Sustained release of gaseous chlorine dioxide from alpha-cyclodextrin: An innovative method for strawberry preservation

Linyan Chen,Haohan Jing,Yuhe Dong,Yuantong Cao,Tong Wu,Wanying Zhu,Fanwei Dai,Minhui Chen,Yao Liu,Nan He,Ran Huang,Tian Zhong

The traditional method of generating chlorine dioxide (ClO 2 ) involves reacting sodium chlorite with acid on-site, posing high safety risks of concentrated ClO 2 . This study encapsulates ClO 2 molecules directly in α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) to form inclusion complexes (ClO 2 @α-CD). This approach enables stable storage and safe handling of gaseous ClO 2 , while its sustained-release property also provides long-term microbial inhibition. Fumigation with 0.25 g of ClO 2 @α-CD completely inhibited Aspergillus niger growth on potato dextrose agar (PDA). A 0.5 g dose reduced the 6-day decay incidence of A. niger -inoculated strawberries from 91.67 % (control) to 5.00 % and the severity from 58.75 % (control) to 1.25 %. In commercial storage simulations, 5 g of ClO 2 @α-CD reduced the natural incidence from 53.33 % (control) to 26.67 %, while preserving the weight, color, firmness, and total soluble solids (TSS)/titratable acidity (TA) ratio of strawberries. These findings suggest that ClO 2 @α-CD is a viable approach for controlling postharvest diseases and prolonging fruit shelf-life.

Phytosterol nanoparticle delivery system based on whey protein-chitosan: enhanced stability, bioavailability, and sustained-release properties

Yang Tingting,Tao Guanhua,Xu Xinye,Yu Chunyu,Shi Jindou,Ma Qingwen

Phytosterol (PS) face challenges of poor stability and rapid release in the gastrointestinal tract. To overcome these limitations, this study developed whey protein-chitosan composite (WP-CS-PS) nanoparticles via reverse solvent precipitation, significantly enhancing PS transport efficiency and functional performance. Through systematic optimization using single-factor and orthogonal tests, the nanoparticles were fabricated under ideal parameters. The optimal conditions included a 1:1 WP/CS mass ratio, 0.8% (w/v) PS concentration, 60 °C hydration, and 15 min stirring, which yielded high encapsulation efficiency (77.43%), uniform particle size (203.41 nm, PDI 0.265), and excellent colloidal stability (zeta potential − 35.42 mV). Structural analyses (SEM, FT-IR) revealed a dense gel-network morphology with PS successfully embedded via hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. The WP-CS matrix markedly improved PS stability against thermal, UV, and storage stresses, while in vitro digestion assays demonstrated sustained intestinal release (17.72% slower than free PS). These results not only validate WP-CS-PS as a robust carrier for lipophilic bioactives but also offer a scalable strategy to enhance the bioavailability of PS in functional foods, potentially addressing global health needs such as cholesterol management and dietary supplementation. By bridging material science and nutritional delivery, this work paves the way for sustainable nutraceutical innovations with broad industrial applicability. Graphical

Cabazitaxel Sustained-Release Nanoparticles Treat Spinal Cord Injury through Inhibiting Fibrin Deposition and Improving the Microenvironment

Yuanli Yang,Chenqian Feng,Xiaoling Li,Min Mu,Hui Li,Bo Chen,Rangrang Fan,Haifeng Chen,Gang Guo

Biomaterial-based modulation of the microenvironment represents a promising neuroprotective strategy for spinal cord injury (SCI). We first fabricated hyaluronic acid (HA)-graft-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) nanoparticles (HEN). These nanoparticles can synergistically exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, while HA can modulate the immune microenvironment. To further enhance therapeutic efficacy, Cabazitaxel (Cab) was incorporated into HEN to generate multifunctional Cabazitaxel-loaded HA-EGCG nanoparticles (Cab-HEN), which inhibited scar formation and modulated microtubule homeostasis, thereby promoting the beneficial regeneration of nerve axons in a rat SCI model. Through in situ injection at the T9 injury site, Cab-HEN significantly downregulated the expression of inflammatory factors, effectively mitigated oxidative damage induced by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS), and reduced fibrin deposition and scar formation. Furthermore, Cab-HEN regulated microtubules and enhanced the regeneration of nerve fibers. Evaluations based on electrophysiological assessments, Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan (BBB) scores, and bladder function recovery revealed the nanoparticles’ remarkable therapeutic efficacy in SCI. Therefore, biomaterials can facilitate axonal regeneration, tissue remodeling, and functional restoration following injury.

