Colorimetric aptasensor for Listeria monocytogenes detection using dual functional Fe3O4@MIL-100(Fe) with magnetic separation and oxidase-like activities in food samples

Du Juan,Li Zongshuang,Liu Kai,Guo Jiangli,Bai Yanhong

A novel colorimetric aptasensor assay based on the excellent magnetic responsiveness and oxidase-like activity of Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-100(Fe) was developed. Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-100(Fe) absorbed with aptamer and blocked by BSA served as capture probe for selective isolation and enrichment of Listeria monocytogenes  one of the most common and dangerous foodborne pathogenic bacteria. The aptamer absorbed on Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-100(Fe) was further used as signal probe that specifically binds with target bacteria conjugation of capture probe for colorimetric detection of Listeria monocytogenes , taking advantages of its oxidase-like activity. The linear range of the detection of Listeria monocytogenes was from 10 2 to 10 7  CFU mL −1 , with the limit of detection as low as 14 CFU mL −1 . The approach also showed good feasibility for detection of Listeria monocytogenes in milk and meat samples. The spiked recoveries were in the range 81–114% with relative standard deviations ranging from 1.28 to 5.19%. Thus, this work provides an efficient, convenient, and practical tool for selective isolation and colorimetric detection of Listeria monocytogenes in food. Graphical Abstract

Ex-situ catalytic microwave-assisted gasification of sewage sludge over Ni-modified MIL-100 (Fe) derived catalysts: Tar reforming for hydrogen-rich syngas

Mingtao Hu,Huiwen Wu,Wenyi Deng,Lingyu Tai,Xuerong Zheng,Weihao Li,Yaxin Su,Run Xu

Catalytic tar reforming is a pivotal technology for upgrading syngas quality during sewage sludge gasification. In this study, a series of Ni-modified carbon-based catalysts (x%NiFe/C) were synthesized using MIL-100(Fe) as a precursor to investigate the impact of Ni-loading on the catalytic performance for tar reforming. Detailed characterizations, including XRD, XPS, Raman, and NH 3 -TPD, revealed that the introduction of Ni species significantly tailored the physicochemical properties of the catalysts. Specifically, the 3.3%NiFe/C catalyst exhibited the optimal specific surface area and pore structure, facilitating efficient mass transfer. Characterization results confirmed the formation of Ni-Fe alloy, which not only modulated the surface electronic density to optimize acidity but also enhanced the dispersion of active sites. The interaction between Ni and Fe species effectively promoted the cleavage of C-C and C-H bonds in tar molecules while suppressing carbon deposition. Consequently, the 3.3%NiFe/C catalyst demonstrated superior catalytic activity and stability in the two-stage microwave-assisted gasification reforming process, achieving a syngas yield of 555 mg/g·SS, a tar conversion rate of 82.9%, and an H 2 concentration of 73.8 vol%. After ten cycles, the H 2 yield and concentration remained as high as 28.0 mmol/g·SS and 68.2 vol%, respectively. This work provides mechanistic insights into the design of MOF-derived carbon-supported catalysts for efficient SS gasification.

Three-Dimensional Hierarchical HRP-MIL-100(Fe)@TiO2@Fe3O4 Janus Magnetic Micromotor as a Smart Active Platform for Detection and Degradation of Hydroquinone

Jie Yang,Jia Li,Xiaohui Yan,Yangsai Lyu,Ningning Xing,Ping Yang,Peng Song,Min Zuo

A novel multifunctional Janus magnetic micromotor was designed and constructed by using MIL-100(Fe)@TiO2@Fe3O4 multicore–shells modified with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) as a smart active platform to realize detection and degradation of hydroquinone (HQ). The obtained micromotor showed a unique three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical architecture with highly exposed active sites and could autonomously move at a speed of 140 ± 7.0 μm·s–1 by O2 bubbles generated from the catalytic decomposition of H2O2 fuel. Benefiting from the combination of active self-propulsive motion, high peroxidase-like activity, tuned heterojunctions with matching band structures, and a 3D hierarchical structure, an effective platform involving dynamically sensitive detection and quick removal of HQ from water was established by using the multifunctional HRP-integrated MIL-100(Fe)@TiO2@Fe3O4 Janus micromotor. The proposed multifunctional Janus magnetic micromotor had advantages of simple and feasible fabrication, sensitive detection and effective photo-Fenton degradation of HQ in a wide pH range of 4–7, and magnetic recycling, revealing potential for environmental remediation applications.

