Both sonodynamic therapy (SDT) and nanozymes can be considered specialized forms of catalysis, which are related to the electron structure. In this work, Fe doping was employed to introduce electronic localization and spin polarization toward porous MoO 2 nanospheres to improve the anticancer catalytic efficiency. All the Fe atoms are single-distributed to substitute for some lattice positions of Mo. Compared with MoO 2 @PEG, MoO 2 /Fe@PEG results in a 2.8-fold increase in ROS generation, which is attributed to spin polarization. This phenomenon enhances charge separation, increases conductivity, and promotes O₂ adsorption, thereby significantly improving the ROS production efficiency. Furthermore, MoO 2 /Fe@PEG also has superior mimic-catalase (CAT) activity (318,467 U g −1 ), which is even greater than that of natural catalase (220,834 U g −1 ). Compare with MoO 2 @PEG Fe doping increased the activity by 76.0 times because electron localization can decrease the free energy of the redox reaction. This novel CAT ability can convert endogenous H 2 O 2 into O 2 , alleviating tumor hypoxia and increasing ROS production. Notably, MoO₂/Fe@PEG also mimics GSH oxidase and NADPH oxidase (NOX) activities to consume GSH and restrain its regeneration at the same time, contributing to oxidative stress. The synergistic effects of SDT and multiple enzymes not only exhibit potent tumor inhibition but also elicit a robust immune response to prevent metastasis and recurrence.

Graphical Hollow can you go? Hollow MoO 2 /reduced graphene oxide (MoO 2 /rGO) sub-microsphere composites have been fabricated through a simple hydrothermal approach followed by heat treatment. When employed as an anode material for potassium-ion batteries, the as-synthesized MoO 2 /rGO composite deliver an initial charge specific capacity of 367.2 mAh g −1 at 50 mA g −1 , and its reversible capacity is 218.9 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles. Hollow MoO 2 /reduced graphene oxide (MoO 2 /rGO) sub-microsphere composites have been fabricated through a simple hydrothermal approach followed by a heat treatment process. When employed as an anode material for potassium-ion batteries, the as-synthesized MoO 2 /rGO composite can deliver an initial charge specific capacity of 367.2 mAh g −1 at 50 mA g −1 , and its reversible capacity is 218.9 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles. Even when cycled at 500 mA g −1 , a high charge specific capacity of 104.2 mAh g −1 is achieved after 500 cycles. The excellent cycling capability and rate performance may be ascribed to the synergistic effects of the reduced graphene oxide and the hollow MoO 2 spheres, which can increase the electrical conductivity of the composite, as well as resisting the strain arising from the repeated discharge–charge processes. These results indicate that the MoO 2 /rGO hollow sphere composites are promising negative electrode materials for potassium-ion batteries.

Research on deep-tissue photothermal therapy (PTT) in the near-infrared II (NIR-II, 1000–1350 nm) region has bloomed in recent years, owing to higher maximum permissible exposure and deeper tissue penetration over that in the near-infrared I (NIR-I, 650–950 nm) region. However, more details need to be uncovered to facilitate a fundamental understanding of NIR-II PTT. Herein, a tumor-targeted therapeutic nanosystem based on NIR-responsive molybdenum oxide (MoO 2 ) nanoaggregates was fabricated. The photothermal conversion capabilities of MoO 2 in the NIR-I and II regions were investigated step by step, from a simple tissue phantom to a three-dimensional cellular system, and further to a tumor-bearing animal model. NIR-II laser exhibited a lower photothermal attenuation coefficient (0.541 at 1064 nm) in a tissue phantom compared with its counterpart (0.959 at 808 nm), which allows it to be more capable of deep-tissue PTT in vitro and in vivo . Depth profile analysis elucidated a negative correlation between the microstructural collapse of tumor tissue and the penetration depth. Moreover, the depth-related tumor ablation was also studied by Raman fingerprint analysis, which demonstrated the major biochemical compositional disturbances in photothermal ablated tumor tissues, providing fundamental knowledge to NIR-II deep-tissue photothermal therapy.

Cobalt-modified molybdenum dioxide nanoparticles highly dispersed on nitrogen-doped carbon nanorods (Co–MoO 2 /NCND), are synthesized from anilinium trimolybdate dihydrate nanorods, for the performance improvement of microbial fuel cell based on a mixed bacterial culture . Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the as-synthesized Co–MoO 2 /NCND exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity for the charge transfer on anode, providing the cell with a maximum power density of 2.06 ± 0.05 W m −2 , which is strikingly higher than the bare carbon felt anode (0.49 ± 0.04 W m −2 ). The excellent performance of Co–MoO 2 /NCND is ascribed to the increased electronic conductivity of carbon nanorods by N-doping, the high ability of MoO 2 to enrich electroactive bacteria, as demonstrated by high-throughput sequencing, and the enhanced activity of MoO 2 by Co-modifying toward redox reactions in electroactive bacteria. This report provides a new concept of anode electrocatalyst fabrications for the application of microbial fuel cells in electricity generation and wastewater treatment .