Sustained Release of Bone Morphogenetic Protein 2/Chitosan-Collagen Scaffold Repairs Rabbit Knee Joint Cartilage Defects

Hao Song,Dongxu Tang,Buyu Wang,Yanfei Luo,Changzheng Yan,Shiqiang Ruan

To explore the effects of a collagen-binding domains-bone morphogenetic protein 2 (CBD-BMP-2) scaffold on repairing cartilage defects. A chitosan-collagen scaffold was prepared and its physicochemical properties were evaluated. A plasmid encoding the CBD and BMP-2 was constructed, a CBD-BMP-2 composite scaffold was prepared, and the controlled release of BMP-2 was assessed in vitro. Knee cartilage defect model rabbits were divided into the control, CBD, and CBD-BMP-2 groups ( n = 9). Gross observation, MRI, staining, and IHC were performed to evaluate the cartilage repair outcomes. CBD-BMP-2 composite scaffold provided sufficient support and promoting cell attachment and proliferation. It consistently released BMP-2 for over 30 days in vitro. It significantly enhanced cartilage regeneration and repair. After surgery, cartilage growth in the CBD-BMP-2 group was superior to the control and CBD groups. The CBD-BMP-2 group demonstrated better coverage of new cartilage tissue. In the CBD-BMP-2 group, new cartilage tissue was tightly structured and cells were neatly arranged, and there were a rich cartilage matrix and dense collagen fibers. Type II collagen expression was significantly increased in the CBD-BMP-2 group. CBD-BMP-2 composite scaffold has excellent physicochemical properties and controlled-release functionality, providing superior repair effects for rabbit knee joint cartilage defects. Summary Cartilage injuries are difficult to treat due to limited self - healing capacity. Current treatments offer only temporary relief. The CBD - BMP - 2 slow - release composite scaffold combines the ability of BMP - 2 to promote cartilage regeneration with the collagen - binding property of CBD. Our study shows it has excellent mechanical properties and controlled - release functionality, providing superior repair for rabbit knee cartilage defects, offering a novel solution for cartilage injury repair.

Synthesis and urea sustained-release behavior of an eco-friendly superabsorbent based on flax yarn wastes

Yong Zhang,Fang Wu,Lin Liu,Juming Yao

In order to develop an eco-friendly superabsorbent composite, flax yarn waste (FYW) was used as raw material to synthesize a novel flax yarn waste-g-poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) (FYW/PAA) superabsorbent composite. Acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM) were grafted onto the pretreated flax yarn waste (PFYW) by free-radical graft copolymerization in homogeneous aqueous solution. The properties and synthesis conditions of the FYW/PAA superabsorbent composite were investigated. As a result, the prepared FYW/PAA attained the best water absorbency of 875   g/g in distilled water, 490   g/g in rainwater and 90   g/g in 0.9   wt% NaCl solution. The urea loading percentage of FYW/PAA could be modulated by the concentration of urea. The release of urea from FYW/PAA in water showed a typical three-stages sustained release behavior. Meanwhile, a weight residue of 53.6   wt% was attained after being buried in soil for 90   d.

Modulating meloxicam existing forms in PLGA microspheres to achieve drug sustained release and efficient osteoarthritis treatment

Haonan Wu,Fan Wang,Yameng Qu,Fujia Yang,Liandong Hu

Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres are widely used for controlled drug delivery, but the drug existing state in the microspheres significantly influences the characteristics of microspheres. The focus of the present study was to formulate meloxicam injectable sustained release microspheres (MLX-MS) and to investigate the influence of the drug existing state within the microspheres on the release properties, degradation and to evaluate the intra-articular (IA) treatment efficacy of osteoarthritis (OA). Different MLX-MS were prepared by changing drug existing forms (microcrystal, particle and molecular state) by the method of cosolvent combination or micronized drug and they were characterized by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and in vitro release. The therapeutic effect of MLX-MS was investigated using OA rabbits after IA injection. The degradation, drug retention, and pharmacodynamics were also assessed. The results highlighted that the release and degradation of MLX-MS in the joint cavity were directly correlated to the drug existing state. This study offers crucial insights for developing sustained-release injectable MLX-MS, the microspheres with drug existing in molecular state (Mol-MS) were the optimum formulation which can provide sustained release and more effective therapy of joint inflammation.