Unravelling the functional role of two-dimensional metal organic framework interlayer for boosted nanofiltration performance

Hussain Sadam,Qin Shen,Qiangqiang Song,Yuqing Lin,Jing Wang,Dongyang Li,Guanying Dong,Yuandong Jia,Xueling Wang,Kecheng Guan,Hideto Matsuyama,Yatao Zhang

Tailor-made highly permeable and selective polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes are imperative for diverse aqueous applications such as seawater desalination, brine softening and wastewater treatment. Here we report a high-performance PA NF membrane having a 2D MIL-100 (Fe) nanoflakes intermediate layer with tortuous mass transfer channels and dense PA barrier layer with ultrathin thickness (25.7 nm) and wrinkled structure. The MIL-100 (Fe) nanosheets interlayer was deposited onto the support and then the interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction occurred on MIL-100 (Fe) interlayer. The MIL-100 (Fe) nanosheets interlayer affected the IP reaction by influencing the diamine monomers storage and diffusion behavior during IP procedure. By only altering the MIL-100 (Fe) nanosheets deposition amounts and monomers concentrations for IP, a series of PA nanofilms with governable membranes structures and crosslinking degree could be formed. The best-performing TFC NF membrane (PA_MIL_1.0) with improved separation performance demonstrated fascinating water permeance of 16.1 L m −2  h −1 bar −1 with greater salts selectivity (99.1 % and 97.8 % for Na 2 SO 4 and MgSO 4 , separately), about twice folds than the pristine PA membrane (8.1 L m −2  h −1 bar −1 ). This work displays an innovative method for the establishment of high-performance TFC NF membrane and deciphers new insights into the mechanisms of how the 2D nanoflakes interlayer dominate IP procedure and affect the ions sieving performance.

NiCo-ZIF Based Ternary MOFs Composite Material for High-Efficiency and Stable Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Chonglin Wang,Peng Gao,Xiang Yao,Xiaohui Sun,Hong Du

Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have been extensively utilized as catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their remarkable properties. To enhance electrocatalytic performance, the modifying MOF materials has emerged as a significant research area. In this study, we synthesized MIL-100(Fe), and MOF-74(Co) MOF materials on the surface of NiCo-ZIF using 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid as the ligand , successfully obtaining a ternary MOFs composite material designated as NiCo-ZIF@MM. Experimental results demonstrated that the NiCo-ZIF@MM composite formed a heterogeneous structure, which significantly enhanced electron transport efficiency and catalytic activity. Additionally, this novel material exhibits a larger electrochemical active surface area and excellent stability. Notably, the overpotential of NiCo-ZIF@MM is reduced to 190 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2. This study not only achieves effective modification of ZIF materials but also provides a new strategy for the development of highly efficient and stable MOF-based OER catalysts.

Fe-Based Metal–Organic Frameworks for Highly Selective Photocatalytic Benzene Hydroxylation to Phenol

Dengke Wang,Mengtao Wang,Zhaohui Li

Phenol is one of the most important chemicals in industry. One-step selective benzene hydroxylation is an attractive yet challenging method for phenol production, especially when such a reaction can be driven by solar energy. Herein, we reported that a highly selective benzene hydroxylation to phenol can be achieved over two Fe-based metal–organic frameworks [MIL-100(Fe) and MIL-68(Fe)] under visible light irradiations using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as an oxidant. An optimal benzene conversion of 30.6% was achieved with a H2O2:benzene ratio of 3:4 over MIL-100(Fe) after 24 h irradiations. ESR results and the kinetic studies suggested that a successful coupling of the photocatalysis of Fe–O clusters in Fe-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with a Fenton-like route is involved in this benzene hydroxylation process. The comparison of the reaction over MIL-100(Fe) and MIL-68(Fe) reveals that the structure of MOFs significantly influences the photocatalytic efficiency. Because the composition and the structure of MOFs are highly tunable, this study highlights the great potential of using Fe-based MOFs for photocatalytic benzene hydroxylation to form phenol, which may result in an economical, sustainable, and thus green process for phenol production.

Ni-Fe electronic reservoirs supported on MIL-100(Fe) for efficient removal of U(VI) from aqueous solutions through a synergistic reduction-adsorption mechanism

Linkai He,Xingqiang Wu,Yun Tian,Yixin Pan,Faquan Wu

The release and dispersion of uranium during mining activities and fuel/waste management processes in nuclear power plants pose serious environmental risks, particularly in aqueous systems. In such environments, uranium exhibits high solubility and strong mobility, leading to severe radioactive contamination of groundwater, soil, and ecosystems. Therefore, remediating uranium-contaminated environments remains a significant scientific and technological challenge. To address this issue, the present study exploits the high specific surface area and tunable pore architectures/functional sites of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Using a controlled synthesis strategy, a core-shell (Fe-Ni) galvanic cell structure was constructed and integrated with MIL-100(Fe) to fabricate the Ni-Fe-MIL-100(Fe) composite, enabling highly efficient and synergistic removal of U(VI) via an “adsorption-reduction-complexation” mechanism. Experimental results demonstrate that the maximum uranium uptake capacity reached 3038.19 mg·g −1 at 303 K and pH = 5, with a significantly enhanced removal efficiency. The kinetic analysis indicates that the uranium adsorption process is well described by the pseudo-second-order model. Combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the electronic transfer channels of the structure were elucidated, revealing that they drive the reduction of U(VI) and facilitate its coordination and immobilization at multi-metal and oxygen-containing sites. These findings confirm that U(VI) removal by the composite material proceeds via a coupled chemical reduction and complexation process, thereby clarifying the underlying adsorption mechanism. Moreover, in mixed-ion solutions and real seawater, the composite maintains high adsorption capacity and excellent selectivity, demonstrating strong potential for uranium immobilization and recovery in the remediation of radioactive wastewater.

