Non-organic solvent prepared nanofiltration composite membrane from natural product tannic acid (TA) and cyclohexane-1,4-diamine (CHD)

Meng He,Honghong Sun,Haixiang Sun,Xiujie Yang,Peng Li,Q. Jason Niu

Conventional nanofiltration membrane fabrication generally includes the usage of toxic organic solvent that poses threats to the environment and public health. Herein, we explored preparing nanofiltration membrane through a non-organic solvent method utilizing the highly reactive natural product, tannic acid (TA), along with cyclohexane-1,4-diamine (CHD). Fabrication process was carried out through sequential immersion of a polyethersulfone (PES) support in two aqueous monomer phases. The absence of a solvent interface facilitated the diffusion and mixing of the two monomers, and the highly reactive quinone derivative of TA enabled the rapid film formation via Michael addition and Schiff base formation. Membrane performance was optimized through investigation of fabrication parameters. The TA-CHD membrane exhibited a negatively charged surface, with a molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of 600 Da. The membrane prepared at optimal conditions showed approximate 97% and 50.7% rejections towards Na 2 SO 4 and NaCl, with a water flux at approximate 35 L m −2  h −1 (10 bar). Fouling behaviour of the TA-CHD membrane was studied and a chemical cleaning test under two extreme pH was performed to demonstrate the chemical stability. The proposed non-organic solvent method here provides an eco-friendly way to utilize the potential of polyphenol natural products in water purification membrane preparation.

Coacervate-Derived Hydrogel with Effective Water Repulsion and Robust Underwater Bioadhesion Promotes Wound Healing

Xin Peng,Yuan Li,Tianjie Li,Yucong Li,Yingrui Deng,Xian Xie,Yi Wang,Gang Li,Liming Bian

Achieving robust underwater adhesion by bioadhesives remains a challenge due to interfacial water. Herein a coacervate-to-hydrogel strategy to enhance interfacial water repulsion and bulk adhesion of bioadhesives is reported. The polyethyleneimine/thioctic acid (PEI/TA) coacervate is deposited onto underwater substrates, which can effectively repel interfacial water and completely spread into substrate surface irregularities due to its liquid and water-immiscible nature. The physical interactions between coacervate and substrate can further enhance interfacial adhesion. Furthermore, driven by the spontaneous hydrophobic aggregation of TA molecules and strong electrostatic interaction between PEI and TA, the coacervate can turn into a hydrogel in situ within minutes without additional stimuli to develop enhanced matrix cohesion and robust bulk adhesion on diverse underwater substrates. Molecular dynamics simulations further reveal atomistic details of the formation and wet adhesion of the PEI/TA coacervate via multimode physical interactions. Lastly, it is demonstrated that the PEI/TA coacervate-derived hydrogel can effectively repel blood and therefore efficiently deliver the carried growth factors at wound sites, thereby enhancing wound healing in an animal model. The advantages of the PEI/TA coacervate-derived hydrogel including body fluid-immiscibility, strong underwater adhesion, adaptability to fit irregular target sites, and excellent biocompatibility make it a promising bioadhesive for diverse biomedical applications.

Emerging weak antilocalization effect in Ta0.7Nb0.3Sb2 semimetal single crystals

Xu Meng,Guo Lei,Chen Lei,Zhang Ying,Li Shuang-Shuang,Zhao Weiyao,Wang Xiaolin,Dong Shuai,Zheng Ren-Kui

Weak antilocalization (WAL) effect is commonly observed in low-dimensional systems, three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators and semimetals. Here, we report the growth of high-quality Ta 0.7 Nb 0.3 Sb 2 single crystals via the chemical vapor transport (CVT). Clear sign of the WAL effect is observed below 50 K, probably due to the strong spin—orbital coupling in 3D bulk. In addition, it is worth noting that a relatively large MR of 120% appears under 1 T magnetic field at T = 2 K. Hall measurements and two-band model fitting results reveal high carrier mobility (>1000 cm 2 · V −1 ·s− 1 in 2–300 K region), and off-compensation electron/hole ratio of ∼8:1. Due to the angular dependence of the WAL effect and the fermiology of the Ta 0.7 Nb 0.3 Sb 2 crystals, interesting magnetic-field-induced changes of the symmetry of the anisotropic magnetoresistance (MR) from two-fold (≤ 0.6 T) to four-fold (0.8–1.5 T) and finally to two-fold (≥ 2 T) are observed. This phenomenon is attributed to the mechanism shift from the low-field WAL dominated MR to WAL and fermiology co-dominated MR and finally to high-field fermiology dominated MR. All these signs indicate that Ta 0.7 Nb 0.3 Sb 2 may be a topological semimetal candidate, and these magnetotransport properties may attract more theoretical and experimental exploration of the (Ta,Nb)Sb 2 family.