Development and evaluation of novel zein-based artemisinin sustained-release formulation for treating drug-resistant malaria

Yijie Wang,Xinyu Yu,Xinyu Zhang,Xiaohui He,Yongxin Tang,Ling Fang,Richard Culleton,Qingfeng Zhang,Weifu Dong,Jun Cao

Artemisinin antimalarial drugs initially exhibited remarkable efficacy against Plasmodium falciparum. However, their poor solubility and low bioavailability necessitate high doses and lead to an extremely short in vivo half-life. These limitations not only drive the emergence of drug-resistant Plasmodium strains but also compromise long-term therapeutic outcomes. Herein, we report a zein-based sustained release formulation, wherein zein, a natural maize protein, serves as a biocompatible nanocarrier to effectively encapsulate artemisinin (ART). Notably, this nanocarrier formulation achieves a 200-fold enhancement in ART’s water solubility, addressing a key bottleneck of ART-based therapies. In vitro assays confirm that the zein-based formulation allows for the sustained release of ART, which could help maintain therapeutic concentrations over extended periods and displayed different release rates and good dispersibility in both acid and basic environments. Importantly, in vitro evaluations also demonstrate that the nanoformulation exerts potent inhibitory effects against ART-resistant P. falciparum strains in both ring survival assay and recrudescence assay, attributed to the sustained maintenance of effective ART concentrations. In vivo studies, utilizing both rodent malaria models and humanized erythrocyte mouse models, further validate the nanoformulation’s therapeutic potential. The zein nanocarrier significantly prolongs ART’s in vivo half-life via its sustained-release capability, thereby maintaining effective blood concentrations over an extended duration. Compared to free ART, the nanoformulation exhibits superior efficacy in reducing parasitemia, preventing malaria recrudescence, and, most notably, overcoming ART resistance in drug-resistant Plasmodium infections. Collectively, these findings establish the zein-based nanocarrier as a promising strategy to optimize ART-based therapies by addressing solubility and pharmacokinetic limitations while effectively combating drug-resistant malaria.

Furui He,Qingfeng Zhou,Longzheng Wang,Gaobo Yu,Jiacheng Li,Yuhong Feng

In pest control field, the sustained release of pesticides plays significant roles in effectiveness and environment friendly. In this study, the sodium alginate (SA), polyacrylamide (PAM) and montmorillonite (MMT) were utilized to fabricate the stretchable double-network nanocomposite hydrogel, which apply in a sustained release system of acetamiprid . These nanocomposite hydrogels were fully characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that adding MMT could significantly improve the sustained release performances of the hydrogels. The swelling behavior of all the hydrogels well fits into the Fickian diffusion model. The hydrogel with 5.0% MMT content shows the maximum pesticides loading rate of 13.32% and minimum pesticides release rate of 76.11%. The nanocomposite hydrogels take advantages of both the gelation property of alginate and the adsorption capacity of clays, has great potential in the application of pesticides carrier to improve the utilization efficiency of water-insoluble pesticides.

Temperature responsive sustained-release microsphere for harmful algal bloom control: preparation, algicidal activity and eco-safety

Shumiao Yu,Tao Tang,Jinxian Li,Caicai Xu,Yangfan Yu,Xi Xiao

Temperature is one of the most important factors driving cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CHABs). However, existing algicide designs rarely consider the influence of temperature on algal growth. Novel temperature-responsive sustained-release microspheres (T-SRMs) of anti-algal 5,4′-dihydroxyflavone (DHF) were designed using n -heptadecane as the temperature-responsive material, which can adjust DHF release behavior in response to temperature. Compared to DHF direct application, T-SRMs showed higher inhibition rates against Microcystis aeruginosa and sustained inhibitory activity at various temperatures (15-25 °C). The theoretical inhibition time of T-SRMs substantially exceeds that of conventional SRMs, with the potential to cover the entire CHABs outbreak period and extend the duration of validity. T-SRMs can accurately regulate DHF release rate based on water temperature. When the temperature is higher than the melting point of n -heptadecane (22 °C), the phase transition of heptadecane significantly promotes the DHF release rate. Moreover, salinity had no significant effect on the DHF release behavior, and the temperature-responsive materials can be adjusted to linearly regulate the release of DHF, which is favorable for the wide application of T-SRMs in freshwater, brackish and salt waters with flexible temperature windows. In addition, the T-SRMs had no apparent toxic effects on Chlorella vulgaris, Daphnia magna and Danio rerio . Our study has an important scientific significance to achieve a more intelligent, accurate and efficient control of CHABs.

