Complementary measurements resolved crosslinker-dependent rubber-core network states. • Rubber-core dynamics tracked mechanical and optical performance in PMMA/AIM. • DAM-based PMMA/AIM composites reached an impact strength of 7.2 kJ m −2 . • DAM-based PMMA/AIM composites retained 89.2% transmittance and 7.5% haze. Balancing toughness and optical transparency in poly(methyl methacrylate)/acrylic impact modifier (PMMA/AIM) composites requires control of the crosslinked rubber-core network. Gel content and equilibrium swelling alone cannot distinguish the dynamic states generated by structurally different crosslinkers. Triallyl cyanurate (TAC), diallyl maleate (DAM), allyl methacrylate (ALMA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) were used to tune poly(butyl acrylate-co-styrene) [P(BA-co-St)] rubber cores. Apparent effective crosslink density ( ν e,app ), swelling kinetics and segmental dynamics were evaluated together with particle size, morphology, grafting and dispersion. Although similar apparent crosslink densities were obtained, different crosslinkers generated distinct diffusion–relaxation behaviors and dynamic mechanical responses. Among the systems tested, DAM-based PMMA/AIM composites provided the most favorable balance, increasing impact strength to 7.2 kJ m −2 while retaining 89.2% transmittance and 7.5% haze. The enhanced segmental relaxation behavior, crosslinker-dependent swelling behavior, and enlarged fracture damage zone collectively indicate that the DAM-derived network promotes crack-tip deformation and deformation-assisted energy dissipation during fracture. These findings demonstrate that crosslinker selection provides an effective strategy for tuning rubber-core network dynamics and optimizing the toughness–transparency balance of impact-modified PMMA within the investigated formulation space. Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) have emerged as promising electrolytes for lithium metal batteries owing to their high ionic conductivity, mechanical flexibility, and reduced risk of electrolyte leakage. However, PAN-based GPEs still suffer from limited ion transport caused by the semi-crystalline structure of PAN chains. In this work, polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/lithium aluminum titanium phosphate (LATP)/lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) gel polymer electrolytes were fabricated via direct ink writing (DIW) 3D printing, where PMMA was introduced to regulate the PAN matrix and enhance Li+transport. The results reveal that PMMA incorporation effectively reduces PAN crystallinity, increases the amorphous fraction, and modifies the local functional-group environment of the polymer matrix, while LATP fillers further improve ionic transport and mechanical stability. The optimized PPM8:2 gel polymer electrolyte delivers a room-temperature ionic conductivity of 4.22 × 10−4S cm−1, a Li+transference number of 0.624, and an electrochemical stability window of 4.75 V. When applied in LiFePO4|Li batteries, it maintains a discharge capacity of approximately 150 mAh g−1after 100 cycles at 0.1 C with excellent rate capability and cycling stability. This work provides an effective approach to developing PAN-based gel polymer electrolytes for high-performance lithium metal batteries.

Electrochromic devices (ECDs) hold significant promise for applications in smart windows and flexible displays due to their tunable optical properties and low energy consumption. The electrolyte, serving as the critical ionic transport medium between the working and counter electrodes, fundamentally governs device stability, response kinetics, and operational lifetime. Herein, we report novel UV-crosslinked solid-state poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) electrolytes. The amorphous structure of PMMA enables the electrolyte to achieve relatively high ionic conductivity and excellent optical transparency, which, when combined with the mechanically robust three-dimensional network of PEGDA, further amplifies PMMA's advantages. This rationally designed electrolyte architecture achieves a remarkable combination of high ionic conductivity (0.045 mS cm-1), wide electrochemical stability window (2 V), exceptional optical transparency (transmittance >90%), and superior mechanical flexibility, and effectively addresses the film-forming challenges and interfacial instability issues associated with conventional polymer electrolytes. The fabricated ECDs (2 × 2 cm2) exhibit high optical contrast (ΔT = 39%), rapid response times (coloring/bleaching times of 0.5 s/0.6 s), high coloration efficiency (2200 cm2 C-1), and exceptional cycling stability (After 10,000 cycles, the ΔT decreased by only 6%, and the switching time remained approximately 1 s.), and excellent temperature stability. CYM trichromatic ECDs enable full-color display. Furthermore, the flexible devices maintain over 90% of their initial ΔT after 2000 bending cycles at a radius of 15 mm. They also demonstrate good compatibility with inkjet printing processes, and large-area devices (10 × 10 cm2) fabricated using this method exhibit excellent electrochromic performance. This work provides a viable pathway toward the practical realization of large-area, patterned, and flexible ECDs.

