Fe3Co nanoparticles embedded carbon nanotube complex as effective bifunctional electrocatalysts for rechargeable zinc-air batteries

Jifa Dong,Yaming Pang,Denise Bildan,Lu Xing,Xiaoteng Liu,Xiangqun Zhuge,Zhanhui Yuan,Yurong Ren,Dan Liu,Weiwei Lei,Kun Luo

Fe 3 Co nanoparticles have been successfully embedded within ZIF-8 derived carbon nanotube complex using a simple solvent-heated self-assembly-pyrolysis strategy, it acts as an efficient ORR/OER bifunctional electrocatalyst and showed outstanding performance of excellent catalytic activity for ORR (E 1/2  = 0.87 V at 0.1 M KOH) and OER (the overpotential at 10 mA cm −2 is 390 mV at 1 M KOH). Density functional theory (DFT) demonstrates that the introduction of iron and cobalt atoms significantly impacted on the adsorption energies of the reactive intermediates. In particular, the combination of cobalt and iron exhibited significantly enhanced ORR/OER activities, revealing an enhanced effect of synergistic interaction of FeCo site for bifunctional properties. It is used as Fe 3 Co 1 −NC in aqueous zinc-air battery (ZAB) and exhibited a high open-circuit voltage of 1.52 V, power density of 189.8 mW cm −2 , and long cycle durability of 400 h. Flexible ZABs assembled exhibit high power density (81.59 mW cm −2 ) and long cycling durability (90 h).

MOF-derived NiCo2S4/FeS heterostructures with built-in electric field for enhanced electrooxidation in freshwater/ brine /ethanol/methanol

Jiapeng Wang,Hua-Bin Yuan,Yongxuan Xiang,Lili Xing,Xinpeng Chen,Yifeng Wang,Jiazhuang Chen,Guoqiang Chen,Tieling Xing

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER), as a half-reaction of water decomposition, has a high theoretical overpotential. Therefore, the development of electrocatalysts with high OER performance is favorable for electrolytic hydrogen production. In situ growth of nanomaterials on conductive substrates is an effective strategy for the preparation of electrocatalysts. In this work, we grew Ni/Co bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOF) on carbon cloth substrates and successfully constructed a robust NiCo 2 S 4 /FeS@CC electrocatalyst through a MOF derivatization strategy. This electrocatalyst can be used for efficient and robust OER performance. MOF-derived NiCo 2 S 4 /FeS has the advantage of a porous heterostructure and multicomponent with many active sites and faster charge transfer rate, while sulfur doping greatly improves the OER performance. The current density of this self-supported heterogeneous material in alkaline freshwater reaches up to 10 mA cm −2 with an overpotential of only 238 mV. NiCo 2 S 4 /FeS@CC exhibited good OER performance in alkaline brine with an overpotential of only 241 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . We speculate that this is due to the generation of a negatively charged SO 4 2− anionic layer on the catalyst surface during the electrooxidation process, which effectively avoids Cl − corrosion. And both conditions demonstrate excellent long time stability. Additionally, we succeeded in further reducing the onset potential and energy consumption by adding ethanol or methanol to the electrolyte. This work provides an effective method to improve the OER performance of MOF-derived transition metal electrocatalysts for hydrogen production from electrolytic water.

In Situ Growth of CoFe Bimetallic MOFs on S-Mxene/NF Composite Substrate as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for OER

Yunyun Xie,Guanghua Liu,Zongwang Rao,Zhifang Xu,Jun Zhu,Chao Jiang,Yulong Yang,Zhiwen Hu,Qibing Chang

Fabricating an inexpensive and efficient electrocatalyst for the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an alkaline medium is crucial for renewable energy generation. In this work, nickel foam (NF) modified with few-layer or single-layer MXene (S-MXene) was used as a substrate to prepare an independent, self-supporting composite electrode for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysis. CoFe bimetallic MOF nanosheets were grown in situ on composite substrates by electrodeposition. Compared to multilayer MXene, S-MXene has a larger specific surface area and interlayer spacing, making it an ideal material for enhancing the conductivity of the electrode or serving as a supporting matrix. As an intermediate material, S-MXene can not only reduce the charge transfer resistance of the electrode and improve the active sites but also enhance the structural stability of the electrode, significantly improving the catalytic activity and long-term electrolysis stability of the electrode. The improved CoFe NSs@S-MXene/NF composite electrode delivers a current density of 10 mA cm–2 at a low overpotential value of only 191 mV in 1.0 M KOH, along with an ultralow Tafel slope of 31 mV dec–1. Additionally, the composite electrode exhibits outstanding stability for 24 h during OER at various current densities. This work innovatively uses S-MXene as a base material and develops a highly efficient new type of OER electrode. This novel strategy can serve as a reference for the modification of other electrode materials and expand the application of MXene in the field of water splitting.

