compound glycine (70.95 μM, conversion rate ≈ 60%), thus suppressing the formation of AMPA (0.18 μM, conversion rate ≈ 0.15%). This study highlights the crucial role of interfacial electron-transfer-enhanced heterojunctions in regulating glyphosate degradation pathways and provides an effective strategy for efficient glyphosate degradation.

This study investigated LDHs-MgAl preparation factors on Gly adsorption performance. The single-factor experiments shown that CO 3 2− -type LDHs-400-MgAl prepared under the condition of calcination temperature of 400 °C, calcination time of 3 h, Mg/Al molar ratio of 2:1, synthesis pH of 10, preparation temperature of 30 °C and aging temperature of 25 °C, had better Gly adsorption performance due to its enhanced crystallinity and hierarchical porosity. Moreover, the Gly adsorption process optimization with LDHs-400-MgAl via the response surface methodology (RSM) was studied. The relative error between the actual value and the predicted value obtained from the RSM model is 0.39 % and the determination coefficient (R 2 ) is 0.9987, which means the Gly adsorption process with LDHs-400-MgAl can be predicted by the proposed RSM model. This work integrates material synthesis optimization with process engineering, offering a scalable strategy for Gly removal in complex wastewater matrices.

The increasing persistence of harmful ions and pesticide residues has been a matter of concern due to their pernicious and ubiquitous impact on environmental processes. Herein, we design a ratiometric fluorescent platform for the cascade identification of Cu 2+ and glyphosate, which is devised by grafting rhodamine 6G onto F, N-doped carbon dots (F, N-CDs@Rh6G). The formation of F, N-CDs@Rh6G/Cu 2+ chelation complex induces fluorescence quenching at 438 nm, attributed to static complex formation and photoinduced energy transfer. Subsequently, the introduction of glyphosate reverses the binding priority of the chelated complex and results in the recovery of fluorescence signal at 438 nm, while the reference peak (558 nm) remains relatively stable. Under optimal conditions, the fluorescent probe exhibits the low detection limits (LODs) for Cu 2+ (61 nM) and glyphosate (53 nM). Additionally, a portable microcavity sensing platform combining with smartphone is devised for visual and on-site quantification of Cu 2+ and glyphosate with the exceptional LODs. Therefore, this newly microcavity with F, N-CDs@Rh6G provides a reliable cascade sensing platform for Cu 2+ and glyphosate determination, showcasing potential applications.

Glyphosate (Gly) is a widely-used herbicide in food production, while, the residue of which due to the long-term and excessive overspray poses serious threats to public health. The development of reliable methods for its sensitive detection is of great urgency. In this study, a novel ratiometric fluorescent nanosensor by encapsulating N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) in zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) as the dual-emissive fluorescence probes at 410 and 650 nm, respectively, was constructed for Gly detection. Due to the adsorption property of ZIF-8, the N-CDs/AuNCs@ZIF-8 nanoprobes accumulated Cu 2+ to quench the red fluorescence of AuNCs, and the blue fluorescence of N-CDs was stable. While thiocholine, a product of acetylthiocholine, hydrolyzed by acetylcholinesterase could coordinate with Cu 2+ , resulting in significant fluorescence recovery of AuNCs. This phenomenon was utilized for the quantitation of Gly, due to its inhibitory effect on acetylcholinesterase activity. By calculating the fluorescence intensity ratio ( I 650 /I 410 ), Gly in real sample could be accurately determined in a concentration range of 2–100 ng/mL with a limit of detection of 1.92 ng/mL because of the anti-interference and the self-correction ability of the two fluorescence signals. The N-CDs/AuNCs@ZIF-8 nanoprobes-assisted ratiometric fluorescent nanosensor exhibited unique merits of rapid construction, simple operation, high specificity, and good accuracy for Gly in edible and medicinal malt samples with recoveries of 93.7–108.2 %. This study presents a multiple tool for the versatile sensing of trace pesticides in more food matrices, which can be extended to a full range of environmental and food safety applications.

Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide widely used in agriculture, and its overexposure poses significant health and environmental risks. Herein, a novel Cu 2+ -coordinated fluorescent sensing system (HYBC-Cu 2+ system) based on acylhydrazone groups was designed, capable of glyphosate-specific recognition. The HYBC-Cu 2+ system was constructed with simple steps, with the advantages of short recognition time (< 1 min), good specificity, anti-interference, and excellent sensitivity (LOD = 95 nM). The effect of proton functional group on glyphosate resulted in Cu 2+ of the HYBC-Cu 2+ system being able to be competed down by the glyphosate to release HYBC thus inducing the fluorescence enhancement of the system and realizing the rapid detection of glyphosate. The recognition mechanism by the HYBC-Cu 2+ system was verified by high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), density function theory (DFT) calculations and Job's Plot. The system can cycle alternately to detect the glyphosate more than 6 times and effectively quantify trace glyphosate in environmental samples. Furthermore, the HYBC-Cu 2+ system has low cytotoxicity and good membrane permeability, which can enter HeLa cells and zebrafish to react rapidly with exogenous glyphosate, resulting in fluorescence enhancements that are visually distinctive. The application of HYBC-Cu 2+ system can further promote the development of pesticide residue monitoring methods such as glyphosate and provide scientific basis for policy making and public health protection.