A key factor in determining the effectiveness of etchants for electrochemical surface enlargement of Ta foil for electrolytic capacitor

Jiping Zhao,Youlong Xu,Yizhuo Li,Jingping Wang,Xiangdong Ding

For electrochemical etching, it is often assumed intuitively that the high specific surface area (SSA) is largely dependent on the aggressiveness of the corrosive agent. Today, however, we present a different perspective. In this study, we combine theoretical calculations and electrochemical experiments to fully understand the mechanisms of Cl - and Br - in the three stages of the tantalum (Ta) pitting process, including passivation film breakdown, Ta anodic dissolution and re-passivation. The results show that both Cl - and Br - cause the breakdown of the passivation film and the dissolution of Ta atoms, with the former having a more pronounced effect. However, MD simulations show that the re-passivation of Ta occurs only in Br - containing media but not in Cl - containing media. This means that Ta is protected by adsorption of dissolved oxygen while being destroyed by Br - , but is only dissolved in NaCl solution. The same result is observed in our electrochemical experiments. In addition, the specific capacity of etched Ta foil in NaBr solution is as high as 325μF/cm 2 while it is only 48μF/cm 2 in NaCl. It is precisely the protective rather than the destructive effect of the etchant that is more important for obtaining high SSA.

Highly Efficient Tannic Acid (TA) -Iron Ion (Fe3+) Modification of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Fibers for High-Performance Polymer Composites

Zeguang Yang,Zhi Gao,Hongwei He,Lan Jia,Fuyong Liu,Wenwen Yu,Yonggang Li

The polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers surfaces were modified by complexing tannic acid (TA)-iron ions (Fe3+) to form a metal skeleton structure on the fibers. In this system a large number of phenolic hydroxyl groups, epoxy groups and other active groups on the fibers surfaces can stabilize the metal skeleton structure and enhance the interfacial peeling performance between the fibers and the composite rubber matrix. The modified PET fibers were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and mechanical properties. The results showed that the peeling strength between the modified fibers and the rubber matrix was increased 45%. This method has the advantages of simple operation, mild conditions and low cost, which provides a new idea for the preparation of rubber/polyester fiber composites with excellent mechanical properties.

Multifunctional TA@MXene conductive organohydrogel integrating real-time sensing, photothermal antibacterial therapy, and electrical stimulation for enhanced wound healing

Zhipeng Lin,Jialing Zhuang,Shunyu Chen,Xiufeng Xiao

The development of hydrogel dressings that integrate mechanical compliance, continuous monitoring capability, and on-demand therapeutic functions remains a critical challenge in advanced wound management. Herein, a multifunctional conductive organohydrogel (POTEL) composed of a dual-network polyacrylamide/oxidized sodium alginate (PAM/OSA) hydrogel integrated with tannic acid-functionalized MXene (TA@MXene) nanosheets and lithium chloride was synthesized in a water/ethylene glycol binary solvent system. The resulting POTEL organohydrogel exhibited superior mechanical properties (fracture strain > 1400 %), high electrical conductivity (2 S/m), significant antifreezing performance (stable to −70 °C), and prolonged moisture retention. It also demonstrated an outstanding photothermal antibacterial efficacy under NIR irradiation, achieving > 99 % inactivation against both S. aureus and E. coli. When employed as a strain sensor, the material showed a high sensitivity (gauge factor = 2.70 at 100 % strain) and robust cycling durability (>100 cycles). In a full-thickness skin defect model, the POTEL organohydrogel significantly accelerated wound closure and tissue regeneration through combined photothermal antibacterial action and electrical stimulation (ES), which collectively attenuated inflammatory responses and enhanced collagen deposition. This work provides a scalable strategy for designing multifunctional hydrogels capable of simultaneous monitoring and wound healing, demonstrating a great potential as next-generation smart wound dressings and skin-conformal electronic sensors.