Development of multifunctional packaging films reinforced with MIL-100(Fe) as functional nanofiller in bilayer biopolymer matrix for enhanced beef preservation and quality monitoring

Hafiz Nabeel Ahmad,Yueyuan Yong,Noshaba Munawar,Xinxin Huang,Anzal Akbar,Jie Zhu

MIL-100(Fe) was successfully synthesized at room temperature and incorporated in bilayer film matrix. • MOFs and betalain generate molecular interactions within the film matrix as a filler. • Active films exhibited strong barrier, antioxidant and antibacterial properties. • These films prolonged the shelf life of beef and can be used for beef freshness monitoring. • This study offers novel insights into the development of active, smart food packaging. Meat is prone to microbial spoilage and faces significant risks from foodborne illnesses. This study introduces an innovative approach utilizing metallic organic frameworks (MOFs) as antibacterial agents and beetroot extract (BTE) for pH sensitivity to address existing challenges. Furthermore, this study utilized tri-polymeric concept via protein-polysaccharide combination, which includes sodium alginate to stabilize betalain, and gelatin and chitosan to give strong mechanical properties. The MOFs were synthesized using green synthesis, confirmed through structural and multispectral analysis. Betalain extracted from beetroot was incorporated into these tri-polymeric films. The developed films demonstrated excellent antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Furthermore, the pH sensitivity of betalain renders these films suitable for use as biosensors, with the quality stage of beef successfully assessed. Moreover, the films exhibited strong UV, water, and oxygen barrier properties. Atomic force microscopy revealed differences in surface morphology, with a uniform distribution, and films showed high mechanical strength. Concurrently, the addition of MOFs and BTE extract potentially extended the shelf life of beef by up to three days compared to control tri-polymeric films. These multifunctional films present new strategies employing novel antibacterial materials and tri-polymeric combinations which can efficiently preserve beef quality, while BTE indicates spoilage in real time. In-situ synthesis of MIL-100(Fe)@chitosan composite beads with hierarchical porous structure for efficient adsorption of chlortetracycline hydrochloride: Synthesis, performance and mechanisms

Si Duan,Yuan Gao,Guihong Lan,Haiyan Qiu,Bo Xu,Zhuang Xie,Songsong Xue,Tianxiong Ou

The widespread use of chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC) inevitably poses a potential threat to human health and the biological system, and its environmental pollution and ecotoxicological effects cannot be ignored. Herein, we adopted an in-situ growth method to immobilize the powder form of MIL-100(Fe) adsorbent into low-cost chitosan (CS) matrix for the CTC removal. Metal hydroxide (or metal oxide)/CS beads from the acid-dissolved/alkali-solidified self-sphering shaping method were employed as the substrates for MIL-100(Fe) immobilization, allowing it grow uniformly and stably. Notably, this strategy not only reduced the loss in the separation and regeneration process of powdery MIL-100(Fe), but also improved the adsorption capacity of the CS. Isotherm and kinetic studies showed that the Freundlich and PSO models can describe the experimental data better, respectively, and the maximum adsorption capacity of Langmuir can reach 578.03 mg g −1 . Further, the performance of MIL-100@CS-2 composite beads was thoroughly explored by batch experiments and response surface methodology (RSM) to obtain the optimized operating conditions with the highest CTC removal rate. By combining the density functional theory (DFT) calculation with experimental analysis, the adsorption mechanisms of pore filling, hydrogen bonding , electrostatic interaction , π-π EDA interaction, and hydrophilic interaction were proposed. This work provides a reliable basis for the development of shaping adsorbents and has potential application prospects in the treatment of wastewater containing antibiotics.