Facile fabrication of high-performance catalyst based on low-cost metals for sustainable hydrogen evolution is still a matter of cardinal significance. However, synthetic approaches for electrocatalyst are usually complicated and the yields are often low. Herein, we report a one-step simple method for the large-scale synthesis of Co/Ni-MoO 2 composite as efficient and stable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst to drive 10 mA cm −2 current density with a low overpotential of 103 mV in basic media. Co-MoO 2 and Ni-MoO 2 were also prepared using this method with overpotential of 137 and 130 mV, respectively, to gain the same current density. These results indicate that this facile synthesis approach is of great practical importance as it can be easily used for large-scale preparation of electrocatalysts in industry.

Intended to investigate the alternative to the traditional Haber−Bosch process for generating ammonia, electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NRA) ensures a lower energy path and decentralized manner. Inspired by the nitrate reductase, we propose two Mo-based electrocatalysts with different Mo valences: MoO 2 -C nanoball-flower (MoO 2 -C NBF) with Mo (IV) sites and MoO 3 -C nanoball-flower (MoO 3 -C NBF) with Mo (Ⅵ) sites. The theoretical prediction reveals that the Mo (IV) sites have an enhanced catalytic activity and selectivity to ammonia rather the Mo (Ⅵ) sites. Similarly, the experimental results show that the MoO 2 -C NBF exhibits a superior NH 3 yield (109.28 µmol h −1 cm −2 ) and Faraday Efficiency (99.05 %). This work sheds light on the structure–activity relationship between valence state with NRA activity and paves the way for design and mechanism study of the Mo-based NRA electrocatalyst for the further development of sustainable NH 3 synthesis.

It is highly challenging to develop efficient catalysts for selective oxidation of p-chlorotoluene (PCT) into p-chlorobenzaldehyde (PCB) as PCB easily undergoes over-oxidation. Herein, a new electrochemical strategy was developed for selective oxidation of PCT with high selectivity toward PCB. A self-standing molybdenum phosphide (MoP) anode was directly synthesized on carbon cloth with the assistance of polyvinyl pyrrolidone. The as-synthesized MoP anode with 3D network structure, exhibits the selectivity of 91.4% toward PCB at the conversion of 75.6% in acetonitrile solution containing 0.1 M Bu 4 NClO 4 . During electrochemical oxidation, molecular oxygen-induced transformation of MoP into MoO 2 initiates the activation of PCT into ClC 6 H 5 CH 2 + . The ClC 6 H 5 CH 2 + reacts with molecular O 2 over electrode surface, producing the product of PCB. This work offers a promising strategy to achieve selective oxidation of C H bond based on electrochemical environment.

Recently, MoO 2 has been widely studied as an anode material owing to its high theoretical capacity and stability. In this study, nano-sized MoO 2 is successfully fabricated on three-dimensional porous carbon (3DPC) using a simple hydrothermal method followed by calcination . The composite exhibits higher surface area (171.6 m 2 g −1 ) than that of bulk MoO 2 (81.4 m 2 g −1 ). For the first time, the novel MoO 2 /3DPC composite is tested in both sodium and potassium ion batteries . The MoO 2 /3DPC composite exhibits improved electrochemical performance than that of bulk MoO 2 powder. In Na + half cells, the specific charge capacity in the first cycle of the MoO 2 /3DPC composite at 0.1 A g −1 is ∼463 mAh g −1 and a reversible capacity of ∼367 mAh g −1 can be maintained after 200 cycles. In K + half cells, the initial charge capacity is ∼350 mAh g −1 at 0.05 A g −1 . In addition, a reversible charge capacity of as high as 213 mAh g −1 can be maintained after 200 cycles. The synergistic effect of 3DPC and nano-sized MoO 2 improves the electrochemical performance. The unique 3D structure of porous carbon can increase the electrical conductivity and alleviate the absolute stress/strain. Results demonstrate that the MoO 2 /3DPC composite is one of the promising candidates for Na + /K + storage.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are considered as the candidate for the upcoming large-scale energy storage systems. However, transition-metal oxides still have the problem of insufficient utilization of active sites, mainly signified by the low practical capacity in long cycles. Here, the composite (MoO2@Mo2C/C) of Mo2C crystals in situ grown in N-doped carbon nanobundles (N-CNBs) with MoO2 particles on their surface is designed by self-polymerization and two-step calcination. Through a series of characterizations and tests, it is found that the N-CNBs endow the composite with improved conductivity and reinforced structural stability and effectively alleviates the volume expansion and structural collapse of MoO2 particles. The high integration of Mo2C crystals with MoO2 particles/N-CNBs (Mo2C/C) further enhances the charge-transfer ability and structural stability for the composite. Importantly, the storage sites of MoO2 particles and Mo2C crystals are gradually activated during sodium-ion storage, significantly improving the effective capacity in the long cycles. After 8000 cycles at 5.0 A g–1, the reversible capacity of MoO2@Mo2C/C as a SIB anode gradually increases from 126.2 to 419.1 mAh g–1, with a capacity retention of up to 332.4%. This study fully demonstrates the potential advantages of metal carbides in energy storage and can provide a good reference for the development of metal ion batteries.