Gravity-driven self-assembly of thickness-direction asymmetric TA@MXene/WPU composite films for high-performance electromagnetic interference shielding

Yanru Yuan,Yingfan Li,Xu Peng,Dong Zhang,Ziyi Xu,Peiyi Gao,Jinghe Guo,Bohan Ding,Yanxiang Wang

With the rapid development of flexible electronics and wireless communication technologies, lightweight and flexible electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials are in high demand. However, conventional homogeneous MXene/polymer composites often exhibit excessive surface reflection and insufficient internal electromagnetic attenuation. In this work, a tannic acid-modified MXene (TA@MXene)/waterborne polyurethane (WPU) composite film with a thickness-direction asymmetric structure was fabricated through a solution-casting process combining gravity-driven sedimentation and solvent evaporation. TA modification improved the dispersion stability of MXene nanosheets and facilitated the formation of an asymmetric conductive structure within the WPU matrix. The resulting composite film exhibited anisotropic electrical conductivity and effective EMI shielding performance in the X-band. At a TA@MXene loading of 12.5 wt%, the film achieved an EMI shielding effectiveness of 34.3 dB and an SSE/t value of 4975 dB cm 2 g −1 . In addition, the composite film maintained good mechanical flexibility, tensile strength, and improved flame-retardant performance. This work demonstrates an effective strategy for constructing multifunctional MXene-based flexible shielding materials through spatial regulation of conductive networks.

Ultrafast high-temperature sintering of Ta-doped high-entropy fluorite ceramics with dual physical-chemical mitigation against CMAS corrosion

Shibin Wu,Guoqing Chen,Zhou Wu,Fushan Li,Hongxing Zhang,Zheng Lv,Xuesong Fu,Wenlong Zhou,Yufei Zu

Traditional yttria-stabilized zirconia and conventional high-entropy fluorite oxides (HEOs) are crucial materials as thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) in high-temperature engineering applications. However, corrosive deposits of molten calcium-magnesium-alumino-silicate (CMAS) on the surface induce severe thermochemical degradation, thereby severely deteriorating the structural integrity and thermal efficiency of the coating system. To enhance the CMAS corrosion resistance of HEOs, this study introduces a novel doping strategy that utilizes the ultrafast high-temperature sintering (UHS) method to co-incorporate tantalum (Ta 5 + ) and multi-principal rare-earth (RE) ions into the fluorite-structured HEO matrix. The UHS method enables rapid preparation of Ta-doped HEO within 60 s, while maintaining the single-phase fluorite structure. The doping of Ta 5+ ions significantly enhances the reaction with Si and Ca elements in the CMAS melt, thereby promoting the crystallization of CaTa 2 O 6 , Ca 2 Al 2 SiO 7 , and MgAl 2 O 4 phases, while the formed CaTa 2 O 6 particles serve as heterogeneous nucleation substrates for anorthite precipitation. Concurrently, the participation of multiple RE ions in the precipitation of Ca 2 RE 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 and separated RE-MeO 2−δ phase consolidates with the CaTa 2 O 6 phase to form a dense multiphase composite layer at the interface, effectively hindering the diffusion of CMAS melt through both physical blocking and chemical inhibition. Ultimately, this study provides a practical basis for designing the next generation of corrosion-resistant TBC materials capable of withstanding extreme environments. Download: Download high-res image (265KB) Download: Download full-size image In this work, the dense Ta 5+ -doped HEOs were successfully fabricated by the UHS method. After following prolonged corrosion in molten CMAS salts at 1300 °C, the significant phase separation occurred in the undoped HEO ceramic, while a substantial reaction interface layer on the surface of the HEO ceramic. Meanwhile, a compact surface layer comprising apatite and phase-separated fluorite phases formed, effectively blocking further CMAS penetration. It is worth noting that the corroded 0.2Ta-doped HEO after the CMAS corrosion reaction generates enriched Ta 5+ and RE ions in the CMAS melt. This increased the reaction with Si and Ca element at high temperatures, promoting substantial crystallization of the CaTa 2 O 6 , Ca 2 Al 2 SiO 7 , and MgAl 2 O 4 phases. Meanwhile, the interface layer formed a densely structured surface composed primarily of apatite, secondary fluorite phases, and CaTa 2 O 6 particles. When the temperature was elevated to 1500 °C, the atomic mobility within CMAS increased, and the growth rate of the interfacial reaction layer formed by 0.2Ta-doped HEO significantly reduced, demonstrating that the compact reaction layer retains its ability to inhibit CMAS corrosion even at elevated temperatures. Reverse dual ionic liquid polymerization strategy to construct TA/IL sandwich composite nanofiltration membranes with enhanced Mg2+/Li+ separation