Boosting the OER via the metal–support interaction and H-bond network: amorphous RuOx on fluorinated Ruddlesden–Popper perovskites

Ziye Feng,Zijie Peng,Yang Xu,Ming Zhang,Junfang Cheng

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is central to water electrolysis for green hydrogen production, where the development of efficient, stable, and cost-effective catalysts remains a key challenge. Ruthenium (Ru)-based catalysts are highly promising for OER, yet their practical deployment is limited by poor stability and low atomic utilization. Here, we report a fluorination-assisted loading strategy to fabricate an amorphous@crystalline composite catalyst, in which amorphous RuOx active species are anchored onto a fluorine-modified Ruddlesden–Popper (R-P) perovskite support (La1.2Sr0.8Ni0.6Fe0.4O4+δFy) to form the catalyst denoted as RuOx@LSNF-F. Fluorination induces robust metal–support interactions via electronegativity differences, stabilizing Ru4+ to balance the activity and stability while constructing an ordered hydrogen-bond network and optimizing the surface wettability. Electrochemical tests in 1.0 M KOH confirm the exceptional OER performance of RuOx@LSNF-F, which achieves an overpotential of 287 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a Tafel slope of 75 mV dec−1, and a double-layer capacitance of 3.7 mF cm−2 while maintaining stable operation for over 100 h, outperforming its non-fluorinated counterpart, the pristine support, and other benchmark Ru-based catalysts. Mechanistic studies reveal that the exceptional performance arises from the synergistic coupling of the adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) and lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM), enabled by the fluorination-engineered interface, while a hydrogen bond network is enhanced on the amorphous RuOx layer to accelerate deprotonation and improve the surface wettability. This work presents a strategy for designing high-performance perovskite-based OER catalysts and advances the understanding of their structure–activity relationships.

Fabrication of a eutectic high-entropy alloy bulk electrode with balanced activity and stability for OER via surface reconstruction

Si-Cheng Zhong,Jia Li,Hao-Ran Liu,Zhe Cui,Guang-Run Tian,Fa-Chang Zhao,Zhong-Hong Zhou,Hong-Fei Jiao,Dan-Yang Liu,Jie-Fu Xiong,Li-Chen Wang,Jun Xiang,Fu-Fa Wu,Rong-Da Zhao

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in electrochemical water splitting has always been a key bottleneck restricting efficient hydrogen production. An ideal electrocatalyst must not only exhibit high catalytic activity but also possess excellent stability, which is an equally crucial core indicator. Therefore, developing electrocatalysts that simultaneously achieve both high activity and long-term stability is of great significance. In this study, we successfully prepared a bulk high-entropy alloy electrode with a fully eutectic structure using arc melting technology. By adjusting the relative ratios of Cr and Mo elements, we not only optimized the intrinsic catalytic activity of the electrode but also observed a unique "performance improvement over time" phenomenon during prolonged stability tests. The dense eutectic structure of the electrode provides an ideal environment for electronic interactions among multiple metal atoms. During CV activation, the applied voltage drives the dissolution of the "unstable" IMC phase in the electrode. The dissolution of the Mo-rich phase and the leaching of Cr ions enhance the degree of surface reconstruction, leading to the formation of active high-valence oxygen-containing species, thereby promoting the enhancement of OER performance. After activation via cyclic voltammetry (CV), the Cr10Mo06-A electrode exhibited the most remarkable performance improvement, requiring only an overpotential of 380 mV to achieve a current density of 400 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the electrode demonstrated continuous and stable operation for nearly 500 h at a high current density of 500 mA cm −2 , successfully achieving a synergy between high activity and outstanding stability.

Boron engineering enables enhanced ORR/OER activity of Ni2P/Co2P heterojunctions anchored on hierarchical carbon for Zn-air batteries

Yuanliang Yuan,Xiaocong Zhong,Xiangming Xiong,Hongxuan Xie,Ruixiang Wang,Zhifeng Xu,Xing Ou