With a huge amount of waste liquid crystal displays (LCDs) generated annually, their proper recycling raises continuous concern to realize pollution control (heavy metal and liquid crystal) and resource recovery (indium). However, due to their multi-metal feature, traditional hydrometallurgy lacks of sufficient selectivity, which makes the recycling route lengthy, costly, and generate more waste. Electrodeposition acts as a promising technique for selective metal extraction from multi-metal system due to its high selectivity and electron as clean reagent. To fully develop its application in metal recovery, stepwise Cu/MoO 2 and In electrodeposition from In-Cu-Mo-Fe waste LCD leachate is explored in depth. Electrochemical behavior analysis shows Cu and MoO 2 can be first electrodeposited for their higher electroreduction potential. Cl - plays a key role in accelerating indium electroreduction kinetics, which largely shortens the extraction time without the sacrifice of current efficiency . This accelerating effect is attributed to the increased concentration of electroactive species or collision frequency . Under optimized condition, 99.41% of indium (> 99% purity) can be electrodeposited within 13 h with high current efficiency. This study provides a cleaner approach for waste LCDs recycling and gives implications for the potential application of electrochemical technique in e-waste recycling.

Comprehensive Summary The selective electrooxidation of methanol to formate is a kinetically complex process involving multiple intermediates ( e.g ., *CH 3 O, *CHO, *OH), whose adsorption energies are difficult to regulate simultaneously. Here, we report a conceptually new electric-field-directed relay catalysis strategy based on a Ni 4 Mo/MoO 2 Mott-Schottky heterojunction. Using a combination of UPS, XPS, and XAFS, we demonstrate that the built-in electric field (BIEF) drives directional electron transfer from metallic Ni 4 Mo to semiconducting MoO 2 , creating spatially separated electron-deficient Ni sites and electron-rich MoO 2 interfaces. Operando FTIR and Raman spectroscopy directly visualize the dynamic evolution of intermediates, revealing a relay mechanism: Ni sites promote *CH 3 O adsorption and C–H/O–H bond cleavage, while MoO 2 enhances *OH supply to accelerate *CHO oxidation. DFT calculations confirm that this BIEF-mediated spatial decoupling lowers the energy barrier of the potential-determining step (*CHO → *HCOOH) from 1.96 eV (Ni 4 Mo) to only 0.76 eV. Consequently, the obtained catalyst achieves a peak current density of 345.2 mA·cm –2 with >97% Faradaic efficiency for formate. This work establishes a new paradigm for designing heterojunction electrocatalysts that leverage interfacial electric fields to orchestrate multi-step reaction pathways with high selectivity.

The practical implementation of lithium‑sulfur (Li S) batteries is severely hindered by the polysulfide shuttle effect and sluggish conversion kinetics. Herein, we designed and fabricated a heterostructured MoO 2 /Mo 2 C composite anchored on N-doped carbon microspheres (MoO 2 /Mo 2 C@NC) as a multifunctional separator coating. The built-in electric field formed at the MoO 2 /Mo 2 C interface drives electron redistribution, which not only strengthens the chemical anchoring of polysulfides on the polar MoO 2 surfaces but also accelerates their catalytic conversion on the conductive Mo 2 C domains. This synergistic adsorption-catalysis mechanism effectively suppressed shuttle behavior and enhanced liquid-to-solid transformation kinetics. As a result, Li S batteries equipped with the MoO 2 /Mo 2 C@NC-modified separator exhibited remarkable rate capability (670 mAh g −1 at 2C) and long-term cycling stability (approximately 515 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles). This work elucidates the critical role of interfacial electronic modulation in polysulfide regulation and provides a rational heterostructure design strategy for high-energy-density Li S batteries.
