A three-dimensional graphene oxide (3DGO) support was synthesized via a formaldehyde-melamine resin-assisted hydrothermal condensation strategy, serving as a framework for the polyol-mediated in situ growth of ultrafine platinum–iron (PtFe) alloy nanoparticles to yield the PtFe/3DGO electrocatalyst. This facilitated a highly uniform dispersion of PtFe alloy particles with an average diameter of 1.87 ± 0.56 nm. XRD and HRTEM results consistently confirmed that Fe incorporation induced pronounced lattice contraction, as evidenced by the reduction in Pt (111) interplanar spacing from 0.226 to 0.219 nm, thereby confirming the formation of a highly alloyed PtFe structure. XPS analysis identified electronic redistribution in Pt 4f orbitals, confirming a downward migration of the d-band center driven by combined ligand and strain effects. The PtFe/3DGO catalyst exhibits exceptional ORR activity in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , with an onset potential of 1.1 V (vs. RHE) and a half-wave potential of 0.751 V, yielding a 31-mV positive shift relative to Pt/C. With an initial electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) of 122.2 m 2 ·g −1 Pt , PtFe/3DGO retains 51.2 m 2 ·g −1 Pt after 20,000 accelerated durability test (ADT) cycles, significantly outperforming the stability of Pt/C (which spans only 5000 cycles). This performance enhancement can be largely ascribed to the synergistic effect of three-dimensional spatial confinement and alloy-induced electronic modulation, providing possible insights for the rational design of high-efficiency electrocatalysts.

A calcium alginate hydrogel layer was ionically crosslinked on electrospun PTFE to form a Janus membrane. • A PVDF interlayer was introduced to improve interfacial adhesion. • The dense hydrogel layer provided a hydration barrier and molecular sieving functions. • The Janus membrane showed superior anti-wetting, anti-fouling and anti-scaling performance to that of pristine PTFE. Membrane distillation (MD) holds great promise for high-salinity wastewater treatment, yet membrane wetting, fouling, and scaling severely restrict its practical application. In this study, an electrospun polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) nanofibrous membrane was used as the hydrophobic substrate, a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) interlayer was introduced to enhance interfacial adhesion, and a hydrophilic calcium alginate hydrogel layer was constructed via one-side ionic crosslinking of sodium alginate with calcium chloride (SA-CaCl 2 ). Consequently, an SA-CaCl 2 /PVDF/PTFE Janus membrane with superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic asymmetric wetting characteristics was successfully prepared. The sodium alginate concentration (1 mg mL −1 ) and crosslinking time (5 min) were optimized, and the resulting JM-1-5 membrane possessed a dense, uniform, and firmly attached hydrophilic gel layer. Direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) evaluation showed that the membrane maintained a stable permeate flux (approximately 18 kg·m −2 ·h −1 ) and nearly 100% salt rejection when treating pure saline water, SDS-containing saline water, and oily simulated wastewater. In a long-term concentration experiment with 3.5 wt% NaCl, the JM-1-5 membrane operated stably for about 30 h and achieved a concentration efficiency of 73%, exhibiting significantly better anti-wetting, anti-fouling, and anti-scaling performance than the pristine PTFE membrane. Mechanistic analysis revealed that the hydration effect, size-exclusion effect, and high capillary pressure of the hydrophilic layer act synergistically to effectively inhibit contaminant adsorption and salt crystallization nucleation. This study provides a new approach for the design of high-performance composite membranes for membrane distillation. Download: Download high-res image (124KB) Download: Download full-size image

The preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO-PROX) in rich hydrogen is a highly appealing technology for removing trace amounts of CO in hydrogen purification. Nevertheless, the requirements for realizing both a wide optimal working temperature range and high stability under industrial operating conditions remain a significant challenge. Here, we proposed a strategy for designing robust PtFe bifunctional catalysts stabilized by silanol nests on dealuminated Beta zeolite. The silanol nests formed upon dealumination effectively anchored Fe species, which subsequently facilitated the co-localization of Pt with the Fe sites. As a result, highly dispersed Fe species were stabilized in conjunction with Pt ensembles, achieving 100 % CO conversion within a wide working temperature range of 25 °C to 180 °C. Furthermore, this catalyst also demonstrates exceptional stability, maintaining 100 % CO conversion over 72 h of continuous CO-PROX operation under industrially relevant conditions (80 °C, in the presence of H 2 O and CO 2 ). Mechanistic investigations revealed that the high efficiency of O 2 utilization on the highly dispersed PtFe nanoparticles on dealuminated Beta zeolite not only promotes activity but also enhances stability for the CO-PROX reaction.

A novel method for preparing the superhydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) surface by doped copper (Cu) to alter microtexture (microscale warts) characteristics is proposed. Microscale warts are generated on the PTFE surface by thermal annealing. The present method achieves superhydrophobicity by adjusting Cu content to alter the morphology and distribution of microscale warts on the PTFE surface. As Cu content increases, the average area and percentage of microscale warts increase, but the density of microscale warts on the PTFE surface first increases and then decreases. An appropriate amount and size of microscale warts are obtained at 2.5 vol% Cu content. PTFE surface doped with 2.5 vol% Cu also has the best superhydrophobicity performance (water contact angle is 162.54°, water sliding angle is 5.90°).