Sustained-release salt reservoir enables durable solid electrolyte interphases for practical micron-sized silicon composite anodes

Kui Lin,Junke Wu,Zhengguang Song,Yuling Yi,Fuxi Peng,Shiwen Wang,Zhimin Zou,Tongbin Lan,Junxiong Wu,Chunhai Jiang

An anode-preloaded NaBF 4 reservoir enables long-lasting SEI regulation. • Solubility contrast allows NaBF 4 incorporation via aqueous slurry processing. • BF 4 − -derived species promote a B/F-rich, low-impedance SEI. • Ah-level Si-graphite pouch cells retain 89.2% capacity after 160 cycles. • The SRE strategy is extendable to graphite and SiO x /C anodes. Persistent active lithium (Li) loss caused by repeated rupture and reconstruction of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) remains a major barrier to long-life Li-ion batteries, especially for silicon (Si)-containing anodes with pronounced interfacial instability. Here, we report a sustained-release-enhanced (SRE) interphase strategy that enables long-lasting SEI regulation through an anode-preloaded NaBF 4 reservoir. By exploiting the high solubility of NaBF 4 in the aqueous slurry and its limited solubility in the carbonate electrolyte, NaBF 4 can be uniformly implanted during electrode fabrication and maintain the prolonged availability of BF 4 − -derived species near the anode/electrolyte interface during cycling. This solubility-governed process enhances anion participation in interfacial solvation and promotes the formation of a B/F-rich SEI with improved mechanical robustness and Li + transport kinetics. Importantly, the strategy is successfully demonstrated in a practically relevant micron-sized Si-graphite composite anode, where long-term interfacial stabilization is particularly challenging, delivering reduced polarization, improved rate capability, and markedly enhanced cycling stability. The strategy is further applicable to graphite and SiO x /C anodes. In practical full cells paired with a LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 cathode, the SRE anode increases the initial Coulombic efficiency from 73.86% to 81.58%, and an Ah-level pouch cell retains 89.2% of its capacity after 160 cycles. This work provides a scalable route to regulate long-term SEI evolution in practical micron-sized Si-containing anodes and extend the lifetime of high-energy Li-ion batteries. A low-cost NaBF 4 salt is preloaded into the anode coating via aqueous slurry processing to construct a local reservoir. The prolonged availability of BF 4 − -derived species promotes a B/F-rich, low-impedance SEI, reducing lithium loss and interfacial resistance. As a result, silicon-graphite cells and Ah-level pouch cells achieve improved cycling stability, retaining 89.2% capacity after 160 cycles. Preparation and performance of pH-responsive 5-Fu/chitosan sustained-release microspheres based on microfluidic technology

Huidong Fang,Shiai Xu,Siyu Han,Bin Zhao,Chao Zhang,Wanji Zhou

T-shaped droplet microfluidic device was used for preparing 5-Fu-loaded chitosan microspheres. • 5-Fu-loaded chitosan microspheres exhibit pH-responsive release patterns and sustainable release characteristics for up to 60 days. • The average particle size of the microspheres is 3.90 ± 0.57 μm, and the particle size distribution is narrow. • Drug-loaded microspheres of different particle sizes have different drug release rates and cycles. Microsphere formulations are a promising drug delivery system for targeted response and prolonged sustained release. However, conventional emulsification crosslinking methods for microsphere preparation usually result in a broad particle size distribution, large particle size, poor uniformity, and consequently erratic drug release kinetics. In this investigation, chitosan microspheres encapsulating 5-Fluorouracil (5-Fu CS-MS) were fabricated using a T-type droplet microfluidic device, and the formulation was optimized by single-factor experiments. The resulting microspheres had a consistent drug release profile, a smooth surface, high monodispersity, and a uniform particle size distribution with an average particle size of 3.90 ± 0.57 μm. The polymer-drug interaction in 5-Fu CS-MS was analyzed using FTIR and XRD. The XPS and EDS results confirmed the occurrence of a Schiff base reaction between glutaraldehyde (GA) and chitosan (CS), indicating successful encapsulation. TGA results revealed that the cross-linking reaction enhanced the thermal stability of the microspheres. Biocompatibility assessments using Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) line demonstrated the safety and compatibility of the fabricated microspheres. More importantly, the in vitro release results illustrated a pH-responsive drug release profile and sustained release of 5-Fu CS-MS for a period up to 60 days. In summary, the CS sustained-release microspheres produced using the microfluidic technique have the potential for intelligent response, precise drug delivery, and prolonged sustained release of small-molecule drugs.