Bioinert poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is widely employed as a bone cement material in orthopedic and trauma surgery applications; however, its susceptibility to bacterial infection and bioinert nature limits its clinical applications. In this study, we developed a PMMA-based bone cement incorporating a silver nanoparticle-carbon dots (AgNP@CDs) nanocomposite (∼70 nm) at concentrations (2 wt %) with a Young’s modulus (324.74 ± 7.08 MPa)to simultaneously combat bacterial infections, minimize cytotoxicity, and support tissue regeneration. The CDs stabilize and functionalize AgNPs, improving their dispersion and bioavailability while enabling the controlled and sustained release of antimicrobial ions through incorporation with bone cement. The antibacterial efficacy of the composite was thoroughly evaluated, revealing its ability to disrupt bacterial cell membranes, generate reactive oxygen species and inhibit bacterial growth. These mechanisms collectively contribute to a significant reduction in bacterial growth of up to ∼ 90% in both in vitro and in vivo studies. The incorporation of AgNP@CDs ensures sustained antimicrobial activity, preventing bacterial colonization by controlling the leaching of Ag ions. Biocompatibility assessments showed that the PMMA composite (PMMA@2Ag-CDs) significantly improved cell proliferation, adhesion, and migration compared with pure PMMA bone cement. Additionally, histological analysis revealed that the PMMA group showed a fibrous layer thickness of 699 ± 35.32 µm, indicative of inflammation, while the PMMA@2Ag-CDs group reduced this thickness from 301.18 ± 22.42 µm on day 7 to 198.07 ± 15.21 µm on day 14, significantly decreasing inflammation. The PMMA@2Ag-CDs composite demonstrated better tissue integration, with organized collagen deposition and enhanced angiogenesis, indicating more efficient tissue regeneration. The reduced inflammation and improved tissue remodeling suggest that this composite promotes a more favorable tissue regeneration environment and minimizes complications. This study demonstrates that the PMMA@2Ag-CDs composite offers a promising solution for the prevention of infections and mitigation of inflammatory responses. Functionalization of bone cement through the incorporation of Ag nanoparticle-carbon dot nanocomposites is a promising strategy with potential practical applications in orthopedic and trauma surgery.

Engineering blend structure with interfacial distribution of nanoparticles is a cost-effective strategy for achieving materials with extraordinary performances. Herein, poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) homopolymer was sparsely grafted onto the surface of hydroxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-OH) by miniemulsion polymerization and such modified MWCNTs- g -PMMA were introduced into immiscible engineering blend of polycarbonate (PC) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to prepare conductive polymer composites (CPCs). With the help of the miscibility of PMMA with PC and PVDF, MWCNTs- g -PMMA were selectively located at the interface of co-continuous PC/PVDF blend, while MWCNTs-OH were distributed in the PC phase. The interfacial distribution and aggregation of MWCNTs- g -PMMA endowed the ternary nanocomposite with long-term stable excellent electrical conductivity and ultralow percolation threshold of 0.002 vol%.

High-energy insensitive energetic materials are currently a research focus. Octogen (HMX) is one of the best-performing nitramine explosives, but its poor crystal morphology causes high mechanical sensitivity, limiting its application. This study proposed a method combining spheroidization, nanosizing, and coating desensitization. Nano-SiO2and TiO2were used to modify methyl methacrylate (MMA), and HMX/PMMA composite energetic microspheres were successfully prepared with the assistance of an ultraviolet (UV) lamp for catalytic polymerization. Molecular dynamics simulations determined the optimal particle ratios, and the effects of modifier content on morphology, crystal form, thermal stability, mechanical properties, and static mechanical properties were experimentally investigated. The prepared HMX/PMMA/modifier microspheres exhibited uniform size, dense structure, excellent performance, and ideal coating. Thermal decomposition kinetics showed that the activation energy of HMX/PMMA/SiO2(0.75 wt% SiO2) increased by 79.86 kJ/mol and 27.55 kJ/mol compared with raw HMX and HMX/PMMA, respectively. Its impact sensitivity was 3.6 times that of raw HMX, and its friction sensitivity was twice that of raw HMX. Static mechanical analysis revealed that the compressive strength of HMX/PMMA/SiO2(0.75 wt% SiO2) and HMX/PMMA/TiO2(0.5 wt% TiO2) microspheres increased by 7.3 MPa and 6.1 MPa, respectively, over HMX/PMMA, indicating significant improvement. Overall, HMX/PMMA/SiO2and HMX/PMMA/TiO2microspheres prepared by photoinitiated emulsion polymerization exhibited excellent thermal stability and mechanical properties.

The surface treatment of carbon fibers (CFs) was carried out using a self-synthesized sizing agent. The effects of sizing agent on the surface of CFs and the interface properties of CF/polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) composites were mainly studied. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and static contact angle were used to compare and study the CFs before and after the surface treatment, including surface morphology, surface chemical element composition, and wettability of the surface. The influence of sizing agent on the mechanical properties of CF/PMMA resin composite interface was investigated. The results show that after sizing treatment, the CF surface O/C value increased by 35.1% and the contact angles of CF and resin decreased by 16.2%. The interfacial shear strength and interlayer shear strength increased by 12.6%.