Xin Shi,Qiuyan Bi,Zizhen Peng,Zhicheng Wang,Xiaodan Zhang,Yakai Lin,Wenzhong Ma,Shiai Xu

Thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membranes generally face a challenging balance between permeability and selectivity when separating saline water with a high Mg 2+ /Li + ratio, and are also vulnerable to fouling and operational instability during prolonged operation. This study presents a dual ionic liquid (IL) mediated reverse interface polymerization (RIP) strategy. A hydrophilic polar intermediate layer is generated on the PES substrate via the co-deposition of tannic acid (TA) and [HEMIm][BF 4 ]. Subsequently, the organic phase containing TMC is first introduced on the surface of this intermediate layer, and then the PEI aqueous phase doped with hydrophobic IL ([C 6 mim] [Tf 2 N]) is introduced to trigger the RIP reaction. TIL-PIL membranes with rapid hydration behavior, a high positive surface charge (IEP pH = 9.5), excellent antifouling properties, and a uniform pore-size distribution were constructed for Mg 2+ /Li + separation. The separation factor (SF) of the membrane attained 88 at a feed Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio of 300, while maintaining a high salt water permeation flux of 13.58 LMH. Throughout the permeation process, the Mg 2+ /Li + ratio diminished from 300 in the feed to 1.2 during permeation. Moreover, the membrane demonstrated exceptional long-term stability throughout a continuous 100 h filtration experiment, with the Mg 2+ rejection rate consistently surpassing 98.5%. Compared with the RNFm membranes prepared on PES substrates without IL incorporation, the TIL-PIL membranes exhibit significantly improved antifouling performance.

Synthesis of high-purity (Ti,V,Ta,Nb,Hf)(C,N) powder via two-step method and its densification

Bei-Chen Gao,Yu Tian,Run-Ping Liu,Yi-Xin Wang,Yang You,Wei-Ming Guo,Hua-Tay Lin

A two-step method including low-temperature pretreatment and high-temperature homogenization was developed to prepare high-purity (Ti 0.2 V 0.2 Ta 0.2 Nb 0.2 Hf 0.2 )(C 0.75 N 0.25 ) powder. In the first step, the reaction mixture was heated to 1450 ℃ to form intermediate carbonitride phases through carbothermal reduction-nitridation, and the second step at 1700 ℃ produced a single-phase high-entropy carbonitride. The powder prepared by single-step treatment at 1750 ℃ contained 2.28 wt% nitrogen and 0.18 wt% oxygen. In contrast, the two-step powder exhibited higher nitrogen content (2.45 wt%) and lower oxygen content (0.09 wt%), and the formation of a complete single-phase solid solution enabled accurate calculation of its composition (Ti 0.2 V 0.2 Ta 0.2 Nb 0.2 Hf 0.2 )(C 0.78 N 0.21 O 0.01 ). The ceramic prepared from the two-step powder achieved 99.8% relative density, with an average grain size of 4.58 ± 0.32 μm, a Vickers hardness of 22.73 ± 0.51 GPa, and a fracture toughness of 3.16 ± 0.30 MPa·m 1/2 , whereas the single-step ceramic reached only 86.5% relative density.