By combining boric acid-modified carbon dots ( p -CDs) and alizarin red (ARS), a double emission probe p -CDs@ARS with fluorescence at 410 nm and 600 nm is designed for the detection of glyphosate. When Cu 2+ is added, it binds with ARS to cause ARS release from p -CDs@ARS, which decreases the fluorescence at 600 nm. However, in the presence of glyphosate, glyphosate competes to the binding of Cu 2+ , releasing ARS to bind with p -CDs again. Therefore, the fluorescence of 600 nm recovers. Based on this, the fluorescence of 410 nm and 600 nm act as the reference and response signal, respectively, achieving the ratiometric fluorescence detection of glyphosate. The linear range of glyphosate detection is 0.5–50 µM with a limit of detection at 0.37 µM which is well below the maximum residue limit for glyphosate in food. When the probe is used to detect the glyphosate residue in Pearl River water and cucumber, the detection results are well consistent with those detected by HPLC. The established method based on p -CDs@ARS has the advantages that the assembly of ratiometric fluorescence probe is simple, and the detection speed is fast. Additionally, a typical INHIBIT logical system has been successfully constructed based on glyphosate, Cu 2+ , and the fluorescence signal of p -CDs@ARS. Graphical

A novel fluorescent probe for Cu 2+ determination based on the fluorescence quenching of glyphosate (Glyp)-functionalized quantum dots (QDs) was firstly reported. Glyp had been used to modify the surface of QDs to form Glyp-functionalized QDs following the capping of thioglycolic acid on the core–shell CdTe/CdS QDs. Under the optimal conditions, the response was linearly proportional to the concentration of Cu 2+ between 2.4 × 10 −2 μg mL −1 and 28 μg mL −1 , with a detection limit of 1.3 × 10 −3 μg mL −1 (3 δ ). The Glyp-functionalized QDs fluorescent probe offers good sensitivity and selectivity for detecting Cu 2+ . The fluorescent probe was successfully used for the determination of Cu 2+ in environmental samples. The mechanism of reaction was also discussed.

Glyphosate and microplastics are widely found in marine, terrestrial, and freshwater environments due to their globally widespread application. Further, they have proved to have specific ecotoxicity effects on aquatic plants. However, few studies have focused on the effects of small plastic particles and glyphosate, or especially, their combined effect on vascular plants in freshwater ecosystems . This study aimed to conduct a simulated greenhouse experiment to investigate the ecotoxicity of polystyrene microplastics and glyphosate on the floating plant Salvinia cucullata by exposure to fluorescent polystyrene microplastics (1 μm; concentration, 3, 15, and 75 mg/L), glyphosate (5, 25, and 50 mg/L), and a mixture of the two (3 + 5, 15 + 25, and 75 + 50 mg/L) for seven days. Glyphosate significantly reduced the relative growth rate, photosynthetic capacity, and root activity of S. cucullata . Polystyrene microplastics did not significantly influence photosynthesis or leaf morphological characteristics but they significantly reduced relative growth rate and root activity in S. cucullata , indicating that the effects of microplastics on aquatic plants are potentially associated with different organs exposed to pollution. Polystyrene microplastics and glyphosate activated the plant antioxidant defense systems by increasing antioxidative enzyme activities including, superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, and catalase to cope with oxidative stress . Synergistic effects (only observed in percent leaf yellowing) were observed when S. cucullata was exposed to a high concentrations (≥15 + 25 mg/L) of glyphosate and microplastics. Our results indicate that pervasive microplastics and herbicide contamination in freshwater may potentially affect the growth of aquatic plants.

The detection of glyphosate (Glyp) in water is of increasing importance because of its potential danger to environmental and health. In this study, a simple and label free colorimetric method for Glyp detection is proposed based on the inhibition of peroxidase-like activity of Cu 2+ . Cu 2+ possesses the peroxidase-like activity that could catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to oxidized TMB (oxTMB) in the presence of H 2 O 2 , resulting in a color change of the solution. However, the peroxidase-like activity of Cu 2+ could be strongly hindered by Glyp due to the formation of Glyp–Cu 2+ complexes. The color change of the solution or the absorbance change of oxTMB is utilized to monitor the concentration of Glyp. The linear range of the proposed method is 2–200 μM and the detection limit is 1 μM. Furthermore, as low as 10 μM Glyp can be clearly distinguished by naked eyes. Also, this proposed method is successfully applied for screening Glyp in real samples and shows great promise for environmental monitoring owing to its simplicity, rapidness and high selectivity.

Ultrasensitive, reliable and prompt pre-warning of pesticide residue is critically significant to ensure environmental and food safety. Herein, a novel nanosensor fabricated by in situ encapsulating N -doped carbon dots into a porphyrin metal–organic framework was developed to ratiometric fluorescence (RF) and smartphone-integrated portable platform colorimetric dual-mode detection of glyphosate (GLP). The sensor responded to GLP by RF in the range of 0.01–6.67 mg/L with low limit of detection of 9.06 µg/L. Besides, a noticeable color evolution from pink purple to green under nature light was observed upon addition of GLP, thus a portable smartphone-integrated colorimetric platform was fabricated for visual colorimetric detecting GLP by incorporating the sensor with a smartphone and a 3D-printed mini-device. Interestingly, the platform can detect GLP merely by virtue of a built-in flashlight of the smartphone and Color Analyser Application. Additionally, desirable recoveries of 94.0–112.5 % and 90.0–113.6 % in spiked real samples were respectively obtained for RF and colorimetric channel. Furthermore, a one-to-one colorimetric logic gate (RGB vs GLP concentrations) offered the possibility of intelligent monitoring of GLP. Summarily, the versatile sensor satisfied laboratory instrumental analysis and was further integrated as a smartphone-assisted platform to furnish a novel tactic for quick GLP monitoring, particularly for resource-constrained settings.