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is a water-miscible, polar aprotic solvent extensively used in various industrial processes. However, its widespread use has led to the generation of large volumes of NMP-containing wastewater, which poses significant environmental and health concerns. In this study, a robust PTFE/ceramic composite membrane was developed for effective separation of water and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) using a solvent resistant membrane distillation (SR-MD) process. To address the challenge of PTFE infiltration into macroporous ceramic supports, a pine-needle-like TiO 2 interlayer was constructed via in-situ hydrothermal synthesis. This interlayer not only reduced surface macroporosity but also strengthened the interfacial bonding between the ceramic support and the PTFE layer by mechanical interlocking, while simultaneously preventing PTFE penetration into large pores of the support. Additionally, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were incorporated into the PTFE matrix to alleviate sintering-induced cracking and improve membrane mechanical properties. The resulting composite membrane exhibited a well-defined three-layer structure, low friction coefficient, excellent scratch resistance, and high interfacial integrity. The optimized membrane achieved high water flux (30 kg·m –2 ·h –1 ) and excellent NMP rejection (>96%) at 70 °C over prolonged operation. Vapor–liquid equilibrium analysis confirmed the selective permeability based on volatility differences between water and NMP. This study provides a practical and scalable strategy for constructing high-performance PTFE/ceramic composite membranes suitable for organic wastewater treatment under harsh conditions.

This study explores the effect of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets on the mechanical and energetic performance of polytetrafluoroethylene/aluminium (PTFE/Al) reactive composites for shielding applications. PTFE/Al mixtures with varying GO content (0–3%) were experimentally and numerically analysed. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated improved PTFE crystallinity and thermal stability with GO addition. Calorimetric bomb tests revealed a 13% increase in calorific power at 3% GO content. EXPLO5 modelling showed higher enthalpy and combustion heat under isobaric conditions but reduced energy release under isochoric conditions, suggesting a more condensed reaction. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed uniform dispersion of Al and GO within a fibrous PTFE matrix. Compression and split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) tests demonstrated enhanced stiffness, toughness, and energy absorption. This work reveals the dual role of GO, combining graphene’s lightweight, high-performance structure with reactive oxygen functional groups, investigated through both experimental andcomputational methods.

The complex composition of industrial waste oil poses a severe challenge to efficient separation and recycling, urgently necessitating the development of membrane materials that combine high separation efficiency, excellent high-temperature stability, and antifouling performance. In this paper, a carbon nanotube (CNT)/polydimethylsiloxane polytetrafluoroethylene hollow fiber membrane (PPHFM) was fabricated via the wet impregnation method. Results indicated that CNTs were uniformly dispersed within the PDMS matrix, synergistically constructing a hierarchically rough surface and endowing the membrane with superhydrophobic and superoleophilic properties. The optimized membrane pore structure conferred molecular sieving ability, achieving a separation efficiency of 94.32% for water-in-oil emulsified oil. Simultaneously, the membrane exhibited excellent permeation flux: the initial flux for kerosene reached 454.96 L–1 m–2 h–1 bar–1, and the flux for waste oil at 150 °C was 47.39 L–1 m–2 h–1 bar–1. The poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) reinforcement layer endowed the membrane with ultrahigh mechanical strength (tensile strength >450 MPa). The optimized CM-2 membrane (CNTs 2 wt %) exhibited outstanding antifouling properties and cycling stability: after 4 consecutive operational cycles, the flux recovery ratio remained at 81.8% in the high-temperature waste oil system; it maintained a high flux even after long-term operation with high-temperature waste oil. This study successfully fabricated a CNT/PPHFM material. This membrane can efficiently treat industrial waste oil and exhibits enhanced durability, demonstrating broad application potential in demanding environments.

The combustion efficiency and reactivity of aluminum (Al) particles, as a crucial component in solid propellants, are constrained by the inert oxide layer aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ). Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) can remove the oxide layer, however, carbon deposition generated during the reaction process still limits the reaction efficiency of Al/PTFE fuel. Here, a litchi-like Al/PTFE fuel with the nano-PTFE islands distributed on the Al particles surface is successfully designed, based on localized activation and synergistic reaction strategies, to solve the Al 2 O 3 layer and carbon deposition. This unique PTFE-coated structure can achieve localized activation of Al by surface etching, creating reaction channels, and exposing the active Al. Such a channel network promotes the circulation of fluorine and oxygen, stimulating the synergistic reactions of Al-F and Al-O and energy output. Regulating the PTFE content can maximize the elimination of carbon deposition and achieve the full combustion reaction of Al/PTFE. The maximum flame area and pressure output of the litchi-like Al/PTFE fuel increased by 241.9%, 734.7%, 118.4%, and 265.2%, respectively, compared with traditional physical mixture and core-shell structure Al/PTFE fuels. The localized activation and synergistic effects of litchi-like structure effectively transform carbon waste into a valuable resource, introducing a novel approach for the propellants.