The blue-emitting CsPbBr 3 quantum dots (QDs) have currently received widespread attention due to high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs), but their instability mainly caused by self-aggregation or environmental erosion (i.e. moisture and oxygen) should be solved to gain more progress in further application. This paper presented a feasible approach to high-quality blue-emitting CsPbBr 3 QDs-polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) films, in which PMMA provided a solid framework to protect CsPbBr 3 QDs by the chelation between C O and Pb 2+ ions, thus resulting in the stability of CsPbBr 3 QDs. The CsPbBr 3 QDs-PMMA films exhibited remarkable properties including water resistance, flexibility, deep-blue emission (465 nm), and comparatively high PLQY (45%). The blue LED fabricated by the films displayed a CIE coordinate (0.14, 0.10), which was corresponding to the standard blue CIE coordinate (0.14, 0.08) according to National Television System Committee (NTSC).

Aims: Microcapsules comprising of a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) shell and friction modifier (FM) core were prepared to reduce the friction and extend the service life of engine lubricating oil. Methods: Microcapsules containing both organic FM and molybdenum FM were produced via solvent evaporation technique. The friction coefficient, thermal stability, and chemical composition of microcapsules were investigated. Results: The incorporation of microcapsules in lubricating oil dramatically reduced the friction coefficient to be lower than that of virgin FM. Organic FM and molybdenum FM are compatible during the encapsulation process. The release of the FM inside the microcapsules was controllable by thermal degradation of polymeric shell at 150 °C or mechanical rupture at room temperature. Conclusions: This study provided a novel approach to improve the tribological properties of lubricating oil with long service life, facile fabrication and low cost and will find potential applications in lubrication industry for internal combustion engines.

The precise synthesis of acrylate derived from protocatechuic acid was reported for the first time via a simple two-step reaction route. Copolymerizing the monomer with methyl methacrylate in the presence of radical initiator gave the copolymers. The copolymer exhibited high glass transition temperature ( T g ) and thermostability, excellent ultraviolet-shielding efficiency and good dimensional stability. Moreover, the modified polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) also showed good mechanical properties while the transparency lightly decreased in visible light. The best results were obtained when the weight ratio of methyl methacrylate and protocatechuic acid -based acrylate was 1:1. In that case, the cured polymer showed T g of 159.6 °C and a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of 69.54 ppm/°C. The shielding rate of copolymer reached 99.38% in ultraviolet light (320–400 nm) and 82.56% in short-wave blue light (400–450 nm). These indicated that it may be applied to lenses, and this contribution would provide a new way for the conversion of bio-based glucose to the high-performance polymers.

The strong inorganic–organic composite was successfully fabricated by combination of the super stiff silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ) fibers and the leading flexible poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) by initiating free radical polymerization in batch. Hydroxylation of Si 3 N 4 fibers made it feasible to modify the fibers with γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-MPS), which was identified as linkage between Si 3 N 4 and PMMA through C C bond. The Si 3 N 4 –PMMA composite had a reduced modulus of 4.72 GPa, with the improvement of at least 52% to the matrix. The observation on morphology and structure of the composite demonstrated that the inorganic fibers were uniformly dispersed in the polymer matrix, and most importantly, they were well cross-linked by chemical bonds and van der Waals. The thermal stability of Si 3 N 4 –PMMA was raised with an increase in thermal decomposition and glass transition temperature. The composite with super mechanical properties and thermal stability may have potential applications in aerospace industry and civil engineering fields.

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is a widely used optical polymer due to its excellent transparency and durability. However, the sole methyl group shows pure PMMA low refractive index and low UV absorbility, and poor thermal stability. In this work, two comonomers phenyl methacrylate (PhMA) and adamantyl methacrylate (AdMA) were used for copolymerization with methyl methacrylate (MMA), and three copolymers P(AdMA-co-MMA), P(PhMA-co-MMA) and P(AdMA-co-PhMA-co-MMA) were prepared. They were characterised by FTIR , 1 H NMR, UV-Vis, ellipsometer , DSC , TG , and TG-MS, and the effects of phenyl and adamantyl substituents on the optical and thermal properties of PMMA were studied. It was found that phenyl played an important role in increasing the absorption and refraction of PMMA in the deep UV region (190–260 nm), while the glass transition temperature and thermal stability of PMMA were more affected by adamantyl than by phenyl. Introduction of phenyl and adamantyl substituents provided a method to tune the optical and thermal properties of PMMA as photoresist or antireflective coating for deep UV lithography.