Fe-TA-mediated self-catalytic fabrication of dual-crosslinked cellulose-based hydrogels and their highly sensitive strain sensing properties

Yingying Yang,Shuang Tian,Zehao Huang,Xuyang Lu,Chunxiao Lan,Yuelu Li,Jiacheng Zhang,Lijie Huang,Chongxing Huang,Hui Zhao,Qingshan Duan

To address the issues of energy-consuming fabrication, poor mechanical properties, and low sensing sensitivity of conventional hydrogel sensors, this study reports the development of an iron-tannic acid (Fe-TA)-mediated autocatalytic strategy for the rapid construction of “covalent-ionic” dual-crosslinked cellulose-based hydrogels. This system spontaneously generates radicals at room temperature through the redox cycle of Fe-TA and ammonium persulfate, driving the polymerization of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) with acrylamide to achieve ultrafast in-situ formation of the hydrogel within 119 s. By introducing carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (CCNFs) and utilizing Fe 3 + ion coordination, a dual-crosslinked network hydrogel (denoted as CAMFFE hydrogel) was constructed, leading to markedly improved mechanical properties with a compressive strength of 386 kPa and an elongation at break of 528%. Benefiting from the multifunctional integration of Fe 3+ (catalysis, crosslinking, and conductivity), this hydrogel strain sensor exhibits high sensitivity with a gauge factor (GF) ranging from 1.46 to 4.16, and rapid response (0.3 s) and recovery (0.5 s) over the strain range of 0–500%, along with strong adhesion to substrates such as wood and skin (up to 85.7 kPa). The study further demonstrates its versatile applications in human motion monitoring and wireless handwritten recognition, providing new materials and valuable design insights for the development of high-performance, sustainable flexible electronic devices.

Multifunctional Dental Resin Composites Enabled by QPEI- and TA-Functionalized ZnO Nanofillers with Antibacterial and Calcium-Phosphate Deposition Properties

Yanzhu Guo,Ze Lalai A Di Li,Qian Chen,Yuxin Wang,Jing Zhang,Wenjuan Liu,Xuebin B Yang,Fuxiang Song,Bin Liu

Dual surface functionalization of ZnO NPs with QPEI and TA fabricates two novel dental resin nanofillers. • 2   wt% functionalized ZnO NPs endow dental resins with balanced physicochemical and biological performances. • QPEI-modified ZnO NPs confer excellent antibacterial ability against Streptococcus mutans to composites. • TA-functionalized ZnO NPs significantly enhances the calcium-phosphate deposition capacity of dental resins. • The multifunctional composites exhibit good cytocompatibility and great potential for secondary caries prevention. To impart antibacterial activity and calcium-phosphate deposition capability to dental resin composites (DRCs) and thereby reduce the risk of secondary caries, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were surface-functionalized with quaternized polyethyleneimine (QPEI) and tannic acid (TA), yielding two functional nanofillers, termed ZQ and ZT, respectively. The modified nanoparticles were incorporated into DRCs, and their physicochemical properties, cytocompatibility, antibacterial performance, and calcium-phosphate deposition behavior were systematically evaluated. The results demonstrated that composites containing 2   wt% functionalized nanoparticles (DZQ2 and DZT2) achieved the most balanced overall performance. Both materials satisfied the ISO 4049 curing-depth requirement and exhibited enhanced mechanical properties, favorable hydrolytic stability, and good cytocompatibility, with cell viabilities exceeding 80%. Functional evaluation revealed distinct biological effects associated with the two surface modification strategies. DZQ2 exhibited strong antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans (88.14   ± 1.70%), whereas DZT2 promoted greater calcium-phosphate deposition, showing a higher Ca/P ratio (1.08) than DZQ2 (0.83) after 28 days of immersion in artificial saliva. Overall, surface functionalization of ZnO nanoparticles provides an effective strategy for tailoring the biological performance of dental resin composites. The developed materials combine favorable physicochemical properties, antibacterial activity, and calcium-phosphate deposition capability, demonstrating potential as multifunctional restorative materials for reducing the risk of secondary caries.