In order to enhance the hydrophilicity of PTFE hollow fiber membrane, high concentration of polymer was needed during the modifying process, but this method resulted in severe pore blockage of hollow fiber membrane with reduced water flux. Herein, we resolve the above contradiction by using cross-linkable poly (vinylpyrrolidone -co- γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane) (P (VP- co- KH570)) as hydrophilic polymer and calcium chloride as sacrificial template. The enhanced hydrophilicity and chemical washing resistance of PTFE hollow fiber membrane were achieved by the highly hydrophilic PVP segments and highly crosslinking density contributed by hydrolysis and condensation of the KH570 segments, respectively. The template is embedded in the polymer network formed in the membrane pores, and after template removal the previously occupied pores are released for water transport, thereby minimizing the loss of water flux. The high water flux (1477.14 ± 16.11 L/(m 2 ·h)), superhydrophilicity (the water contact angle = 0°) and hydrophilic stability proved that PTFE hollow fiber membranes are successfully modified by the sacrificial template method. This work provides a facile strategy for designing hydrophilic PTFE hollow fiber membranes for water treatment.

Flexible thermal insulation membrane plays a key role in outdoor wear of human body and thermal management of electronic products. This study used electrospinning to prepare thermal insulation hollow silica/polytetrafluoroethylene (HSi/PTFE) fiber membranes. HSi were prepared using tetraethylorthosilicate as the silicon source and hydrothermal carbon spheres as templates. A spinning solution of PTFE containing the HSi was used to prepare fiber membranes. The heat transfer resistance of the fiber is improved by embedding HSi into the PTFE fiber, resulting to improved heat insulation capability of the fiber membrane. The influence of HSi content on the thermal insulation performance of PTFE fiber membrane was studied. When the HSi content was 5 %, the fiber membrane showed the lowest thermal conductivity (0.0197 W/(m·K)), which was not only lower than most fiber thermal insulation materials, but also had excellent tensile properties (tensile deformation capacity of 168 %), which was convenient for practical application. In addition, this kind of fiber membrane also has high hydrophobicity (water contact angle of 147°), effectively reducing the influence of moisture on thermal insulation performance. This work presents innovative prospects for the future advancement of thermal insulation materials.

During the hydrophilic modification of PTFE hollow fiber membranes, the modifying substances often block the pores upon crosslinking. This blockage can lead to unsatisfactory water flux, despite the enhanced hydrophilicity of the membranes. Herein, we proposed a miniemulsion template method to solve the above problems, where water soluble polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and crosslinking agent glutaraldehyde (GA) were selected to modify the PTFE membrane. The PTFE membrane was premoistened with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and then immersed in a miniemulsion template environment. The miniemulsion droplets and PVA macromolecules gradually diffused into the membrane pores and occupied the membrane voids to realize the displacement with IPA. The PVA macromolecules distributed around the miniemulsion droplets reacted with the crosslinking agent to form a crosslinked network that coated the membrane fibers. After removing the miniemulsion template, the occupied voids were released, thus providing channels for water transport and preventing pore blockage following the crosslinking of the modified substances. The modified PTFE membrane exhibits superior hydrophilicity and high water flux. The water flux can reach 1624.64 ± 20.82 L/(m 2 ·h) at the operating pressure of 0.04 MPa. After 16 days of soaking in strong acid (pH = 2), strong alkali (pH = 12), and a strong oxidizing agent (2000 ppm NaClO), the modified membrane retains its hydrophilic properties, demonstrating excellent chemical stability, better antifouling, and oil-water separation performance. Therefore, the modified PTFE hollow fiber membrane demonstrates significant potential for water treatment applications.

With the growing demand of energy storage techniques in carbon-neutral environments, vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) have emerged as outstanding systems for long-duration energy storage. Developing high-performance ion exchange membrane is essential for broad deployment of RFBs. In this work, a SPEEK/PTFE membrane is designed by incorporating polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) nanoparticles into sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membrane by bio-inspired polydopamine (PDA) bridge. PDA combines SPEEK membrane and hydrophobic PTFE nanoparticle tightly by its abundant functional groups. The ion selectivity of optimal SPEEK/PTFE-0.5 % membrane is 8.9 times greater than that of Nafion 115. Remarkably, VRFB with optimal SPEEK/PTFE-0.5 % membrane exhibits excellent battery performances including impressive columbic efficiency (CE, 99.5 %) and energy efficiency (EE, 86.3 %) at 100 mA cm −2 surpassing Nafion 115 (CE, 95.8 %; EE, 83.4 %). Besides, VRFB employing SPEEK/PTFE-0.5 % membrane demonstrates excellent cycling stability, with higher capacity retention (71.4 % after 300 cycles) compared to Nafion 115, indicating its capability of extended operation. This work illustrates that the design of PDA bridge in composite membrane is a useful approach for developing high-performance membranes in RFBs.