Effective and green in-situ remediation strategies based on TEMPO-nanocellulose/lignin/MIL-100(Fe) hydrogel nanocomposite adsorbent for lead and copper in agricultural soils

Hiba Shaghaleh,Yousef Alhaj Hamoud,Qin Sun

Hydrogel adsorbents are promising tools for reducing heavy metals' bioavailability in contaminated soil. However, their practical feasibility remains limited by the low stability, inefficient removal efficiency, and potential secondary pollution. Optimizing the adsorption operation and the functional properties of hydrogel adsorbents could eliminate this method's drawbacks. Herein, three innovative in-situ remediation strategies for Pb/Cu-contaminated soil were adopted based on the concept of novel TEMPO-cellulose (TO-NFCs)/lignin/acrylamide@MIL-100(Fe) nanocomposite hydrogel adsorbent (NCLMH). Characteristic analyses revealed ideal Pb/Cu adsorption mechanisms by swelling, complexation, electrical attraction, and ion exchange via carboxyl/hydroxyl/carbonyl groups and unsaturated Fe(III) sites on ANCMH besides FeOOH formation. The highest maximum theoretical adsorption capacities of Pb(II) and Cu(II) on ANCMH were 416.39 and 133.98 mg/g, under pH 6.5, governed by pseudo-second-order/Freundlich models. Greenhouse pot experiments with contaminated soils amended with two-depth layers of 0.5% NCLMHs (SA@NCLMH) displayed a decline in Pb and Cu bioavailability up to 85.9% and 74.5% within 45 d. Soil column studies simulating continuous water soil flushing coupled with NCLMH layers, instead of conventional extractant fluids, and connected to NCLMH-sand column as purification unit (CF@NCLMH) achieved higher removal rates for Pb, and Cu of 89.5% and 77.2% within 24 h. Alternatively, conducting multiple-pulse soil flushing mode (MF@NCLMH) gained the highest Pb and Cu removal of 96.5% and 85.4%, as the water flushing-stop flux events allowed adequate water movement/residence period, promoting Pb/Cu desorption-adsorption from soil to NCLMH. Also, the NCLMH-sand column conducting and easy separation of the stable/reusable NCLMHs prevented the potential secondary pollution. Interestingly, the three remediated soils reached the corresponding regulation of the permissible limits for Pb and Cu residential scenarios in medium-to-heavily agricultural polluted soils, alleviating the Pb/Cu bioaccumulation and phytotoxicity symptoms in cultivated wheat, especially after MF@NCLMH treatment. This study introduces promising alternative remediation strategies with high sustainability and feasibility in acidic-to-neutral heavy metal-contaminated agricultural soil.

Metal–Organic Framework-Coated Photonic Crystals for High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography

Qianqian Fu,Yumei Ran,Xin Zhang,Jianping Ge

Traditional SiO2 gel-based thin-layer chromatography (TLC) is unable to separate substances with close structures, and its detection requires dyeing when the sample has neither fluorescence nor ultraviolet (UV) absorption signals. Here, high-performance TLC was developed based on metal–organic framework-coated photonic crystal (MOF/PC) films. Using the MIL-100/PC as the TLC plate, the cresol isomers can now be separated in a 2 cm development distance due to the enhanced adsorption–desorption and the good selectivity from the micropores. Meanwhile, the cresol changes the refractive index of MOF/PC, which produces color changes for sample recognition. Compared to the traditional TLC, the MOF/PC TLC shows much higher selectivity toward the analytes, which fully compensates its limited plate numbers and ensures a high-resolution separation. It also provides a convenient solution for chemical analysis as the detection based on structural color change does not require UV irradiation or dyeing treatment.

In Situ Cascade Derivation toward a Hierarchical Layered Double Hydroxide Magnetic Absorbent for High-Performance Protein Separation

Shuo Shi,Wentao Zhang,Haofen Wu,Yuchen Li,Xinyi Ren,Min Li,Jie Liu,Jing Sun,Tianli Yue,Jianlong Wang

Selective enrichment and purification of histidine (His)-rich protein from complex mixtures is vital to satisfy the requirements of proteomic and diagnostic applications, but it still remain a challenge. Herein, a high-performance layered double hydroxide (LDH)-based adsorbent is designed and prepared, via a metal–organic framework (MOF)-mediated in situ cascade derivation strategy, for enhanced His-rich protein separation. Importantly, the pseudomorphic conversion of Fe3O4 nanoparticle-derived magnetic MIL-100(Fe) MOF, with unique structural features, enables the finally derived LDH with plenty of Ni2+ ions exposed for His-rich protein binding. As such, the as-prepared Fe3O4@NiFe LDH exhibits favorable selectivity for His-rich protein adsorption with bovine hemoglobin (BHb) as a model and with a relatively high binding capacity of 3287.67 mg g–1 in a rapid equilibrium time of 20 min, which is superior to those reported magnetic adsorbents. Also, the high performance of Fe3O4@NiFe LDH can be facilely regenerated and applied to separate BHb from a bovine blood sample, highlighting its good practicality. Therefore, this MOF-mediated cascade derivation strategy is a promising way to design advanced layered double hydroxide magnetic adsorbents for high-performance bioseparation.