Developing bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts with excellent activity and durability is critical for scaling rechargeable zinc–air batteries (ZABs). Herein, we propose an integrated “etching–doping–phosphorization/carbonization” route to synthesize Ni 2 P/Co 2 P heterojunctions anchored on B,N,P co-doped carbon (Ni 2 P/Co 2 P-NPBC). Firstly, boric acid etching of the ZIF(Zn, Co, Ni) generates a bird-nest-like porous framework and simultaneously introduces boron; subsequent phosphorization/carbonization at 1000 °C yields Ni 2 P/Co 2 P nanocrystals uniformly anchored on the B, N, P co-doped carbon. It is confirmed that the carbon framework exhibits abundant defects and contains B, N, and P atoms chemically bonded to the matrix. This structure possesses a high surface area and a through-pore network, which ensure the exposure of active sites and facilitate rapid mass transport. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that boron doping markedly decreases charge density and upshifts the d-band center of Co sites in the Ni 2 P/Co 2 P heterojunction (from −1.26 to −0.87 eV), thereby raising the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) limiting potential (from 0.34 to 0.69 V) and lowering the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) theoretical overpotential (from 0.89 to 0.54 V). Benefiting from these features, Ni 2 P/Co 2 P-NPBC in alkaline media delivers an ORR half-wave potential of 0.88 V (vs. 0.85 V for 20% Pt/C) and an OER overpotential of 264 mV at 10 mA cm −2 (vs. 308 mV for RuO 2 ). A lab-fabricated ZAB achieves an open-circuit voltage of 1.586 V, a peak power density of 180.8 mW cm −2 , a specific capacity of 816.2 mAh g −1 , an energy density of 1159.0 Wh kg Zn −1 , and 600 h stable cycling.

Enhancing OER Electrocatalytic Performance via Configurational Entropy-Tuned Formation of Short-Range Ordered Quantum Dots in Medium-Entropy Compounds

Qingqing Cai,Rui Xu,Tao Wang,Lengyuan Niu,Yinyan Gong,Can Li

Medium-entropy compounds (MECs) have attracted significant interest thanks to their exceptional mechanical, physical and chemical properties, which are associated with their unique atomic structures. In this study, we enhanced the performance of MECs by optimizing their configurational entropy, leading to the formation of abundant quantum dots (QDs) and improved catalytic activity. This structural optimization not only adjusted electronic properties but also boosted catalytic performance and stability in oxygen evolution reactions (OER). MEC-Fe 2.0 catalyst demonstrated a low overpotential and outstanding long-term stability compared to others. Density functional theory simulations revealed that the incorporation of Co and Ni atoms increased the configurational entropy and facilitated the formation of short-range ordered QDs. This modification effectively lowered the chemical activity of Fe site, contributing to the enhanced catalytic performance. This design approach provides a promising strategy for advancing MEC, offering a pathway to improve their catalytic efficiency for various applications.

Hetero-structured noble metal-free high-entropy alloy CrFeCoNiCu/Mn-based oxide for highly efficient ORR/OER bifunctional catalysis

Qing Chen,Xinyu Zou,Ling Shi,Maocong Hu,Mao Peng,Zhenhua Yao

While bifunctional electrocatalysts enabling both oxygen reduction (ORR) and oxygen evolution (OER) reactions are recognized as pivotal chemical steps for next-generation energy devices, their practical implementation persists as a formidable scientific challenge. In this study, hetero-structured catalyst (CrFeCoNiCu/Mn 3 O 4 /MnO/NC) was successfully synthesized in situ containing both high-entropy alloy and spinel manganese-based oxide by a simple heat treatment process while two control samples (CrFeCoNiCu/Mn 3 O 4 /NC and CrFeCoNiCu/NC) were also prepared. It exhibited excellent catalytic performance and stability for both ORR and OER compared with commercial Pt/C and RuO 2 catalysts. The superior bifunctional performance was further observed with the overpotential gaps (ΔE gap ) of the three electrodes being 0.634 V, 0.655 V, and 0.698 V, respectively, which were lower than those of the combination of RuO 2 and Pt/C at 0.723 V. The enhanced catalytic performance was subsequently corroborated by density-functional theory (DFT). This study proposes an alternative method for the synthesis and design of high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Simultaneous regulation of thermodynamic and kinetic behavior on FeN3P1 single-atom configuration by Fe2P for efficient bifunctional ORR/OER

Enze Zhu,Chaoyang Shi,Jie Yu,Haodong Jin,Linxiang Zhou,Xikun Yang,Mingli Xu

Single-atom catalysts have been extensively researched in electrocatalytic oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR/OER) due to their tunable coordination environment. However, the linear scaling relationship (LSR) of oxygen intermediate adsorption energies imposes limitations in simultaneously enhancing ORR/OER. Herein, a unique asymmetrically coordinated FeN 3 P 1 single-atom configuration coupled by Fe 2 P nanoparticle is synthesized via a prefabricated Fe-N/P coordination strategy. The accentuated structural distortion induced by Fe 2 P can effectively break the LSR, lowering the energy barriers for ORR/OER. Kinetically, a modulation of OH − concentration by Fe 2 P on the catalytic interface was identified by finite element simulation and molecular dynamics simulation, which can positively facilitate ORR/OER kinetics. The obtained Fe 2 P@FeN 3 P 1 -NC catalyst exhibits excellent bifunctional ORR/OER (∆E = 0.65 V) and a promising application in zinc-air battery. This work provides a valuable insight into simultaneous regulation of thermodynamic and kinetic behavior by tailored structure distortion and enriched surface ions for ORR/OER.

NiMoFeO and its derived composite material as highly efficient and robust OER and HER catalysts for intermittent water electrolysis

Rufei Zhang,Qiaoxi Liu,Lili Zhou,Linan Wang,Linting Cheng,Ao Xie,Haijun Xu,Zhiqun Bai,Yang Tang,Pingyu Wan

Sustainable water electrolysis powered by renewable energy requires cost-efficient, effective, and robust catalysts. This study utilizes NiMoFeO and its nitrogen-doped carbon-coated (NC) derivatives NiMoFe@NC, as advanced OER and HER catalysts, respectively. The derivative fabrication not only simplifies catalyst synthesis but also notably enhances the stability of the HER catalyst through carbon coating. The outstanding OER performance of NiMoFeO is attributed to high-valence metals, while the enhanced HER activity of NiMoFe@NC arises from synergies effect from NiFe and MoO 2 . At 10 mA cm −2 , NiMoFeO showcased a low OER overpotential of 197 mV, and NiMoFe@NC displayed an extremely low HER overpotential of 8 mV. At 100 mA cm −2 and 27 °C, the NiMoFeO(+)//NiMoFe@NC(−) exhibited a voltage of 1.69 V, outperforming the RuO₂(+)//Pt/C (−) (1.77 V). Notably, over 1000 cycles of repetitive ON/OFF electrolysis, the voltage of NiMoFeO(+)//NiMoFe@NC(−) merely increased 0.01 V, confirming the exceptional potential of these catalysts for hydrogen production compatible with renewable energy.

Strategic Design for High-Efficiency Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) Catalysts by Triggering Lattice Oxygen Oxidation in Cobalt Spinel Oxides

Qingming Deng,Hui Li,Ke Pei,Lok Wing Wong,Xiaodong Zheng,Chi Shing Tsang,Honglin Chen,Wenqian Shen,Thuc Hue Ly,Jiong Zhao,Qiang Fu

High-efficiency catalysts with refined electronic structures are highly desirable for promoting the kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and enhancing catalyst durability. This study comprehensively explores strategies involving metal doping and oxygen vacancies for enhancing the acidic OER catalytic activity of Co3O4. Through extensive screening of 3d and 4d transition metals using density functional theory (DFT) simulations, we demonstrate that the incorporation of metal dopants and oxygen vacancies into Co3O4 potentially triggers a transition from the adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) to the lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM) in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). While the formation of the O–O bond in the intermediate *OOH poses challenges, a significantly reduced overpotential facilitates efficient conversion of O to O2 through the LOM in *OH and lattice oxygen. Additionally, we find that Mn doping can significantly improve the stability of the catalyst. Building upon the rationale above, we employed a dual doping strategy in subsequent experiments to enhance both the activity and stability. Our final design involved the codoping of Mn and Ru in Co3O4, along with an appropriate amount of oxygen vacancies. This catalyst demonstrates a low overpotential (η10 = 230 mV) compared to pure Co3O4 and maintains stable operation for over 120 h, representing a 12-fold increase. By exploring and harnessing the LOM, more efficient, stable, and cost-effective OER catalysts can be designed, providing crucial support for technologies such as water electrolysis in clean energy.

Electronic Modulation of the 3D Architectured Ni/Fe Oxyhydroxide Anchored N-Doped Carbon Aerogel with Much Improved OER Activity

Jiaxin Lu,Wenke Hao,Xiaodong Wu,Xiaodong Shen,Sheng Cui,Wenyan Shi

It remains a big challenge to develop non-precious metal catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in energy storage and conversion systems. Herein, a facile and cost-effective strategy is employed to in situ prepare the Ni/Fe oxyhydroxide anchored on nitrogen-doped carbon aerogel (NiFeOx(OH)y@NCA) for OER electrocatalysis. The as-prepared electrocatalyst displays a typical aerogel porous structure composed of interconnected nanoparticles with a large BET specific surface area of 231.16 m2·g−1. In addition, the resulting NiFeOx(OH)y@NCA exhibits excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 304 mV at 10 mA·cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 72 mV·dec−1, and excellent stability after 2000 CV cycles, which is superior to the commercial RuO2catalyst. The much enhanced OER performance is mainly derived from the abundant active sites, the high electrical conductivity of the Ni/Fe oxyhydroxide, and the efficient electronic transfer of the NCA structure. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the introduction of the NCA regulates the surface electronic structure of Ni/Fe oxyhydroxide and increases the binding energy of intermediates as indicated by the d-band center theory. This work provides a new method for the construction of advanced aerogel-based materials for energy conversion and storage. Keywords:carbon aerogel;Ni/Fe oxyhydroxide;nitrogen doping;OER;DFT calculations
